MID-WEEK LENTEN
Worship and Soup & Bread
Soup suppers (soup and bread) will be held
at 6:00 PM on Wednesday evenings in Lent before the
7:00 PM worship service beginning February 25. A
variety of delicious soups and breads will be provided by
the following groups in the church:
Mar. 4 - Senior, Gathering, and Handbell Choirs
Mar. 11 - Worship and Music and Property
Mar. 18 - Stewardship and Finance
Mar. 25 - Christian Education and Sunday School teachers
Committees should be at church around 5:15 to set up and
get coffee going. One soup should be vegetarian and one
bread gluten-free. Supper starts at 6PM with prayer.

WHAT’S AN AED?
If you were wondering what that thing hanging on the
wall on the way up to the sanctuary is, now is your chance
to find out!
On Sunday March 8th, Syed Mustafa, a Paramedic and
Vice President of North East Quadrant ALS and a Captain
of the West Webster Fire Department, will come to
Immanuel to tell us about the use and warning signs to
look for that would indicate when you need to implement
this life saving equipment.
The information session is after the second service on
March 8th at 12:15. Stay after or return for this very
important message. It could be the difference in helping to
save someone’s life.

“There is one body and one Spirit,
just as you were called to the one
hope of your calling.” (Ephesians
4:4) I believe these are good words to remember as we
enter the time between Pastor Paul’s retirement and the
calling of your next pastor. A pastor is usually the key
person in a congregation; simultaneously being the glue
that holds it all together, the maintainer of orthodoxy, the
chief caregiver, and the driving force behind new
programs. A time without a pastor can feel like a
wilderness. While some things will indeed slow during the
transition, Immanuel’s overall mission and calling from
God does not. We continue to urge ourselves forward,
growing in faith and serving God’s kingdom.
I will be serving as your “transitional pastor” during this in
-between time. My responsibilities can be summed up as:
-Organizing supply pastors to lead worship
-Visits to shut-ins and those in the hospital
-Attending church council meetings and other key
meetings
-Performing weddings and funerals
-Being available to you with office hours and by
appointment
-Prayerfully guiding the process of calling a new pastor
I’m contracted to devote 20 hours per month to these tasks.
That may not seem like a lot of time, but I find it’s usually
adequate.
Many people have already asked the question, “How long
before we have a new pastor?” My answer is, “I don’t
know.” Immanuel is a healthy and solid congregation. It
has many appealing qualities. However, there aren’t a lot
of experienced pastors looking for calls. Calling a pastor
is very different from hiring an employee. Think of it as a
search process rather than a hiring process. I suggest
letting the Spirit guide you through this time. Certainly
spend time in prayer. Don’t rush just to get it done. The
time may be short, or in may be long. God will meet our
needs no matter what happens.
Finally a little about myself: I am the pastor of St. John’s
Lutheran Church in Victor, where I’ve been for the last
fifteen years. Prior to becoming a pastor I worked as a
bridge inspector focusing on long-span and moveable
bridges. I live in Canandaigua with my wife, two kids and
a less-than-well-behaved dog. As a Pennsylvania native I
faithfully root for the Philadelphia Eagles, saving myself
the annual turmoil of Bills fans!

Coming Together
On Thursday, March 19th at 7PM, ImmanuBells will
present a concert of sacred music at Covenant United
Methodist Church, 1124 Culver Road, Rochester (across
the street from the Golden Fox restaurant). The concert is
part of the Music Series during Lent and is open to the
public. You are invited to come and worship!
St. John's Home - People Pushing
March 29 at 12:30 pm
People-pushing is an opportunity to assist residents of St.
John’s Home. Many residents wish to attend the Sunday
afternoon worship service in the chapel but need a little
assistance maneuvering their wheelchairs through the
hallways. That is where you come in! We will meet at
church at 12:30 pm, carpool to St. John’s, push people to
and from the service, and return to church around 3:30. If
you do not wish to car pool meet us at the chapel at
1:15. You will enjoy interacting with some delightful folks
while testing your ability to return the residents to their
proper location! This is a wonderful family activity. They
are very appreciative of your help, so do come!! Please

