''Time flies when you're having fun"- it's a cliche, but
it's true. By the time you read this message I will be
wrappbIg up my first full year at Temple Emanuel (I
can;t believe it myself1). In this year I never lacked
1 fo~ excitement, or something fun and interesting to
do. (this tends to happen when you teach 7th, 8th and
9th graders}. I can't help but remember the very first
Shabbat Eric and I celebrated at Temple Emanuel. It
was July 4th and it was hot outside, but inside the airconditioned chapel we received a very warm reception.
Fortunately, the month of June continues to bring energy to all of us at
Temple Emanuel. In fact we have three very special Shabbatot (plural of Shabbat) to celebrate. On June 11 the Men's Club will lead Shabbat services and on
June 18 we honor all members who have been part of the Temple Emanuel family for eighteen years or more! Finally, on June 25 we sadly say farewell to our
beloved Cantor Robin Sherman. All of these services prolnise to be meaningful
and special.
The Israeli author Ahad Ha'am wrote, "More than the Jews have kept
Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jews." There might be many ways to interpret
Ahad Ha'am's words, but I think it teaches us that Shabbat is a special time for
us as a community to come together- we can share the joys and frustrations of
the week gone by and share the peace that Shabbat brings us. We look forward
to sharing a joyous Shabbat with you!

You know what that
means.
The "Shore",
barbecuing in the back
yard, the swim club, family vacations, kids at camp so Mom and
Dad (and probably the kids too!)
can regain some of their sanity,
and of course Temple Emanuel
membership! Now I know what you're thinking ''where does Temple membership fit in with my other
fabulous plans (or lack thereof) for the summer", or
alternatively, ''why is he bugging me about Temple
membership when we are obviously already Temple
Emanuel members." Well, no need to wonder any
longer, just read on!
It is my most sincere hope, along with that of my fellow
lay leaders, rabbis, and professional staff, that you
enjoy and benefit from your membership at our
wonderful synagogue. This "team" at Temple Emanuel
works diligently all year to provide the types of educational, religious, social, and other programs which
meets your needs (if we don't please let me know!).
While we recognize that every program may not interest everyone, our goal is to present a wide diversity of
activities so that there is something for everyone. Your
continued membership in our Temple family is of paramount importance to us and we are blessed to have
approximately 1000 families who call Temple Emanuel
"home".
As I am sure you can understand, membership in our
synagogue is the foundation for our strength, both
spiritually and financially. This is true for any
religious organization. This is why we devote so much
of our energy towards trying to attract and retain
members. We obviously think we have an incredible
temple and want to share every aspect of it, including
the Pre-School, with everyone who is looking to affiliate with a synagogue (and especially those who aren't
but should be!). This is where you, the congregation,
have a very important role to play. I firmly believe
that one of the key factors that people rely upon in
deciding what synagogue to belong to is the advice of
friends, neighbors and relatives. It is also more likely
that folks look to make a decision about where to affiliate in the early summer than any other time of the
year. This is due to educational programs starting in
the fall, along with the High Holy Days.
As such, one of the most important things you can do
for Temple Emanuel is spreading the word about how
fantastic membership is to your friends, neighbors and
relatives. Invite them to a service, or a social function,
or just to come by the Temple to take a tour and meet
the staff. If you have any questions just call the
Temple office. Remember, your good words count far
more than any marketing material we could ever
develop! So please, help us keep Temple Emanuel
strong by espousing the benefits of membership. It
should be right up there on your list of "things to do
this summer", along with keeping plenty of SPF 30
suntan lotion around. Have a great and safe summer.

Shabbat Morning Torah Study
Our Shabbat Morning Torah Study group meets throughout the year. Newcomers to
Torah Study are encouraged to come. We read selections from the weekly Torah
portion together and have a lively and engaging discussion. We will meet at 9:15 in
the library. Come be part of our study community.

