July 2012
Welcome!! Welcome!!
Currently on the entire Warped Tour through August, The Chicharones are nobody’s deep fried pork
rinds. Instead they’ve been some of the hardest working hip hop artists on the continent for the past
decade. You don’t get Spin calling you “The Best Bar Band in America” if you can’t deliver. The new lp
is Swine Flew.
Anyone who hangs with Albert Lee, Van Dyke Parks and Larry Carlton has to be Cool, Man, Cool.
Grant Geissman is - and he plays that guitar just like a ringin’a bell on Bop! Bang! Boom! It’s also got
playing cards, a superb Vinyl component and is #14 in Grant’s long career. Dig It!!!
Black Francis Live in Nijmegen recorded live in 2008. Whether as the leader of The Pixies or as Frank
Black and The Catholics, or under his Black Francis moniker, the man puts out good albums that both
challenge and delight. Bonus points for the Herman Brood rock opera.
Cee Cee James has a 20 year career as a powerful blues singer and is about to embark in the acting
world with her debut in We Be Kings with Magic Slim about to start production. Simple enough - the
woman can sing, scream, holler, shout and caress the blues: check out her latest, Blood Red Blues.
“If you ever plan to motor west” Remember the Emergency TV program in the 70s? starring chanteuse
Julie London and her second husband Bobby Troup (and produced by first husband Jack Webb of
Dragnet fame). Bobby Troup wrote Route 66, a song covered by hundreds including Nat King Cole and
the Rolling Stones, or what about the Route 66 TV show from the early 60s with Martin Milner and
George Maharis: the highway which winds from Chicago to LA is a part of the American consciousness
and David Sanger of Asleep At The Wheel knows that road well. Finally, the Lazy S.O.B. Recordings 3rd
volume in the Route 66 series is available - it took 17 years but is worth it with tracks from Dale Watson,
Band of Heathens, Seth Walker, Carolyn Wonderland and more Austin and Americana artists - get your
kicks!

contemporary roots/blues in 12 original songs that fans will eat alive. Blood Red Blues, produced by legendary

Monday Michiru, Soulception
Monday Michiru needs no introduction in her native Japan where she starred in the film, Hikaru Onna. She has
been a leading force in underground dance music and remains the undisputed queen of the acid jazz movement. As a solo artist, she’s released over 12 albums, several compilations, remix projects and numerous singles.
Monday has decided to blend her talents with some of the Adventure Music label’s Brazilian roots. Recorded and
mixed on six winter days in New York, Monday takes us on a brilliant journey across her personal musical
spectrum. Soulception came from the simplicity of the production married with the concept of all five senses and
that sixth sense of something wonderful: Monday working with the cream of New York-based jazz musicians.

Black Francis, Live In Nijmegen
Live in Nijmegen, the new album from the legendary Black Francis (of the Pixies) features many of the songs
from 2007’s Bluefinger and 2008’s Svn Fngrs. This raucous, high energy record packs a serious punch and
plenty of Black’s wry wit. Some of his greatest post-Frank Black tunes performed here. With 24 tracks, Live in
Nijmegen is an essential piece in any Frank Black / Black Francis collection.

The Green Pajamas, Death By Misadventure
Seattle’s Green Pajamas strike yet again with Death By Misadventure, built around the epic song cycle, The
Fall of the Queen Bee. This peculiar assortment of songs which takes place in her kingdom, Colony, includes the
ultimate death of The Queen and her court by decadent misadventure. This is, of course, a fictional work, and
any resemblance to real people living, dead or otherwise, is completely true. A worldly darkness prevails throughout this record, though occasional shards of light break through. Death By Misadventure marks the thirtieth
album/EP by The Green Pajamas. Toss in The Goblin Market and some Jeff Kelly solo albums - that’s a splendid
body of work by Seattle’s longest running, most prolific band. Death By Misadventure is a fine new chapter in
the grand drama.

