1997 SENEPOL BOARD OF DIRECTORS
As seedstock producers, we've just lived through a relatively dismal cattle price
cycle. It provided the opportunity to purchase cattle last fall for resale last spring
or to build our herds with low cost replacements. However, most of us were a bit
too timid to seize the moment. Now with fall rains replenishing parched pastures
and prices being more stable the "wish I had" club has lots of new members.

I have had the opportunity to study some of the herds that have survived tough
times in the cattle business before. Much of what separates the short-term
purebred breeder from the long-term seedstock producer is their respective ability
to find the opportunities and their desire to act upon them. Bovine opportunists
seem to have herd numbers at low levels just before cattle prices start to fall, yet
arrive at the peak of the price cycles with their pastures overstocked and ready to
sell. Many of these folks that expect to be around for awhile have started building,
expanding their herd numbers. They see the opportunity!
There will be more Senepol sold via private treaty and public auction in the fall of
'97 than at any time in the past. What an opportunity! More to choose from, greater
genetic variation, greater depth of quality. In short, more Senepol genetic value
than has ever been available! The opportunity is there - all you have to do is act.
The SCBA is doing its part to increase your opportunity for profit! All you have to
do is read this issue of Senepol World!
The Reduced Rate Registration Fee has been extended through Dec. 31. Several
fall sales have already indicated that the demand for Senepol has increased,
especially from the commercial segment of the industry. They are worth more if
they are registered and this reduced rate registration fee allows breeders to register
some older cattle that have slipped through the cracks at the low rate of $15 each.
Even if they are over 2 years old, it's still only $15 per head.
SCBA's Lifetime Membership has been marked down to the Holiday sale price of
only $500. This means you can buy it once, and never be burdened with having to
pay dues again. You will be protected from any future price increases or late
charges on annual dues.

Performance Programs & Sire Summary Dr. John Hough
The Command Performance Show & Sale at the Houston Livestock Show &
Rodeo is scheduled for Feb. 20-21 and will put Senepol on display at the world's
largest livestock exposition. Literally hundreds of thousands of cattlemen from
around the world will get their first look at Senepol. Each of us should seize the
opportunity to attend this event and make sure their first impression of Senepol is
a great one! The international interest in Senepol is at an all-time high, and this
event will be of great value to our breed as we work to enter some of those global
markets.
It's said that you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. That's true
enough of our situation. The next 24 months are going to be full of opportunities
for Senepol cattle and the folks that raise them. All indications are that Senepol is
going to get a bigger slice of the pie - the opportunity is there, but it's self serve!

Longford son. That is why we selected him as our junior
herd sire to complement our senior herd sire RAB Mr

heart girth. His dam maintained a sub-365-day calving
interval for 8 calves. BW 75, WW Ratio: 117.
RAB Mr Efficiency Sl 26A is proving to be a breed impacting
sire. He is a multiple-trait sire that produces moderate birth

SCBA Extends Reduced Registration Fee on
Older Animals Through December 31st!
Remember, They're worth more if they are registered ....
The Board of Directors of the Senepol Cattle
Breeders Association has opted to extend the
special reduced registration fee incentives
throughout the remainder of 1998.
Originally, this incentive, wh1ch began at the '97
National Senepol Convention in Pigeon Forge,
Tenn., was to have run through October.
The decision to extend this incentive came after
member comments that fall was the normal time
most spring calving programs would take care of
their registrations, thus it would be more
convenient if the reduced registration fee were
extended throughout the fall.
through the cracks, and have become over one year
of age without being registered. Through this offer,
no registration will cost more than $15. Prior to this
special incentive, registering .an 18-month-old
animal might have cost $25, or even as much as $50
if the animal was over two years of age. Animals
that are eligible for registration at the $12 fee (0-9
months of age) will still be registered at that price,
and will be unaffected by the reduced registration
fee incentive.
The goal of this incentive is twofold;
first to increase registrations by making it more
affordable to members; second, to gain some
animals in the Senepol database that had been
omitted, because they were not registered.
The reduced registration fee offers tremendous
savings when registering animals that had slipped