Memo from
W
e don't live in an isolated, compartmentalized world. Rather, we are a
community. At Temple Emanuel, our community is strengthened each
time we work together, pray together, learn together and grow
together. Sometimes, the results of our efforts are immediately obvious,
such as the remarkable success of our Reach for the Stars weekend of events. Other
times, the results of our efforts are like ripples in a lake; subtle and faint, with the
eventual outcome or direction unknown.
So is the case with many of the projects our synagogue participated in this
year. Who will ever know the eventual result of helping the Israeli artists to sell
their works? Watching 16 men have an Adult Bar Mitzvah? Sharing our resources by supporting our winter
coat and hat drive, our bicycle drive and our sporting goods drive in our attempt to help our Camden
neighbors? Who can tell the outcome of sharing a Shabbat service with your family, helping with casserole
cooking for the homeless or attending a TEFTY event? Who is to know which ripples will become waves - and
what impact these waves will have on each of our lives and the lives of generations to come?
I read a quote recently, attributed to Joseph Epstein of the Association for Volunteer Administration. It reads:

We do not choose to be born.
We do not choose our parents.
Or, our times or country of birth,
Or the circumstances of our upbringing.
We do not - most of us - choose to die
But within all this realm of choicelessness
We do choose how we shall live Courageously or in cowardice,
Honorably or dishonorably,
With purpose or adrift. .
We decide what is important and what is trivial
What makes us significant is what we can do,
Or refuse to do.
We decide and we choose
And so we give definition to ourselves.
How can we help you give definition to yourself? How can we help you find your path? Your way? How can
we help you make Temple Emanuel and your Judaism a more central part of your life and the life of your

ur Religious School Students proved the power of small actions over the course
of last year. In the form of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and a dollar bill
every so often, the Religious School collected over $3000 in Tzedakah money.
The students, through classroom discussions and an all-school vote, donated the
money to a number of different organizations. Several of the classes used the money collected to buy supplies for community service projects. Our students helped in Tikkun Olam,
healing the world, one nickel at a time, by donating to the following organizations:

Food Bank of Southern New Jersey's Bagging Summer Hunger Campaign - Our 7th
and 9th graders created summer lunch bags for children who receive free school lunches
during the school year with money collected as Tzedakah. Other classes made general
donations.
• Jewish National Fund - Money donated to the largest environmental agency in Israel.
Magen David Adom - Money donated to Israel's emergency medical, health, blood and

disaster services.
•
Casserole Cooking - Several classes made casseroles to be donated to local
organizations with money collected as Tzedakah ..
CHAI - Money donated to Concern for Animal in Israel.
ILAN -Money donated to the Israel Foundation for Handicapped Children, which cares for the needs of over
17,000 children and adults.
Neve Michael - Money donated to this residential home for over 300 Israeli children at risk.
Aid for Friends - Several classes made breakfast bags for poor, home-bound seniors in Philadelphia with
money collected as Tzedakah.
Ronald McDonald House - Money donated to this "home-away-from-home" for families of seriously ill children
who are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.
BookMates - Our kindergarteners in Joanne Rosen's class gift-wrapped books for disadvantaged children
with money collected as Tzedakah.
AHAVA - Money donated to this organization that helps disadvantaged Israeli students learn English.
Lifeline for the Elderly - Money donated to this organization that provides a meaningful and nurturing environment for the elderly in Jerusalem.

North American Council on Ethiopian Jewry - Debra Berger's 3rd and 5 Grade classes donated well over
1500 meals to Ethiopian Jewish children living in Israel.
Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation - This organization supports research and education into this disease.
Children of the Americas - Margery Ross' Hebrew class donated their Tzedakah to this organization which
brings children from around the world to the United States for medical operations that they can not receive in
their homelands.
Help Plan the Adult and Family Education Program for Next Year
The education offerings at Temple Emanuel are vast. We need your advice and suggestions to make them as
meaningful and interesting as possible. Get involved and join an education committee. For more information about
any of these committees, contact the committee chair or Rabbi Cohen, [email protected], 489-0035.
The following committees could use your help:

Adult Education Committee, chaired by Irene Kauffman and Robin Miller. Upcoming meeting is June 9 at
7:30 pm. Help organize our Adult Education Program for next year. Come with your ideas, suggestions and
feedback. If you have an idea for a course, we can make it happen. This meeting will take place at a committee member's home. Call for directions and information.

