Here in Korea, everywhere you
look, you see this slogan – in every
shape, size and form: on banners
fluttering from lampposts and
draped across skyscrapers, on
caps, t-shirts and coffee-cups. It
flashes across TV screens and is
emblazoned upon anything and
everything associated with these
Asian Youth Day celebrations.
So no one was surprised when
Pope Francis focussed on the individual words of this slogan during
his homily at the Mass closing
the 6th Asian Youth Day, using his
familiar 3-point catechetical approach, and confirming some of
his favourite inspirational themes.
As “Asians”, he said, “you have a
right and a duty to take full part in
the life of your societies. Do not be
afraid to bring the wisdom of faith
to every aspect of social life”. “As
Christians”, he continued, “you can
appreciate the many positive values of the diverse Asian cultures.
You are also able to discern what
is incompatible with your Catholic faith…and what aspects of
contemporary culture are sinful,
corrupt, and lead to death”.
As “Youth”, said Pope Francis, “you
are filled with the optimism, energy and good will which are so
characteristic of this period in life.
Let Christ turn your natural optimism into Christian hope, your
energy into moral virtue, your
good will into genuine self-sacrificing love”. “As Christians”, he
went on, “you are not only a part
of the future of the Church, you
are also a necessary and beloved
part of the Church's present”. The
Pope urged the young people of
Asia to keep close to one another,
to God, and their Bishops, in order
to build “a holier, more missionary
and humble Church” that seeks “to
serve the poor, the lonely, the infirm and the marginalised”.
As Asian Youth called to “Wake
up!”, concluded the Pope, you
have a responsibility and a duty
“to be vigilant, not to allow the
pressures, the temptations and
the sins of ourselves or others to
dull our sensitivity to the beauty of
holiness, to the joy of the Gospel”.
No one can do anything if they are
asleep, improvised Pope Francis
in English, repeating again and
again the challenge to “Wake up!”.

Safeguarding Children and Addressing Abuse
The Archdiocese Acts to Protect Youth and Children
Archbishop Myers has stated categorically that
the primary responsibilities of the Archdiocese
are to protect children and young people, and
to promote the healing of, and provide compassion to, victims of abuse.
The Archdiocese of Newark requires all staff
and volunteers working with children and
youth to undergo background checks and receive sexual abuse awareness training. More
than 20,000 Clergy, Religious and Lay people
have received this training and undergone
criminal background checks.
Nearly 95,000 children annually receive safe
environment training through our Catholic
schools and through opportunities offered to
public school students in our religious education programs.
The Archdiocese utilizes the services of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker as the first contact for individuals who allege that they were
abused so that counseling and other support
services can be offered immediately if appropriate – sometimes even before a determination is
made regarding the credibility of an allegation.
A full-time Office of Child and Youth Protection
dedicated to protecting children works with parishes and schools to ensure that safe environments are in place throughout the Archdiocese.

Meet The New Priests of
the Archdiocese of Newark
Father Doroteo B Layosa II
Born and raised in the
Philippines, Fr Layosa, 33,
was the fourth of six children of the late Cayetano
Layosa, a furniture maker,
and his wife, Lourdes Saldo. Before coming to the
US he studied at Holy Rosary Seminary in Naga City.
His family prayed the rosary every night
but it was the example of Monsignor Dominador Galicia that led him to the seminary.
“Mamong Doming” gave Fr Layosa his first
Holy Communion and his first Bible, which
remains a constant companion. “I witnessed
his simplicity, humility, great patience and
joyful heart in his priesthood and most of all
his dedication to prayer,” Fr Layosa said. “He
was a dedicated and holy man who loved and
served God and his people until he breathed
his last. I told him that I would want to be
like him.” Fr Layosa's first mass was offered
at St Henry in Bayonne, where he served as
a deacon.

Another Filipino, Fr Mabini joined the Redemptoris Mater seminary after
earning a bachelor's degree in agricultural technology at Davao Oriental
Science and Technology
back home. The son of Joana Mabini Rado
and Ferdinand Attilio, Fr Mabini, 31, is the eldest of seven.
During his formation, his fondest memories
were of serving missions in Belize and in
Saint Croix. “It was a challenging experience,
because the sufferings of these people were
quite visible,” he said, and only confirmed his
commitment to the priesthood.
His home parish is now Saint Aedan's: the
Saint Peter's University Church in Jersey City.
He served his diaconate at Saint Peter in Belleville.

A portion of the donations collected by the Annual Appeal is used to fund the seminary training and formation of our new priests. Your support of the Annual Appeal continues to directly
support the three seminaries maintained by the Archdiocese to educate and train future priests.
Help Students in Philippines
The Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God are asking for your help.
On 8 November 2013, Tacloban City of Philippines was hit by the full force of Typhoon Haiyan,
causing massive destruction across the city. 50%
of our Sacred Heart School was destroyed, especially the high school building and library. We
started a long journey of cleaning, repairing, and
rebuilding after Typhoon Haiyan. The school resumed on 6 January, 2014. 75% of students who
are from kindergarten to high school are back to
school now. In this coming October, the library
will be ready for the students. However, we do
not have the books in English for our library because only 2 books survived. We need all kinds
of the books (text books, references, magazines,
novels, arts, music, coloring and story books...)
from kindergarten to high school/college ( freshman & sophomore), and the school supplies as
well. We need your support to rebuild our school.

A Retreat For The Seriously Ill
GENNESARET, a retreat designed to provide a spiritual
and temporal oasis for men and women suffering with
a serious illness, will be held the weekend of Oct,17,1819
2014 at the Archdiocesan Retreat Center, located in Kearny N.J. The retreat will begin Friday at 1:30 P.M. and end

Pacem in Terris — Part One
Rights and Duties

In 1963, as the Cold War raged,
Pope John XXIII released his encyclical Pacem in Terris (Peace on
Earth). In this encyclical, he speaks
of the ordering of society and relations between persons and nations
from the perspective of Catholic
Social teaching. Starting out, he
says that peace on earth can only
be achieved if humanity follows
the order that God has established
for the earth. All human beings can
understand this order, as it is written on every heart and can be discovered through conscience. By following this order, states, peoples,
and individuals can develop their
relationships with each other. Pope
John asserts that every human being has, by nature, intelligence and
free will and is subject of rights and
obligations that are based upon
being created in God's image. By
respecting these mutual rights and
duties, human beings can live together in peace.
Pope John XXIII next lists these
rights and duties. Each person has
the right to life, bodily integrity,
and the means necessary for proper development (eg food, clothing,
shelter medical care, etc.) Next,
everyone has a right to a good reputation, the freedom to look for the
truth, and the right to form and
express their own opinions within
the limits of the moral order and
common good. He says that each
person has a right to be informed
about public events, to share in
the benefits of education and culture, to practice the religion of his
or her choice, to choose his or her
state of life, and to establish and
provide for a family. All people
have a right to work and to healthy
working conditions. These working
conditions should respect women's
duties as wives and mothers. Finally individuals have a right to a just
wage that acknowledges their dignity, and the right to private property. Pope John asserts that there
are also social rights, including the
rights to assembly and
association,
the right to
emigrate for
just reasons,
and the right

emphasizes that each right has a
corresponding duty which finds
its origin in natural law. The right
to life comes with the duty to preserve one's life and the right to a
just standard of living comes with
the duty to live within your means.
Overall, Pope John emphasizes
that Catholic social teaching holds
that all human beings have certain
rights that include corresponding
duties. Only by acknowledging and
respecting that each person, as a
being created in God's image, is
subject to these rights and duties
can we hope to establish peace in
the world.
