HOW DO YOU GET HEATING
AND HOT WATER FROM AIR?
Introducing the Panasonic
AQUAREA Air Source Heat Pump
Aquarea High Performance
An AQUAREA air source heat pump captures heat
from the air and transfers this heat into the home via
a compressor and condenser. By applying a little more
energy from electricity a heat pump can raise the
temperature of this heat energy to the level required in
the home. Heat Pumps offer an energy efficient way of
providing heating in the home, as they acquire 78% of
their heat energy from free and renewable sources.
From 3 to 16kW
For a house with low temperature radiators
or under-floor heating, our high performance
Aquarea HP is an ideal solution, which can work
as a standalone unit or be combined with an
existing gas or oil-fired heating system.
This new solution is ideal for low energy
consumption homes.
Water output is at 25-550C

Where do I site my air source heat pump?
The heat pump must be placed a minimum of 300mm from a wall , on a plinth so as snow drifting cannot
occur in front of the machine. You must also leave clearance in front of the machine, do not locate it in
front of a wall or fence. It is advisable to locate the machine so as it is not facing directly in towards a door or
window as the air coming from the fan is very cold when machine is in full operation.
-15ºC
Aquarea T-CAP and High Performance have
extremely high efficiency even at -150C
Where can I locate the heat pump control panel?
The controller comes with a 15m lead which is coiled up in the heat pump. It can be left in the heat pump or it
can be sited in your dwelling within the 15m or further if required using an extension cable.
Coefficient of Performance / COP
The Coefficient of Performance (or COP) is the efficiency ratio of
the amount of heating provided by a heat pump compared to the
energy consumed by the system. The higher the Coefficient of
Performance the more efficient the system.
AQUAREA
What are the hot water cylinder requirements with a heat pump?
Any type of cylinder can be used; copper, stainless steel or glass lined. The key component is the 3m2 or Hi
Gain coil which must be in any cylinder that you used with any heat pump. It would be desirable to have an
electrical immersion fitted also.

RENEWABLE
ENERGY
The efficiency of the Heat Pump is tested at 70C outside
temperature and 350C water temperature. The COP is normally
between 4.5 and 5. A COP of 4.74 means that the heat pump gives
out 4.74kW of heat energy for every 1 kW of electrical energy used.

How much space is needed in the boiler house?
Heat pumps normally require a footprint of 1m x 1m and are approx 2m high. All heat pumps also require a
buffer tank of approx 15 litres per kW so a typical 10kW heat pump requires a minimum of a 50/75 litre buffer.
The buffer tank needs a similar footprint as the heat pump.

How do I size or know what heat pump i need?
There are a number of pieces of information required to size a heat pump, a set of floor plans of the house,
type of construction, location of site, hot water requirement etc. Once we have those we can calculate size
using the Aquarea Software Package and produce a design, select a heat pump & give estimated running
costs and give estimated comparisons of carbon emissions and costs verses oil, gas etc.
1kW
HEAT
How do I get my heat pump commissioned & how much does it cost?
When your installer & electrician have completed their installation in full, complete the Panasonic
Pre-Commissioning Check List and send it into the branch in which you bought your heat pump. They will
book it in with the Commissioning Engineer to have it commissioned and validate your warranty. The cost of
commissioning is €250 plus VAT. (Subject to change please confirm with your branch).
What type of heating system works best with heat pumps?
The best system to use is one that works at low temperatures between 350C - 450C. Underfloor heating is
particularly suitable for use with the lower temperature water from heat pumps. The ideal solution if not using
under floor heating is to use aluminium radiators which operate efficiently with a flow temperature of 450C.
Standard panel radiators can also be used if they are designed correctly.
Free training and consultation for installers is available across our product range.