Dave Harding, You Came Through
While in the midst of a tour with his band, Richmond Fontaine, Dave Harding got the inspiration to record his
second album. So he contacted many of the same people who he had worked with on his first record, Across The
Road: producer Mike Coykendall, members of Richmond Fontaine, guitarist Scott Hampton and vocalist Michael
Jodell. What they created were 10 songs that mix folk, bluegrass and heartland rock with upbeat optimism and
Harding’s dry observations of life passing by his window at 70 mph. Highlights include the hook-laden Shelly’s
Song, the gospel-tinged Shores of Cornwall, as well as two duets with Jodell. You Came Through finds Harding
hitting his stride as a gifted songwriter.

Sara Jackson-Holman, Cardiology
Portland, Oregon-based pianist/singer-songwriter Sara Jackson-Holman releases her much anticipated sophomore full-length, Cardiology, which finds her delivering a stunning follow-up to her critically acclaimed debut,
When You Dream. Cardiology expresses a very personal journey, specific to the study of Jackson-Holman’s own
heart over the course of this last year. “This album centers around themes of love and loss and my experiences
with each over the course of this last year”. Cardiology is a significant expansion in musical style, production
and songwriting. More upbeat, with significant electronic elements, this album will appeal across genres and
across generations.

The Lovesores, Fast Friends b/w Red Alert
Yet another reason why Portland, OR is currently THE place to be for new music - The Lovesores have constructed
a rock and roll machine that is the equal to any on the planet. Boasting the combined talents of Jeff Fieldhouse
and Scott "Deluxe" Drake (the original songwriting and guitar/vocal team of the 90’s SoCal garage/punk
juggernaut, The Humpers), Boz Bennes and Adam "98%" Kattau (members of Portland’s own legendary Fast
Takers) and Alex Fast (bassist for Portland’s heavy rock champions, LSD&D), The Lovesores are, after only a few
months, already generating excitement and building an enthusiastic fanbase in the Pacific Northwest. On this,
their debut release, The Lovesores find the sweet (and sweaty) spot where Rock, Garage and Punk collide in an
orgy of guitar-driven ENERGY. With upcoming high-profile shows all over the USA, The Lovesores are poised to
make a very LOUD impact in the music world.

The Mommyheads, Vulnerable Boy
The Mommyheads have been called a “true indie rock national treasure.” Pulling together a startlingly diverse
group of influences, Vulnerable Boy is the band’s most ambitious recording since their 1989 debut. Alternately
an exploration of modern prog-rock, a delicate collection of classical-influenced piano ballads and a string of
anthemic power pop masterpieces, Vulnerable Boy sees the band members spreading their creative wings and
challenging each other as musicians. The result yields a beautiful, powerful progressive pop album. Now into
their third decade, their 8th studio album is as comfortable in a collection alongside the likes of Radiohead
and Deerhoof as it is alongside early Genesis and King Crimson.

Tomten, Ta Ta Dana
Tomten’s spring and summer 2012 releases, the Ta Ta Dana EP and the following full length album Wednesday’s
Children feature songs that have been thrilling Pacific NW audiences at clubs since they formed in 2010. These
are deliciously crafted parlor romps featuring a keen sense of assured swing with shambolic passion (think
the sweetest nuggets you’d hear on a Wes Anderson soundtrack). Fans of dream pop factories Papercuts, dark
maestros like John Cale, or chanteuse-chasers such as Serge Gainsbourg will happily sip this extraordinary
bliss of a sonic Cosmopolitan.

Various Artists, SpokAnarchy! Original Soundtrack
SpokAnarchy! OST is the accompanying soundtrack to the feature-length documentary about the rise of the
punk rock scene in the conservative, culturally barren 1980s of Spokane, WA. Out of this unlikely burg a
decade’s worth of undiscovered music and art erupted, by the likes of whom that went on to be in noteworthy and
underground bands such as TOOL, Motorcycle Boy, Sandy Duncan’s Eye, Stompbox, Cattle Prod, even Charlie
Schmidt, Keyboard Cat’s creator! 16 tracks of post-punk, new wave, hardcore, and assorted weirdness from 13
bands you’ve never heard of, let alone heard! “A kaleidoscopic look at an under-recognized underground
scene that deserves to be seen, moshed and celebrated.” – Lenny Kaye, Patti Smith Group

