Piotr Adas
At age fourteen, Piotr started drawing letters with coloured
chalk pastels on the streets of his home town, Bydgoszcz,
in northern Poland. By fifteen, he was painting graffiti on
commuter trains and was accepted to the prestigious
Secondary Art School (PLSP Bydgoszcz) where he majored in
graphic design. At seventeen, Piotr left home and settled in
Toronto where his visual language has flourished. At twenty,
Piotr toured Canada, Vancouver to Halifax, painting large live
murals on stage along side pop stars like Shaggy, Bizmarkie,
Grand Masterflash and Jarvis Church of the Philosopher Kings.
Piotr studies at OCAD, lives and works in Toronto.

Dara Alter
Dara Alter is a recent graduate of the University of Guelph
in studio art. Dara concentrates on reconstructing domestic
spaces through painting and drawing. Her work explores colour,
and space, occasionally leaving the confines of the stretched
canvas, as she produces site-specific paintings on the floor or
the wall. Dara’s work has been shown in group exhibitions at
the Lonsdale Gallery (2009), the Drake Hotel (2009) in Toronto,
Zavitz Gallery (2009) in Guelph, and at the Literary Loft Centre
(2008) in Minneapolis. She is currently based in Toronto.

Daniel Joseph Bombardier
My name is Daniel Joseph Bombardier. I have lived in Toronto,
Vancouver, Calgary and Halifax throughout my life and currently
reside back in my hometown of Windsor. By trade, I am a
graphic designer/programmer. Over the past four years, I have
been developing new techniques using my skills to form my
mixed media art. I have been heavily involved in the Detroit
electronic music scene since the mid-nineties, which has been
a huge influence on my work. Pop culture and media are also
great contributors to the ideas present in my work. Since 2005, I
have immersed myself fully into my life as an artist and strive for
new opportunities always.

Denis R. A. Bouchard
Bouchard draws inspiration for his art from The Human Spirit, his
own and the people in his life. He paints “beyond the painting”
striving to paint nature and the human spirit from the inside
out. It’s this ability that allows his paintings to have a three
dimensional quality to them. Denis Bouchard has studied at the
Ontario College of Art, George Brown College in Toronto, and
the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. He
has been successfully exhibiting in galleries across Canada and
in Merida, as well as San Miguel de Allende Mexico for the past
12 years.

Christine Bunn
After completing a degree at the University of Ottawa, Bunn
began working as an illustrator in Toronto. Her work—personal
and interpretive responses to literary pieces—appeared in
publications such as Esquire, Atlantic Monthly, and New York
Times Magazine, and earned awards from the New York Art
Directors Club, the Toronto Art Directors Club, American
Illustration, and the Canadian National Magazine Awards.
Continuing to work as an illustrator, Bunn moved to the
countryside where her focus changed from introspection to
larger scale drawings and landscapes. Bunn has transitioned
this experience, bringing a sharply defined individuality and
sensibility to her emergence as an artist.

Stacey Camp
Stacey Camp is an emerging artist from Burlington, Ontario who
has recently graduated with a BA from the Alberta College of
Art and Design.
With a practice honoring the traditional use of figure ground
relationship and formalistic approaches to creating successful
compositions, her work merges together a use of collage and
highly saturated hues of paint.
Each piece is built with the goal of forcing ones eye to navigate
itself in and out of planes of a frozen sliver of space and time.
Inspiration behind Stacey’s art comes partly from landforms and
is intrigued by the symbolic infrastructure of martyrs.

Julie Campagna
Julie Campagna lives in Toronto and has been a sculptor
since graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design
in 1991. Along with her study of the human condition and
her dedication to realizing her ideas in three-dimensions, the
personal connection between artist and viewer has always
been an integral part of Campagna’s life’s work. In 2001, she
converted a second story apartment into a studio gallery and
opened her door to the public. Campagna Bronze studio gallery
offers a unique window into the sculpting process as well as the
opportunity to take private workshops and learn the technique
of wax modeling.

Jason Deary
I live and work in blue-collar, border-city, Windsor, Ontario. I
create mixed media wall works inspired by my surroundings.
My pieces explore the relationships between people and their
environments. I am interested in capturing energy, emotion and
attitude. I find myself pulling ideas from hip hop and punk rock
as much as I take from the visual world. My roots are in graffiti
and comic book illustration but I try my best to push these
influences beyond the standard and make them my own.
I am in my final year as an undergraduate in the BFA program at
the University of Windsor.

