Welcome!! Welcome!!
Dessa!! On Castor, The Twin, she reimagines ten of her Doomtree hip hop successes with viola,
stand up bass, grand piano, mandolin and tympani showcasing both her voice and lyrics. A bold
step foretelling the future with stunning results.
The High Country. Straight outta Portland comes the latest by Richmond Fontaine. Frontman Willy
Vlautin melds his other career as award winning novelist with the musicianship of the rest of the
acclaimed group to create a tragic tale of the NorthWest.
At this very moment, The Jim Jones Revue is tearing it up across the land to support the newest,
Burning Your House Down. We have both the new release and their first eponymous title on both CD
and LP. This London aggregation takes no prisoners as it storms across the country.

Leadbelly, Aaron Neville and Freddy Fender are just a few who have served time in the worst prison
in the country, Angola Penitentiary. When Canadian blueswoman Rita Chiarelli ventured down
Highway 61 and performed for and with life sentence inmates, it was captured on film. Music From
The Big House is being shown at film festivals around the world. This soundtrack CD of this chilling
performance is available now. Also Live; Also Blues is Sean Chambers’‚ latest, Live From The Long
Island Blues Warehouse, which showcases the talent shown on his previous effort, Ten Til Midnight.
Another live album celebrates the first ten years of an annual concert master guitarist
Beppe Gambetta performs in his hometown of Genoa, Italy. Joined by many notables, this collection
showcases his dexterity to its‚ fullest. The Best Selling album by The Cool Kids, When Fish Ride
Bicycles, is now available on a double LP set - see page 8.
And so much more

We’dSpring,
like toMDput209in a tip o’ the hat to Keith Westmoreland leaving for greener pastures after
seven years at burnside - we appreciate all that he has done and wish him the best - as he
himself said, he is “finally fulfilling my lifelong dream to be the first in my family to purposefully
leave a perfectly good job full of good people in an industry I love for something I have virtually
no experience doing in an environment I’m not accustomed to.” If you need an architect......

AMERICANA
Adam Levy, The Heart Collector
After making a powerhouse record in 2007 with his hard-working NYC band, songwriter/guitarist Adam Levy
(Tracy Chapman, Norah Jones) decided that the surest way to grow as an artist would be to work on some musicfor-one. He spent the early months of 2010 crafting a batch of personal songs-ranging across a broad emotional
spectrum-then journeyed to Portland, Oregon, to work with producer/engineer Mark Orton (Tin Hat Trio).
Levy’s CD, The Heart Collector, is proof that his instincts were right all along.
“It is a great album overflowing with warm and soulful songs that enchant the ears and captivate the heart.”

Emily O’Halloran, Morphine and Cupcakes
Emily O’Halloran is not a trend-driven artist. Fresh and seemingly in her own world, she writes smoky
Americana, her husky voice enveloping each track like cut velvet. Delivering her poetically understated songs
in a penetrating baritone, Emily creates a cinematic Americana ghost town of landscape shot through with a raw,
mystical energy -- bordering at times on the shamanic. Her voice speaks volumes, like her lyrics, deep, intimate,
and intensely compelling; Think Nico and Tom Waits. For Morphine and Cupcakes, her debut outing, Emily joined
forces with producer Mark Howard (whose many legendary collaborators include Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams
and Tom Waits). Her debut album is a doped-up serenade for the Bonnies, the Clydes, the lovers and the thieves.
It is desert music, well past midnight in an old pick-up truck where you don’t know where the ground ends and
the stars appear.

Richmond Fontaine, The High Country
An operatically tragic tale is told in Richmond Fontaine’s 10th studio album, The High Country. Songwriter and
novelist Willy Vlautin has written an extraordinarily eccentric album like no other. More than a concept record,
The High Country is a song- novel: a fully realized, novel-sized story set to music. Set in a rural logging
community in Oregon, The High Country is a gothic love story between a mechanic and an auto parts store
counter girl, whose secret love inspires an effort to escape the darkness of the world that surrounds them -- drugs,
violence, madness, loneliness, and desperation set against a backdrop of endless logging roads and the
remains of a forest brutalized by logging. In this story of light vs. dark, Vlautin has woven a tale where fuck-ups
and freaks demonize the lives of innocents.

