2015 Student Ministry Fall Retreat
WHAT WE BELIEVE AND PROCLAIM Here is a brief summary of core doctrinal beliefs and values that we teach and proclaim at Salem: •• We believe in the one and only living and true God. The eternal God reveals Himself to us as Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit, with distinct personal attributes, yet one in nature and purpose. •• We believe that Jesus is the eternal Son of God. In His incarnation as Jesus He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Jesus was tempted in every way as we are, yet was without sin. Through his death on the cross He made provision for the redemption of humanity from sin. He was raised from the dead with a glorified body and appeared to His disciples as the person who was with them before His crucifixion. He ascended into heaven and is now at the right hand of God where He is the One Mediator, and through Him all humanity has the opportunity to know God, to approach God, and become a part of God’s “family” by faith. •• We believe the Bible was written by persons divinely inspired, and it is the record of God’s revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. •• We believe that mankind was created by the act of God and in the image of God. Yet sin has separated us all from God, and we have no hope for eternal life without the death of Jesus on the cross for our sins. •• We believe that salvation is the free gift of God offered to all who accept Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord by faith, and that God has put Jesus Christ forward as the one and only way to enter into God’s family. •• We believe the New Testament Church is a local body of believers who have come together by believer’s baptism for the purpose of promoting the good news of Jesus around the world through worship, evangelism, ministry, fellowship, and discipleship. •• Our church recognizes two ordinances, meaning religious acts done for their deep symbolic meaning, which are believer’s baptism by immersion, and the Lord’s Supper, sometimes called communion. •• Our church believes in the promise of Christ that He will return, and that the nature and timing of this is known only in the heart of God, so our duty is to be prepared and to diligently spread the good news of the love and forgiveness of God. More detailed exploration and explanation of Christian beliefs can be experienced in Salem’s New Member Course called Seedbed. HOW TO JOIN SALEM BAPTIST CHURCH Salem is a fellowship of believers in Jesus Christ who have been baptized by immersion based on their profession of faith in Christ. Salem asks that those seeking membership complete Seedbed, a new members course, which is offered frequently and at a variety of times and formats throughout the year. An age-appropriate version of Seedbed is also offered for children and youth coming into fellowship. To locate a Seedbed course to fit your schedule, you may contact the church office at [email protected] or 919-362-7327. Salem is such a wonderful church family, and my family was grateful to be back from vacation and worshiping together with you. We had well over a dozen guest families with us in our worship services. Salem family, keep inviting your friends and neighbors! They need the love and joy of a church like Salem! I want to thank the 175th Anniversary team for putting together the Tailgate event last weekend. I parked next to Mary Lou just hoping to stumble into some of that great Booth food! I will be sending a little note out to the church family about the upcoming training event for Go Make Disciples. In the meantime I think I should repeat that bit of information that I wrote here last week in case you missed it... On Friday evening September 25, at 6:30 pm and Saturday morning September 26 at 9 am we will have a time of intensive “Go Make Disciples” training. How does a church get busy in producing “reproducible” disciples? Come and find out! I am praying that we get 60–80 folks at this training event, and out of the event we see a true movement of God’s Spirit as little “missional communities” begin to spring up all over Apex, Cary, Morrisville, Holly Springs and beyond! By taking this simple step one, we are inviting God to do what He desires in our fellowship. Today I am talking about two blind guys who heard Jesus was passing by so they got busy crying out for hope and help. While it seemed to annoy everyone else, it definitely caught Jesus’ attention. What a reminder that the best ministry is often found in the busy annoyances and dusty corners of our lives. How often do we miss what God is doing because of it? Thank you, Salem, for all you do for the Kingdom here at Salem and beyond… Your Pastor, J Beckett Read Dr. Beckett’s blog and download sermon podcasts: www.salem-bc.org/sermon-podcasts www.salem-bc.org/cross-culture Salem is hosting a Cross Culture Fellowship every Sunday evening from 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm in Room D136 beginning SEPTEMBER 13.