Andrea Stajan-Ferkul
Upon graduating from the Interpretive Illustration program
at Sheridan College, I spent several years working in fashion
advertising and the graphic design industry. Compelled to
re-immerse myself into painting and illustrating, I devote
my time to creating work which continues to evolve while
maintaining both spontaneity and discipline. I work in acrylics,
often incorporating pencil, prisma and mixed media into my
diverse range of subject matters.
I currently work from my home studio where I also contemplate
the ‘rules’ in the art world, deciding which one I want to break
today.

Sorya G
Originally from Afghanistan, I moved to Canada in 1995 and
currently work from my home studio in Ottawa. I see my art
as both a representation of my conscious and subconscious
emotions and imaginations. My works emerge from an
instinctual response to everything—love and friendships,
earth and landscape, in abstract forms. As an abstract artist, my
paintings depart in varying degrees from reality; the departure
can be slight, or completely non-representational abstract.
desert dancer I, 30” x 60”, acrylic
I work with texture and layers. I build the desired texture by
using brushes, my hands and other mediums. I’ve come to
‘expect the unexpected’ when using this technique. Like peeling
layers of wallpaper from an old house and discovering writing
on the wall, I often reveal a message within the paint’s language
that even I didn’t anticipate!
Jacub Gagnon
I used to think growing up in a small town was only possible
with an imagination. Since my move to the city and recent
graduation from OCAD, I’ve concluded that an imagination is
required no matter the scenery.
I currently live and practice as an artist in Toronto and for the
most part my work borders on the surreal. The images I create
question and provoke discussion on such ideas as the human
condition and man made vs. nature. My imagination is the
nucleus behind my art and with it I am able to bring such
whimsical creations to life.

Djanka Gajdel
Photography created a bridge for me into abstract painting—
both evoking emotion and providing a provocative way of
viewing life. Both transporting the viewer to see a glimpse into
the creators mind, from the strokes, composition, use of colour,
and texture, to the intensity or lack of colour. Painting tested
my courage, sense of surrender, ego and humility. This medium
allows me to sculpt, paint, to create texture; it permits the light
to be fractured onto the canvas. The stress on the paper from
the weight of the paint speaks about vulnerability and how one
medium must react to accommodate another—the constant
adaptability that exists in nature. The Contemporary Garden
series examines the energies and emotions of nature.

Maria Gernega
I have been passionate about art my whole life, excelling in
drawing and acrylic painting. The purpose of my work is to
enshrine those aspects of our lives that are beyond words,
whether dark or happy, by depicting them in a surreal,
illustrative manner. My style is influenced by tattoo art, futurism,
and surrealism (but not limited to these). My subject matter
is autobiographical, reflecting musical inspirations, emotions,
dreams, and philosophical ideas experienced in the moment of
creation.

Valda-Christine Glennie
Valda-Christine Glennie is a fine artist who, after spending many
formative years studying and working as a medical illustrator
and computer animator in Toronto and the US, returned to her
hometown to pursue a life long interest in portraiture from her
studio overlooking Dundas Street in London’s historic core.
She is a painter of people and places who often incorporates
architecture in her portraits as a result of being inspired daily by
the buildings around her. Natural heritage also finds its way into
her work as she explores the rural areas around London.

Sandra Goldie
Born in Toronto, but now living in Montreal, I grew up in the
Caribbean and Canada. I think this nomadic lifestyle contributed
to my desire to be creative.
My mother had this magic trunk. She would pull stuff out of it
and create new homes for us wherever we lived. As a result, I
studied Interior Design at Ryerson and worked as a designer
for ten years. After having my family, I returned to school and
completed a BFA (with distinction) at Concordia in 2001. It took
a while for me to figure out creating pictures was what was
important to me.

Kelly Grace
Kelly Grace believes strongly in creating images that brighten
the lives and homes of their owners. She strives to make work
that, no matter how many times looked at, always reveals
something new and interesting to the viewer. She makes
drawings and paintings in a modern style even though they are
of seemingly retro subject matter. Kelly has been quite serious
about art since she was a young teenager. She was trained at a
high school of the arts and in Interpretive Illustration at Sheridan
College. She is inspired by glowing sunlight and her family’s
puppeteering and carnival past. Kelly Grace is a nocturnal art
hermit who lives and works out of Toronto with her husband
who is also a painter. When she’s not making art she enjoys
knitting, sandwiches and pin curls.