The Two Man Gentlemen Band, Presciption Drugs/Tikka Masala
Irreverent songwriters, virtuosic players, and consummate showmen, The Two Man Gentlemen Band has developed
a reputation as a must-see live act on the roots and retro music circuits. The single “Prescription Drugs (We’re
Having a Party!) / Tikka Masala” perfectly displays The Gents’ talent for writing “smart, funny, sharp-rhyming
songs that put them in the company of classics like Louis Jordon and Louis Prima” (Boston Phoenix).
“Prescription Drugs (We’re Having a Party!)” is an absurdly cheerful, retro romp about a decidedly modern topic.
The swinging flip side, “Tikka Masala”, celebrates a favorite cuisine in the spirit of one of the band’s chief
influences, Slim & Slam. Recorded live to tape using a single 1940s RCA microphone, this is the debut vinyl
offering from The Two Man Gentlemen Band.

BLUES
The Bottom’s Up Blues Gang, Handle It
The Bottom’s Up Blues Gang celebrates a decade of playing together with their third release, Handle It. The album
features a perfect patchwork of original music in the band’s eclectic blend of St. Louis Blues and New Orleans
Jazz, with instrumentation ranging from guitar and vocals up to a full band with organ and New Orleans horn
section. The band, based around a nucleus of guitarist Jeremy Segel-Moss and vocalist Kari Liston, have
surrounded themselves with a phenomenal gang of musicians to support a wide range of new sounds and
influences. The album also includes an outstanding version of “Drown In My Own Tears” recorded with
St. Louis’ legendary blues guitarist Bennie Smith, recorded before his death in 2006.

Sean Chambers, Live From The Long Island Blues Warehouse
One of Guitarist Magazine’s Top 50 Blues Guitarists of the last century, Sean Chambers is back with his first
live CD. Live From The Long Island Blues Warehouse captures the raw energy and excitement of a Sean Chambers
Band live show. The new CD continues the momentum generated by their last release, Ten Til Midnight. That CD
spent three months on The Living Blues Charts as well as reaching #5 on the XM/Sirius BB King Bluesville
Charts and #6 on The House of Blues Radio Charts. Recorded in a studio before a live audience provides the
best of both worlds, an accurate representation of the band’s live shows without sacrificing any sound quality
Songs range from the Elmore James standard, “Dust My Broom” to the blazing guitar work on Sean’s original,
“In The Wintertime”.

ELECTRONIC
The Franco Proietti Morph-Tet, Like The Shore Is To The Ocean
The third album by The Franco Proeitti Morph-tet pushes their unique Montreal electronic vision deeper into
funk and hip hop with excursions into funk prog, dub, and related; using an almost Zappa-esque attention to
complex composition and execution as all these elements are fused together along with turntablism to create
new adventures in the electronic diaspora. Their previous two albums were both on the Grammy longlist for
Best Contemporary Jazz. Like all Montreal musical collectives, the FPM ranks have been known to swell up to as
many as 10 people; creating a powerful live show that is unprecedented in scope and complexity. Watch for viral
videos, live touring, press and word of mouth to spread the word.

FOLK
Alana Amram And The Rough Gems, Snow Shadows: Songs Of Vince Martin
Musician Alana Amram didn’t choose to be an artist; she was just born that way. The daughter of legendary
composer/Beat icon David Amram became a traveling musician and storyteller at an early age. Drawn to the
songs of the late 50s and early 60s folk scene, it was only fitting that Alana would discover the songs of an influential but unknown songwriter, Vince Martin, whose recordings, solo and with Fred Neil, are prized by folk
cognoscenti. The result is Snow Shadows, a career-spanning collection of songs by Martin, produced by Mark
Sebastian (brother of The Lovin‚ Spoonful’s John Sebastian) and Jesse Lauter, who’s worked with The Low
Anthem, the album has a full, warm sound and a ton of heart. John Sebastian and Van Dyke Parks, who’d both
played on Vince’s 1973 Capitol album, Vince Martin, were reunited with Vince after more than 35 years.

