AWARDS DONATION Dianna Doddridge Person or Club Name: _______________________________ Amount Donated: $ __________________________________ One Year Donation or Two Year Donation AWARD SPONSORING: _____________________________ She got bit by the Garden club bug when, three years ago, NM Garden Clubs District I’s first Design club, “High Desert Design Club” formed. She has been at full speed and unstoppable since then. One club was not enough for her. She had the Garden Club bug really bad so, she joined several clubs. She is a very active member of each club she belongs to. You will never hear her say “No” when asked to help with anything! Shirley Tetreault, President of High Desert Design Club, says, “ She was determined to master the art of flower designing and learn as much as possible, which she has done. Her spirit and enthusiasm is amazing and a true breath of fresh air. She is an individual that works hard and will do anything that is asked of her. She is a true garden club member, a special friend and someone deserving of special recognition.” Debra Sorrell, President of Uptown Garden Club says, “She is everything you would want in a garden club member! She is ALWAYS there, ALWAYS participating, ALWAYS learning and ALWAYS encouraging the others in our club. There is nothing you could ask her to do that she would not, at least, attempt. She is a constant source of encouragement to everyone around her because she wants other to enjoy this hobby as much as she does. She is a really remarkable woman and an asset to New Mexico Garden Clubs.” If no specific award is sponsored, monies donated will be used for the general awards fund to fund a variety of awards for the year donated. HORTICULTURIST OF THE YEAR Cash Award sponsored by Valley Gardeners Garden Club In memory of John Hickerson Hui-chien (Bill) Shen Valley Gardeners Garden Club “The scope and breadth of the garden is amazing. There is a huge diversity of genera and varieties and much is shared with the community. It is also a water wise garden. There is NO DOUBT this gardener deserves to be Horticulturist of the Year!” Ellen Reed Horticulture Chair In addition, Bill is an avid dahlia grower. This passion brought him a new friend in John Hickerson, who was considered one of our local dahlia experts. John introduced Bill to showing dahlias and the garden club bug took it from there. MENTOR OF THE YEAR Recipient is chosen by the standing NMGC President 2015 New Mexico Garden Clubs Award Sponsors 2015 Mentor of the Year THANK YOU to the following people, for their Mary Ann Moreno support and contributions for awards. This year’s New Mexico Garden Club’s Member of the Year is a very special person to all of us. Webster defines “Mentor” as: someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger person. This year’s recipient is all of that and more! I would be challenged to find someone in New Mexico Garden Clubs who has NOT been mentored by her in some way, shape or form. She is: Smart A very active NM Garden clubs member Always willing to help out Willing to be a part of anything garden club Will learn a new subject just to teach and share it with others Is an avid volunteer Takes on any chairmanship that is in need Sponsors many of the NGC schools for NM Garden Clubs Is generous to a fault Will always be young at heart Is encouraging to all Very involved with children Makes us all step outside our own box Is involved at the state, regional and national levels Can talk almost anyone into any job! I have been known to say “She can sell snow to Eskimos!” She has been a personal mentor of mine for over 25 years. And, on occasion, you might hear me call her “My Other Mother” for better or worse. I am extremely honored to award New Mexico Garden Clubs Mentor of the Year to Mary Ann Moreno! The 2015 Silver Medallion Winner Laurie Hixson This year’s Silver Medallion recipient has not been a New Mexico Garden Club member for years and years. She has only been in our organization for 6 years. Yet, you would never know that! She is just as active, dedicated and passionate about New Mexico Garden Clubs as someone who has been deeply involved for twenty-five years or more . When she initially joined her garden club, it was not very active. She dove in and helped to excite them becoming the club President soon after. After her Presidency, she led the monumental effort of a garden installation at Bandelier National Monument. She was then asked to be her district Treasurer. She stepped up to the challenge and was instrumental in changing the District Scholarship Fund to include scholarships for members of the district to attend all Silver Medallion Winner (cont.) New Mexico Smokey Bear-Woodsy Owl Poster Contest Winner (cont.) National Garden Club schools offered by New Mexico Garden Clubs. When asked, she graciously accepted the position as our state Treasurer. As our newly elected state Treasurer, she worked tirelessly, side by side with the finance committee, for 100+ hours putting our NMGC finances back in balance.
