He spent the early months of 2010 crafting a batch of personal songs-ranging across a broad emotional spectrum-then journeyed to Portland, Oregon, to work with producer/engineer Mark Orton (Tin Hat Trio). Levy’s CD, The Heart Collector, is proof that his instincts were right all along. “It is a great album overflowing with warm and soulful songs that enchant the ears and captivate the heart.” -No Depression Home Base: NY Top Markets: National Cat: LWR1101 Label: Lost Wax Records UPC: 616892142669 Price: $7.15 xgBGIJCy1426 tz 6 1689-21426-6 9 Emily O’Halloran, Morphine and Cupcakes Emily O’Halloran is not a trend-driven artist. Fresh and seemingly in her own world, she writes smoky Americana, her husky voice enveloping each track like cut velvet. Delivering her poetically understated songs in a penetrating baritone, Emily creates a cinematic Americana ghost town of landscape shot through with a raw, mystical energy -- bordering at times on the shamanic. Her voice speaks volumes, like her lyrics, deep, intimate, and intensely compelling; Think Nico and Tom Waits. For Morphine and Cupcakes, her debut outing, Emily joined forces with producer Mark Howard (whose many legendary collaborators include Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams and Tom Waits). Her debut album is a doped-up serenade for the Bonnies, the Clydes, the lovers and the thieves. It is desert music, well past midnight in an old pick-up truck where you don’t know where the ground ends and the stars appear. Songwriter and novelist Willy Vlautin has written an extraordinarily eccentric album like no other. More than a concept record, The High Country is a song- novel: a fully realized, novel-sized story set to music. Set in a rural logging community in Oregon, The High Country is a gothic love story between a mechanic and an auto parts store counter girl, whose secret love inspires an effort to escape the darkness of the world that surrounds them -- drugs, violence, madness, loneliness, and desperation set against a backdrop of endless logging roads and the remains of a forest brutalized by logging. In this story of light vs. dark, Vlautin has woven a tale where fuck-ups and freaks demonize the lives of innocents. The single “Prescription Drugs (We’re Having a Party!) / Tikka Masala” perfectly displays The Gents’ talent for writing “smart, funny, sharp-rhyming songs that put them in the company of classics like Louis Jordon and Louis Prima” (Boston Phoenix). “Prescription Drugs (We’re Having a Party!)” is an absurdly cheerful, retro romp about a decidedly modern topic. The swinging flip side, “Tikka Masala”, celebrates a favorite cuisine in the spirit of one of the band’s chief influences, Slim & Slam. Recorded live to tape using a single 1940s RCA microphone, this is the debut vinyl offering from The Two Man Gentlemen Band. The daughter of legendary composer/Beat icon David Amram became a traveling musician and storyteller at an early age. Drawn to the songs of the late 50s and early 60s folk scene, it was only fitting that Alana would discover the songs of an influential but unknown songwriter, Vince Martin, whose recordings, solo and with Fred Neil, are prized by folk cognoscenti. The result is Snow Shadows, a career-spanning collection of songs by Martin, produced by Mark Sebastian (brother of The Lovin‚ Spoonful’s John Sebastian) and Jesse Lauter, who’s worked with The Low Anthem, the album has a full, warm sound and a ton of heart. John Sebastian and Van Dyke Parks, who’d both played on Vince’s 1973 Capitol album, Vince Martin, were reunited with Vince after more than 35 years. But also the games and the nursery songs which become part of our existence and in this album, a source of musical inspiration. Dessa, Castor, The Twin Dessa’s first full-length record, A Badly Broken Code, introduced her to a national audience as a rapper, a singer, and a potent, imaginative lyricist. It earned a binder of superlative reviews from sources like NPR, The Seattle Times, and AM New York. To tour the album, she assembled a small cast of talented instrumentalists: vibraphone, piano, viola, and stand-up bass for a classical, sometimes orchestral sound, a beautiful, somber effect re-interpreting the disc for a dynamic live concert. Part rap show and part cabaret, the elegant presentation charmed both audiences and critics - not a negligible feat in hip hop, a genre with its share of purists. Castor, The Twin captures these new arrangements for ten of Dessa’s strongest previously released songs. Seattle’s Green Pajamas have taken a left turn from their psych-pop-guitar-rock and headed for the Country. Jeff Kelly has always had a dalliance with country in his heart and in his music. Some of the songs on this CD date back as far as 1986 to his earliest home-recorded releases, though these are brand new recordings. While most songs are new, they reflect an old-school country sensibility; they would be more at home with Hank and Johnny Cash than the country charts of today. Jeff and bass player Joe Ross have toyed with the idea of this album for ten years. It needed to age. It was worth the wait. This is not a gimmick. It is not a marketing ploy. It is just plain good music played from the heart. From its sly opening tribute to the classic westerns to the mournful close, Green Pajama Country is a Classic. When Sherrer heard the sparse, raw-sincerity captured on Allard’s demos, he became inspired. Youth itself is a poignant exploration of life’s varying stages of uncertainty and self-deception. Likewise, musically it explores shades of song structure with equal measures of childlike wonder and nuanced pop expertise. Youth is not a “mature” album in the cliched sense. Rather, and more importantly, it embodies exactly everything that the best music can be: a comforting companion to our multitude of hopes and fears throughout all stages of life. Krueger never professes to provide answers, but he’s asking the right questions. Like the city’s favorite son, Muhammad Ali, the band knows its punches from its poetry, and both are on ample display here. Playing on the loud-soft dynamics of its forebears but never slipping into the trappings of genre, the band lays a thick and heavy groundwork throughout. From the assaulting screams of “Bless You All,” to the slinky bass and guitar lines that introduce “Picture Perfect,” to the silky vocal intro of “616,” Old Scratch introduces a band that you’d regret to overlook. Take the punch and you’ll hear the poetry.
