Message from the Manager
D
ear TCC Family,
Happy Holidays! The decorations are up and so is our club’s holiday spirit. Reserve
some family time at any of our holiday events designed specifically with you in
mind. Making memor ies is one of many attr ibutes associated with member ship at
Toledo Country Club.
Carl Miller
General Manager
Your support of the club is what makes TCC so special. Whether it is for family,
friends and/or colleagues, keep Toledo Country Club at the forefront of your mind when deciding to host an
event. Upon a simple phone call or short email, we are prepared to handle all the details and make you proud.
The cumulative effect of members utilizing their club is a catalyst for its own success.
Your feedback is always appreciated. We continue to receive many positive comments from both members
and guests about their “Toledo Country Club experience”…everything from great overall reviews about our
golf course, food and staff to a shared personal story about how the club made their day special…for which
we are grateful. I want to express my appreciation to the entire management team for their continued efforts
in providing excellence in the products and services we offer. A special thank you to Don Kotnik for his help
and professionalism during my first golf season at the club. It will be nice to see him from time to time next
season in his role of Golf Professional Emeritus.
Please find an article from Tony Searl, our new Head Golf Professional, included in this newsletter. It gives a
short background on his personal journey that led him to Toledo Country Club. The membership received a
copy of his professional credentials (cover letter and resume) during our hiring process. Tony is very excited
to be part of a club that balances tradition and innovation when serving its membership. Join me in
welcoming our new Head Golf Professional to the club.
In planning for next year, I am really excited for the opportunities in view at Toledo Country Club. On behalf
of the management team, we look forward to 2015 and all that it will provide your family. Until then, enjoy
your holiday season and have a happy New Year.
Best regards,
Carl J. Miller

Introducing...
I
am honored to have been chosen as the next golf professional at Toledo Country
Club and I look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence in golf operations that
Mr. Kotnik created and carried out for the last 44 years. That type of longevity is a
credit to both Mr. Kotnik and the club. It is one of the aspects that attracted me to the
position in the first place. I can’t wait to get started.
Tony Searl
Head Golf
My wife Tina and I grew up in the Green Bay, Wisconsin area. We moved to
Professional
Indianapolis, Indiana in March of 2004, when I accepted a golf professional position at
The Country Club of Indianapolis. After becoming Head Golf Professional at CCI, we decided to get married
in our home town in January of 2012. It seemed like a good time to have a wedding in Green Bay.
We are both extremely happy and excited for this new chapter in our lives. We are very much looking
forward to moving to Toledo and being a part of Toledo Country Club.
Carl has been nice enough to set me up with a club email address already. If anyone has any questions,
comments or would just like to say hello, you can reach me at [email protected] until I get up there full time
in January.
Wishing you all the best during the holidays. I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

T urf News
S
ince it looks like we are going to have a winter similar to last year, we have
decided to be proactive this fall and attempt to reduce the possibility of winter
damage. After attending numerous seminars on reducing the chances of winter
damage, there seems to be three key areas. These areas include improving surface
drainage, eliminating any shade issues and topdressing heavily to protect the plant.
Tim Glorioso
Director of Golf
course Operations
Surface drainage is hard to correct without reshaping the greens, however we will create channels on our
problem greens that will allow for the water to flow off the green. We will also make sure these areas are free
of snow and ice to reduce the possibility of standing water. As for the shade issue, we removed several key
trees this past season that contributed to the damage we saw last spring. Finally, we added a heavy layer of
sand topdressing to protect the crown of the plant. The crown is where everything happens in a turf grass
plant, all root and shoot growth begin in the crown. This sand layer helps to protect the crown from extreme
temperatures and drying winds.
The ultimate goal is to come out of spring with minimal damage. Unfortunately, when you are dealing with
weather, no matter how hard you prepare you may still have the perfect storm.
Tim Glorioso, CGCS
Director of Golf Course Operations
