Around the world, our medicines help millions of people in their fight against cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hepatitis B, HIV/AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis and psychiatric disorders. our strategy At Bristol-Myers Squibb, our BioPharma strategy uniquely combines the reach and resources of a major pharma company with the entrepreneurial spirit and innovation of a successful biotech company. This strategy has produced strong results for our company in recent years – and it positions us well to address a changing marketplace and our customers’ evolving needs. Bristol-Myers Squibb’s R&D organization is considered among the most productive in the industry. Since 2002, we have delivered nine key products for patients in need. Six of those medications were discovered internally by Bristol-Myers Squibb scientists. And our pipeline continues to expand: In 2009, Bristol-Myers Squibb increased the number of compounds across all of its therapeutic areas in Exploratory and Full Development by nearly 40 percent. About one-third of our compounds in development are biologics. In addition, we continue to enhance our internal capabilities through strategic partnerships, alliances and acquisitions – our String of Pearls strategy. These pearls have been pivotal to the company’s continued progress in biologics, targeted small molecules and other next-generation platforms. NOUS08UBPI16404_v4_2010_FellowsBrochure.indd 1 our resPonsiBility As a BioPharma leader, integrity is the foundation from which we work. We take our responsibilities seriously, and strive always to do the right thing for the benefit of the patients and customers we serve, our employees, our company and our communities worldwide. Through our philanthropic organization, the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation, we seek to bridge gaps in health care and address health disparities. Our Foundation focuses on community-based programs to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa, hepatitis in Asia, type 2 diabetes and serious mental illness in the U.S., and cancer in central and eastern Europe. The model for these programs is Bristol-Myers Squibb’s groundbreaking SECURE THE FUTURE®. This $150 million program, established in 1999 to help confront HIV/AIDS in Africa, has funded more than 240 projects in 20 African countries, integrating clinic-based medical care with community-based health education and supportive care. Preservation of our natural resources also represents one of our key commitments. At many of our facilities worldwide, our company is integrating comprehensive energy management, pollution controls and other practices to reduce environmental impacts. Since 2000, the company has met and surpassed the majority of its sustainability goals, including a 40 percent reduction in energy use, normalized to sales. Bristol-Myers Squibb was ranked eighth among 500 of the largest U.S. corporations in Newsweek’s 2009 Green Ranking. Bristol-Myers Squibb is also a great place to work. We are committed to a diverse workforce and an inclusive culture. We are also committed to recruiting, retaining and developing top talent. Bristol-Myers Squibb delivers on its commitments: to our patients and customers, to our employees, to our global communities, to our shareholders and to the environment. 1 10/27/10 9:41 AM 2010 / 2011 Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program Program history JosePh a. Barone, Pharm.D., f.c.c.P. Professor and Chairman, Pharmacy Practice and Administration In 1984, at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy and two pharmaceutical companies began a collaborative pilot program to evaluate the potential contributions of clinically-trained pharmacists within a pharmaceutical industry practice setting. Following the successful pilot, the Rutgers Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship (RPIF) Program grew significantly and expanded to include 12 companies within the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries and almost 90 Fellows annually. The RPIF Program has thrived under the leadership of the founder, Dr. Joseph A. Barone, Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administration and Dr. James G. Alexander, a Fellowship alumnus and now the Director of the Institute for Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowships. In 2002, Dr. Ernest Mario generously provided an endowment to establish the Institute for Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowships to enhance and promote the role of pharmacists in industry through the RPIF Program. The Institute staff members: • provide leadership and administrative support; • promote quality, communication, and scholarly activity; and • arrange specialized Fellowship training opportunities within the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries. James g. alexanDer, Pharm.D. More than 500 post-doctoral Fellows have completed the RPIF Program, most of whom are pursuing influential and rewarding careers in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries throughout the US and abroad. The RPIF Program has preceptors/mentors from the industry who share their knowledge and experiences with the Fellows through an intense but closely-guided training program. Assignments and projects are challenging, meaningful, and designed to enhance understanding of the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries and the Fellow’s functional area. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, with approximately 54,000 students in its three campuses, is one of the major state university systems in the United States. The New Jersey College of Pharmacy was founded in 1892 and was incorporated into the University in 1927. The Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy is the only school of pharmacy in New Jersey, with approximately 1,400 students in its Doctor of Pharmacy program. The Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy is located on the University’s main science and technology campus in Piscataway, New Jersey. Because of its close proximity to the nation’s leading pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies, the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy and the RPIF Program are uniquely capable of providing Fellows with exposure to the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries. 2 NOUS08UBPI16404_v4_2010_FellowsBrochure.indd 2 10/27/10 9:41 AM 2010 / 2011 Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program Bristol-myers sQuiBB comPonent rutgers comPonent Bristol-Myers Squibb and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy are collaborating to offer post-Pharm.D. fellowships in: Medical Education, Medical Information, Medical Science Liaison, Medical Strategy, Scientific Communications, R&D Strategy and Analytics, Advertising and Promotion Regulations, Global and US Medical Affairs, and Health Policy and Advocacy. The Fellows will become an integral part of their respective teams and will be trained to manage a broad range of responsibilities, similar to those managed by current team members. This fellowship program will necessitate interaction and teamwork with departments in all aspects of the corporation, such as Global Pharmacovigilance and Labeling, Sales, Medical Strategy, Marketing, Regulatory Services, Legal, Clinical Trials, Post-Marketing Clinical Research, and Health Care Channel Management. A significant majority of the fellowship experience is spent at the participating company, gaining industry experience. Fellows are appointed as Rutgers adjunct faculty, providing opportunities in the academic component of the program. These include teaching or precepting pharmacy students, as well as poster, publication and research opportunities. While at Bristol-Myers Squibb, the Fellows will participate in various team-building activities and attend leadership development lectures with senior management. The Fellows will also have opportunities to participate in a mentorship program with senior management and fellowship alumni, to lead and take part in fellowship committees, and to attend Lunch and Learn meetings. Bristol-Myers Squibb is committed to providing its Fellows with opportunities to develop networks and gain exposure to new perspectives throughout the company. NOUS08UBPI16404_v4_2010_FellowsBrochure.indd 3 Professional DeVeloPment series All Fellows gather at Rutgers once or twice monthly as a group to participate in the Professional Development Day (PDD) Series, an important component of their training that complements the handson experience provided at the partner companies. The PDDs are steered by a committee of Fellows and are designed to enhance the Fellows’ presentation skills, promote connectivity and a sense of community among Fellows from different companies and disciplines, develop new skill sets under the guidance of external trainers, and provide general knowledge about various aspects of drug development and issues facing the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries. The Fellows learn from each other through individual and group presentations on topics and issues related to the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries. This dynamic forum provides an opportunity for open discussion and debate among Fellows, Rutgers faculty and company preceptors. In addition, outside experts provide training and professional development in a variety of areas (e.g., tools for corporate success; professional writing, presentation, negotiating, influencing, networking, and conflict resolution skills; giving and receiving feedback; and business and dining etiquette). Other PDD guest speakers include industry executives and successful RPIF Program alumni who share their insights and experiences. Importantly, PDDs provide an excellent opportunity for Fellows to interact with each other and develop lasting personal friendships and a strong professional network of Fellows, faculty, alumni and other industry executives. 3 10/27/10 9:42 AM 2010 / 2011 Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Program testimonials learn from the exPeriences of colleagues “ The Bristol-Myers Squibb Fellowship program has provided me with a solid foundation in Medical Information.