I am living my dream.
In 1986, a refugee camp in Italy became my new home. I hoped
this would lead to a promising future in Canada. Italy provided
me with great exposure and opportunity to build on my artistic
addiction. I met a number of artists who influenced and shaped
my methods. I experimented with textile and porcelain painting,
which provided my family with a nominal income.
sun set, 30” x 30”, mixed media
Today, I cherish my moments as a painter. With continuous
influence from my past and daily life, my paintings are works
of passion, creativity, history, opportunity and sometimes
simplicity. I hope that art continues to fuel my passion for life
and encourages others to attain their desired dream.

Sally Hewson
Sally Hewson is a designer, synesthete and artist. She has
studied at the Toronto School of Art and privately with Frank
Pio, Ph.D, whose teaching method combines meditation with
drawing and painting. The project Looks Like Snow examines her
life-long experience of colour—grapheme synesthesia, where
all words, letters and numbers have highly specific colours as
an additional level of their meaning. Her paintings attempt to
capture the experience and document the precise hues of these
internally seen colours.
Sally is a member of the American Synesthesia Association. See

Lynn Jackson
Based in Toronto, Lynn Jackson is a multi media artist whose
work explores themes of memory, emotional and physical
displacement. Using primarily metal, Jackson creates work
that is informed by her years as a student of goldsmithing and
costume design. Using textile techniques taught to her by her
mother many years ago, Lynn knits metal wire which, for some
works, she combines with felted and dyed wool to meticulously
recreate the birthday dresses, nightgowns, bonnets and booties
she wore as a little girl.
She has sold her work across North America and has won
awards from both the Toronto Outdoor Art Show and The
Sculpture Society of Canada.

The arts have always been part of my life, and painting as a
practice has always been present in my everyday life. Over
the years, different interests and subject matters have been
reflected in my practice. But, for the last several years a steady
and predominant theme has figured in my paintings. That is
urban life: peoples, our surroundings, the relationship between
the human and the environment—the city.
To me painting has a life; a life of its own. Each painting has a
personality, character; it talks, it breathes, narrates a story. I truly
enjoy being part of this creation.

Kelly Lamorie is a freelance editor and photographer. She
studied film at Ryerson University and amongst several editorial
accomplishments has had two highly successful photography
exhibits—the latest, All is fair, in May 2009. All is fair is the
result of a photographic odyssey through the fairgrounds and
carnivals of southern Ontario. Kelly grew up in Crystal Beach,
Ontario, which was one of Canada’s oldest amusement parks
and the place where she became conversant with carnival
life. Kelly increasingly looks to the natural world as a subject,
exploiting natural lighting to reveal the hyper-real, lurking
within everyday subjects.

Jennifer, a desire that has been with her since she was a child,
making the decision to pursue the arts an easy one. A graduate
of the Ontario College of Art and Design, she began to develop
her work as an artist and broaden her experience working
in painting, sculpture, photography, and jewelry, and in her
thesis year when she was awarded the opportunity to study in
Florence, Italy. She has since continued her work and studies
in Venice, and has been granted a position to exhibit in the

Reuben Looyenga
Reuben Looyenga has been a working artist for nearly ten years.
Since graduating with a Honours BFA from Concordia University,
Reuben has shown in galleries across Canada.
His newest work delves into the investigation of the patterns
created by the visceral action of crumpling paper. Invisible
Cities is a series of portraits of the moment of crumpling paper,
an action that can be understood as rooted in frustration and
discarding of a negative mental space. By tracing meticulously
on the creases created by the act of crumpling, there are new
forms and patterns that are realized and often allude to the likes
of a city map.

Drawing and painting have been an ongoing passion for me
since childhood. My life as an artist began in Toronto. Since July
2008, I have been creating paintings using fluid acrylics. This
medium brings my art work to life providing boldness, intensity
of colour and a dynamic quality to each picture. My connection
to art is spiritual in nature, as my heart sings when I put colours

would like to brighten the world with colour.

Christopher Pew
Christopher Pew’s artwork embodies his unique philosophy
towards life. Each piece is a self-interpretive story. Subtleties of
symbolism allow the actual image itself to become the means
for the viewer’s own inner dialogue. Unique models, subject

of his artwork. Today, Christopher Pew is constantly learning the
different aspects of paint, and each series brings him towards a
new direction, a new vision and a new expression of creativity
and exploration.

