Earnings of Lopez Group
listed companies surge
EARNINGS of listed companies that belong to the Lopez
Group surged in 2014 following
the stellar performance of operating units, especially Energy Development Corporation (EDC)
and First Gen Corporation.
The 146% increase in EDC’s
attributable net income contributed to the 64% rise in First
Gen’s attributable net income,
which in turn drove its parent company, First Philippine
Holdings Corporation (FPH),
to a 140% jump in attributable
income to P5.632 billion in 2014
from P2.350B in 2013. FPH re-
ported a 7% increase in revenues
to P99.307B from P93.057B.
Sale of electricity accounted for
85% of FPH revenues in 2014
versus 86% of revenues in 2013.
Rockwell Land Corporation, a subsidiary of FPH,
also reported robust financial
results with a 13% growth in
revenues to P8.853B and 11%
increase in attributable net
income to P1.563B. Rockwell
Land expects to sustain its
growth momentum with a
steady stream of residential
and commercial projects in the
pipeline. It is also aiming to
increase its recurring revenue
base with the forthcoming expansion of Power Plant Mall.
Meanwhile,
ABS-CBN
revenues were flat while attributable net income improved by
11%. However, after removing
the effects of election-related advertising booked in 2013, ABSCBN’s recurring net income
actually increased by 42%.
All these led to a 94% increase in the attributable net
income of the Group’s listed
parent company, Lopez Holdings Corporation (see story on
this page). (Carla Paras-Sison)
Lopez Holdings net income
attributable to parent at P3.760B
LOPEZ Holdings Corporation reported a 94% increase
in net income attributable to
equity holders of the parent in
2014 to P3.760 billion, from
P1.943B in 2013. The strong
performance of First Philippine Holdings Corporation
(FPH) and associates accounted for the growth.
Consolidated revenues increased by 7% to P100.654B
from P94.269B as FPH sub-
sidiaries contributed to higher
revenues. ABS-CBN Corporation net income was flat
compared to 2013, but surged
42% in 2014 after stripping out
the effects of election-related
advertisements the previous
year.
“The favorable financials of
Lopez Holdings for 2014 are
the result of the strong fullyear performance of its associates. FPH and ABS-CBN will
continue to be in investment
mode and pursue the strategic initiatives that have been
mapped out in the medium
term,” said Lopez Holdings
president, chief operating officer and chief finance officer
Salvador G. Tirona.
As of December 31, 2014,
Lopez Holdings held a 56%
economic interest in ABSCBN and owned 46% of FPH.

Dispatch from Japan
MORE than 600 Japanese
investors and business executives participated in the recent
Philippine investment seminar
organized by the Philippine
Embassy in Tokyo through
the Philippine Trade and Investment Centre in Tokyo.
The seminar presented the
latest business and investment
opportunities in the Philippines before Japanese businessmen, corporate managers,
SMEs and investors.
Ambassador Manuel M.
Lopez (AMML) opened the
seminar by highlighting the
Philippines’ 6.1% economic
growth in 2014—second only
to China—and its robust stra-
tegic partnership with Japan,
which continues to create more
opportunities for two-way
trade, investment and tourism.
In his keynote speech,
Trade Sec. Gregory Domingo
said the Philippines continues
to enjoy excellent trade relations with Japan, which is still
the Philippines’ top trading
partner with over $19 billion
total trade in 2014, a 10% increase from 2013.
Public Works Sec. Rogelio

administration’s gains in improving road, bridge, airport
and seaport infrastructure,

ers to bring about accountability as well as efficiency in the
media-buying process.
In his speech during the
Media Specialists Association
of the Philippines 2015 media
congress, ABS-CBN chairman
Eugenio Lopez III (EL3) said
the CPIRP (cost per individual
rating point) pricing model is one
of the innovations that the company hopes to carry out starting
this May.
“Traditional media buying
practice in the Philippines is
one where we apply a fixed cost
regardless of the program performance,” he said. “Now, that
will change with the CPIRP
or cost per individual rating
point scheme. It is based on the
globally accepted and proven
CTARP [cost per target audience rating point] model.”