Cristina Azuma, dreams
This is the long awaited solo recording since Cristina Azuma’s highly acclaimed Contatos CD from 1994.
“This CD came from my desire to put into music, the different moods that we experience when we become
parents — the exaltation of birth, the sleepless nights, our dreams and the childrens’ dreams, the compassion,
the solitude, the doubts, the joy we often feel with them. But also the games and the nursery songs which become
part of our existence and in this album, a source of musical inspiration. I am delighted to share with you this trip
through a world which is moving and personal, through these carefully chosen pieces. I wish to thank the
composers for their kind collaboration.” Cristina Azuma

Tracy Knoop Quartet, Getting Sentimental
A world renowned saxophone player, Tracy Knoop has played with greats such as Mel Torme, Ray Charles,
Natalie Cole, Buddy Rich, and held the lead alto chair for many years of The Tommy Doresey Orchestra under
the direction of Buddy Morrow, whom Knoop calls a mentor and friend - and dedicates this recording. As well
as being rooted in the swing tradition, Knoop’s snake-charmer alto sax lives in the roots of be-bop, turning
phrases in the house of Charlie Parker, Phil Woods, and Cannonball Adderly. Getting Sentimental, his first
widely distributed release, was recorded live, with back-up from old pals and musical brothers John Hansen,
Larry Holloway, and Greg Williamson.

The Young Lizards, Our Modern Lifestyle
The Young Lizards are a Seattle jazz-collective supergroup aimed at taking over the world with their
accessible yet complex harmonic grooves. They have transformed the traditional jazz organ quartet by
venturing into the rich, contemporary sounds of tunes such as Jaco Pastorius’ “Three Views of a Secret” and
compositions by John Coltrane, Joe Henderson and Woody Shaw and even originals. The creative progeny
of Seattle based saxophonist, Chris Fagan, The Young Lizards bring the Hammond B3 organ and drums to the
forefront as a driving, orchestral wave of sound on which the sax and guitar soloists ride.

Dessa, Castor, The Twin
Dessa’s first full-length record, A Badly Broken Code, introduced her to a national audience as a rapper, a singer,
and a potent, imaginative lyricist. It earned a binder of superlative reviews from sources like NPR, The Seattle
Times, and AM New York. To tour the album, she assembled a small cast of talented instrumentalists: vibraphone,
piano, viola, and stand-up bass for a classical, sometimes orchestral sound, a beautiful, somber effect re-interpreting the disc for a dynamic live concert. Part rap show and part cabaret, the elegant presentation charmed
both audiences and critics - not a negligible feat in hip hop, a genre with its share of purists. Castor, The Twin
captures these new arrangements for ten of Dessa’s strongest previously released songs. It also includes “The
Beekeeper”, the haunting advance single from Dessa’s new album due in 2012.

ROCK/POP
The Green Pajamas, Green Pajama Country!
Seattle’s Green Pajamas have taken a left turn from their psych-pop-guitar-rock and headed for the Country.
Jeff Kelly has always had a dalliance with country in his heart and in his music. Some of the songs on this CD
date back as far as 1986 to his earliest home-recorded releases, though these are brand new recordings. While
most songs are new, they reflect an old-school country sensibility; they would be more at home with Hank and
Johnny Cash than the country charts of today. Jeff and bass player Joe Ross have toyed with the idea of this album
for ten years. It needed to age. It was worth the wait. This is not a gimmick. It is not a marketing ploy. It is just
plain good music played from the heart. From its sly opening tribute to the classic westerns to the mournful
close, Green Pajama Country is a Classic.

