Greenville Tech Foundation
2010-2011 Annual Report
Thank You to Our Supporters
We are pleased to share with you a report of the results
of our 2010-2011 fiscal year. We could not have
achieved these results without you, and we are grateful
for your support.
During the year, we had many successes:
• Our Annual Fund campaign set a record with more than $1.5 million in new cash and pledges received.
• We received more than $200,000 of “in kind” gifts.
• Our employee campaign set a record with more than $64,000 raised.
• Our Entrepreneurs Forum gala had the largest crowd
and raised the most money in its 12-year history.
• We received a significant bequest from the estates of
Raymond and Jane Mattson and have created a
permanently endowed fund in their names. Ray was
very dedicated to the College, serving on the
Greenville Tech Area Commission for 33 years.
We did well but our challenges persist. Though our country
is slowly recovering from the Great Recession, we all wish
the recovery could be faster. Greenville Technical College is
speeding the recovery in the Upstate by preparing more
than 14,000 students in our curriculum division and more
than 23,000 students in our corporate and career
development division for the workforce.
We have students that graduated at the top of their high
school class who have chosen to do the first two years of
their college work here in our Honors College before
transferring to Clemson, USC-Upstate, Furman, USC, or
other four-year institutions. We have students who
dropped out of high school but got their GED and now are
pursuing a two-year Associate Degree. We have students
who have jobs but are taking classes to improve job skills,
students who are taking classes to be able to change jobs,
and unemployed individuals who are here to gain skills to
obtain employment once again.
Our students cover a broader spectrum of society than the
students of almost all colleges in America. We are proud
that our country’s technical and community colleges have
been called “Democracy’s Colleges.” We are grateful to you for helping provide the resources to
educate these individuals. We continue to need funds for
scholarships and the most up-to-date equipment and
technology for our students. We hope we can count on
your support.
On behalf of our students , faculty and staff, thank you for
all you have done and will do to make the Upstate an even
better place to live, work and play.
With thanks,
Keith Miller, Ph.D., President
Robert E. Howard, President
James C. Morton, Chairman

Greenville Tech Foundation Board
The Foundation
Established in 1973, the Greenville Tech Foundation
provides financial support to Greenville Technical
College and its students beyond that which can
be obtained from state and local funding sources.
The Foundation acquires its funding through
charitable contributions from businesses,
foundations, individuals and earnings from its
permanent endowment.
The Foundation also owns or manages certain real
estate on behalf of the college. For example:
w
The Foundation owns and manages a large
portion of McAlister Square, where its offices are
located. The space the Foundation owns is leased
to some of the universities occupying the
University Center, county agencies, non-profit
groups and commercial enterprises. Space owned
by the Foundation is 96 percent leased.
The Foundation is an exempt organization under the
Internal Revenue Code’s section 501(c)(3) and is
classified as a foundation under section 509(a)(3) of
the Code. It is governed by a board of directors
comprised of community members including leaders
in business and the professions.
w
The Foundation leased land on the Barton
Campus from the college, issued tax-exempt
bonds and constructed 438 housing units in four
buildings along with a housing office/activities
building. This student housing project, now in its
sixth year, allows more than 430 students to be
members of a living/learning community while
they further their education. Many of these
students would have been unable to attend
Greenville Tech had the Foundation not been able
to offer housing.
Tax-deductible contributions can be made by cash,
real estate, personal property, securities, bequests,
or by naming the Foundation as beneficiary of
insurance policies, trusts or retirement accounts
including IRAs. Gifts can be designated or
unrestricted, and may be made on a one-time
basis or spread over several years.
w
During the summer of 2008, the Foundation
issued tax-exempt bonds to finance the
construction of a new classroom building on the
Brashier Campus in Simpsonville. This building
was completed in August 2009 and leased to
Greenville Tech and Brashier Middle College
Charter High School, with lease payments in an
amount to allow for repayment of the bonds.
Ninety percent of all designated gifts to the
Foundation will be applied to uses specified by
the donor. Consistent with the practices of many
non-profits, ten percent will be used to defray
administrative costs.
The Foundation manages over 100 endowed funds.
The Foundation invests the funds in accordance with
the investment policies and practices as established
by the Foundation Board of Directors. Up to five
percent of the earnings are spent on uses specified
by the donor such as scholarships, educational/
lab equipment, faculty/staff development, and
capital needs.
The Greenville Tech Foundation has played a critical
role in the growth of Greenville Technical College and
has exciting plans to increase its support of the college
in the coming years.
Thank you for selecting me to receive the Ralph and Virginia Hendricks Foundation Scholarship.
This scholarship will be a great help to my success in completing my associates degree in
computer graphics at Greenville Technical College. I plan to work hard and use the scholarship
to help with my purchasing books and materials I need for my classes. Thank you again.