ABS-CBN Corporation is
spending about P500 million
this year to extend its digital
broadcasting capability to the
Visayas and Mindanao.
ABS-CBN said five digital
transmitters, which each costs
about P100M, will be set up in
Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Bacolod,
and Cagayan de Oro.
In February, ABS-CBN
launched its digital TV service
covering Metro Manila, Rizal,
Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan,
Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Benguet and
Metro Cebu.
The company said it has
spent about P2 billion so far for
the shift to digital terrestrial
television using the Japanese
standard.
“We started that three years
ago, so we made a bet that government was going to use Japanese technology. We feel that
if [GMA]-7 and [TV5] want
to catch up, it will take them
at least that long to reach the
same kind of coverage that we
have today,” ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio Lopez III (EL3)
said at a press briefing after
the firm’s annual stockholders’
meeting on April 24.
Bulacan soundstages
EL3 said the firm’s five
soundstages in Bulacan are
also expected to be completed
within the year.
Currently, 80% of the production is done on location
while 20% is in studios. EL3
said the soundstages will reverse that.
“The advantage of doing
studio is the fact that you
will not be subject to the
vagaries of the weather. The
quality and the productivity
increase immeasurably when
you shoot in the studio,” EL3
said.
“You will see when we shoot
in the new soundstages, the
quality of our production will
be very different from what it
is today,” he added.
EL3 said the firm is expecting to have at least 10 soundstages by the end of 2016. (Excerpted

Jeepney TV brings back
‘Baywatch’
Jeepney TV (SKYcable Channel 9) becomes the
first cable channel in the Philippines to revive
“Baywatch,” which captured Filipino audiences
during its initial run on ABS-CBN some 15 years
ago. The TV series follows the story of lifeguards
in California led by Mitch Buchannon (David
Hasselhoff ). “Baywatch” will air weekdays at 7
p.m. beginning on May 4, with day-after weekday
repeats at 12 p.m. starting May 5.
‘Nathaniel’ a
source of
inspiration
“Nathaniel” has touched the
hearts of TV viewers because
of the inspiration and good
values it teaches families every night. They will
surely get more hooked on the story of Nathaniel
(Marco Masa) now that he has met his dad Paul
(Gerald Anderson). Don’t miss the continuation
of the story that will inspire everyone to have faith
in the goodness of people, “Nathaniel,” weeknights
on ABS-CBN Primetime Bida.
‘Dream Dad’ finds happy
ending
“Dream Dad” was the number one most-watched
program in the Philippines during its run, and its
final episode in April performed true to form. The
ABS-CBN drama finished on top of its game with
a national TV rating of 34.6%, beating its rival
program’s 14.9%. The series was a hit because of
its light and values-oriented narrative, the endearing character of Baby ( Jana Agoncillo), and the
romantic tension between Baste (Zanjoe Marudo)
and Alex (Beauty Gonzales), his love interest.
Erich joins ‘Forevermore’
Erich Gonzales adds more thrill to the primetime
viewing experience of TV viewers with her special
appearance as the mysterious girl named Alex in
“Forevermore.” Xander (Enrique
Gil) and Agnes (Liza Soberano)
will face more changes as Alex
enters their lives. Who is Alex
and what will be her role in
Xander and Agnes’ relationship?
Don’t miss the last three weeks
of “Forevermore,” weeknights after “Nathaniel”
on ABS-CBN Primetime Bida.