Igor Sinitar
I was born in Kiev, Ukraine and now reside and work in Toronto,
Canada. I attained my OSSD from the Etobicoke School of the
Arts, as a visual art major, in 2005, and will receive a BFA from the
Ontario College of Art and Design, as a drawing and painting
major, in 2010. My motivation to make visual art is the endless
potential for self improvement by innovation of painting
techniques.

Ross Skoggard has studied, lived and practiced his art in New
York, Paris and Toronto. His mother and paternal grandfather
were professional fine artists. His article on his artistic family and
the influences that shaped them is on: www.beyondthecity.ca/

His stylistic development has evolved from the minimalist
abstraction he did in Paris and New York into the kind of
gestural figuration he practices today in oil, watercolour and
drawing.

He never works from photographs because he believes that
a representation is less evocative the more it reiterates the
camera’s rendition of perceived form and colour.

Kate Taylor
Kate Taylor is a fine artist based in Toronto, specializing in
abstract landscapes. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the
University of Western Ontario, Kate is committed to capturing
colour and energy in her mixed media acrylic paintings.
I love colour—I surround myself with bright and strong colour
because it gives me a feeling of energy and optimism. This energy
reminds me of nature; so many of my works incorporate organic
lines and spaces. I become intrigued with colour and pattern and
start to abstract images. The result is that my compositions are an
abstracted version of landscapes and seascapes.

Tanja Tiziana
Tanja Tiziana lives and creates in Toronto. Her photographic
work examines our notion of time in the bustling modern
metropolis. Cameras in tow, Tanja travels the world in search
of that decisive moment in which modern life and forgotten
history are blurred. With traditional film, integral film and digital
processes, she carves and shapes the field of view in order to
present images that defy reality and question our perception of
what is past and present.

Susan Valyi
I live outside a small Francophone town, St. Eugene on the
border of Quebec and Ontario. I studied at the Nova Scotia
College of Art and Design. I have painted and sculpted all my
life.
I work primarily on what I call my “last” series which explore
metamorphic human/animal postures that are both
anthropomorphic and sometimes mythical. I’m inspired by
quirky figurative gesture and emotion. I seek to communicate
through my work and I’m driven by the process of transcribing
an idea to the medium of sculpture which delights me in the
way it freezes time and gesture.

Ehrling White
Toronto-based visual artist Ehrling White carries on a family
tradition in the arts. He attended school at the Pacific Northwest
College of Art in Portland, Oregon, with a major in Painting,
and moved to Toronto shortly after. Ehrling’s painting style
is improvisational and abstract, but quickly yields a plethora
of perceived forms to the viewer’s imagination; his large
compositions at first appear to be two-dimensional, Miró-like
arrangements, but they quickly open up to great and surprising
depths. Working from layers of gestures, washes, stencils, and
other techniques, White explores the spontaneous generation
and interaction of imaginary forms. In his current body of work,
he is interested in the narrative and emotive power of simplified
shapes, and their ability to create dramatic space.
Janice J Ykema
Janice Ykema was raised in Niagara-on-the-lake and graduated
from OCAD in 2005 with a B.DES. Janice paints daily, challenging
herself to depict contemporary issues, through her personal
world view, by virtue of commonplace observations of life. Her
eclectic body of work is full of colour, somewhat impressionistic
in flavour, and quite often peppered with humour.
Her work has been shown in numerous juried group shows,
including Beaux-Arts Brampton, Artworks Oakville, Lakeshore
Arts, Neilson Park Creative Center, Etobicoke Art Group, as well
as Nuit Blanche, where her work has garnered both recognition
and rewards.

Gathering Sticks
We wait all year for summer.
Through bitter winds and long nights,
for some moments to bear our skins
and lay bodies aground without a thought,
eyes closed to the sun.
Throughout the land the earth is uncovered
before long all of nature seems to be building
and there we are gathering sticks.

Republic of Poland in Toronto
This exhibition is devoted to monumental installations which are, in actual fact, war crime
cemeteries. They are constructed on the very places where the genocide happened. Our
objective is to present the achievements of art, inspired by the horrors which mankind did
to fellow men, following blindly totalitarian ideas and mad men stripped of compassion.
Art sits in opposition to heinous human deeds, in opposition to the act of war. Our
intention is not to summon up demons of fear and revenge from the past, but rather
inspired by those outstanding works, continue the dialogue on how to find and reassess
ourselves in an everyday reality threatened by the reborn anti-culture of war and the
culture of the warrior.
