Robert Davis, a Professor of Genealogy at Wailace Community College near Cullman, AL, will speak at both a moming and an aftemoon session covering such subjects as research facilities available at the College; What's New in Genealogy and other pertinent topics. A popuiar speaker, Mr. Davis was also associated with the Georgia Archives so he is well versed in his field. Please see the enclosed flyer for details. Hugh W. Barrow, of Dalton, GA, a member of this Society, has compiled a fascinating book conceming his great grandfathe/s Civil War seNice in Cobb's Legion, Company B. A review of this book and information on how to obtain a copy is featured on another page of this Quarterly. Copies of it have been donated by lrr. Banow and members of his family to a number of local libraries and the iruseum of the Confederacy in Richmond, VA. I hope everyone remembered that dues of $20.00 per individual or family were payable in January. We don't want to lose a single one of you. To each of you who has sent in material for the Quartedy and/or our files at the Neva Lomason Library, our special thanks. And please continue to send in items of interest. Turner, 650'1 Peacock Blvd. Monow, GA 30260-2519 Research has been underlaken to determine the matemal lineage of Sophronia Elizabeth TURNER who was enumerated in the household of Larkin TURNER in the 1850 Census of Canoll County, age 10, and in the household of Larkin's son Riley TURNER in the '1860 Census of Meriwether Co., age 20. Findings to date are that she was bom 19 Mar'1839 in Coweta Co. GA, died 3 Apr 1929, Canoll Co. GA, and was buried 6 Apll929 in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cem., Canoll Co. Sophronia Elizabeth manied (1)25 Aug 1863, CanollCo., to Benjamin Franklin KINNEY, son ot William KINNEY Jr. and Lucinda HAYNES. KINNEY had enlisted in Co. F, Cobb's Legion in Carollton in 1861 and died in a Richmond, VA, hospital in June 1864. There was a daughter, Virginia Amelia, by this maniage. William KINNEY Sr. v,/as a neighbor of Larkin TURNER in the Hickory Level community and two of the KINNEY sons manied daughters of Larkin TURNER. Sophronia Elizabeth manied (2) widower James l. SCOGGINS on 4 Feb 1866 in Canoll Co. There were three children by this maniage: daughters Camila, lona, and Sophronia. SCOGGINS died testate on 10Aug 1877 in CarollCo. Sophronia Elizabeth manied (3) widower Rev. Starling Tucker SIMS in Canoll Co.on9July1879. There was one child, son Starling TuckerJr. by this maniage. The senior SIMS died 27 Oct 1906 and is buried beside his first wife, Emily BRADBURY SIMS, in the Bethel Baptist Church Cem. in Temple, GA. tjpon the death of his mother in 1929, the junior SIMS was the informant for Sophronia's death certificate, and gave her mothe/s maiden name as Elizabeth TURNER and her fathe/s name as "unknown." The name on her tombstone is "Safronia E. Sims." Larkin TURNER did have a daughter named Elizabeth, bom 31 Oct 1813, but she manied Alexander EATON in Canoll Co. on '10 Jan 1833, and they moved to Cobb Co. GA before 1850. By 1850 she had bome him four children, the third being bom on 2 Nov 1839 in CanollCo., and the second child was bom in 1838. Sheisnotalikely candidate for the mother of Sophronia. Larkin TURNER also had a granddaughter who manied a son of Sterling T. and Emily SIMS. While searching the 1920 Census Soundex for the SIMS family, the name "Estee Sims" popped up and not until several film frames later did it sink in that "Estee" was the phonetic spelling for "S. T.," which were the initials often used by both father and son. Reversing the film, it was found that this was indeed the family being sought. The IGI has an entry submitted in 1987 of a maniage between Benjamin Franklin KINNEY and Elizabeth Tumer EABEEB in Canoll Co. in 1863. The source document for this entry led to a gentleman in Oklahoma who said the information came from a book, Kincheloe. McPherson. and Related Families published in '1951, that he made the entries from the book through special dispensation by the Mormon Church, and thal he had no other knowledge. Obtaining a copy of the book, it was found that the information was fumished by the late Mrs. Guy Herbert WELLS, formerly Ruby Mae HAMMOND, bom 1891 in Douglas Co., lvho was the wife of the 1934-1954 president of the Georgia Stale College for Women; that Mr. WELLS was bom in Canoll Co.; and that Mrs. WELLS was the granddaughter of Sophronia Elizabeth Tumer LIABeEE and Benjamin F. KINNEY. Mrs. WELLS was a genealogist and had fumished transcripts of -4Turner Research, Cont'd. the KINNEY family Bibles (which state that Elizabeth Sophronia TURNER maried Benjamin F. KINNEY) to the Georgia DAR, copies of which are in the Georgia Department of Archives and History. It was very possible that Mrs. WELLS had known and most likely talked to her grandmother, since the name |!