Mayweather
outpoints
Pacquiao
for 48th win
FLOYD Mayweather Jr. backed
up his claim of being “The Best
Ever” as he outpointed Filipino
fighter Manny Pacquiao to win the
much-hyped “Fight of the Century” in front of a packed crowd at
the MGM Grand Garden Arena
in Las Vegas on May 3.
Facing a hostile, mostly pro-Pacquiao crowd, Mayweather lived up
to his status as the odds-on favorite
entering the fight and flashed the
form that made him the top poundfor-pound boxer in the world.
The judges scored the bout 118110, 116-112, and 116-112, giving
Mayweather his 48th straight victory.
The American retained the WBC
and the WBA welterweight championships, while also annexing Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight title.
Pacquiao made a good account
of himself and gave a strong effort, but it was not enough as he
suffered the sixth loss of his career
against 57 wins and two draws.
Mayweather was gracious in
victory, as he said after the fight:
“He’s a hell of a fighter. I take my
hat off to Manny Pacquiao. I see
now why he’s one of the guys that’s
at the pinnacle of boxing.”
Meanwhile, the “Punch ng Bayan”
meter of ABS-CBN’s “Isang Bayan
Para Kay Pacman” campaign has
reached 101,732,898 punches as of
May 4. The campaign aimed to “rally
everyone to be one for Manny,” said

‘Me and My SKY’

THE leadership team of SKY

general assembly held at Eton
Centris in Quezon City.
The “Me and My SKY” corporate campaign, which takes
inspiration from the realization
that SKY has made a meaningful difference in people’s

launched during the event.
The event was attended by
employees from SKY’s Mega

key regional areas, including
Cebu, Davao, Baguio, Bacolod

As SKY chief operating
officer Ray Montinola said,
“…Different strokes for different folks but only one thing
is common—SKY somehow
made things better.”
A 60-second TV commercial
was presented that used a shortened version of an original song
especially created for SKY. The

THREE years ago, ABS-CBN
Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc. executive director
Gina Lopez mobilized Bantay
Kalikasan to help develop
and market two ecotourism
sites in Puerto Princesa City,
Palawan.
Today, there are five
flourishing ecotourism and
livelihood projects in Palawan.
The communities are self-sufficient, with one site providing
work to 275 families who are
able to send their children to
school, even up to college.
She proudly announces

ment. She believes that every
successful ecotourism site will
eventually turn the tide in favor
of poor communities that happen to live in the most beautiful
scenic spots in the country.
Barangays’ way out of
poverty
Her G • Eco Tours team
gets the inputs of each community on how best to develop
nature’s attractions for tourists,
helps them build infrastructure such as ports to improve
access, and trains them to be
“Earth Warriors.” By teaching
residents how nature itself can
be the entire barangay’s way out
of poverty, G • Eco Tours builds
a pool of environmentally con-
(PRRC), she feels fortunate
that the assignment is apolitical.
“PRRC is just cleaning the
river. That’s the only intention.
We don’t have any political
problems because everybody
wants a clean river. In fact,
we are able to receive
the cooperation of
all the mayors.”
Even after
her appointment as a government official
ends, Lopez knows
she will continue with
her advocacies.
“ABS-CBN is in media.

Thus, for the traveler who
doesn’t want to settle for “the

to open up a slew of other sites,
including Samar; Concepcion

and Iba in Zambales.
But which ecotourism destination is for you? Cabigao
breaks it down for prospective
visitors:

At the living museum of
Lamilifew in Sarangani, visitors will get to see the “dream
weavers of the South” at work,
so called because the women
weave designs that must come
to them in a dream, says Cabigao, a longtime New Yorker
who joined G • Eco Tours at its
inception five months ago.
Norie Garcia, Bantay Kalikasan program manager, adds:
“Instead of bringing them to
the city to show their traditions, we encourage tourists to
go to the community and see
how they, for example, grow 20
varieties of camote and several
varieties of upland rice, weave
their cloths and continue to do
their traditional dances.”
Bantay Kalikasan works
closely with the G • Eco Tours
team in selecting and developing the different sites. Pre- G
• Eco Tours, the environmental arm of ALKFI launched
the Ugong Rock ecotourism
project in Palawan in 2008.
The site made P31 million last
year, a 35% increase over 2013’s
P23 million. It is now being
run independently by the residents, who have expanded the
livelihood activities to include
restaurant and photography
ventures and, soon, organic
farming.
“We try to bring forward
the insights we get from our
communities, like stakeholder
engagement,” Garcia says of
their takeaway from the highly
successful Ugong Rock project.
Since they don’t remain in
the area yet want the project to
be sustainable, the group shares
its strategies and collaborates
with the local government,
barangay leaders and other
stakeholders who understand
the values they want to impart.