As we think of this time of
transition for Immanuel, I believe
that the most important thoughts to
consider are those of community
and togetherness. It would be easy to become anxious or
even disconnected from the importance of remaining a true
community of Christ, by all the activities related to
maintaining regular services and calling a new Pastor. Still,
these activities remind us that we (all of us, from youngest
to the oldest members of the congregation) are truly the
church and that although a pastor provides us with essential
guidance, care and message, it is truly up to the members of
Immanuel to join together to strengthen our connections to
each other, the community and the Word.
Immanuel has been very careful through the years to
build the strong physical, financial and spiritual underpinnings that will allow us to maintain a caring, stable
environment for this time of growth. This strength allows
us to focus on each other, especially those in need, to make
sure that everyone feels that they can depend on the
community of Immanuel. We want to insure that all feel
welcome to participate in the life and work of the church in
this exciting time of opportunity.
I will be giving regular updates on our Pastoral Call
progress in the Open Door and during the worship service.
I will also be using those opportunities to talk about how
the different committees and groups at Immanuel are
meeting challenges or taking advantage of opportunities to
further the mission of our faith community during this time
of transition.

NEW BULLETIN INSERT
Beginning February 22, Immanuel will use the “Celebrate”
insert in our Sunday bulletins. This insert contains all the
Sunday scripture readings, the Prayer of The Day, and
introductions to the scripture lessons. The committee is
going to review its use and then decide if it should continue
beyond August. Your comments are welcomed.

Men’s Breakfast
Men’s Breakfast will meet the second &
fourth Wednesday of the month at 8:00 AM
at the Nutcracker Restaurant (Empire Blvd.)
Hunger Boxes for Lent
Hunger boxes for Lenten sacrificial offering are available at
the church doors. Boxes can be returned during Holy
Week and all gifts will be sent to the ELCA World Hunger
Appeal.

WEEKDAY BIBLE STUDIES
Dear Members of Immanuel:

times? I don’t think so.
Thank you for the delightful, wonderful retirement
“party”. It was a great time of celebration.
Thank you for the kind, appreciative words spoken both
publicly and personally. The feeling is mutual.

The evening Bible Study meets on the first and third
Mondays of the month 7:00 – 8:30 PM. The morning
Bible Study meets at 10:00 – 11:30 AM on the first and
third Thursdays. Both Bible Studies meet at Immanuel.

WELLNESS ON WEDNESDAYS – WOW!
Join us for Wellness on Wednesdays at 10:00
AM! Come and enjoy fun, food and fr iendship, with
a program, chair exercise, blood pressure check and a
delicious lunch.
The program schedule –
March 4 - 'Heroes in the Attic - The Untold Story
of Two Civil War Soldiers' - Local author Dennis
Bielewicz will share the amazing true saga of two
college students in Lima, N.Y. who abandoned their
classes two months before their graduation to fight
in the Civil War.
March 11 - 'Irish Singers' - To get us all in the
mood for St. Patrick's Day, Doris Adamak will
review a variety of Irish singers and treat us to
examples of their music as well.
March 18 - 'The Outreach Players' - Come and
enjoy the music of members from the Rochester
Chapter of the American Recorder Society as they
share a potpourri of songs on their recorders. They
will be sure to include some Irish favorites!
March 25 - 'Linus Project' - Once again we will tie
fleece blankets to donate to this worthy cause.
Enjoy time with WOW friends as we help to create
comfort and warmth for others.
Come and join the fun – and bring a friend to share it
with! Transportation is available by calling the church
office (872-5180) by Tuesday at 10:00AM. A $2
donation for lunch is requested. We look forward to
seeing you!
What a wonderful celebration on Sunday February 8 for
Pastor Paul and his ministry over the years! The song
from the 7 Dwarfs made all smile! Thank you to
Cheryl Davies, Barb Stam and all of their helpers for
all the work and planning they did for the event!

