Greeks Get Philanthropic By: Marcus Martinez
Philanthropy: the desire to improve the
material, social, and spiritual welfare of humanity, especially through charitable activities. This is one thing that the Greek community rarely gets noticed for throughout the
community. But this semester, that has not
been the case. Within this past month, Greek
organizations has sponsored a total of five
magnanimous philanthropic events. So here is
a quick recap of the events that have happened
this last month.
PIKE held its annual Powder Puff Football
Tournament this past weekend. During this
event, sororities form flag football teams with
the help of a coach from Pi Kappa Alpha, and
compete against each other. After a long day
of intense games, Chi Omega was announced
the winner of this year’s Powder-Puff. The
proceeds of this event went to the Boys and
Girls Club.
The ladies of Alpha Xi Delta hosted their
first ever philanthropy event on campus called
the AmaXIng Challenge. The idea of this
event was based on the reality television show,
The Amazing Race. Teams of four went

around campus and performed challenges in
order to progress in the event and win one hundred dollars towards their philanthropy. All other
proceeds of this event went to Autism Speaks,
which is an organization dedicated to spreading
awareness about Autism.
“I think that it was an amazing idea, and that
not only Greeks but the community could participate in. I can see this event becoming bigger and
having their chapter stand out nationally,” said
Kiel Poore of Delta Sigma Phi.
Zeta Tau Alpha volunteered at the annual
Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. During this
event the NMSU Zetas and the UTEP Zetas arrived before dawn to help raise breast cancer
awareness. Over 16,000 people participated in
the 2010 Race, raising thousands of dollars for
the foundation. This year, many ZTA women
participated in the race itself contributing in another way to the ZTA philanthropy.
The annual Mr. NMSU pageant was put on by
Delta Zeta in order to raise money for the Painted
Turtle Camp, which is a camp for terminally ill
children.

Editor. More students than ever are going on to
graduate school and other higher education
schooling than ever before.
According to Linda Lacey, Dean of the
Graduate School, there has been a significant
increase in the number of New Mexico State
University alumni continuing on to masters
and doctoral degrees. Attendance has risen
from “2400 graduate students in 2002 and,
now, in 2010, the rough numbers are around
3800 students,” said Lacey.
Some students that continue onto graduate
school do so because they don’t know what to
do after they get their undergraduate degree.

Philanthropy Events
Miss PUSH America
PUSH America was founded by members of Pi Kappa
Phi in 1977 and remains the national philanthropy of
the fraternity, with the mission of building the leaders
of tomorrow by serving people with disabilities today.
Pi Kappa Phi held their Miss Push America Pageant to
raise money for this philanthropy.
Mr. NMSU
The Painted Turtle Camp seeks to reach beyond illness
by inspiring children with life-threatening diseases to
become more self confident and self reliant. It is their
mission to provide a year-round, life-changing environment for these children and their families - one that
allows children to participate in an authentic camp experience by supporting their medical needs, and offers
their families care, education, and respite. The Delta
Zeta Sorority sponsors a cabin at The Painted Turtle
Camp through the money raised at the Mr. NMSU pageant.
Race for the Cure
The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is the world's
largest and most successful fundraising event for breast
cancer. The Race not only raises significant funds and
awareness for the fight against breast cancer but also
celebrates those who have survived the disease, and
memorializes those who have died from it. Zeta Tau
Alpha volunteers and participates in this event to raise
money and awareness for their philanthropy.

PIKE Powder Puff
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America is a national
organization whose mission is to "enable all young
people, especially those who need us most, to
reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens." Pi Kappa Alpha holds an annual Powder Puff Tournament. The money raised
goes to the Boys & Girls Club.
Derby Days
The Children's Miracle Network is an international
non-profit organization that raises funds for children’s hospitals, medical research and community
awareness of children's health issues. Sigma Chi
held their first annual Derby Days, as a way to
raise money for this philanthropy.

Money is a big part of the grad school decision. A semester of graduate school at NMSU currently costs $2,682 for
New Mexico residents while non-residents will pay $7,767.
This is the cost for 12-18 credits taken, and does not include
other fees such as lab fees for students pursuing degrees in
sciences. The cost of graduate school can escalate causing
students to go into debt in a struggling economy.
Dr. Lacey said workshops and seminars are held throughout the year to discuss with students all they need to know
about grad school including money issues. A lot of information was received just by making the journey down to
Anderson Hall, located next to O’Donnell Hall.

gives tips on applying to grad school and other factors that
should be considered.

During this event, gentlemen from different campus organizations participated in the pageant, performed a talent, and participated in what was called the “Mr. Sexy Legs” contest. In
the end, Lambda Chi Alpha’s Andrew Beck won the overall
pageant and the contestant representing Kappa Sigma won the
Mr. Sexy Legs contest. Delta Zeta raised over $3000 from the
event.
The gentlemen of Sigma Chi held an event new to campus
called Derby Days. “This year we had eight teams, and
throughout the week they participated in nightly events and
also weekly events. Events included penny wars, a derby capture, a sundae contest, and a drag night. Each team was represented by a liaison from the chapter who reported to their team
every morning with clues about where the ‘golden derby’ was
to be found that day,” Vice President Tyler Lengal said.
Sigma Chi raised approximately $2000 for the Children’s
Miracle Network. The winners of this event were the “Xi
Derby’s” of Alpha Xi Delta.
“I think it is amazing that all the fraternities and sororities
are getting together to help out each other to raise money for
each of their philanthropies. It's a great way for each of us to
get to know all the different causes we are working on and is a
great way to help raise awareness. It also helps bring positive
light to the Greek community,” said Elizabeth Garibay of
Delta Zeta.

Happenings
With the Greek community working together to better the
world, they show the community they are willing to take the
time to go out of their way to make the world a better place.
Greek of the Month
Rebekah Balizan - Chi Omega
Rebekah Balizan is not only an
amazing Chi Omega but an amazing
woman. She is going to school full
time majoring in Computer Science
Engineering and works three jobs.
She is the recruitment chair for Chi
Omega and is a Greek Week Director for NMSU Greek Week 2010.
She is an amazing sister and is the
epitome of what a Chi Omega
should be. All of her sisters are
proud to call her sister and know that
anything she does in life will be a
success at.