with businesses that have the
same vision as we do—that of
a Philippines with eco-friendly
tourism practices that support
sustainable community building efforts and responsible care
for the environment. We cannot partner with a hotel that
disregards the environment, for
example, or treats their workers
unfairly.”
Gina Lopez’s penchant
for getting things done fast is
also a great catalyst for change
because her sense of urgency
drives the team forward to
achieve its targets.
“It’s exciting because we are
able to leverage the strength
of the foundation, our networking capacity and various
resources and sectors,” Garcia
points out.
Today, while Bantay Kalikasan focuses on delivering its
goal targets under environment
conservation, livelihood and
community participation, G •
Eco Tours takes care of marketing the sites—or, as Cabigao
calls it, “the fun part.”
“We show the sites to our
area managers so they can
think of ways to package them
as tourist destinations. We look
for things that need to be done,
how we can beef up the souvenir items, what’s the wow factor,
how to differentiate it from the
other sites,” Cabigao says.
The G • Eco Tours manager,
who works with a team of four
in Manila aside from the area
managers, describes a G • Eco
Tours package as a “vacation
with a conscience.”
“After a while you can only
do so much sunbathing, getting
drunk on the beach and all of
that. You see the beauty of
nature and say, ‘Wait a minute,
will my kids see that? Will my
apo see this?’ When you go to
a G • Eco Tours destination,
you’re helping a community
that also has that purpose in
mind—to retain what you see
now for generations to come.”
At the same time, Cabigao
adds, the communities need to
be the ones lifted out of poverty.
“As GL [Gina Lopez]
would say, ‘I don’t mind entrepreneurs getting rich, but the
communities should also get
rich with them.’ And rightfully
so because the people in the
communities are the ones that
take care of the environment,
so you also want them to be
responsible for their own backyard.”
But, in the end, what G
• Eco Tours and Bantay Kalikasan really want is for visitors
to go to the sites themselves.
“The key thing is to see and
experience the sites—being
in the world’s densest forest
in Sibuyan, seeing untouched
islands and rivers, eating local
food, island hopping,” Garcia
says.
“If you’re surrounded by
beauty, your outlook towards
life changes. And the Filipinos
are the best in terms of being
friendly and hospitable. Beautiful views and the care and attention of the Filipinos—that’s
the best combination in any
vacation,” Cabigao asserts.
Her vision is simple: “We
can’t change the whole country
all at once. But we can create
models of success, to show
similarly situated communities
that ecotourism is feasible and
can provide sustainable employment over the long term.
Because if we just do it in one
site, then people might say we
just got lucky. But if we are able
to succeed in many sites, then
they will know that it’s not
luck. It means the business really works and is sustainable.”
Lopez
acknowledges
that the country’s economic
growth has not been inclusive.
She proposes that ecotourism is a sustainable enterprise
that can alleviate poverty and,
at the same time, protect the
country’s natural environ-
scious tourist guides as well as
active protectors of the forests,
where fresh streams flow and
trees provide nutritious food
and healing medicines.
The team also counts on the
support of local governments to
help the community prosper in a
sustainable manner. “The LGU
(local government unit) has to
be friendly. Otherwise, it will be
very difficult for the project to
move forward,” Lopez says.

Premier objective
She believes members of the
Lopez Group are privileged to
be part of a conglomerate that
has national development as a
premier objective.
“Our family (the Lopez
family) has always been interested in the national well-being.
In that way, we are all very lucky
to be part of this Group.”
Her message to LopezLink

your families, your companies
so you will have a grand time.

