Worthy Brothers, Honor Guests, Ladies and Gentleman,
Welcome to our Annual Columbus Day Dinner Dance. I am honored to be the Grand Knight of this great
council. For those of you visiting or do not know about the Knights, we are the largest fraternal Catholic
organization in the world. Our local council, the Father John Farrell Council # 5962 is the local council of
the five towns and we are proud to call St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Hewlett our home. In
addition to St. Joseph, we are also home to the brothers of St. Joachim RC Church in Cedarhurst, NY.
Tonight, we come together in honor of two beloved people who have served their communities with
dignity, pride and selflessness for many, many years, 80+ in total.
Our religious honoree this year is a nun who has done nothing but humbly serve the Lord through her
various works in the five towns, mostly in Cedarhurst. Her name is Sister Mary Albert, CSJ and she is a
devout Sister of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Brentwood for the past 65+ years. She has done great
things for this community and I am sure many of you remember her as a teacher at St. Joachim
elementary school, where she taught for many years. Her ministry also includes serving the poor, making
house calls and delivering Holy Communion to the sick and homebound. We look forward to her
continuing work the Lord called upon her to carry out over 65 years ago to the people of this great
community. Thank you Sister for all you have done for us and the Catholic community of the five towns!
Our second honoree this evening is our most recent Past Grand Knight, Joseph Lentini. Joseph has
served on many committees throughout his career in the Knights of Columbus, including his most
memorable as director and chairman of all youth events for our council. During his long tenure, Joe
worked his way through the chairs serving as Warden, Chancellor, and Deputy Grand Knight. In 2011,
Joe finally was elected by his brother Knights to the highest and most respected office a Knight can
obtain in the local council, Grand Knight. I am proud to call Joe a Past Grand Knight and I know I can
always count on Joe for his expertise and leadership in the years to come. Thank you Joe, for your
service, we salute you!
I also would like to thank everyone who has come out tonight to show support to these two deserving
individuals. As we reflect on the past year and await the upcoming year let me take this opportunity to
summarize some of the great things this vibrant small council has accomplished. This past year alone we
ran our golf outing which raised over $20,000. The money raised went to various causes including two
local churches, the Long Island Blind Association and prostate cancer research. In conjunction with our
worthy State Deputy, Salvatore Restivo, we participated in the states C&B raffle program where funds
where raised for youth programs, Catholic advocacy and Special Olympics, just to name a few. We also
stuffed Halloween bags for Halloween and ran various youth dances for the young ones. Speaking of the
young ones, we also ran a very successful Easter egg hunt on the lawn of St. Joseph’s for Easter.
Let’s not forget the veterans we supported under the direction of PGK, SK Oliver Giannotti. Under his
leadership, we collected over $4,000.00 in goods and donated those goods to the VA hospital in
Northport for our veterans. Let’s also not forget the money raised and donated to our two seminarians
studying for the priesthood. In addition, we helped collect clothing and furniture for a fire that tore through
apartments on Broadway that left families and children homeless.
Under SK Rob Williams leadership we collected clothing and other items for the victims of Hurricanes that
tore through many states, including Mississippi. Under short notice, this clothing drive collected enough
clothes to fill a 48 foot tractor trailer down to a warehouse in Mississippi where it was divided up and
given out to many different organizations and people in need. Some of these items even went to other
worthy brothers of our order. It is with sincere thanks and appreciation for your generosity and support
that enables us to continue our charitable works such as these.

HISTORY OF THE
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated
by the Vatican, founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882 with a handful
of men in a small church in New Haven, Connecticut. Since that time, the
Knights of Columbus has grown exponentially to become the world’s largest
Catholic men’s fraternal benefit society. Father McGivney’s original vision
for the Order was to provide economic security and stability for the widows
and orphans of deceased members, many of who held low wage jobs and were
persecuted because of their faith. The Order now provides financial assistance
to those needy and less fortunate around the world and has been praised by
Popes, Presidents and other world leaders, for support of the Church, programs
of evangelization and Catholic education, civic involvement and aid to people
of all faiths.
As the Order has grown, its benevolence has increased. The Order continues
to break all of its previous records for charitable contributions and volunteer
service. In the past decade, the Knights of Columbus has raised and donated
over $1.4 billion to numerous charitable causes and volunteered more than 653
million hours of service. Last year alone, the Knights donated more than $154
million and more than 70 million volunteer hours to charitable causes. The
Order also sponsors religious vocations by providing seminarians or postulants
with financial assistance and moral support.
The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to
more than 14,000 councils and 1.8 million members
throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines,
Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama,
the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala,
Guam, Saipan, and Poland.

