Antique motorcycling has lost one of its greatest practitioners today, October 19,
2013. I have met many people in my life so far, some fly in as light as a butterfly and
fly away in a very short span of time, some ride into your life and ride beside you
forever. Gene and I hit it off like we were old army buddies meeting after not seeing
each other for decades, I just felt like I knew him forever the first time we met and
even though I was new to the antique motorcycle world he treated me like I was an
old pro. I only got to go to 3 AMCA National Chapter Meets and he was always there,
2 Sunshine Chapter Meets 1 in Eustis, 1 in Daytona and 1 Blackhawk Chapter Meet in
Davenport, Iowa where Gene, JoAnn and myself got to spend the whole day together
riding around in the golf cart stopping at every vendor to gaze at all the treasures of
days gone by, and even though we had a heavy wind storm and a gully washer rain
storm, it one of my favorite days ever. Well the now he’s in motorcycle heaven where
it never rains, your bike never breaks down, you never need gas or oil, your bike
always starts on the first kick and you never get bugs stuck in your teeth. When we
are together again he’ll know all the good roads to ride and he will always have a ride
mapped out. So this isn’t goodbye, this is see you later, but I’ll sure miss him until we
ride again.

FLORIDA’S OLDEST & LARGEST VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE ORGANIZATION
RIH 2013: The World of Competition Motorcycles
Riding into History™ (RIH) is a world class Vintage Motorcycle Concours d’Elegance. Since its inception, Riding Into History
has been held at the World Golf Village near St. Augustine, Florida. It has received widespread coverage and
articles have been written about it all over the world. It was also nationally featured on the Speed Channel. This
competition attracts between 300 and 400 antique and vintage motorcycles each year. Collectors from all over
America bring their motorcycles to the show, and they are displayed around the lake which forms the centerpiece
of the World Golf Village. There are numer- ous exhibitors at the Concours, as well as representatives from
several motorcycle clubs. RIH is a 501 (c)3 organization that has contributed over $250,000 to charities. Our
chosen charity for 2013 is The Wounded Warrior Project. RIH has no paid staff, and all duties are performed by
volunteers.
Got back Sunday from another wonderful weekend in St Augustine, FL. The RIH show is held at the
World Golf Resort. A brick roadway circles a lake and it is lined with the most beautiful bikes. Very laid back, no
vending, just look and talk. Go to the site and view the 2011 photos. (2012 is mostly of the Sunday ride) be sure to
click Don Bradley and view his made for RIH posters, real collector pieces. We spend the weekend and visit the old
city, 5 miles away. It's America's oldest city (450 years and a lot of history). A great relaxing time. Try it, you'll like it.

WHAT GOOD IS AN OLD MOTORCYCLE?
By Clare Frost
I have never had to worry about my husband going out on me. You know why? OLD
MOTORCYCLES!!!!
Yes….if your better half has an old bike: he is stuck in the garage. Do yourself a favor. Find out what bike he had
in high school and buy him a really shitty one on Ebay. Not only will he be in the garage forever…he will be stuck
on the internet trying to find parts for it!

member of the Sunshine AMCA vintage motorcycle club. And at this time headed for his third championship spending the last two weekends in California accumulating those precious points.
This is a photo of two members of the sunshine motorcycle club and as of last year these three men
share five championships in the hand shift vintage class. Ralph is in the center and Doc is on the
right # 35. He is also a two-time champ and member of the sunshine motorcycle club, out of New
Smyrna Beach. And Davy of MA is #173. If they're not racing their motorcycles, you can have breakfast with them at the famous Cabbage Patch in New Smyrna Beach Sunday morning around nine
o'clock . Go Vintage.

2013 AMCA WINTER NATIONAL MEET
The weather cooperated! Our Meet was a resounding success: over 220 vendors, excellent food service, lots of parts bought and sold, good friends and good times. And NO rain. Did I mention ‘No
rain?’ That fact is worth repeating. We had Mr. Metalflake Herb and Clare & Clive Taylor running
the field games, our traditional Saturday night banquet with nice door prizes, a meeting held by the
National Board for all AMCA members and the much anticipated outdoor Sunday morning judging.
For the memories, here are some photos.