Helping the helpers
ALKFI executive director Gina Lopez (at right, back to

G • Eco Tours and Bantay Kalikasan work together in finding, packaging and managing
destinations, while government
and private-sector partners take
up their own share of the load
in getting Philippine communities out of poverty.
G • Eco Tours has assembled an enviable roster of
private-sector partners that
reads like a who’s who of the
Philippine design, culinary
arts, and architecture sectors.
Architects Paulo Alcazaren
and Bong Recio are helping
behind the scenes in the soonto-open Samar package, while
the heads of key departments
of the College of St. Benilde
have signed on for Sorsogon.
On the culinary front, chefs
from the Raintree Restaurants
group flew in community
members and trained them in
menu planning, food preparation and presentation in various Raintree establishments
in Metro Manila. The Farm at
San Benito in Batangas also
provides wellness and massage
training to the locals.
“It’s super inspiring and fun
to be working with people who
are like-minded, who believe
in the Philippines,” G • Eco
Tours manager Mael Cabigao
says.
The third partner in the
triumvirate is the community
itself.
“We’d like to see a constant
growth in their income as a
community so we look for ways
to up that income. We’re beefing up the souvenir items, for
example, by helping them with
the designs,” Cabigao notes.
G • Eco Tours constantly
monitors the progress of the
community and, in cases where
sales have plateaued, steps in
for an intervention of sorts.
“We look into it and make
sure that we’re not remiss in
our obligations to help them
succeed in their targets. But
most of them are independent
in that they’re the ones who set
their own targets as well,” says
Cabigao.
Select residents are trained
to become “Earth Warriors,”
men, women and youth who
take to heart the whole idea
of sustainability and the importance of protecting the environment. At the end of the
exercise, the participants have
a graduation ceremony led
by ALKFI chief Gina Lopez
where they formally take on
the “Earth Warrior” designation.

Orchestra (ABS-CBN P.O.),
the Philippine Philharmonic
Orchestra (PPO) and the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth
(OFY), whose members belong
to the disadvantaged members
of society, the performers tell the
inspiring story of Ang Misyon.
Ang Misyon Inc. was established by First Philippine
Holdings Corporation and
ABS-CBN Corporation in
2012. It was inspired by the
El Sistema of Venezuelan visionary Jose Antonio Abreu,
who thought of setting up an
after-school music program for
children from disadvantaged
families.
Just like El Sistema, Ang
Misyon’s goal is to “help
eradicate poverty in the Philippines through social change,
simultaneously enhancing the
country’s identity by creating
career paths in classical music
performance and redeveloping its arts and culture scene.”
It also established the Sistema
for the Filipino Youth, the local
version of El Sistema.
The OFY performed Syncopated Clock, “In the Hall of the
Mountain King” from the Peer
Gynt Suite of Edvard Grieg,
and “Les Toreadors” from Carmen Suite by Georges Bizet.
The other highlights of the
event include “Excerpts from
West Side Story” by Bernstein,
“Mindanao Sketches” by Antonio Buenaventura and “Allegro
con brio” from Symphony No. 5
by Beethoven.
There were also performances by Chi-Ying Hung, piano;
Jade Rubis Riccio, soprano;
Malvin Beethoven Macasaet,
tenor; Thristan Mendoza, marimba; Ang Misyon cofounder
Jovianney Emmanuel Cruz,
piano; and Brian Berino, piano.
Gerard Salonga, musical director and conductor of ABSCBN P.O., and Olivier Ochanine, conductor of the PPO and
head conductor of orchestras in
Ang Misyon’s visiting mentors
program, shaped the music for
the evening’s performances.
A question presented during
the event was: how can classical
music relieve a country like the
Philippines from poverty?
For Bernstein, music simply
nurtures a child’s life and trains
him for flexibility and the ability to connect ideas, which are
requisites in today’s jobseekers.
“In other parts of the world,
educators are coming to the
same conclusions about the
value of the arts in stimulating thinking in school-age
children,” said Bernstein. “It’s
creating new audiences in
a very large scale. The more
youth orchestra programs there
are, the more teachers of music
you will need. The more these
new audiences are exposed to
orchestral music, the greater
the demand will be for more
orchestral concerts.
“All of this will not happen overnight. But take a
look at Venezuela, where El
Sistema started 40 years ago.
Today there are half a million
children participating in youth
orchestras all over the country.
And the parents, friends and
relatives are all being exposed
to concertgoing on a regular
basis. There is a huge interest
in classical music. This scenario
is slowly but surely being replicated all over the world,” she
added.

