Out Of My Hat
David Garrard, President
Happy New Year!
I hope 2011 is off to a good start for you, and
I hope the year will be a magical one for you and your
family.
Looking back, I would like to say thank you to
Mike Raymer and Roger McCurry who did a fine job
headlining our annual Holiday Banquet. We enjoyed
a nice evening of food and fun at the Kosair Temple.
Ken Abbott made presentations to the winners of our
close up contest. We also made a special presentation
to our good friend and Courier-Journal columnist, Ken
Neuhauser for the many ways he has supported us and
helped promote magic in Louisville.
I want to say thanks again to Pete Miller and
Pat Miller for coordinating several holiday community appearances by club members. These shows build
good will and also bring a few dollars into our coffers.
As such, they contribute to our club’s financial health
while helping promote magic in our city.
Looking ahead, we have Ted Brainerd and
Kozmo Magic here on January 25. We also have former SAM President, Bruce Kalver lined up for April
12. We are working to finalize the return of Michael
Ammar, and hope to have a date for that soon. Pat
Miller’s The Magic and The Wonder show is set for
May 15. Our It’s Magic! fundraiser show is scheduled
for September 16. Please go ahead and put these dates
on your calendar.
Congratulations to Bob Escher on the publication of Del Ray: America’s Foremost! The book is
beautiful and is being well-received by the magic community as evidenced by the fact that it is already in a
second printing! Del Ray had several Louisville connections and performed in our city on a regular basis.
Bob inherited all of Del’s magic and tells me that plans
are in the works for a lecture tour that will showcase
some of the props. We will certainly want to host one
of those lectures ourselves and will be looking for a
date as the year unfolds.
The Magi-Fest will be held January 27-29 in
Columbus. Jep Hostetler and his crew always put on a
great show.
Please remember that this will be the last bulletin we will be mailing. We have determined that we
can save approximately $500 by emailing the bulletin
Page 3
and posting it on our website. That $500 can be better
spent on a lecture or other special function. If you do
not have access to email or a computer, please contact
me or one of the other officers. We will be glad to make
sure you receive a copy of the bulletin by mail.
Please call me or shoot me an email if you have
ideas or suggestions for a lecture or meeting feature.
Let’s work together to make 2011 the best year ever for
the Louisville Magic Club.
David
In Sympathy
The Louisville Magic Club extends sympathy to
the family of Mike Stout who passed away on
December 28 of an apparent heart attack.
Mike owned Candleworx and Magic and was a
good friend to many LMC members. He was 43.
DARSHWOOD THE CONJURER TAKES
FIRST PLACE IN
2010 DR. ROBERT ESCHER CLOSE-UP
AND PARLOR COMPETITION
The 2010 Dr. Robert Escher Close-up and Parlor Competition was a great success. The theme was
“walk-around magic”. Seven adults and two juniors
competed. Over 50 spectators attended. All received a
free DVD donated by KOZMO Magic.
Darshwood the Conjurer, also known as Richard Gessmer, won first place in the senior division
as well as winning the People’s Choice Award. Lion
Fludd won second place, with Steve Hafner and Cody
Clark tieing for third place. Jordan Frizzell won first
place in the junior division with Daniel Kaufer taking
second place.
Each winner received a cash prize and certificate at the Holiday banquet. In addition, handcrafted
magic wands made by Tom Crecelius were awarded
to five of the winners. As a participation prize, Bob
Escher donated a copy of the new Del Ray book that
he helped produce. Mike Raymer was the lucky book
winner.
Thanks to our expert judges, David Garrard and
Brent Braun, as well as those who attended and participated as our “minglers”. As special thanks to KOZMO
Magic for donating the DVD’s and our celebrity judge
Mark Maxwell, owner of Mom’s Music.

“Keepers of Magic”
a review by Jim “Uncle Red” Harris
On Thursday October 28, Barb and I attended
the Keepers of Magic show at Bravo Restaurant. Bravo is an Italian restaurant located near Oxmoor Mall,
behind Oxmoor Ford.
Darshwood and Lion Fludd performed in the
“party room”, which is a room about 15 feet wide by
25 feet long. It’s what I would call intimate theatre.
The show was “sold out”, with about 30 or so in attendance. About eight of them were children. The performers worked on the floor at one end of the room.
Darshwood started the show, which lasted
about an hour. His performance of Martin Lewis’ rising card on sketchpad was a crowd pleaser. It looked
like real magic as the drawing slowly took on a life of
its’ own.
Lion followed with a mix of traditional magic
and mentalism. His linking of three borrowed finger
rings was very visual and effective. This is one of
the best presentations of the Himber ring that I have
ever seen. He finished the show with the cassette prediction (which has been upgraded to the CD prediction – technology!), making predictions from today’s
newspaper. The prediction CD had been held under
lock and key by Bravo’s management. Although this
was impressive, it was upstaged by a prior time prediction which was very clean and straightforward. A
time was selected by an audience member (8:47 PM
in this case). The audience member removed a large
clock from a manila envelope – and the hands were
positioned at 8:47.
The crowd was receptive and everyone had a
good time (not to mention the food is excellent). If you
haven’t seen this show, make arrangements to do so.
I see bumper stickers that say “Support our Troops”.
We need to support OUR troops, the members of the
Louisville Magic Club. We have one of the best magic
clubs in the nation, and supporting programs such as
this can only make our club stronger.
Check out the LMC website for
informative links to
performers and lecturers.

From the Bulletin Editor,
Michael Raymer
New year brings resolutions
Well, that’s a wrap! 2010 has
come to a close and what a year we
had! As we start another year, there’s
lots to do. Learning new subjects to teach; preparing
lesson plans, making tests, PowerPoint presentations,
working on lectures.
Preparing another year of the Magic SYMbol
magazine; interviewing professional magicians, coming up with ideas for issues and inspiring future stars
of magic.
Cleaning out the magic drawer and learning
some effects that were purchased years ago and then
set aside. Come on, you know we all do it...see a great
effect at a lecture and purchase it and then come home
and toss it in our magic case, drawer or closet. I still
do it, even with the three footlockers of magic and two
shelves in my basement - I still see something that I
think is “cool”. Every year we say “I’m going to quit
buying stuff and not using it” or “I’m only going to buy
effects that match my character.”
Well, I’m going to solve that for you with some
New Years Resolutions: I resolve to gain 10 pounds, I
resolve to spend more money, I resolve to stop procrastinating...starting tomorrow and I resolve to buy every
effect that I see and perform it in my act immediately
without practicing.
Have a Happy And Prosperous Year!