Family Education Committee, chaired by Jessica Manelis and Tracey Rebock. Upcoming meeting on June 15
at 7:00 pm. The Family Education Committee at Temple Emanuel brings you the Chocolate Seder, BleSSing
of the Pets, Sukkot Hayride, Shabbat Around the World, Sukkah Hop, Tu B'Shevat Seder, PJ Havdalah
Party, and much more. Join us and make the fun and learning happen again next year. Come with your
ideas and suggestions for making Jewish learning family friendly.

Jonnetta B. Cole once said, "The ultimate expression of generosity is not in giving of what you have,
but in giving of who you are." At the end of this month, we will be saying good-bye to someone who has given
so much of herself to the Pre-School of Temple Emanuel.
Throughout the years, Julie Kratchman touched
the lives and hearts of all of the children who have
passed through our doors. She has earned the respect
and love of those children, their parents, and all the
teachers who have been fortunate enough to know her.
In short, she has given her all to make The Pre-School at
Temple Emanuel a wonderful, child-centered, safe,
wholesome environment in which we welcome the youngest members into the Temple Emanuel community.

The Pre-School at Temple Emanuel, known for its loving and caring environment, has flourished and
grown under Julie's expert direction. She has provided love and guidance to our children for more than a
decade. Her commitment to providing our children with a quality Jewish education is to be admired.
We are one congregation, one family - which is clearly reflected in the way Julie Kratchman professionally and with love, ran _Temple Emanuel's early childhood program.
We wish Julie happiness and success as she continues on her life's path. And we will miss her dearly.
For more than two decades, Cantor Robin Sherman's voice has given us chills and inspiration. Her smile has
brought us warmth. Her caring nature has nurtured our children and touched our hearts and souls.
Robin has touched countless lives as part of the clergy team, officiating at baby namings, weddings,
b'nai mitzvah and funerals. She holds a special place in our collective memories, as she shared the High Holy
Days, Passover Seders, Sisterhood Retreats, special Shabbatot and many other simchas and memorable events with
us and the greater South Jersey community.

Robin's beautiful voice has graced Carnegie Hall
and the Kimmel Center, but none amongst the audience in
those locations can match the experience of sharing
Robin's voice in prayer and in song.
Cantor Robin Sherman has been a valued and talented member of our congregation for an
amazing twenty two years. Now, she must leave us to follow her husband to an exciting new life in
San Francisco.
Voltaire wrote, "Appreciation is a wonderful thing; it makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well." We will always appreciate Robin and the beauty she brought to our
worship experience, the memory of which will live on in all of us for many years to
come. Our best wishes to Robin and Ron as they begin a new chapter oftheir
lives in California.

SUMMER SHABBA T SERVICES

s the summer approaches, the senior
board members and I have a sense of
satisfaction that we are ending a season
that has presented a mix of interesting
and varied programs. It was our intent to have
something of interest for everybody; and it is our
feeling that we accomplished that mission.
On Wednesday, June 16, we will culminate our program season. We have saved the
very best for last. We look forward to our guest
speaker, Rabbi Jerry David. In addition, our
boarq. .will prepare and present special desserts and
refreshments.

As the year ends, I would like to thank
the senior board for their support, their interest,
all their effort and involvement. It made this year
very special for us all.

Our Friday Evening Shabbat Services will continue
throughout the summer months. Services will be held at
8 pm with the exception of our Family Kabbalat Service
which will be held at 6 pm on the first Friday of each
month. Tot Shabbat will be held on Friday, July 16 and
Friday, August 20 at 7:00 pm. A schedule of services will
be sent to you shortly.

29 in the social hall. This is our most important drive
because as donors take vacation in the summer, blood
needs increase. Please take time out of your summer

he Social Action Committee was very busy this year with wonderful projects that helped so many. The
approach of summer doesn't mean a slow-down in the work we do. Here are some activities we will be
continuing throughout the warmer months - and beyond:
•
Drives: Thanks to everyone who supported the various drives that we sponsored. I know it's the summer,
but we are continuing to support TEFTY's collection of sleeping bags for Project Warmth. Please drop them
off at the synagogue to be distributed to homeless people in Philadelphia.
•
Blood Drive: The next blood drive is scheduled for 7/29. Blood supplies drop particularly low in the
summer, so this is a crucial time to donate. Contact Bruce Sachais ([email protected]) for
more information.
•
Tzedakah Collective: Thanks to Men's Club for their generous support of the Tzedakah Collective through
their golf tournament. The fund has over $5,500 dollars to be distributed to various charities. The tentative
date for the Tzedakah Fund Family Walk is October 17. Please consider being a sponsor for this special
event.
•
Israel Support: Show support for Israel by going to the NFTY-YOFI (National Federation of Temple YouthYouth Organized for Israel), internet site http\\www.rac.org/home-frame.htmland follow the directions for