The round table discussion
aimed to gather leaders from

that links climate resilience,
sustainable energy and health
equity.
In his welcome remarks,
Dr. Rodel Lasco, OML Center scientific director and a

Climate Change, emphasized
the importance of health in the
broader climate and energy discourse. He cited a recent World
Health Organization (WHO)
report stating that “climate
change is expected to cause approximately 250,000 additional
deaths per year between 2030
and 2050.”
Dr. Renzo Guinto, HCWHAsia’s Healthy Energy Initiative campaigner, noted the roles
of the health sector in the cli-
mate-energy nexus, which are,
in terms of climate adaptation,
to monitor the health impacts
of climate change through robust surveillance systems, and
to build resilient health systems
responsive to these impacts.
“For mitigation, the health
sector needs to advocate to
other sectors for mitigation
measures that have co-benefits
to health, such as shifting from
coal to clean energy….,’” Dr.
Guinto added.
He referred to the “Health
in All Policies” approach being
promoted by WHO as a useful
framework for addressing the
climate-energy-health nexus
and called for the adoption of
health impact assessments in
the evaluation of energy projects.
The event is part of a series of activities to build momentum for HCWH-Asia’s

which aims to mobilize the
health sector to play a central
role in advocating for a move
away from fossil fuel-based
power generation.
At present, the initiative is

the late 1960s to the 1980s.
Clippings and cutouts from
magazines, product wrappers,
drawings and sketches combined with BenCab’s handwriting were exhibited together with
postcards, posters and print folios. These show the early beginnings of his Larawan, Japanese

OML@85
A celebration of life
THE 85th birthday celebration
of Oscar M. Lopez (OML),
Lopez Group chairman emeritus, was nothing short of a celebration of life. It is a life that
is both amazing and inspiring.
And it is a life that continues to
draw ohhs and ahhs even as it
gives younger people something
of an ideal to aspire for as their
years speed by.
OML, as we fondly know
him in the Lopez Group, relishes the company of close family, associates and friends. This is
why the nearly 500 people that
afternoon are those he described
in his thank-you speech as having “been with me through my
journey all these years.”
Registration was set to start
at 5 p.m., but people started
coming in early. Guests were
a veritable who’s who in local
society but, best of all, they were
OML’s longtime friends. Many
were wheelchair-bound. There
was Socorro Paterno (widow
of former Sen. Ting Paterno),
who suddenly passed away two
days after, and Erlinda Fabella
de Carolis from OML’s student
days in the US.
Other guests were Carmen Vargas, who according to
daughter Tina, owed OML