SPOKEN WORD
David Greenberger
Artist David Greenberger, best known for 32 years of his periodical, The Duplex Planet, has created four new CDs of monologues with music.
These are four purposefully varied musical approaches: from the stately chamber arrangements of Never Give Up Study to the cinematic sweep
of Tell Me That Before; from the sly rhythmic interplay of How I Became Uncertain to the funhouse romp with Carney on OH, PA. Greenberger’s
monologues are full of warmth and respect for old people. His text is developed from the conversations he has with people who still find pleasure in the company of others, and who open, sometimes in very small ways, to someone taking an interest in them. This is Greenberger’s art. He
abstracts these dialogues, eschewing oral history, celebrating small moments by shaping them into works that resonate with shared humanity.
Over the years he has worked with a range of musical collaborators, including Terry Adams (of NRBQ), David Hidalgo & Louis Perez (of Los
Lobos), 3 Leg Torso, and Birdsongs of the Mesozoic.
“David Greenberger meanders around America, lovingly collecting the life stories of old people like fireflies in a jar…I recommend this to
anybody who cares about people.” – Robyn Hitchcock
“[Greenberger] is never condescending, never mean, never ironic, and sometimes really funny. His records and his magazine, Duplex Planet, will
enlighten you, fill your heart, and also break your heart.” – Penn Jillette

Vayo, Tangos and Milongas of the World (Tangos y Milongas del Mundo)
Grammy and Latin Grammy nominee, Vayo Raimondo’s elegant vocal interpretations of his own compositions and
of the traditional repertoire express the poetry and drama of the Tango Genre. Vayo’s new Tango style results from
expanding the music beyond the limitations of regular tempo and traditional structures. These polished and
fresh performances take the listener to new places in the adventure of music. Vayo presents a wide thematic
range of Tangos and Milongas. As a contemporary pioneer in this field, he creates his own themes and interprets
them in his own innovative style, accompanied by expert musicians of Montevideo. Aside from his performance
of classic themes of the past, Vayo also transforms well known music of other genres into Tangos and Milongas.

POLIÇA, Give You the Ghost
Label: Totally Gross National Product
UPC: 789577678828
Cat: TNGP023
Price: $7.65
POLIÇA began as a collaboration between fellow GAYNGS’ members Channy Leaneagh and Ryan Olson in June of 2011. By July, the pair
had completed 11 songs, made the key additions of two drummers and a bass player, and headed into the studio to put the finishing
touches on what would become POLIÇA’s debut album, Give You The Ghost. After Mike Noyce (Bon Iver) lent his voice to a couple of
tracks, Lay Your Cards Out and Wandering Star, the record was brought to Austin, TX, where it was mixed with Jim Eno (Spoon).
Ottmar Liebert + Luna Negra, Dune
Label: Spiral Subwave Records International
UPC: 678277203020
Cat: 902017
Price: $9.90
Dune contains the haunting southwest border-country flamenco music Ottmar and his band Luna Negra are famous for. Acoustic
guitar mixes with electric, gypsy accordion, electric bass, funky drum-boxing and percussion. “I wanted to play guitar melodies that
sounded sung”, says Ottmar. “For some reason I kept thinking about old jazz and pop crooners. So I sang almost every melody first and
then figured out how to play it on guitar. Perhaps it’s guitar anti-shredding!”
NRBQ, We Travel the Spaceways
Label: Clang! Records
UPC: 614511798020
Cat: CL-512
Price: $10.40
This is a powerful and propulsive new live recording. The dozen songs, recorded last spring, showcase everything we love about NRBQ
– energy, musicianship, playfulness, swing, and their brilliant mix of rock, jazz, pop, and who-knows-what. There are originals spanning NRBQ’s 40-plus-year career, Q-takes on Thelonious Monk and Piano Red and, as always, unexpected arrangements of tunes we
think we may have heard before but aren’t sure where. Present is former NRBQ drummer Tom Ardolino, who passed away early this year.
