said Amita Bhide, associate professor at Tata Institute on Social Science
and an exper t on urbanization. “Par ts of Navi Mumbai, like Kharghar,

The Raigad Fort
Shivaji Bhosale (19 February 1627– 3 April 1680), was the founder of the Maratha Empire, which lasted until 1818,
and at its peak covered much of the Indian subcontinent. An aristocrat of the Bhosle Maratha clan, Shivaji led a
resistance to free the Maratha people from the Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur and the Mughal Empire and established
a Hindavi Swarajya ("self-rule of Hindu people"). He created an independent Maratha kingdom with Raigad as its
capital, and was crowned chhatrapati ("paramount sovereign") of the Marathas in 1674.
Raigad is a hill fortress situated in the modern day near Mahad, Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. The Maratha king
Shivaji Maharaj made the fort his capital in 1674 when he was crowned King of a Maratha Kingdom which later
developed into the Maratha Empire eventually covering majority of modern day India.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had seized the fort in 1656, then the fortress of Rairi, from the royal house of the
Chandrarrao Mores, a junior or Cadet dynasty to descended from the ancient Maurya imperial dynasty. The last More
king (or raja) was a feudatory of the Sultan of Bijapur. Shivaji renovated and expanded the Fortress of Rairi and renamed
it Raigad (the King's Fort). It became the capital of Shivaji's kingdom.

The Raigad Fort
In 1765 the Raigad Fort, along with Malwan in present Sindhudurg District, the southernmost district of Maharashtra,
was the target of an armed expedition by the British East India Company, which considered it a piratical stronghold.
In 1818 the fort was bombarded and destroyed by East India Company, using cannons.
The fort, which rises 820 metres (2,700 ft) above sea level, is located in the Sahyadri mountain range. There are
approximately 1737 steps leading to the fort, though today an areal tram exists to reach the top of the fort.

The Raigad Ropeway
The Raigad Ropeway is a ropeway which provides passenger transportation to the Raigad fort. The Raigad fort, which
is located in the Indian state of Maharashtra, is considered as the capital of national resistance and the final resting
place of the great founder of Indian liberation - Shivaji. It is a place of national importance and attracts pilgrims of all
ages. Prior to the rope way the only way to ascend the Raigad fort was to trek to it which took an hour. The Ropeway
makes this site relatively more accessible to those not in a physical condition to make this trek. The Raigad Ropeway
project is a non-profit endeavour, being the only one of its kind in India. This facility is owned by the Shri Shivaji Raigad
Smarak Mandal, (SSRSM) Pune an organisation started by Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1886.