as was Pauline Paredes-Sicam,
another ex-Chronicle journalist.
Senate President Franklin
Drilon, an Ilonggo like OML,
led political leaders at the
occasion. Speaker Feliciano
Belmonte, a former Chronicle
reporter who showed OML
the ropes on the police beat,
was there too. DILG Sec. Mar
Roxas took time out to be present. But mostly, there were the
past and present executives of
Lopez companies with whom
OML had interacted during
his watch as Group CEO.
Standing ovation
OML was met several times
with a standing ovation, from
the time he entered the filledto-capacity Rizal Ballroom
of Makati Shangri-La, to the
time he gave his response at the
end of the program.
The program emphasized
the values dear to OML of
family, loyalty and love of country. OML’s love of music was
highlighted with the rendition
of songs from the Lopez musical “Undaunted” as well as other
memorable songs that capture
the OML spirit. Two of these
songs, “Defying Gravity” from
the musical “Wicked” and “We
Share a Dream (The Philippines
is for Filipinos)” by Noypi and
the Juan dela Cruz band were
rendered by Lea Salonga. The
ABS-CBN
Philharmonic
Orchestra and the Orchestra
of the Filipino Youth gave an
outstanding performance of
music that evening.
Importance of family,
bonding
Federico R. Lopez, who
now heads the First Holdings
Group, emphasized the importance of family and bonding in
his welcome speech.
Piki, as he is known in the
Group, talked about his growing-up years and how OML
inculcated the family values
and love of music that were
important to his own life. Piki
spoke of how OML taught him
the value of lifetime learning in
“an environment that encouraged learning in so many ways
beyond school.”
There was music, and books,
and how the OML family was
“always around nature, the outdoors, trees, mountains, the sea
and animals.”
Best of all, Piki related how
OML taught them how to regard their material wealth with
a strong sense of responsibility.
Interview with Ninoy
The revelation of the evening
was the story of how Piki had
this interview with former Sen.
Ninoy Aquino who was then in
exile in the US.
Here is Piki’s account:
“There was something at the
end of the meeting that struck
me. He said, ‘You know I had
quite a tussle with your Lolo
Eñing sometime in 1968.’ I
asked, ‘What about?’ He said,
‘Well, it was over the extravagance of your Lolo’s ruby anniversary celebration with the
champagne fountains, flying in
European royalty and American
entertainers and all. I just felt at
the time it was not proper for a
country mired in so much poverty. But well,’ Ninoy shrugged,
‘he believed God gave him the
opportunity to make a lot of
money and so he felt he could
spend it however he wished.’’’
Piki continued to recall
that “upon returning home to
Manila that Christmas, I mentioned the comment of Ninoy
to my Mom and she expressed
something Dad never revealed
before: ‘We never told you this
but your Dad felt the same way
and voiced these same concerns
and sentiments to your Lolo.
Doing so strained their relationship, and later resulted in
his exclusion from a subsequent
trip to Hong Kong acknowledging everyone who helped in
the success of the celebration.’

‘Many unconnected dots’
“Knowing how much he
admired his father, I know that
must have hurt him immeasurably. But the story closed so
many unconnected dots in my
mind about Dad. It exemplified
his conviction that wealth can
empower you to do great things,
but it also carried great responsibilities and he never believed
that our happiness should
ever have to evolve around its
ephemeral trappings.”
Piki’s revelation connected
a lot of dots too in the minds
of many of OML’s friends,
executives and business associates who many have found it
difficult to reconcile OML as
they knew him and that controversial party of his father.
Now they know.

Stay hydrated as temperatures expected to soar
ON April 18, the temperature
soared to 36.2°C (or 97.16°F),
the hottest day in Metro Manila
so far in 2015, according to the
Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
On May 3, a heat index of as
high as 40°C was expected to
roast various parts of the country,
the state weather bureau said.
Summer is only halfway over,
so we’ll surely be in for more
of the same—or, worse, even
more superheated days. Thus,
the most important thing is to
stay hydrated. Our bodies are
about 75% water and blood is
nearly 80% water; when water
is not replenished, blood thickens, forcing the heart to work
harder and increasing the risk
of heart attack.
According to the American
Heart Association, when the
temperature and humidity are
both above 21.1°C (or 70°F),
we have entered the dehydration danger zone and it becomes
necessary to sip water frequently
and drink before, during and after vigorous activity.
To maintain a healthy fluid balance while in the dehydration
zone, the following suggestions
may help:
1. Keep a large water bottle
handy to encourage you to
drink water.
2. Be sure to eat fruits and
vegetables daily, not only to stay
hydrated, but also to maintain
optimal health.
3. Have a glass of water before each meal.
4. After each trip to the restroom, drink a glass of water to
replenish your fluids.
5. Set reminders on your
phone, watch or email to drink
every hour.
6. Add a slice of lemon,
lime and/or mint to your water
to give it some flavor without
adding any extra calories. (Excerpted from www.medicaldaily.