Upstate Entrepreneurs Honored
The Entrepreneurs Forum recognizes individuals
who have contributed to the prosperity of upstate
South Carolina through their entrepreneurial activities,
business leadership, and involvement in the community.
In September 2010, four Upstate entrepreneurs were
inducted during the Entrepreneurs Forum Gala at the
Carolina First Center. The individuals honored were
Jim Benson of Benson Automotive Group, Rick Erwin
of Rick Erwin Dining Group, Henry Harrison of
American Services Inc. and Ralph Hendricks of
Hendricks Properties Inc.
In September 2011, four additional entrepreneurs were
inducted during the Entrepreneurs Forum Gala at the TD
Convention Center. The individuals honored were
William Brown of Family Legacy, Ed Good of Hampton
Development Company, Richard Heusel of KM Fabrics,
Inc., and Surendra Jain of Jain Chem, LTD.
Bob Howard (center) with 2011 inductees: Ed Good,
Richard Heusel, Surendra Jain, and William Brown.
The Greenville Tech Foundation has honored 82 Upstate
entrepreneurs since beginning its Annual Entrepreneurs
Forum in 1999. The Foundation appreciates the support
these individuals have given.
2010 Outstanding Philanthropist Award
Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP)
Arthur R. “Dick” Graham received an Outstanding
Philanthropist Award at the National Philanthropy Day
luncheon at the Poinsett Club in November 2010. After
twenty two years of successful leadership, Dick retired
as executive director of the Greenville-Spartanburg
Airport in 1989. That same year, he became chairman
of the advisory board of the Greer Campus of Greenville
Technical College, and became chairman emeritus in
2004. In the summer of 2004, Dick’s wife of 63 years,
Mary M. Graham, passed away. In honor of Mary, Dick

establish the Mary M. Graham Endowed Book Fund.
The income from the endowment is used to assist
students in the purchase of textbooks for courses at the
Greer Campus because many students cannot afford to
purchase their textbooks. Dick has a big understanding
of what it takes to receive an education that prepares
a person to become a successful, productive,
contributing citizen, and the role each of us can play in
making that happen.

Roy Christopher “Chris” Junkins graduated from Greenville Tech’s Physical
Therapist Assistant Program in 1976. He also obtained his BS in Physical Education
from Winthrop University in 1981 and his Masters in Management from Southern
Wesleyan University in 2009. Chris is currently part owner in Dosher Physical
Therapy in Easley, SC. His wife, Martha, also graduated from GTC’s Physical
Therapist Assistant program, and they have two daughters. In honor of his
outstanding clinical skills, the South Carolina Chapter of the American Physical
Therapy Association (SCAPTA) initiated the Chris Junkins Award for Clinical
Excellence in 2001 and named him the first recipient. For numerous years, Chris
has served as an adjunct instructor, a clinical instructor and as a member of the
advisory committee for the PTA Program at Greenville Tech. In 2007, he received
NAPTA’s Outstanding Physical Therapist Assistant of the Year Award. He volunteers for Greater Greenville Wellness,
Special Olympics, March of Dimes, and the Big League World Series. Jeff Smith
2010 Honorary Alumnus of the Year
Jeff Smith serves as chairman of the John I. Smith Charities, which has
contributed $215,000 to the Greenville Tech Foundation since 2004. These
generous gifts have allowed the college to make strides for students through
Achieving the Dream, patient simulators, international education, a lab for the
pharmacy tech program, and facilities and equipment for the nursing/science
program. Smith, son of the late Senator J. Verne and Jean Myers Smith, is a
graduate of Greer High School, Furman University, and the University of South
Carolina School of Law. Though he retired from the practice of law in 2002, he
remains of counsel to Carter, Smith, Merriam, Rogers & Traxler in Greenville. A
Greer resident, Smith is very active in the community. He currently serves as
an elder for First Presbyterian Church of Greer and as vice chair for the Foothills Presbytery Committee on Ministry.
He has also served as a trustee for the Columbia Theological Seminary, director for Bank of Greer, director for
United Carolina Bank of South Carolina, chairman of the Greenville County Democratic Party, and in many other
community capacities. He and his wife, Sallie, have three children and one grandchild.

I am so very grateful to the Greenville Tech Scholarship committee for awarding me the Gerald P.
Rosenberg Scholarship. This will be my second year as a student at Greenville Tech and I am
majoring in Rad Tech. Receiving this scholarship will help me out tremendously. As a student,
one of my biggest worries is how I am going to pay for my tuition. Receiving help like the Gerald
P. Rosenberg Scholarship relieves me of these worries so that I can better focus on my education
and my future goals in life. Thank you again for choosing me as a recipient of the Gerlad P.
Rosenberg Scholarship. Again, I am truly grateful.

In Closing
If you’re like most people in this area, Greenville Tech has touched your life or the life of someone close to you.
Perhaps it was a family member who came to acquire skills that would build a career. Or maybe it was a neighbor
or employee who returned to college for retraining. It could have been someone who attended a seminar or got
the basis for a four-year degree. It could have been someone that graduated from Greenville Tech such as your
dental hygienist, auto mechanic, or the chef in your favorite restaurant.
Greenville Tech has been a part of the fabric of this community since 1962. Together the college and the
Greenville community have grown and diversified, welcoming new businesses and industries, and supporting
existing operations with educational programs that promote success. This partnership has been a catalyst for the
tremendous economic development in our area.
With your support, we can continue to help individuals realize their educational dreams, meet the training needs of
area companies, and help to attract new industry by supporting training requirements. Our future growth and the
community’s growth depend on people like you. Your investment in our community’s education and economic
development is appreciated.