Ike’s Rabbi comes through again and Billy Joel comes back
Photos and story by Clare Frost Taylor
“We need a bigger boat!” is what Sheriff Brody said in the movie “Jaws” when he saw how big
the shark was. Well our shark was huge. An estimated crowd of 13,000 viewed the 286 registered
bikes on the field, and some said there was another show in the parking lot. Our little Frost Park
was FULL.
Ike brought his 1964 Matchless, the only Matchless, but most important, he brought the best
weather ever. So good, Billy Joel rode in on his Ducati to make a second appearance and sang with
our band. Our theme this year was “Competition” and we had some nice stuff. The highlight was
the four Cannonball bikes that competed in the race from New York to San Francisco last September, two BMW’s and two Indians. And there was the unusual stuff: 1912 Abingdon King Dick,
Elstar Ice Racer from the late 60’s, a 52 Duerkopp M-150, 1962 Wards Riverside Benelli, a 1950
Imme R100 that won Most Unique, 1922 Gillet 350, a NSU Lux, 5 Jawas, and a Ford Flathead Motorcycle in the Bobber/Chopper
class.
In the English arena, there were 2 Ariel Square Fours, a 1956 and a 1957, a 1947 AJS along with 23 Triumphs, 9 Nortons, 7
BSA’s and a 69 Royal Enfield. A 1942 Phillips won a special interest award.
Along with these great motorcycles, there was an old bicycle display; the Harley Team
did shows, field games, a swap meet that gets bigger and bigger by the year, vendors and
the roller derby girls who are always a hoot.
So once again, Ike came through so
we gave him a “Weather Master”
award for his great work! The list of
winners can be seen at:

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK
I want to thank all the hardworking volunteers that made our 2013 Winter National meet at Silver Sands a great success. We
made the necessary changes for the problems that came up last year and it seems to have all worked out. We have been accepted by the facility to hold the 2014 meet there and we will be fine tuning the other changes that need to be made.
The field games were well attended, the food vendors did a great job, the banquet was good and JoAnn loved her plaque given
by the club in recognition of all the years she worked as meet coordinator. I especially want to thank Carl Sorenson for all he
did and know that he’ll do a great job again in 2014 when he is the meet coordinator.
I am sorry I couldn’t attend the April ride and meeting, but I had family matters to attend to. I heard it was a good day. Hope
to see everyone next month at Riding Into History.

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT OLD BIKE(ER)S
I was a teenager when I started hanging around bike shops, trying to decide what I liked and could afford. The first bike I bought
was a 1965 650 BSA, all shiny chrome and pretty quick. It was a lot of fun but back then I was pretty much a Harley girl so the
search was still on. A ‘52 panhead came next, nice scoot but a lot of kicking for a small woman. Then it was swap meet city for
about a year till I found the rest of the pieces for a ‘72 XLCH mill that a friend had put together for me, followed by a long, cold
winter in the garage, and my mom telling me it was “time to give this thing up, you have a baby now.” Well, that made sense because our family didn’t know anyone that rode...except for me. That bike is one I still have, and will give to my daughter when the
time is right. There’s been a couple of others I’ve loved and lost, and now I’m liking a 1966 BMW/2; with my bad back there’s
just something about a sewing machine…but a ‘47 Knuckle is my dream; of course a sweet little 30:50 Scout would be just fine
too...
I first became aware of the AMCA several years ago and try to be an active participant in the Sunshine Chapter. It’s fun to meet
and ride and spend time with like-minded people, and I have made lots of friends. About 2 years ago I saw a note in the National
Magazine talking about an oral history project that Editor Bill Wood wanted to start, to record members’ stories about their love
affairs with old iron.
At the Sunshine Meet this year I met with Bill and
Earl Levine and we came up with a plan to get this
started, hoping that someone would be our ‘test
subject’. My friend, Gene Bevilaqua, was kind
enough to sit down with us and share his tale.
This is unedited, the project is just getting started,
and we hope to do more of these with other folks
that want to share their stories. This link will take
you the AMCA website, then just click there on
the photo of Gene.