To celebrate OML’s 85th birthday
Go the distance with the
chairman emeritus on May 9!
IF you think you’re over the
hill, health wise, then remember
that Oscar M. Lopez (OML)
climbed his first mountain at
age 73.
That was Mt. Pinatubo in
2003, and the Lopez Group
chairman emeritus was accompanied by most of his family,
including wife Connie. He has
summited at least one mountain
each in the three major island
groups: Mt. Arayat, Mt. Pulag,
Mt. Apo and Mt. Kanlaon.
But he topped that on his
81st birthday in 2011, when
he reached the peak of Mt.
Kinabalu—the tallest mountain in the Malay Archipelago
at 14,000 feet—with Lopez
Group executives and some of
his children.
At the Economic Journalists
Association of the Philippines
Wellness Fair last year, OML
told the reporters: “There are
some lessons I want to share
with you. One is that it is never
too late to start being physical.
Two, you must have the determination to keep your body
strong and your health in tiptop

Prolonged sun exposure
can
lead to pterygium
By Charizze Henson
MARK Andrade, a seafarer,
suffered from an eye condition
called pterygium.
“I had a growth from the corner of my eye, over my cornea.
I couldn’t see well so it affected
my performance at work. It was
also really uncomfortable—it
was itchy and it felt like there
was sand in my eye.”
Pterygium is often characterized by pink, fleshy tissue
growth on the surface of the
eye. It usually covers the white
part of the eye closer to the
nose and may extend into the
cornea.
In Filipino, it is known as
“pugita” because its shape resembles that of an octopus.
While pterygium progresses
slowly, it may continue growing
until it covers the center of the
eye. A large pterygium can also
distort the shape of the cornea
and lead to astigmatism.
Says Asian Eye Institute cornea and external disease specialist
Dr. Sharlene Noguera: “Pterygium is commonly associated with
Interactive
prolonged exposure to the sun. It
is common among people who
spend too much time outdoors
and more often seen in men and
in patients ages 20 to 40.”
Symptoms of pterygium
include persistent redness or
inflammation, foreign body
sensation, tearing, dryness and
itching. Lubricating eye drops
or ointments may be given to
patients to reduce redness, irritation or inflammation. Surgery may be recommended if
the growth is large enough to
cover the eye.
Dr. Noguera advises patients
to always wear UV-protected
sunglasses and use hats or umbrellas when going outdoors. A
yearly visit to an ophthalmologist will also be good to monitor the condition of the eyes.

THE
summer sun is
at its hottest and
most intense, calling for nonstop air- conditioners or electric
fans at the maximum settings. To get further away from the
heat, families and friends flock to places like Baguio, Tagaytay,
Boracay and Palawan.
Eating in places with low temperatures increases one’s enjoyment gastronomically, and when you partner this with a very
interesting place in one of the coldest places in Luzon, then you
might simply call it pure bliss!
Sagada in Mountain Province is located six hours from Baguio.
It prides itself on being a haven for trekking, spelunking and nature
hiking. Compared to other popular tourist destinations, this place is
a must-see especially for nature lovers, and the food is great too.
Here are some food stops that visitors might want to look
into.
First is Yoghurt House, whose best sellers are Java chicken
with salad, and the banana with strawberry yoghurt.
Another notable restaurant is Misty Lodge and Café, a place
famous for its burgers and pizzas. Try the bacon lover’s burger,

JUST how hot is Summer 2015? It’s
so hot that for the first time ever, says
a woman in my apartment building,
their air-con is on 24/7; to avoid bill
shock, she tripled the allotted budget
for the electricity bill. Their water consumption has also increased, which of
course is always a good thing.
With various heat illnesses hovering on the horizon, we can’t stress this
enough—hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, especially if you can’t avoid going outside.
And remember, the enemy is not only
high temperatures, but extreme heat
coupled with such factors as strenuous
physical activity, dehydration, and alcohol and caffeine intake.
What’s your game plan for these red-hot days? For those on
summer vacation or on leave from their jobs, this is the perfect time
to look into G • Eco Tours.
In 2013, we were introduced to G Stuff, which offers food and
cosmetics lines made from clean and natural local ingredients. This
year, ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc. executive
director Gina Lopez has come up with another out-of-the-box concept in G • Eco Tours: vacation packages that combine eco-friendliness with fun and adventure!
Currently offering five destinations and with more to come, G •
Eco Tours just might change the way we “do vacations.” Gina Lopez
and the G • Eco Tours team sat down with LopezLink to discuss the
whats, whens, wheres and whys of this exciting new venture.
The celebration of our chairman emeritus Oscar M. Lopez’s