PAnasonic Aquarea Heat Pump Manager
The Panasonic Aquarea Heat Pump range uses a 2-pipe Y-Plan plumbing arrangement. What this means is that the heat
pump controls a motorised 3-port diverting valve and carries out space heating or domestic hot water production. This
allows for a low temperature heating system i.e. under floor heating or low temperature aluminium radiators, but still
allows for high attainable domestic hot water temperatures. The control of the heat pump can be done through the flow
temperature or as with a conventional system, a single room thermostat or multiple thermostats.
The Heat Pump Manager (HPM) is specially designed to ensure the
Aquarea heat pump systems deliver maximum performance and
comfort allowing accurate temperature control based on the outdoor
temperature.
This simple plumbing arrangement below illustrates a typical domestic application, in this case under floor heating on one
floor (zone), low temperature radiators on a second floor (zone) and domestic hot water.

Sample Hydraulic Installation with Water & Heating
The HPM is the ideal solution if it is necessary to combine multiple heat
pumps and or use a secondary heat source such as solar, gas or oil fired
boilers with the heat pump which makes heat pumps suitable for larger
properties when a large 3 phase unit is not suitable or retro-fit projects
where the existing heating system is maintained. The HPM control
will interface between the different heat sources and utilises the most
appropriate depending on the user preferences.
The HPM also allows for
remote access and monitoring
over the web using Panasonic’s
unique internet applications.
Panasonic have created hundreds of HPM schematics which are available on the Panasonic ProClub website
and the Heat Merchants Technical Support & Design Team can assist in the choosing the best option for your
project requirements.

Solar Photovoltaic Panels and Heat Pump Manager
Panasonic has developed an innovative algorithm for its HPM (Heat Pump Manager) which activates the
heat pump based on the energy produced by the photovoltaic system, the consumption requirement of
the house and the heating demand of the house. The Heat Pump will take the electricity generated by the
solar PV system into consideration for the heating system and the domestic hot water production, without
reducing comfort in the house. Configuration of the HPM with the PV system is easy and can increase the
usage of free electricity by up to 120%.

Sirius Aluminium Radiators
Sirius die cast aluminium radiators are ideally
suited for pairing with heat pumps, solar systems
and condensing boilers as they are an efficient
heat emitter using the lower temperature water.
The Sirius range is light weight, have a low water
content and a quicker heat up time for increased
efficiency and effectiveness.
Underfloor heating works efficiently with all heat sources
but is particularity suitable for use with lower temperature
water from heat pumps. Comfort is a key benefit of
underfloor heating which can provide for individual
or multiple room temperature control and provides a
uniform temperature throughout the room. It also assists in
elimination of moisture and damp, reduces dust mites and
allergens and increases room space by eliminating the need
for radiators.
Manufactured in Italy for Heat Merchants by
one of Europe’s leading Aluminium Radiator
companies, the stylish, aesthetic finish coupled
with the range of heights and lengths ensure
the Sirius will suit both new build and retrofit
applications.
Polycomfort Mat Panel (Wet) System
This mat panel system can accommodate 14x2
or 16x2mm pipe and can be easily adapted to
any size and geometry of room. The user friendly
contour of the panel and overlapping press stud
system allows for a fast, secure and efficient
install of the underfloor heat piping. It meets all
standard acoustic insulation, thermal insulation,
thermal performance and fire protection
requirements. Suitable for use with cement,
self-leveling and thin-bed screed.
Tube Holding Bar Rail (Wet) System
Under floor heating pipe is secured to the subfloor in a predetermined piping pattern prior to
pouring of the screed. Initially the floor is covered
with insulation sheeting and the rail holding bars
are placed at approximately 1m intervals on top
of the insulation. The rail and other sections
of the piping are held in place through the use
of staples. As with Polycomfort this system is
suitable for use with cement, self-leveling and
thin-bed screed.
Heatrack Wooden Panel (Dry) System
This patented concrete free underfloor heating
system features 1.22m long 12mm thick panels
backed with aluminium. They are neat, fast
and easy to install and are ideal for new builds
and retrofit applications as they can work
with all floor surfaces. Heatrack responds to
temperature change quicker than concrete,
uses lower temperature water and has
reduced energy costs in comparison to other
underfloor heating systems.
