PAGE SIX FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT Youth Ministry/LIFE TEEN LIFE Nights are meetings that immediately follow the Youth Mass on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:45 PM and take place in the parish hall and are an integral part of a comprehensive youth ministry experience. Teens in preparation for confirmation are expected to attend all nights. Focus for Life Nights include: Prayer & Worship, Community Building (Social), and Pastoral Care/Issue Nights. Our Confirmation preparation sessions are more weighted on the catechetical component of youth ministry, but many components overlap the various meetings. Semester Schedule The Nights for the remainder of the year all follow a theme. The theme of this semester is: Vocation. Often when teenagers and adults hear “vocations,” they think, “All they are going to talk about is becoming a priest.” Yes, priesthood is one particular vocation, but we are taking an approach to the semester in a much broader sense. The dates, titles and topics for the entire semester are: March 30: “A House Divided” – Divorce April 13: “True Life” – The Vocations of Holy Orders and Religious Life May 4: “XLT” – Music, Praise & Worship, Talk, Adoration May 18: “Bound Together” – Discernment and Community May 25: “Linus Got Talent” – Annual Talent Show Rite of Confirmation Bishop Sartoris will be joining us on Wednesday, May 7 to celebrate the Rite of Confirmation. Candidates & sponsors are asked to attend the rehearsal that will start promptly at 3 PM in the Church on Sunday, May 4. A MASS WITH A HEALING SERVICE PLACE: DATE: TIME: Celebrant: St. Linus Catholic Church Monday, April 21, 2014 7:30 PM Fr. Thomas Asia Fr. Thomas Asia is an associate pastor at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Canoga Park. Planning a career as a journalist, he attended and graduated from the De La Salle College with a degree of AB Philosophy. However, the Lord has placed the priestly vocation in his heart and responding to the call of the Holy Spirit to enter the priesthood, much to the resentment of his mother who longed for him to become a doctor, Fr. Thomas then entered the Marian Missionaries of the Holy Cross (MMHC) Missionary. He later pursued a Masters in Theology at the University of Santo Thomas and was ordained a priest in December 1998. His assignments included being a formatter for young seminarians, as well as acting as the assistant novice director for MMHC’s house in Bacolod. Father Thomas also was a cathechist and had a prison ministry where he counseled incarcerated people find hope and healing through embracing the Father’s loving mercy and forgiveness. His previous assignments in the US included St. Philomena Church and Holy Family Churches. Father continues to find his priestly role as demanding and inspiring as he continues to evangelize in the Lord’s vineyard. Come and bring your family and friends and receiving the healing gifts of the Holy Spirit. PAGE EIGHT FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT The Office of Life, Justice and Peace invites the faithful of Los Angeles to celebrate the memory and legacy of Cesar Chavez at the annual Mass in his honor on Sunday, April 6, 12:30 p.m., at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Archbishop José H. Gomez has recommended the Beatitudes this Lent as a path for Christian Life, pointing to the examples of saints as well as leaders such as Cesar Chavez, the son of immigrants who grew up to become a great civil rights leader who fought for justice and peace for farm workers and for the Latino community in our country. In his homily at the March 16 closing Mass at the 2014 Religious Education Congress, Archbishop Gomez said, “Cesar Chavez was a man of prayer and man of peace. Learning about his life tells me that he had a deep devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe and that he tried to live the Beatitudes in his daily life. He fought for justice for his people — using the spiritual weapons of prayer, fasting, and self-sacrifice; and he always urged non-violence. I’ve been also thinking a lot about Cesar Chavez these days, as we continue to struggle for immigration reform. To me, justice for immigrants is one of the great human rights issues of our time.” Para mí, justicia para los inmigrantes es uno de los Let us come together in prayer on April 6 to remember más importantes temas de derechos humanos de nuesa great leader and a humble man of faith, conviction, tro tiempo”. sacrifice and hope. SEDER MEAL Passover is the great Jewish feast of redemption and liberation, the memorial of the Israelites' deliverance from their bondage in Egypt. The word Passover means "deliverance," since in the story of the Exodus Yahweh "passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt" (Ex. 12:27). Passover is a festival of great rejoicing, which reveals how God "led us from captivity to freedom, from sadness to joy, from mourning to feasting, from servitude to redemption, from darkness to brilliant light." The ritual meal which commemorates the events of the Exodus is called the Seder. In the Christian tradition the Passover Seder is also believed to be when Jesus instituted the Eucharist. Gathered around the supper table with his disciples for the last time before his crucifixion and death, Jesus told them, "I have longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; because, I tell you, I shall not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” St. Paul of the Cross Church, 14020 Foster Road, La Mirada, will celebrate their yearly Seder Meal on Tuesday, April 15th, at 7:00 PM in the Gannon Hall (doors open at 6:30 PM). The parish has graciously invited us to take part in this celebration. The cost is $10.00, children under 12 years $5.00 (a simple dinner is included and if you like to bring a side dish or dessert, that will be much appreciated). Tickets are available at their parish office before April 15th. You may call Jane Rolfes for more information: 562-944-2000.
