The Grant Park Summer Shade Festival has earned a reputation as the place to see some of the hottest
up-and-coming bands as well as a plethora of local talent. With two stages keeping the tunes flowing all
weekend, Summer Shade stages offer a range of genres and plenty of greenspace from which to enjoy
them. This year, you’ll get to hear the sounds of Flat Duo Jets, Michelle Malone, Stonerider, Kick the
Robot, Historical Mercyland Abstract, The Old Ceremony, Blacktop Rockets and more!

michelle mal0ne
Flat Duo Jets was an American
psychobilly band from Chapel
Hill, North Carolina, and Athens,
Georgia. They were a major
influence on several bands of the
1990s and 2000s, including The
White Stripes. Their first album,
Flat Duo Jets, was recorded direct
to two tracks in a garage in the
late 1980s but not released until
early 1990. Their ninth and last
studio album, Lucky Eye, was
their first major label release.
Atlanta native Michelle Malone is
“equal parts badass guitar slinger
and sweet songstress” (Guitar World).
Malone has is currently recording a
new album, touring the U.S., as well
as performing in a new band led by
SugarLand’s Kristian Bush. Her shows
are upbeat, personable, “raucous
and jubilant” (Rolling Stone). She can
make the biggest arena seem cozy as
a campfire and an intimate venue
feel like the center of the universe.
Her live show is NOT to be missed.
(Atlanta Journal).
kick the robot
stonerider
Stonerider are a lean, focused rock band who have toured both the U.S. and
Europe. Steadily evolving since their energetic 2008 debut on Trustkill Records,
four years later they released a sprawling double-LP called “Fountains Left To
Wake” which explored their wide variety of influences from psychedelic to
soul. On their new album “Hologram” we find a band holding themselves to
a higher standard of song craft, storytelling, performing, and arranging. The
songs are both lush and economical, propelled forward in no small part by an
expanded lineup who excels at live performance.
Kick the Robot count both Elton John and Collective Soul among their
growing fanbase. Formed in 2006, this young power pop trio, driven by
great songwriting and outstanding vocal harmonies, bring an infectious new
energy to alternative rock. They are winner of the Atlanta Hard Rock Rising
2012. Kick the Robot write and perform all original music. Influenced by
everyone from The Beatles and The Zombies to modern day rock stars like
Marcy Playground, The Raconteurs and OK Go, this group aspires to bring
back hook-driven, uninhibited rock ‘n roll.

KIDs ZONE
presented by bright horizons
It wouldn’t be a festival without something special for our young visitors, and
Summer Shade has got that covered. In the Kids Zone presented by Bright
Horizons, kids can catch air on the Spider Jump and then roll up their sleeves
to participate in plenty of hands-on craft activities, many of which are completely
free! Summers in Atlanta are hot, even in the shade. Why not cool off with Water
Wars, where kids can blast each other with refreshing water from a variety
of squirters? After getting creative, youngsters can relax and check out the
live performers, musicians and storytellers just right for little ears and young
audiences. Entertainment in the Kids Zone is offered by both young performers
and seasoned professionals, so there is sure to be something to inspire the next
generation of performers.

Grant Park is not just a neighborhood surrounding a park of the same name; it is a community. As such, the Summer Shade
Festival welcomes numerous community partners to exhibit at the festival. We hope that in between listening to some live
music, grabbing a beer, and perusing our Artist Market you will take the opportunity to talk with our community partners and
learn how these local small businesses and non-profits are helping to make Grant Park such a wonderful place.

Love of your park is tax deductible - join the
Grant Park Conservancy, and help maintain this
city's oldest public park!
Grant Park Conservancy
The Organization that Supports the Park!
The Grant Park Conservancy (GPC) is a non-profit, membership-based organization. We
are committed to the restoration, renovation, beautification and maintenance of historic
Grant Park, Atlanta’s fourth largest park.
GPC is funded entirely by donations. As such, we cannot make an impact in the park
without your help. There are several ways you can get involved: Find us online at www.
gpconservancy.org and click on “Donate.” Become a member at any level, purchase a
commemorative brick for a loved one, or simply donate to the Conservancy. Visit our
Farmers Market every Sunday from 9:30am until 1:30pm from April through December at
Milledge Fountain and support local farmers and craftspeople. While membership is key
to our success, we also need volunteers to help us with projects throughout the year. You
can help by volunteering for projects such as mulching, planting, trash removal and more.
If you are interested in volunteering with the GPC, send an email to info@gpconservancy.
org.
Our current projects include the Milledge Triangle Initiative, upgrading the picnic areas
throughout the park, providing much needed care and pruning to the park’s special tree
canopy, installing new trash cans to help fight litter, and updating the lighting throughout
the park.
The Milledge Triangle Initiative is our most ambitious project to date, with a project
budget of over $550,000. The Milledge Triangle is the area of Grant Park surrounding
the Milledge Fountain at the intersection of Milledge Street and Cherokee Avenue. The
Milledge Triangle is one of the most visited points in Grant Park. However, due to longterm neglect and lack of funds, the Milledge Fountain, as well as its surrounding features
and greenspace, have fallen into significant disrepair. The Milledge Triangle Initiative will
rejuvenate this key historic gateway – preserving and restoring its historic origins while
simultaneously creating a beautiful place where park visitors can gather. But, we cannot
make this project happen without the support of the community and our members!
The Conservancy relies on your memberships, donations and participation to continue
our mission. Visit our booth, and we’ll sign you up as a member today. You can purchase
T- shirts, magnets and bottled water with all proceeds going to the Conservancy for park
improvements. Please consider becoming a member and supporting the Conservancy
today!
