Background
Sanitation and hygiene are key to child survival, development and growth. Availability of adequate
sanitation facilities is central to the basic rights of every human being for personal dignity and self respect. Though lack of sanitation facilities affects people of all ages, the well-being of children is
particularly compromised. Poor sanitation implies unhealthy living condition leading to children
losing their lives at an early age. Therefore, sanitation is one of the core components of Humara
Bachpan Campaign.
Since the launch of Swacch Bharat Mission, HBC has carried out numerous advocacy activities all
over the country and has seen significant successes in terms of creating awareness and bringing
about tangible changes in the neighborhoods. As a part of advocacy and capacity building through
knowledge sharing, Humara Bachpan Campaign has brought this compilation of some of the best
initiatives undertaken by children as sanitation ambassadors for creating a cleaner India.
Contents: The document has been divided into two parts, one focusing on the activities undertaken
for spreading awareness on a cleaner, healthier environment and the other includes all the advocacy
efforts initiated by children in bringing about changes in their respective communities.

ADVOCATING FOR CLEAN NEIGHBOURHOOD

Gautam Nagar: A Bright Example of Children’s Advocacy
Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra
Gautam Nagar slum located in Andheri, Mumbai has a total population of 1250 with 560 household.
HBC started its intervention in the slum on 2 March, 2014. A child club has been formed in the slum
comprising of 45 children. The child club members have been very proactive, taking up issues and
advocating for the same. Due to the efforts of the children the slum has seen significant changes in
the past one year.
There is an area in the slum where pipes were strewn
all over the place rendering it difficult for the children
to play. Often children, while playing, would trip over
the pipes and injure themselves. The children of the
Gautam Nagar child club took it upon themselves to
raise the issue and advocate for change with the local
government authorities.
A group of 20 children from the club actively participated in the process which was led by Child
leaders Malati, Pratiksha and Shivani. They initiated the process by writing a letter to the Corporator
seeking to meet him and discussing the issue. The Corporator accepted their request to meet him
and on 12th February, 2015 the children met him and discussed the issue with him along with
presenting a Charter of Demands. The Corporator showed a keen interest in the issues raised by the
children and assured them to take immediate action
on the issue. As a result of the advocacy by the
children, the municipal workers started working on it
the next day and within a week the underground pipes
were constructed. Now the children are able to play on
that area without any hassles. Since the efforts of the
children were fruitful, it also developed a sense of
achievement among the children boosting their leadership skills.
In another similar instance, drains were lying uncovered in the slum. During rainy season, drain
water would overflow leaving the roads choked. The area where the children used to play would get
blocked with drain water leaving it impossible for the children to play. The children of the same child

club took up this issue and advocated with the Corporator again as a result of which the drains were
covered with immediate effect.

Humara Adhikar, Swacch Samudaya – Children’s Surveillance of Sanitation
Location: Delhi
Sanitation and hygiene have been a pressing issue in the resettlement colonies of Narela and the
lack of functional dustbins makes matter worse. Realizing this, the child leaders of Pocket-11 and 14,
Narela have taken matters into their own hands on more than one occasions to ensure a safer
neighborhood for themselves.
Create your own dustbin:
On the occasion of National Cleanliness Day, children
from Happy child club built handmade card board
trashcans and installed those all across the community.
The dustbins were painted and inscribed with messages
such as “Swach samuday hi Swast Samuday hota hai” on
its sides. Similar efforts were also made at MCD schools
in and around the community. Over 300 children
participated in the cause.
Surveillance of Sanitation:
Child leaders from Pocket 11, Narela have come together to monitor the issues that surround the
basic services in their community. In an effort to present such issues to their local MLA, child leaders
maintain pictorial and written records of the same. Prevalent issues such as dysfunctional toilets, ill
maintained play spaces and lack of dustbins have been elaborately documented by the child leaders.
Such monitoring efforts with help not only the local authorities, but the community as well. It will
ensure a proper tracking of issues and resolutions in the future.

Humara Adhikar, Swacch Samudaya – Demand for Construction of

Despite the amount being sanctioned, the

of
Ruppanpur,
especially the mother’s groups and children,
along with Humara Bachpan advocated for
the construction of community toilets. After
multiple discussions with the community
members and local leaders a consensus was
reached for the location of the toilet. Child
leaders and mothers from Ruppanpur met the
Mayor and discussed on the sanitation issues
and presented a demand to build public
toilets in the community. A sum of Rs.
2,00,000 was sanctioned for construction of a
community toilet.

Humara Adhikar, Swacch Samudaya – Cleaning of Canal
Location: Chennai, Tamil Nadu
Giriyappa Road and MK Radha Nagar slums are
situated in South Chennai Ward No.117, Zone 9
in Chennai. Both the slums are separated by a
canal running in between. The canal was in a
very bad condition filled with wastes and due to
stagnant water it had become the breeding place
of mosquitoes. Due to mosquito infestation
malaria and dengue fever were highly prevalent
in the community.
The child club members of the slums decided to
raise this issue with the local government
authorities. On July 14, 2015 the children drafted
a letter and a COD demanding cleaning the canal
with immediate effect and submitted it to the
Councilor. The Councilor accepted their demands
and assured that he will act upon it immediately.
On 15 July the cleaning process started and the
canal was cleaned in two days. The Councilor has
also given his word that the canal will be cleaned once every month.