Where Jews Pray
an you believe that it is June already? Time just keeps moving faster and faster. Before you know it
the beginning ofthe next school year and the High Holy Days will be right around the corner. As
most of you know, I am the last one that wants to rush through the summer months. It is my favorite time of the year. I just love the weather and the longer days.
Summertime is the time that many families choose to take a nice relaxing summer vacation. Families also
enjoy the summer months to be able to slow down and take the time to spend extra quality "family time" together. We all tend to be so busy during the months of the school year, that we don't even realize how much
we missed.
If you are taking a vacation out of the area, please take this opportunity to visit an out of town synagogue on
Shabbat. (Don't forget to call them first to get the time of their service). You will find it to be such a rewarding experience.
If it is not possible to attend a Shabbat service in a synagogue, it is most important for you to remember
that Jews can pray anywhere. This is beautifully expressed in Midrash Tehillim: "When you pray, pray in the
synagogue of your city; if you are unable to pray in the synagogue, pray in your field; if you are unable to pray
in your field, pray in your home; if you are unable to pray in your home, pray on your couch; and if you are unable to pray on your couch, meditate in your heart."
Of course, while in the area, please remember that Shabbat does not go on vacation here at Temple Emanuel. We
have a Friday night service 52 weeks of the year. Check your summer service schedule for more information.
No matter what you do during this summer break, have a good one, a safe one and remember that we are
always here for you at Temple Emanuel.

pring is always a busy time for Sisterhood, and this year was no exception. We had our Annual Retreat in
Cape May (co-chaired by Sheila Stern and Linda Sachais), a wonderful weekend of spirituality and friendship
led by Rabbi Newburge and Rabbi Cohen. We had a successful plant sale, coordinated by DJ Whitley, along
with a sale of Roses from Israel, capably handled by Randi Eisen. Later in May, we had a beautiful dinner
and program in honor of Cantor Sherman (Debra Berger and Stephanie Ross, Co-Chairs), which included music,
prayer and fond memories. Sisterhood Shabbat followed that same evening (Kelly Fineman and Laurie Hohwald,
Co-chairs), with the theme of "Honoring the Women of Temple Emanuel." The installation of the 2004-2005 Sisterhood Board also took place that evening. On behalf of Sisterhood, I want to thank the many women who made these
wonderful events possible. I regret that space does not permit me to mention everyone by name.

It is time to finish out the year with one of our most anticipated events: Sisterhood Bingo Night! Come one, come
all, on June 3 at 6:30 pm for food, fun and fabulous prizes! Bonnie Sharps, our Chair, and her committee have taken
this event to a new level, with a clever theme of "Classic TV." Watch and see how the theme plays out through the
evening. There will be ten rounds of games, with six cards in each round, all for only $18 in advance, $20 at the
door. There will be special games and a 50/50 sold separately, with fabulous prizes! Round up your friends and come
out to party!
I probably sound like a "broken record" (do our children even know what that means?) as I extol the joys and benefits of being part of Sisterhood . But it is that time of year again when the women of Temple Emanuel will be deciding
whether to join Sisterhood for the coming year. For many, the decision to join is easy. Those of you who have
joined faithfully each year are the backbone of our Sisterhood and we are grateful for your support. Others hesitate to
join for a variety of reasons. Some feel it is not worthwhile because they don't have time to get involved or come to
programs. But simply by joining, you are helping Sisterhood support the Religious School and provide other programs
and benefits throughout the Temple. Others actually think they are members, uJltil they discover that their husbands
did not sign them up! (Sorry, guys, but you would be amazed how often I have heard that!) If you are hesitating,
please reconsider and become part of this diverse group of women. At $36.00 per year, it is truly a bargain. We are
making an effort to create a real benefit for members by charging them less for many of our programs throughout the
year. In addition, only members receive the Sisterhooa newsletter ("The Dish", edited by Jessica Manelis) and are eligible for tuition credit when purchasing from our Gift Card Program (run by Jessica Chasen). We are busy making
plans for another great year, so come and join us!