Confirmation Camp
Youth in grades 7 and 8 are encouraged
to attend Lake Chautauqua Lutheran
Camp July 12-17, 2015. If you are
planning on attending, please contact
Dave Ekimoff (872-5180). Space is limited at the
camp and they accept registrations on a first-come, firstreserved basis. Applications will be available the
beginning of March and a non-refundable deposit of $75
is due by March 24th.
Webster Support Group
The Multiple Sclerosis Society is a
nonprofit organization that provides
information, education, referrals, and
support for people living with MS. The Upstate New
York Chapter covers a 50 county region across the state
and our chapter headquarters is here in Monroe County.
We offer several support groups in Monroe County, one
of which is in Webster. For 25+ years the Women’s Club
of Webster has volunteered to provide this group with
lunch twice per month when we meet. Group members
enjoy a meal along with socialization, support and
friendship with others who can truly relate to what it is
like to live with MS.
Please join us on March 12th and 26th, our next meeting
dates at noon. For more information, please call either

Souper Bowl of Caring
Thank you from the youth of
Immanuel for your support of the
Souper Bowl of Caring! We
collected 164 cans of soup and $418, which will
support the children in our area who participate in
our Back Pack Ministry Program, which provides
weekend food for children and their families.
Backpack Food Ministry
The Weekend Food Ministry continues
to provide supplement food for students in Webster
Elementary Schools. We collect a different food
item each week; however, you may bring any item
on the list any week. The Sunday School classes
have a classroom item assigned to promote their
awareness of this program. There is a blue box in
the lower level entry of the church to collect the
food. The items are stored together at church and
bags are packed for distribution on a weekly basis.
As of December we are filling 62 bags a week.
If you prefer to support the program with a check
please make it payable to Immanuel with backpack
program in the memo. Thank you to all who
participate in this ministry. You are making a
difference in the lives of others.

Easter Plants 2015
Once again, we look forward to Spring and Easter
Sunday! Here is an opportunity to contribute lilies,
tulips, hydrangea and azaleas to adorn our sanctuary in
celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord. The plants
will be provided by Kittelberger Florist and will come in
6” pots. Please return this form to the offering plate or
the church office by Sunday, March 22, 2015. Checks
should be made payable to Immanuel Lutheran Church
with a notation of “Easter Flowers”. Please feel free to

SANCTUARY FLOWERS
Flowers are a lovely way to remember someone or
mark a special occasion. There are dates available
for the month. If you would like to offer sanctuary
flowers for our Sunday morning services, please sign
up on the sheet next to the choir room. Contact
Sheri Williams (585-770-3733) if you have any
questions! God's peace to you all.
Looking for something to do during the cold winter
months? It is a great time to work on prayer shawls.
Not only will it keep you warm while you are
working on it, it will help our Prayer Shawl
Ministry. Once your prayer shawl is done, just drop
it off to the church office.
Knitted Prayer Shawl Instructions
Supplies -
3 skeins of Lion Brand Homespun yarn
Size 11 or 13 knitting needles
Pattern Cast on 57 stitches. For the first row,
knit 3, purl 3 to the end of the row. Turn and knit
the purl and purl the knit. Each row will begin with
knitting 3 stitches. A weave pattern will develop.
Knit about 2 ½ skeins in this pattern. Use the rest of
the yarn for fringe – either 3 inches or 9 inches long
– and use a crochet hook to pull it through the ends
of the shawl.

Pattern Chain 91 loosely
Row 1: (right side): (dc, ch 2, sc) in the fourth ch
from hook, *skip next 2 ch, (2dc, ch2, sc) in the next
ch.
Repeat from * across.
Row 2: ch2, turn (2dc, ch2, sc) in the first ch 2 and
in each ch 2 spaces across
Repeat row 2 until you have used 2 ½ skeins of yarn
(or the piece is about 6’ long).
Do not finish off.
Last row: ch 2 turn: * sc in first ch 2, ch 2.
Repeat from * across and end with a sc.
Finish off, add fringe to the first and last rows as
desired with the remaining yarn.

of someone in our church family who has had a
baby, recently been hospitalized or ill, surgery, death in
the family, or could just use a helping hand. The
shepherd can provide a simple meal, a warm thought,
or locate a volunteer to help.

IMMANUEL PRAYS…
Prayer is a central part of Christian life.
Through prayer we connect with God and
raise up joys and celebrations, concerns
and sorrows. Through prayer we listen to
God and open ourselves to God’s will in
life. As Christians we pray not only for ourselves, we
also pray for others and for the mission of the church.
We all know the comfort that comes when we know
someone has lifted us in prayer. When we lift up
others, it brings us closer to each other and to God.
At Immanuel we have two prayer chains – one is via
email; the other by telephone. If you would like to be a
part of Immanuel Prays…, please contact the church
office with either your email address or telephone
number. We will add you to the prayer chain.
If you have a need or a joy to share, you can email the