/\EPEB had to derive from some source, and further that she must have been aware of her lineage. With this in mind, an attempt has been made to locate any private genealogical papers she may have left. A search of the Social Security Death Benefits Record CD tumed up the name of Guy WELLS, and the Georgia Death Certificate lndex gave the precise date and county of his death, which led to a 1965 Atlanta newspaper containing lvlr. WELLS' obituary, which revealed that ilrs. WELLS was still living in '1965, with a son living in Cobb Co., and a manied daughter living in Colorado. The two children ortheir descendants may know what happened to iilrs. WELLS'private papers, but after searching for several months these two children have not been located. It is conceivable that Sophronia Elizabeth TURNER may have been the natural child of Elizabeth TURNER and a Mr. HARPER, and that she took the name TURNER. Canoll and Coweta Co. county court records do not contain any reference to such an event nor can any divorce, guardianship, or name change records be found. The 1850 and 1860 Censuses use the IURNER sumame, as well as the Canoll County Maniage Book C'1; and an entry in the '1875 State Census of Canoll County births lists one of her SCOGGINS children and records her maiden name as TURNER, as does one of the KINNEY family Bit'les as mentioned above. The help of Society members or any other knowledgeable party, especially those with HAMMOND, KINNEY, SCOGGINS, SIMS, or WELLS ancestry, would be welcome, either in locating the WELLS descendants or fumishing clues to the identity of Sophronia's maternal grandparents. M F Word "-:,A".,:- , )'.,1 -11THE MCBURNETT FAMILY Submitted by Betty Jo Carroll Parsons 2323 Bryant Ln., Knoxville, TN 37932 Daniel McBumett, a soldier of the American Revolution, was bom about 1755'1761, place of birth unknown. He married Esther Wadsworth, who was the daughter of Thomas Wadsworth, and they remained in the Wilkes, Franklin, and Lincoln County areas until the death of Daniel in 1793. lt was a few years later that the McBurnett family started their slow migration westward and eventually settled in Canoll and Haralson counties, with some members of the family settling in eastern Alabama. James McBurnett, believed to be the oldest son of Daniel and Esther, was bom about 1776. He married Nancy Pate in Lincoln County, Georgia, about 1796. James served in the War of 1812 as a Private in Captain James Meriwethefs Company of Volunteer Riflemen attached to 2nd Regiment of the Georgia Militia. James McBurnett died in Oclober'1813. ln 1820 Nancy lived with hersixyoung sons in Walton County, Georgia. One of those sons, Nicholas McBumett, was my grealgreat grandfather. Nicholas McBumett was bom about 1809. He married Lucinda G. Adams, January 1,1829, in NeMon County, Georgia. By 1840, they, along with his widowed mother, Nancy, were permanently settled in Canoll County, where they remained the rest of their ljves. After his death, Lucinda made her home with her youngest son, Harris Wardlow. lt is believed that she died about 1885. Several members of the lvlcBumett family, Nick McBurnett, W. A. The first chald born to this family, l\rrnnle lndiana Lucinda McBurnet, is the line from whrch many of the Carrolls in Haralson Co. are descended. Jefferson and Sarah Anne McBurnett, along wth their large family, started their migration westward sometime around '1892. lt is not known exactly how long this trip took, but apparently they were settled there around 1895 or 1896. The second daughter, Mary Fannie who manied Oscar Bruce Canoll, stayed in the Haralson Co. area until about 1906, at which time they also moved to Texas. Perhaps in the beginning Iife was not as comfortable in Texas as this young family thought it might be. ln letters written in 1896 by lndiana Langston King to her daughter Sarah Anne, she expresses regret over their crops in Texas "being so sorry..." while Canoll and Heard counties "had the best crops" she had ever seenl Whatever the conditions, Jefferson and Sarah Anne remained in Texas and continued farming, in addition to breeding and selling horses. Jefferson Mccee McBumett died in Sharp, l\rilam Co., Iexas on 15 Apr '1915. Sarah Anne Elizabeth King McBumett died in Robstown, Texas, '15 Apr 1942. JAlvlES IVOSES BLACKBURN CARROLL - MINNIE LUCINDA INDIANA McBURNETT Submitted by Betty Jo Carroll Parsons, 2323 gryant Ln., Knoxville, IN 37932 James Moses Blackbum Canoll, son of Dr. Thomas Marion Canoll and lsabella l\rcAllister, was born in Haralson Co., GA, on 02 Jul 1862. He manied Minnie Anne Lucinda lndiana McBumett, daughter of Jefferson Mccee McBumett and Sarah Anne Elizabeth King, on 06 Jun 1890. She was bom 29 Oct 1871. Mr. and Mrs. Canollwere life-long residents of Haralson Co., residing primarily in the Buncombe and Waco area, until later years when they made their home with their different children. They were a farming family, and he, at one time, was