PS. Who’s next? Share your story too!
Here is a peek at Burt’s bikes.
This hobby has kept him entertained
and out of bars for years. At 80 he
still stops along the way to check a
“for sale” sign on a bike.

IN MEMORIUM
BOB REKO
It’s been many years since Bob and I got together with John
Bowman, Bill Hancock, and many others who were already in
the AMCA Florida Chapter. We were all friends with a common interest from day one until almost 20 years later.
We had many “ups and downs” and many arguments as to
how to make a better club of what we had. With the loyal
membership that we had, it was not a difficult task and it took
a lot of work to put things together so that the majority were
satisfied. I don’t know if we ever reached that goal, but maybe the sunshine chapter survival
proves the point.
Bob and Marcy, along with many of us helped to make this the organization that it is today. I
have missed my involvement ever since I left Florida and, more important I have missed the friendships and fellowship I
made through the Florida Chapter.
I have lifelong friends in Gene and Joanne, Bill Hancock, Dave Clemons, the Damiano family, Sylvia Bowman, and too
many others to mention all of the people that helped form my appreciation of antique motorcycles.
As it is with John Bowman, I will miss Bob even though it has been in pleasant thoughts over the past few years. Our
memories of the Indian experimental 841 adventure will stay with me for the rest of my life. We had a great time building
our contribution to motorcycle history.
Someone said once that in restoring and keeping our antiques, they will remain on “loan” to us for our lifetime and then
pass on to other lovers of the old bikes. It’s guys like Reko, Bowman, and Hancock who lived these dreams.
I’m honored to have known all of these guys and all of the members of the Florida Chapter.
None of us will ever forget your contributions to our hobby and the fellowship it generated.
Jerry Deutscher
Past President Sunshine Chapter AMCA
JIM DINGESS
I met Susan and Jim Dingess back in 1995 when I came to the first Sunshine Chapter ride in St Augustine that I attended. I had to meet all these new people who all knew Gene for a long time and he was introducing me to a club who
already knew his ex wife and here I was. Well, I was accepted by all and became very close friends with many, among
them Jim and Susan. Jim was well known in antique restoration circles, completeing many beautiful bikes. My earliest
memory was watching Susan ride behind Jim on the back of a bike with her sitting on a pillow on the fender.
Over the years, Jim became a Trustee of the Club and when we started having our meets in Eustis, he was the man who
put all the vendors in a spot. He set up all the vendor spaces for Eustis that first year and was what we used for all the
16 years we were there. Around the second or third year, I started coming over and watched over
Susan's shoulder as she took care of the vendors. The next thing I knew, I was sitting next to her taking money while
she took care of the guys. We did this with Jim overseeing the operation while he was vending at his usual spot. Everyone know where Jim was, taking care of business. He was this big, tall guy from West Virginia who
everyone knew and loved. After a few years, Jim developed some health problems and decided he couldn't quite do the
job anymore and passed the torch to me as the vendor coordinator and the rest is history. Jim continued to be around in
case of any problems. He taught me that the vendors were our friends and that their needs were what made our meet
so successful. I tried to emulate his caring and rules and know that without him the Sunshine Chapter would have been
a lot less successful.
Jim was also the person who started out the Okeechoobee rides in November every year. We started out meeting in a
campground, then graduated to the Flamingo Motel parking lot, and now we have moved to the Travelodge. Jim was
also instrumental in meeting Mr. & Mrs. Swindel who own the farm we visit every year on our Okeechoobee ride.
I couldn't believe my ears when Joe Gimpel called me the other day to tell me of his passing. I immediately called Susan
who told me what happened and that his wishes were for no services and for him to be cremated and for his ashes to be
spread on the Blue Ridge Parkway at a later time.
The Sunshine Chapter will not be the same without our friend Jim.
Everybody wins at Daytona 2013
Apparently, Daytona International Speedway donated a bunch of tickets to the VIP suites for the Daytona
200 race to the Volusia County Special Olympics. Ralph and Amy Wessel tirelessly 'peddled' these tickets during Bike Week and during our National Meet. Thank you to all our AMCA members who bought tickets and
supported this cause. We had access to the suites with food and drinks as well as the pits, for less than it would
have cost to get into the infield! On top of that, the speedway matched whatever funds were raised through the
sale of these tickets. Everybody made out on this one! Thank you Ralph and Amy!