We have many traditions at Temple Emanuel. One ofthe traditions is The Men's Club. For the last 54 years
The Men's Club has played a significant role by promoting fellowship, education and recreation for the men of
Temple Emanuel. The annual Men's Club Shabbat Service on June 11 will honor our past. Please join us on
June 11 as we recognize the leadership and contributions of our past presidents.
The past year has been very successful for The Men's Club. Our programs have covered many topics: men's
health issues, politics, Judaism, sports, Israel, wine tasting, parent/child bowling and a charitable golftournament. The attendance at these programs has been very strong and encouraging. The officers are currently working on the programs for the 200412005 year. We welcome your program ideas or suggestions.

It is amazing to know that energy and enthusiasm can continue to grow, even as the school year winds
down. Youth Group has given so much to so many of our Temple Emanuel teens that it is meaningful to hear
from these very teens in their own words:
•
Youth Group is about getting involved. It is about reaching goals. It is about getting your peers and
younger teens to attend events and activities because they are our future.
•
Youth Group is about being there for others when they are needed; it is about making new friends and
telling the old ones that you are there for them.
•
Youth Group is about learning how to be a role model for others, how to show everyone what they can
get out of being involved. It is about promoting community service programs, helping others.
•
Youth Group is about Jewish pride, seeing how it is really special to be Jewish, to feel spirituality and
purpose in all that you do.
All of these incredible thoughts were generated at a recent Executive/General Board meeting of Tefty. Each
quote came from one of the twenty teens who attended. Each of these teens is planning to run for next year's
Executive Board, giving back to the group that has given to them. The new officers for 2004-2005 are as follows:

I know that next year will create a new dedication and a new spirit, helping Temple Emanuel to grow and
find deep roots in the hearts of each and every member. I am encouraged that the promise of things to come
will most definitely find reality with these amazing teens.
I also want to reflect upon the school year just completed. Tefty's Executive Board, led most ably by president, Dani Dittrich, held monthly social activities. They ran an awesome Purim Carnival, whose Special Needs
component touched the hearts of more than 25 disabled teens. Social Action projects ranging from sleeping
bags for the homeless to wrist bands to help Israel to collecting children's books for Camden's needy children
were all successful. A night of games and dancing was a first for Tefty, and a most incredible first at that!
Meetings were held, projects were planned ... and a feeling of community grew. Thank you to each and every
member who gave ofhim/herselfto make Temple Emanuel stronger and more vibrant.