IfIHadAHiFi, Nada Surf EP+3
Anyone can play a song, but not everyone can put themselves through the wind-sprint endurance tests that
IfIHadAHiFi’s sets, and records, consist of. Active since the year 2000, the Milwaukee based group have released
3 1/2 albums to an ever-increasing amount of critical acclaim. Their new release, the Nada Surf EP (its title a
response to the titular band’s use of the name If-I-Had-AHiFi for the title of their latest record) and its three
bonus tracks retain the aggressiveness of past recordings, while upgrading their melodic sensibilities on
songs such as “Spy in the House of Fuck” and the intense yet poppy “Arson, You Let Me Down.” Fear not,
however-their trademark feedback, howling synthesizers, and frenetic drumming are still front and center.

The Jim Jones Revue have been described as sounding like a car crash between Little Richard and The MC5,

Light For Fire, Light For Fire
Isolation, alcoholism, and unrequited love: These are the prevailing themes on Light For Fire’s debut album.
Forged from the ashes of a broken heart, J. Nicholas Allard (ex-Village Green) set about telling the story of a
summer spent in Brooklyn with an old friend, but riotousness and overindulgence have a price, and Allard paid
dearly. Enter Jeremy Sherrer: Having reconciled the differences that led to the demise of The Village Green, Allard
and Sherrer began discussing collaborating again. When Sherrer heard the sparse, raw-sincerity captured on
Allard’s demos, he became inspired. Spirited by an eagerness to shuck the anglophilic sounds that characterized
The Village Green and a mutual fondness for exotic instruments and world music, Allard and Sherrer set about
crafting an album of simple intricacies, with an emphasis on performance and honesty.

The Parson Red Heads, Yearling
The Parson Red Heads are one of the hottest new bands to ignite out of Portland, Oregon in 2011. Relentlessly
touring, they’ve recently toured with the likes of Blitzen Trapper, Alela Diane, Cotton Jones and are
scheduled for nation wide tours with Viva Voce and Fruit Bats in the Fall. The beautiful new release, Yearling,
has a timeless quality that continues and expands the classic pop-country-rock lineage stretching from
The Byrds and Fleetwood Mac to the Jayhawks and Wilco. Evan hears those reference points, but says the band
feels a stronger musical kinship with contemporaries such as Fleet Foxes, Dawes and even Tom Petty. Yearling is
the second full length release by The Parson Redheads, and their first vinyl full length release.

The Shore, Light Years
The Shore emerged from L.A.’s Silverlake district in 2002, sporting a vintage mix of West Coast psychedelic pop
influenced by The Beach Boys and Buffalo Springfield. After their debut EP and self-titled album were released
on Maverick Records, singer-songwriter Ben Ashley and producer Rick Parker (The Dandy Warhols, Beachwood
Sparks) began to work on their follow-up album, Light Years. This sophomore effort focuses on mood, nailing the
sepia toned textures of ’70s Cali-rock with a mix of knotted guitar arpeggios, sitars, mellotrons, strings, and
leisurely percussion. Light Years is a limited/numbered double vinyl only release which includes a digital
download card.

Sigourney Reverb, Bees In Your Bed Bad
This is Sigourney Reverb’s first record. They are from Ballard which is still in Seattle. This ain’t the Kinks and
it ain’t X or the Pixies. It certainly ain’t no saintly T-Rex and it is ridiculously catchy and it is ketchup-raw and
bloody but still deliciously sweet. But not as sweet as Jonathon Richman and the Modern Lovers. Well, maybe not.
Fourteen songs, twelve with hooks, thirty minutes and fifty-five seconds. Songs about Birds & Worms & Dirt,
Student Loan Payments, Unrequited/Not Unrequited Love, Sex, and Drowning. This record will make your day
better.

