First thing---CONGRATULATIONS to Paul Avgerinos for his Grammy
Award for Best New Age Album---GRACE. It is often said that it is an
honor being nominated, but isn’t it just real nice when you win…and it’s
doubled when it is won by a nice fellow like Paul!!
Two and a half decades after they first got together, Unwritten Law
takes the unplugged route with their eight full-length album, Acoustic.
Leader Scott Russo welcomes back original drummer, Wade Youman,
with thirteen tracks well performed in a fashion no one ever really
expected from the band.
What can you say about Tom ‘Too Slim’ Langford and the Taildraggers
that has not been said before. Blues Awards by the handful both
nationally and regionally in the last thirty years with twenty or so band
and solo albums that have seen a half dozen of those on the Billboard
charts. Pyramids may rise and fall, but Too Slim just keeps rolling on.
No one has done more to humanize the dark sides of Reno, Portland,
Denver and other western cities than Richmond Fontaine. Twenty plus
years in the band will end its’ reign as the NorthWest’s finest AltCountry/Americana outfit whose songs of grit, grime and seedy reality
have been acknowledged worldwide. Their final album will be released
by Fluff and Gravy Records.
Bill Evans is one of the nation’s masters of the banjo. A few years back
he did an album with fiddler Fletcher Bright. For their second effort they
invited a fellow Fletcher had played with in a band some 60 years back--and so Norman Blake and his wife Nancy showed up to play a few
tunes also. The Blakes have garnered a few Grammy nominations over
the years so you can bet the musicianship is high on this album.
And peaking of Grammy nominees, Portland’s own Brothers of the
Baladi for their last album of their Middle Eastern music fused with
Western influences. And they cover Hendrix!
Skating Polly has grown up before our eyes. Now edging out of their
teenaged years, they offer their fourth album of riot grrrl/indie pop as
they continue to tour the world and gather acclaim oftimes reserved for
those well past their years.

Richmond Fontaine, You Can't Go Back If There Is Nothing To Go Back To
Recorded and produced in Portland, Oregon by long time collaborator and producer John Morgan Askew,
You Can’t Go Back If There's Nothing To Go Back To is Richmond Fontaine’s first to be recorded at
heralded Flora Recording and Playback. In addition to the vocals and lyrics of renowned novelist Willy
Vlautin, the record features the stalwart line-up of Sean Oldham on drums, Dan Eccles on guitar, and Paul
Brainard on pedal steel. Freddy Trujillo joins on bass for his first recording with RF, and long time friend
Jenny Conlee (The Decemberists, Black Prairie) plays keyboards. This is the band at its best. From the epic
"A Night in the City" to the pared-down acoustic "Three Brothers Roll into Town”, to Dan Eccles’ inspired
guitar work on “Don’t Skip Out on Me”, RF again has produced a treasure trove of beautifully executed
story songs, the likes of which are rarely matched in today’s musical landscape.

Blake on guitar and cello for ten of this project’s sixteen tunes. Recorded live in Fletcher’s living room atop
Lookout Mountain, TN over three days in July 2015, selections include both well-known and more obscure
traditional fiddle tunes along with more recent compositions from Norman Blake (“Blake’s March), Bill
Evans (“Berkeley Shanghai”), Sam Bush (“Norman and Nancy”), Bill Monroe (“Old Ebenezer Scrooge”) and

Angels finds Scott collaborating with jazz piano heavyweight Cyrus Chestnut, one of the finest Jazz &

The Builders and the Butchers, Salvation is a Deep Dark Well
On their second record The Builders and the Butchers had the good fortune to be working with Chris
Funk from The Decemberists & Black Prairie. Unlike their first records which was recorded in a living
room, Salvation was recorded in the legendary Type Foundry Studios in Portland Or. Salvation is a Deep
Dark Well features a multitude of guest instrumentalists and dense tracking of acoustic instruments,
giving each song its own unique flavor. Mr. Funk brought in a legit gospel choir for the final track The
World is a Top, and Analisa Tornfelt and Sebastian Bibb-Barrett fill our the sound with Violin and Trumpet.
The album was mastered by Portland legend Tucker Martine, who masterfully fit each of the pieces
together. This record was released in 2009 and is the Builders most widely acclaimed to date.

Liquid Generation, Quarter To Zen
Liquid Generation was one of Seattle's first Neo-Psyche bands in the early ‘80s. They released one
rocking/rave-up single, “¼ to Zen” b/w “I Love You,” then they were gone. Now it’s time for their first CD,
Quarter To Zen, 16 songs - all recorded long ago in the purity of 4 & 8-track analog, pushing the VU needle
way into the red. Inspired by the Pebbles/Nuggets style re-issues of the early ‘80s, they picked up the
gauntlet and ran with it, covering The Kinks, The Troggs, more obscure ‘60s bands like The Remains, The
Choir, The Ugly Ducklings, The Gants, and The Chob, plus Pacific NW rock and rollers The Wailers, Don
& The Goodtimes and more. Many of those are gathered here as well as a splattering of their own
compositions. Nothing pretty or sweet here, nothing clever, just pure rock from five young dudes with
nothin’ to lose.
