Since 1992, the program has provided arts programming to thousands of students and dedicated educators throughout the St. Louis region, breaking through economic and transportation barriers. For more information, visit cocastl.org/cocaedu. IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCIES ALL AGES In these 4- or 8-week residencies led by COCA teaching artists, students will design and create a large scale piece of art. Through structured conversation, and as a part of the design process, students will identify and create personally meaningful symbols to express the concepts explored in Outside In: Paint for Peace. Participating teachers have the opportunity to schedule a field trip for their students to visit the exhibition and receive a copy of Painting for Peace in Ferguson by Carol Swartout Klein. OUTSIDE IN: PAINT FOR PEACE MILLSTONE GALLERY AT COCA | AUGUST 27–OCTOBER 30, 2016 Showcasing the power of the arts, COCA presents a selection of the murals painted on the boarded-up storefronts by amateur and professional artists in the days and weeks following the 2014 protests in Ferguson, MO. Guest curated by Jacquelyn Lewis-Harris, Outside In: Paint for Peace is presented in collaboration with the Sheldon Art Galleries, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Carol Swartout Klein, author of the award-winning children’s book Painting for Peace in Ferguson. Additional presenting and program partners include the Ferguson Youth Initiative, Missouri History Museum and the Vaughn Cultural Center. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP WED, SEP 14, 2016 | K–8 TEACHERS | 4:30–7:00PM Learn how to engage students in lessons and dialogue about COCA’s exhibit Outside In: Paint for Peace using visual art, observation and description. Participants will be guided through a stepby-step art project, which they can later replicate in their classrooms. Throughout the workshop, teachers will reflect on how to use these experiences as a point of integration with social studies and communication arts curricula. FIELD TRIPS ALL AGES See page 7 for information on the exhibition Outside In: Paint for Peace. 42 | 2016–2017 The Guide Teachers and art specialists are invited to schedule 45-minute group visits to Outside In: Paint for Peace in the COCA Millstone Gallery. To schedule an Outside In: Paint for Peace field trip, contact Sarah Bliss at 314.561.4859 or [email protected]. cocastl.org | 43 SUPPORT THE COCA ANNUAL FUND COCA is a not-for-profit organization that brings people from all corners of our community together to experience the joy and personal growth offered by the arts. Class Passes are meant for experienced dancers and can only be used for intermediate- and advanced-level dance classes. Class Passes can be purchased online or in person at the Registration Office. Participation in classes is subject to availability. PLACEMENT CLASSES: At the beginning of the year, all students are carefully placed in classes appropriate for their technical level. The first three weeks of each semester is considered the placement period; however the COCA artistic staff reserves the right to move students as needed throughout the semester depending upon their technical progression. You are not required to register before taking a placement class; however a spot in the class is only guaranteed if you are registered for the full semester. Tuition is not pro-rated if you register for the class after the placement trial. To take a placement class, simply visit the front desk or the COCA Registration Office prior to the class to pick up the appropriate paperwork. Afterward, the instructor will provide feedback and a recommendation for class registration. MAKE-UP POLICY: Students who miss class due to injury, illness or personal absences are allowed to make up classes. Absences caused by inclement weather, class cancellation and building closures are not required to be made up, but it is highly encouraged. Students make up a class by completing the Make-Up Form and giving the form to the instructor for the class make up. Make-Up Forms are available at the front desk, in the Registration Office and online on COCA’s website. If Make-Up Forms are missing information or are illegible, to the point where Patron Services cannot process them, the make-up class will not count toward attendance. Students are allowed to attend another section of the class if it meets on a different day or a class in the same discipline of a lower level. Missed classes must be made up by the end of the semester. We do not pro-rate classes for late registrations. COCA, we place great emphasis on the student-teacher relationship and value a process-based approach in the studio. COCA’s more than 200 teaching artists are highly qualified in their fields, having professional experience in their art forms and a depth of teaching expertise. Our goal is to inspire students to develop not only skills in the arts, but also the artistic process of an artist and the new ways of thinking that quality arts experiences provide. COCA’s educational approach is rooted in Studio Habits of Mind, a framework developed by a research team from Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. This framework helps to define quality teaching and learning across disciplines, sites and programs, and provides a common language for COCA staff, faculty, students and the community. DEVELOP CRAFT Learning to use tools, materials and artistic conventions, and learning to care for tools, materials and space. ENGAGE & PERSIST Learning to embrace problems of relevance within the art world and/or of personal importance; learning to develop focus conducive to working and persevering at tasks. HORTON TEACHER WORKSHOP Ana Marie Forsythe, Chair of the Horton Department at The Ailey School August 15–19, 2016 | 11:00AM–4:00PM | COCA $500* | Activity Code: 7794 *Materials not included. This exclusive workshop gives dance teachers, dance scholars, and professional dancers the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the Horton vocabulary, review Horton studies and practice this unique American modern dance technique under master teacher and scholar of the Horton vocabulary Ana Marie Forsythe. Enhance your teaching skills and receive an all-inclusive view of the technique. Learn how to train students to use proper body alignment, improve strength, coordination and flexibility as well as the ability to adapt to all styles of dance. Each session includes fresh content, lectures, demonstrations, and “hands on” approaches for teaching all levels of Horton. Since 1979, Ms. Forsythe has been the Chair of the Horton Department at the prestigious Ailey School. She is the co-author of The Dance Technique of Lester Horton and the artist director of five Horton technique videos. “With a sprinter’s upper body strength, a gymnast’s flexible lower back, and a classical dancer’s articulated feet and legs, Horton dancers are athletic and expressive instruments. The technique produces an overall effect of fierceness, something many working choreographers desire.”—Dance Magazine REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND MATERIALS Some knowledge of the Horton Technique is preferred and participants must have three years of teaching experience. Required materials include the book The Dance Technique of Lester Horton and the DVD Lester Horton Technique: The Warm-Up. Items may be purchased at Amazon.com. ENVISION Learning to picture mentally what cannot be directly observed, and learning to imagine possible next steps in making a piece. EXPRESS Learning to create works that convey an idea, a feeling or a personal meaning. OBSERVE Learning to attend to visual contexts more closely than ordinary “looking” requires, and thereby learning to see things that otherwise might not be seen. REFLECT Learning to think and talk with others about an aspect of one’s work or working process; learning to judge one’s own work, working process and the work of others. STRETCH & EXPLORE Learning to reach beyond one’s capacities, to explore playfully without a preconceived plan and to embrace the opportunity to learn from one’s mistakes. UNDERSTAND ARTS COMMUNITY Learning to interact as an artist with other artists—in classrooms, in local arts organizations and across the arts field—and within the broader society.