Southerly, Youth
With Southerly’s third full length, Youth, Portland, OR’s dark-pop auteur Krist Krueger takes on the very
notion of earned perspective through age & experience. Youth itself is a poignant exploration of life’s varying
stages of uncertainty and self-deception. Likewise, musically it explores shades of song structure with equal
measures of childlike wonder and nuanced pop expertise. Youth is not a “mature” album in the cliched sense.
Rather, and more importantly, it embodies exactly everything that the best music can be: a comforting
companion to our multitude of hopes and fears throughout all stages of life. Krueger never professes to provide
answers, but he’s asking the right questions.

Trophy Wives, Old Scratch
Old Scratch, the debut album from Louisville, Kentucky’s Trophy Wives, draws heavily from its place of origin
along the banks of the Ohio River, a locale with a rich musical history that includes indie stalwarts Rodan,
Slint, and Bonnie “Prince” Billy. Like the city’s favorite son, Muhammad Ali, the band knows its punches from
its poetry, and both are on ample display here. Playing on the loud-soft dynamics of its forebears but never
slipping into the trappings of genre, the band lays a thick and heavy groundwork throughout. From the assaulting screams of “Bless You All,” to the slinky bass and guitar lines that introduce “Picture Perfect,” to the silky
vocal intro of “616,” Old Scratch introduces a band that you’d regret to overlook. Take the punch and you’ll hear
the poetry.

Eugene Wendell and The Demon Rind, Meet Me in the Garden and We’ll See What Happens
Eugene Wendell Kwabena Copeland has been haunted by Bosch’s “Garden Of Earthly Delights” morbid
renderings since pulling the book of paintings from the shelf as a small child. In The Kinks’ “Lola Vs. The
Powerman & Money-go-Round Part 1” - the group sings hand-biting pop as the swarm of pop-stardom envelops
them to the dying strains of “got to be free”…The painting and Kinks record started a series of events that led
our hero to Vashon Island’s El Estacado studio many years later to conjure up musical demons with shamanic
guitarist, singer and producer Ian Moore. Meet Me In The Garden… is an exorcism of ripened, fermenting
life to the soundtrack of early 70s guitar.

White Orange, White Orange
After a year in space on the ufo, White Orange has returned with their self-titled debut album. Recorded in
Portland, Oregon, by Adam Pike (Red Fang, Icarus Line, Black Elk), this is the rock record of 2011 and is the
musical equivalent of shamanic time travel. They’re transmuting such bands as Kyuss, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr
& Mastadon into their own brew of psychedelic soda pop brought on by the spiraling evolution of sound. Tired of
soul-less weak indie bands? Are you taking psychedelic drugs in your bedroom? Are you having conversations
with the universe? Then this band is speaking to you. Features original cover art by Raul Casillas.

Florencia Ruiz, Light of the Night
On Light of the Night, the exquisite US debut from Florencia Ruiz, the 34-year-old Argentinean vocalist,
delivers proof thirteen times over that the international success she has experienced since releasing her first
CD in 2000 is sure to soar to even loftier heights once her music reaches our shores. Propelled by Florencia’s
haunting and ethereal vocals, the CD features an ensemble cast of musicians, including Brazilian cellist
Jacques Morelenbaum (Caetano Veloso, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Cesária Évora) and Uruguayan pianist Hugo
Fattoruso (Milton Nascimento, Hermeto Pascoal, Ron Carter). A true collaboration between Florencia and
producer Carlos Villavicencio, Light of the Night is a multi-faceted work that is enhanced even further by the
creative contributions of Argentinean musicians from the realms of rock, jazz, tango and classical music.

Vayo, Corazon Tropical
Vayo Raimondo has received three Grammy nominations in recent years. His Tango Universal was nominated
for both the Grammys (2011) and the Latin Grammys (2010). In this new album of Tropical music, he sings his
own compositions and lyrics in addition to some classic boleros and sons. Vayo interprets and arranges
his music for an acoustic ensemble of gifted South American musicians. Within the Tropical genre, Vayo employs
traditional rhythms and also creates some of his own.