ABOUT GENETIC TRAIT LEADERS
A Genetic Trait Leader is a bull that exhibits genetic
superiority in at least one of five individual traits as reported in
the Senepol Sire Summary. There is also a Multiple Trait
Performance Sire award which recognizes sires who exhibit
superiority in combined traits. Genetic superiority may be
defined by a particular bull's EPDs (Expected Progeny
Difference) as reported in the Senepol Sire Summary, and how
they are superior to the rest of the bulls evaluated for a given
trait.
Changes in the 1997 Senepol Sire Summary
The Board of Directors of the SCBA has approved some
changes in both the 1997 Senepol Sire Summary and the
selection of Genetic Trait Leaders. First, the list of Senepol Sires
has been divided into active and inactive. Inactive sires are
those that have not sired a recorded calf since Jan. 1, 1994.
Additionally, inactive sires must have a minimum accuracy for
Weaning Weight EPD of .50. In most cases, inactive sires are
dead, and have no semen available, or, if semen is available, it
has not produced a recorded calf in the above specified time
frame. Active sires have produced a recorded calf since Jan. 1,
1994, and they must have a minimum accuracy for Weaning
Weight EPD of .40. The active sires represent those bulls seeing
the heaviest use today, and over the last two or three years.
PAGE6
Changes in the Selection of Genetic Trait Leaders
The primary change in the selection of Genetic Trait
Leaders is that they will only be selected from the Active
Sire List. Otherwise the selection criteria is the same. For
individual traits (including Birth Weight, Weaning
Weight, Maternal Milk, Milk & Growth, and Yearling
Weight EPDs), a sire must have a minimum accuracy of
.60, and have an EPD which ranks him in the top 10% of
the sires listed in the sire summary.
Multiple Trait Performance sires were those that
ranked in the top one-third of the bulls listed in the
Senepol Sire Summary, and had minimum accuracies of
.40 for each of the following traits: Weaning Weight,
Maternal Milk, Milk & Growth and Yearling Weight. In the
past, there was no selection pressure put on Birth Weight
EPD in the selection of a Multiple Trait Performance Sire.
This year, however, the Board approved a change that
requires a sire rank within the lightest two-thirds of the
sires listed in the sire summary for Birth Weight EPD, and
have a minimum accuracy of .40 for that trait to achieve
Multiple Trait Performance status. This is an additional
requirement to those listed above for the other individual
traits.

Ranchers' Rights
by Bob Kingsbery
I.
Ranchers have the right to care for their animals 24 hours a
day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year, for the rest of their
lives. Without salary, overtime pay, pension plan, two-week
vacations, medical insurance, retirement at 65, or any
guarantee they will make a living from one year to the next.
VI. Ranchers have the right to put the health and well-being of
their animals above everything else, including their own
health, wealth and well-being, whi le still taking time to worry
about the real problems of the world: poverty, hunger, war,
crime and fanatics.
II.
Ranchers have the right to spend all their money, including
life savings, Christmas and vacation money, to feed their
animals during droughts and bad winters. When they run out
of money, they have the right to borrow more, regardless of
the interest rate.
VII. Ranchers have the right to make sure their animals are fed and
watered 24 hours a day - no matter how hot, cold, wet or
miserable the weather - before they get to eat or sleep
themselves.
III.
Ranchers have the right to be kicked, stomped, knocked
down, exhausted, frustrated and impoverished by their
animals, without retaliating in any way, except cussing.
Softly, so they don't upset their animals .
IV.
V.
Ranchers have the right to treat their animals for every minor
injury and illness; while ignoring their own bruises, sprains,
swelling, cuts, scrapes and loose teeth acquired while caring
for their animals.
VIII. Ranchers have the right to lose their ranch, their home, their
health and even their loved ones by spending all their time,
money and love on their an imals.
IX. Ranchers have the 1ight to the special satisfaction that comes
from providing a valuable service to society and devoting their
lives to caring for their land and livestock.
X.
Ranchers have the right to ranch. And for every uninformed
animal-rights kook, a thousand people would love to have that
right.
Ranchers have the right to cancel family outings, vacations,
anniversaries and birthday parties, at a moment's notice, in
order to solve some last-minute ranch crisis.