2OI3 ANNUAL SPRING MEETING
Meeting called to order by Carl Sorenson in lieu of President Joe Gimpel being out of
town. Approval of minutes from last meeting as read by Carl Sorenson with the absence of Ann Martin, Secretary. Minutes accepted and seconded.
Treasurers report given for the first quarter by JoAnn Kreller, Treasurer. She reported a 32% increase of our income. A
detailed report is available to members upon request. We also showed a $2642.00 profit from our National Meet.
Old business: Nancy Pastor, newsletter editor requested articles for our future newsletters. Would like to start a Classified Ad section for members.
New business: The office for Vice President and Secretary are open positions. Anyone with a nomination for either job,
bring it to our next meeting for election.
It was announced that postcards directed to the vendors for our 2014 meet will be sent out in June of this year. There
will be a committee meeting on May 25th for the 2014 meet. Location to be announced.
Members present were advised to check with JoAnn if the correct email address was on file with the club since future
newsletters will be sent out by email. If anyone does not have an email address they must ask for a mailing of the newsletter, contacting either Nancy or JoAnn.
Ralph Wessell spoke to the membership about the Volusia County Special Olympics. A vote will be taken on this topic
in October.
A request was made about a change in the bylaws. Members would like the change for a proxy to vote on matters of
importance since so many members are great distances away from where meetings are held and cannot always attend. Discussion will continue.
Jim Kuhman spoke to the Club about his motorcycle show he had the week before in Melbourne. He suggested that
someone from the AMCA should be available at different meets to bring information
about the Club to people who never heard of the AMCA or Sunshine Chapter. It was discussed that in the future literature would be obtained for distribution if everyone would notify the club prior to any function.
Bike Show Awards were given out to attendees who entered our bike show.
The award for Most Miles was given to Mike Amara with his 1968 FLH HD. The award for Oldest Bike was given to John
Miller for his 1938 Indian Chief. The People’s Choice award was given to Marty Megregian with his 1941 Indian 4.
Meeting was adjoined at 2pm.

SUNSHINE CHAPTER of the AMCA
To: Mr. Steve Penland, Ms. Sherry Fletcher and the staff of the Iron Horse Saloon,
On behalf of the Sunshine members of the AMCA, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all
for the generosity for the events that you sponsored on April 20, 2013.
As you know Mother Nature was not very kind in offering a nice day for riding, however we had 30 plus
members that braved the cold and the rain for the ride and meeting.
We all enjoyed your facility and all of your staff did an outstanding job to insure that everyone was comfortable.
We hope that we can coordinate future events together to promote the antique motorcycle culture in central Florida.
Best Regards,
Carl N. Sorenson

SPRING RIDE: THE LOOP TO FLAGLER BEACH
Thanks to Carl Sorenson for organizing a ride in the country for us. We met at Destination Daytona in Ormond Beach where coffee
and donuts were provided for us by the good people at J&P Cycle Supply. Good raffle prizes and free t shirts too! The ride was
approximately 60 miles long, with us ending at the Iron Horse Saloon and a small bike show. A good lunch was supplied by the
fine folks there, followed by our meeting. With rain imminent, the gathering broke up soon after.
This and the following pages are copies of an old newsletter.

A Tribute to BOB REKO
It’s been many years since Bob and I got together with John Bowman, Bill Hancock, and many others who were
already in the AMCA Florida Chapter. We were all friends with a common interest from day one until almost 20 years
later.
We had many “ups and downs” and many arguments as to how to make a better club of what we had. With the loyal
membership that we had, it was not a difficult task and it took a lot of work to put things together so that the majority
were satisfied. I don’t know if we ever reached that goal, but maybe the sunshine chapter survival proves the point.
Bob and Marcy, along with many of us helped to make this the organization that it is today. I have missed my
involvement ever since I left Florida and, more important I have missed the friendships and fellowship I made through
the Florida Chapter.