l Emanuel is rounding out its singing year with two exciting performances. On Friday, June 25 at
8 pm, the group will sing at the Shabbat Services honoring Cantor Robin Sherman. On August 2
through August 12, it will participate in the Zimriyah International Choral Festival in Israel. Phil and
oan Miller and Marty Rosenberg and Ellen Fennick invite singers (even if you're not in the choir!) to
join them in Israel with choral singers throughout the world. In addition to taking part in the festival, participants will also have the opportunity to tour Israel with them one week before performances.
For those of you "staying home," we continue throughout the warmer months with a special summer schedule.
Also in the summer, Kol Emanuel begins preparing for the beautiful holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kipper. Please check with the office if you are interested in joining us.
As promised, this article will continue our special feature of spotlighting a Kol Emanuel singer. June shines
the light on Janice Apple, a Kol Emanuel Soprano.
"1 joined the choir just after joining Temple Emanuel about eight years ago. It was because of the persistent
encouragement of Donna Friedman. Being a member of the choir has been a rewarding experience both spiritually and socially," says Janice.
As a new member at Temple Emanuel, Janice found joining the choir was a wonderful way to get involved
and meet other members of the temple family. She even found a long-lost relative!
"I was surprised to learn that after singing in the choir for many years that I am related to Helen Trautenberg
(who chairs the choir fund). Our families have since been reacquainted."
Janice's love of music stems from her parents. Her mother played the piano and Janice and her father would
sing along. The two would also sing in the car as he drove her to school. They would sing Jewish music, opera,
classical - even modern popular tunes from MTV!
While Janice studied piano, she soon switched to the guitar because it was easier to accompany herself. She
was involved in numerous small ensembles and choirs in Junior High School and overnight camp. Once she
found the nerve to audition for a camp musical, she was hooked.
"A star was born!" she laughs.
She began taking voice lessons in college, and even sang at a friend's wedding. But singing in Hebrew holds a
special place in her heart.
I loved Hebrew school because oflearning the prayers set to music. Our cantor had a magnificent voice and he was
an inspiration to me. Practicing each song and prayer under Julia's tutelage is a gratifying experience, and one that
serves to solidify my devotion to G-d and Judiasm," Janice says, quickly adding, "And it is lots offun too!"
Our Temple's Future.....
Our Temple members are today's custodians of a four thousand year chain of Jewish life that has been passed
from generation to generation, I'd or v'dor. Temple Emanuel has been a link in that chain for over 50 years, growing
from a few families meeting in each other's homes to a large family of over 1,020 membership units in our beautiful
building.
To ensure the vitality, meaningfulness and continuation of Jewish life for our children and grandchildren we, as
Temple members must strive to keep our synagogue dynamic, vibrant, strong and growing so that it can continue
to provide education, spiritual enrichment, support for life events and recreation, as well as new services for the
future to our members of all ages.
We must continue to grow by bringing into our temple family members who are committed to the challenge and
responsibility to continue and strengthen this link for the sake of our children and grandchildren.
If you have unaffiliated friends or acquaintances who recognize this responsibility and challenge, and may wish to
be a part of our family, invite them to join us for Shabbat services. Joanne Rosen, Vice-President for Membership

Numbers 8:1 - 12:16
This Torah portion begins with God telling Moses to instruct Aaron about how to kindle the lights
(Beha'alotecha et ha neirot) of the Menorah. The Israelites are reminded to celebrate Passover. God
commands Moses to have two silver trumpets made and then blown by Aaron's sons for a variety of reasons. God instructs Moses to appoint 70 elders to share the burden of ruling the people.

Sh'lach L'cha
Numbers 13:1- 15:41
In this Torah portion God tells Moses to send-Sh'lach L'cha-- twelve men, a leader from each tribe, to
scout the land of Canaan. Moses instructs the scouts (or in Hebrew "spies") to go first to the Negev and
then proceed up into the hill country. The scouts are to determine the quality of the land and the strength
of the people inhabiting the land.

Korach
Numbers 16:1 - 18:32
This parasha, Korach, is named after one of the men who led a serious rebellion against Moses and Aaron.
It begins with Korach gathering 250 leaders ofthe Israelite community and challenging the authority of
Moses and Aaron. Korach asserts that all members of the community are holy and asks Moses and Aaron
why they raise themselves above the rest of the people. Moses responds by telling Korach and his followers
to come to the Tent of Meeting the next day. They refuse, implying that he is a corrupt leader.

Numbers 19:1 - 22:1
In Chukat, the law of the red heifer is introduced. Ashes of the red heifer were to be used to purify those
who came into contact with a corpse. The Israelites continue on their journey toward the Promised Land.

A Gift for You - Every member photographed and selecting a
pose will appear in the directory and receive a free directory and
an 8x 10 portrait (limited to one free portrait and directory per
sitting)!

Rabbi David is celebrating his 30th Anniversary as
Rabbi at Temple Emanuel. We would like to gift him
with a pictorial directory, with the picture of each
Temple family included.
We have arranged to have each family'S picture taken
FREE of ~HARGE at the Temple. All you need to
do is make an appointment and show up!! You will
receive a FREE 8 x 10 color picture and a copy of
the book containing the pictures of everyone in the ·
congregation.
We cannot do this without you, and are counting on
each of you to participate - whether you are single,
married, with large family or small. Photos will be
taken by appointment on June 21-25 and June 28
&29 from 3 pm - 9 pm. (June 25 th until 8 pm)