Honoree Sister Mary Albert, CSJ
Sister Mary Albert Thompson is the seventh child in a family of ten children born to Mary and Albert
Thompson. Her given baptismal name is Irene. Growing up Sister attended St. Francis Xavier elementary
school and then Bishop McDonnell High School. After high school she worked for two years at National
City Bank located on Wall Street before entering religious life on February 2, 1944. Through the Sisters of
St. Joseph she received her religious and professional training.
Sister’s first four years of teaching experience was for the Brooklyn Diocese. In 1955 she came to St.
Joachim R.C. Church where she taught in the school until 1968. For the next six years, she was involved in
Learning Centers. She started a two-year non-graded learning center at Our Lady of Victory R.C. Church
in Floral Park and a learning media center at St. Martha’s R.C. Church in Uniondale. These programs were
for seventh and eighth graders.
Sister Mary was then invited by Father Thomas Reilly and Sister M. Angelita, school principal, to start a
learning center for the first three grades at St. Joachim R.C. Church. She also began to work with Father
Reilly in the parish, visiting the sick and home bound. This was the beginning of Sisters’ second career
and in 1976, Father Reilly asked her to work full time in the parish in Pastoral Care. Sister continued and
extended this work under both Father John McGeever, and the present Pastor, Monsignor Paul F. Rahilly.
Sister considers herself extremely fortunate to have been involved in both ends of the spectrum, teaching
the young and ministering to the elderly and home bound. Sister has also been involved in the R.C.I.A.
Program with Deacon Frank Bono and has been on the Advisory Board of St. John’s Episcopal Hospital for
many years. She is a member of the Mentoring Program at # 2 school and is a member of the Interfaith
Clergy Council of the Five Towns and Peninsula.
After sixty plus years Sister still is very active in the life of the church. Some of the duties that she still
performs on a regular basis are the readings at several masses, assists at wakes and funerals, delivers
Communion to the sick and home bound as well as arrange for home health aides. In addition to these,
she is also a founding member of the “Our Lady of Hope Committee.” One of the many things this
committee provides is Easter and Christmas baskets with a complete dinner and holiday goodies for the
least fortunate and home bound parishioners.
Of her sixty plus years as a Sister of St. Joseph, Sister says they have been busy, happy and grace-filled
ones. Sister is happy to celebrate this milestone in her life. Sister was quoted as saying “Celebration
brings balance and perspective.” She goes on to say “It is an opportunity to thank God for his many gifts,
to thank my religious community as well as my family for their unending support. This is a time to gather
together in a joyful setting with Clergy and friends. These people have truly been the wind beneath my
wings!”

Honoree
Joseph Lentini
Past Grand Knight
Joseph Lentini was born in Woodhaven, NY to Anthony and Irene Lentini. He has an older sister
and brother, Tina and Jack as well as a younger sister Maria. Growing up in the working class
Queens neighborhood provided many activities to keep a young boy busy. His days were busy
with stickball, wiffle ball, box ball, stoop ball, touch football and skully to name a few while
nights were taken up with ringolevio, freeze tag, and charades.
In 1988 Joe met and his beautiful wife Laura and soon after they were married and had two
beautiful girls, Danielle and Nicole. As his daughters grew, Joe volunteered as a coach, and that
began a twenty year career of coaching softball, soccer and basketball for his daughter’s teams.
He also served a few years on the board of the local soccer club.
In 2005, Joe joined the Knights of Columbus and took an active role in the Father John Farrell
Council #5962. As the Youth Committee Leader he organized many events for the youth of his
parish. His first event was a “Kids Christmas Party” which was a great success. He then focused
on other events including annual fall and spring dances and movie nights. These events were all
equally as successful. Since 2007, Joe has had the pleasure of playing Santa Clause at our parish
Christmas party and looks forward each year to seeing the smiling faces of the children as they
chat with Santa about their Christmas wishes.
In 2009 and 2010 he served his council as the “Deputy Grand Knight” and then in 2011 was
honored to be elected to the highest elected officer in the council, “Grand Knight.” Under Joe’s
strong leadership, the Father John Farrell Council continued to flourish and the council
continued its great work in raising money and donating thousands of dollars to our local
parishes and various charities.
Joe is grateful to his brother Knights for the support they have given him over the years in
helping him achieve all of the success he has had as a Knight. Most importantly Joe wants to
thank his family. Without the love and support of his wife Laura and daughters Danielle and
Nicole none of this would have been possible!