a saw miller. As early members of the Union Methodist Church, they could always be found at camp meeting during the fourth week of August each year. The cottages, or tents as they were called, were primitive with beds consisting of only wooden frames filled with fresh straw, and no floors. Drinking water, cold and refreshing, was drawn from the spring. ltis stated in llF- Histoty of Union Camp Ground, 1876-1976, that 52 people slept in the Canoll tent over one camp meeting weekend. I was probably one of them. Grandpa Canoll was ahead of his time in regard to the presenlday fitness qaze. A6 a 78 year-old, he was known to have roofed a garage, and in his late eighties and early oineties he walked at least two or three miles a day. Grandma Canoll was bom Minnie lndiana Lucinda McBumett, but was always known as "Minnie Lee." No one seems to know when or why she decided to call herself Minnje Lee, as was recorded on her maniage license and inscribed on her tombstone. One explanation was given in this manner: She was of such an independent nature that when she decided to do something, she just did it. Perhaps one thing the grandchildren will never forget about her was her love of hot green peppers. The ones that tasted the best were those that no one else would dare bite into! Among other things, I remember her as a patient grandmotherwho taught a little girl the fine attributes of hemming a garment. Ten children were bom to this family: 1. EUCLEOD MCALLISTER CARROLL - OLLIE MELVINA WARREN Submitted by Betty Jo Carroll Parsons and Stanley Neal Carroll Eucleod McAllister Carroll. son of James Moses Blackburn Carroll and Minnie lndiana Lucinda ldcBurnett, was bom 23 June 1893, in Waco, Haralson Co., GA. On 13 Jan 1918 he marned Ollie Meivina Warren, who was the daughter of William Gabriel Warren and Drewry [4elvina Silvey both of CarrollCo. The young lvl,. Carrollfrom the Buncombe area, and the young Miss Warren from the lndian Creek area near Bowdon, lirst met at a Union Camp Ground meeting one Sunday afternoon. Cur father did not relate to us if he felt love at first sight, but he did admit to taking immediate steps to make the acquaintance of the pretty young lady. Thereafter, he made frequent visits to the Warren home on Sunday afternoons, driving his buggy and white horse. During the next 18 years there were born eight children to this couple. lnthe course of their Iifetime they would move at least six times, survive a depression, see a war take four sons and then return each of them. ln the later years when the responsibility of rearing a large family was over they continued to be a stronghold, not only to their children and grandchildren, but to parents, brothers and sisters, and friends. Atter the eariy years when they lived in a small house near Grandpa (James l,4oses Blackburn) Carroll in Buncombe, they moved to Newnan, Georgia, where our father worked in the cotton mill repaiflng machines. The next move was backto Haralson Co., this time to Tallapoosa where they remained until about 1934, at which '' - 15_ Eucleod McAllister Carroll & Ollie l\,lelvina Warren, Cont'd. time they moved their large family to an equally large old house situated on the site where the Bremen Recreation Center and tennis courts are now located. Two or three years later, within sight of the public school and the future Methodist Church, they built what was to become their permanent home at 329 Georcia Ave. They resided there for the remainder of their lives, with the influence of school and church etched deeply into each ot iheir children Our father was an automobile mechanic by trade. Sometimes it was hard to tell his vocation from his avocation Two other things he enjoyed throughout his long life were baseball and hunting. Our mother was primanly a homemaker. She worked at Hubbard Pants Company during World War ll, and then again at the Bremen school cafeteria in the early 1960s. She surely is well remembered for the beautiful irises which she grew. Each child canies his or her own memones, but probably none are more poignant than opening day of baseball season or the beginning of a World Series, the cool crisp days of fall when the woods seem to be calling the hunters, or an early moming spring walk through the dew-laden iris garden. Barrow and ComoanY "B" of Cobb's Leoion, laboriously researched and compiled by Hugh W. Barrow, is an accounting of Private Barrow (the authofs great grandfather) and Cobb's Legion Company "B" from its formation through the duration of the Civil War. ln the preface, ihe author states that, "The purpose of this book is ngt to write lt is the story of Company "8" of Cobb's Georgia another history of the Civil War Legion - lnfantry- itself." lnstead of a regiment, Thomas Reade Rootes Cobb chose to form a "Legion" in Support of the South. That type of military organization dates back in history to the Roman Republic and represented a light infantry force backed by its own cavalry and artillery. General Thomas R. R. Cobb was later killled at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Cobb's Legion, for the most part, was made up of volunteers from this western central section of Georgia and the majority of them (for Company "8" approximately 100 men) were residents of Bowdon. On July 27 , 1861 , Company "B" boarded a train for lvlarietta after marching to Newnan. This 3oo-page book is a day-by-day campsite-by-battlefield account of the whereabouts and activities of these Bowdon men for the full four long years of the Civil War. Cobb's Legion usually attached to Lee's Army of Nodhem Virginia, fought in many of the major battles from Kentucky through Tennessee, Virginia. West Virginia, --. Book Review. Contd. and Pennsylvania in the hells of Gettysburg, Crampton's Gap, the Wilderness, Chancellorsville, and many others At Cramptob's Gap, Maryland, probably no other unit, North or South, suffered any higher percentage killed wounded, and missrng rn action in a single battle than Cobb's Legion did there. Their final "Fall out" was at Appomattox Court House which followed their being entrenched at the siege of Petersburg. Hugh Barrow has chronically recorded the movements of Company "B" from July 1861 with the use of many forms of data. lncluded is a listing of the neariy sixty battles in which they v,/ere engaged; numerous, detailed, easily-understood maps: copies of otficial military reports of battles, troop movements, orders; biographical information on all officers (Lee on down, Georgian or non-Georgian) and 139 of the original 145 volunteers; rosters of the enlistments, those killed or wounded in various battles; excerpts from letters and diaries; and informative nanation. lruch day-by-day detail is given that is not found in many other sources -- a treasure for anyone with Civil War interests. The most famous member of Cobb's Legion was l\.4ajor Ashley Wilkes of GqlC With the Wind. Copies of the book, e8!!U\\ll_E19tloQEEqLre.lQN, may be purchased from the Bowdon Historical Society by sending a check for $30.00 to P. O. Box 516, Bowdon, GA30108, in GareofMrs. John Barr. lt will be shipped post-paid. The quantity is limited. On Tuesday, April 8, lvlr. GA. by Nancy Williams Gilmer 701 Wind Grove Rd., lrlarietta, GA 30067 It is a practice in the Primitive Baptist Church to appoint a committee to create an obituary for members who have died. Concord Church seems to have been very consistent in the practice. This church is one of the early churches in the County, being established in 1834. Om October '14, 1884, the church clerk's house burned. He lost all of his possessions along with the minute books and all other records of the church. The existing minute books begin about this time and are on micofilm at the Georgia Archives. The obituaries abstracted here are from the two oldest minute books. BRUMBELOW, HANEY, VINCENT, I am looking for any information your Society may have on the BRUMBELOW family. l\ry grandfather and grandmother, Charlie L. and Opal HANEY BRUMBELOW, lived in the old BRUMBELOW house on Stewart Street prior to moving to the cotton mill manage/s home my Uncle Forrest bought for them located across the street from the West Georgia College. lry mother, Janelle BRUMBELOW VINCENT, lived in the house on Stewart Street for several years. She was the youngest of all the children. My mother told me the BRUITBELOW house had log walls in it and is no longer on Stewart Street. The house my grandparents last lived in, across the street from West Georgia College, is ngw a picnic area for college students. This is the house we visited my grandmother in for so many years Matter of fact, I remember that was where I saw my grandfather before he died in 1968. My Uncle Fonest was a test pilot and was killed in WWll during a test flight. His Will provided money to pay for the house and upkeep as long as Grandpa and/or Grandma were alive. OnMay28, 1983, my grandmother died and Forrest's widow sold the property to the West Georgia College. We visit there every year when we come down to see our other relatives in Carollton. I have many fond memories of this place; however, I do not remember visiting the house on Stewart Street. lvlom said she lived there for a little while before moving into the house across from the College. She said there was a book published by the Carroll County Historical Society that mentioned the old house on Stewart Street, and may even had pictures of it. I am working the BRUMBELOW geneaology and would iove to get a copy of this book for my children's children etc. I would appreciate receiving information on how to purchase the book or any other information pertaining to the BRUMBELOW family. I have visited your home page on the lntemet. Great iob!!l Jill Vincent McDonald, 3602 Hummingbird, Alvin, TX 77511 MCDANIEL, MCDONALD.
