National Office
A. Activity Report
In 2013, AIFIS held a total of 36 events including seminars, lectures and capacity building workshops
focusing on a broad range of issues and academic disciplines. AIFIS has also been active in pairing
American and Indonesian scholars as research counterparts, and assisting American scholars in obtaining
the necessary permits to conduct research in Indonesia. Building on its achievements in 2012, AIFIS has
continued to strengthen its relationship with the US Embassy, the Library of Congress and other
American organizations working in Indonesia. AIFIS has also substantially broadened its collaboration
with Indonesian academic institutions and NGOs.

Contact with U.S. Embassy in Jakarta
At the end of March 2013, AIFIS hosted Scot Marciel, US Ambassador for Indonesia to give the opening
speech at an event entitled “Interfaith Dialogue: Lessons learned from Muslims in America.” The invited
speaker at this event was Ustadz Shamsi Ali, a native Indonesian and imam at the Islamic Cultural Center in
New York.

On June 20, 2013, Clay Pell, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Department of Education for International and
Foreign Language Education visited the AIFIS office, accompanied by representatives from the Cultural
Affairs section at the US Embassy and the Library of Congress. AIFIS’s Supervisory Representative, Timothy
McKinnon gave a short presentation outlining AIFIS’s achievements in its year and a half of existence. This
was followed by brief remarks from Abby Cohn (Cornell University) and Michael Price (Stanford University)
outlining how AIFIS has been assisting American scholars in dealing with logistical challenges facing scholars
conducting research in Indonesia.

Mr. Pell thanked AIFIS for its hard work and, remarking on the administration’s foreign policy “pivot”
toward Asia, especially Southeast Asia, emphasized that the Department of Education is eager to know
how it can help AIFIS further develop in Indonesia. Plans were then discussed for initiating an
AIFIS/Fulbright Lecture series, and for ways in which Indonesian books and journals can be made more
accessible through digitization, particularly through gaining access to LIPI’s large research archives. Plans
were also discussed for a general meeting between AIFIS and USINDO, AMINEF, US Joint Council, the US

Embassy, Ford Foundation and other US agencies in Indonesia. AIFIS subsequently received a letter of
thanks from the Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the US Embassy, stating that they were very impressed
with AIFIS’s activities and programs, including the broad networking with diverse organizations
throughout the country. There have been continued conversations with Will Truchrello, Director of the
Library of Congress for Southeast Asia regarding the possibility of AIFIS working with LC to digitize
Indonesian scholarly publications for availability to scholarly institutions and the possibility of AIFIS and
LC establishing a joint position perhaps in our satellite office in Yogyakarta, to work on digitalization.
C. AIFIS’ Indonesian Academic Journal Internationalization Program
Following workshop on “Sustainability, Accessibility and Networking: Increasing the International Impact
of Indonesian Journal.” At University of Indonesia, on last 7-8 February 2013, AIFIS developing AIFIS’
Indonesian Academic Journal Internationalization Program, and launched on aisjip.weebly.com. Up to
now AIFIS has 16 MOU’s with 16 Journal publishers.

H. Grants and Fellowship Program
During 2013, the successful aplicants for the fellowships are currently carrying out their research in
Indonesia are:
a) Rebakah Daro Minarchek (Development Sociology, Cornell University), whose project is entitled
“Creating Commodities in Gunung Halimun National Park, Indonesia: Changing Market Access and
the Impact on Food Security and Gender Relations.” Her host institution is the Center of
International Forestry Research (CIFOR), a Consultative Group on International Agriculture Research
(CGIAR) center in Bogor. She arrived in Indonesia in late May and has a six-month research visa.
b) John MacDougal, (Cultural Anthropology, Miles College, Fairfield, Alabama), whose project is
entitled: “The Cultural and Social Antagonism between Thieves and Clerics in Today’s Lombok.” His
local sponsor is Fair Trade organizer Mitra Bali and he arrived in Indonesia on May 17, with a sosial
budaya visa and with the expectation of returning to the United States by June.
c) Nicole Reisnour (Ethnomusicology, Cornell University), whose project is entitled "Sounding the
Immaterial: the Sonic Politics of Adat and Agama in Post-Authoritarian Bali.” She was accepted as a
Research Fellow at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at the University of Indonesia.
She arrived in Indonesia in March 2013 and will be carrying out research under the AIFIS grant until
August 2013.
d) Charles Sullivan (History, University of Michigan), whose project is entitled “Tjotjokkah Aku
Berpakaian Barat?”: Women and Modernity in Indonesia, 1951-1969.” Universitas Muhammadiyah

Surakarta will sponsor his research, and he is intending to be in Indonesia from August to October
2013.
e) Jennifer Goldstein (Geography, UCLA), whose project is entitled “Boondoggle, or Benefit? The
Commodification of Degraded Landscapes in Indonesia in an Age of Climate Change.” She is
intending to leave for Indonesia in October or November 2013, and will have institutional affiliation
with the University of Gadjah Mada.

Yogyakarta Office
AIFIS Yogyakarta Office was established to help implement AIFIS’ main goals of fostering scholarly exchange
between Indonesian and U.S. scholars, to promote educational and research efforts by U.S. scholars in
Indonesia, and to facilitate visits by Indonesian scholars to the United States. The office was established at
the Center for Southeast Asia Social Studies (CESSAS), UGM, through a Memorandum of Understanding
between AIFIS and the Center.
In period from July – December 2013, the office focused on networking activities in the Central Java region,
introducing AIFIS to institutional partners and developing memoranda of understanding as a basis for future
collaboration. These institutions included the American Corner at UGM and UMY, Universitas Islam
Indonesia (UII), Nihlah Ilhami, Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga.
In September 2013, AIFIS initiated cooperation with Universitas Negeri Solo (also known as Universitas
Sebelas Maret), which recently opened a center for research on Javanese culture. AIFIS visited the campus
on Thursday, September 12th, 2013 and signed an MoU with UNS at the end of October 2013. As part of the
implementation of this MoU, AIFIS supervisory representative Timothy Mckinnon visited the campus and
delivered a keynote speech. AIFIS has subsequently collaborated with UNS through its Scientific Journal
Internationalization Program and will organize a lecture on Javanese culture featuring an American guest
speaker in the coming weeks, Kathryn Emerson a Javanese culture expert will give lecture at Javanology
Center of UNS
A. Research Presentations
1. AIFIS – CESSAS Panel Discussion
On October 23th, AIFIS cooperated with CESSAS UGM to organize a panel discussion entitiled
“Religious and Political Movements: Challenges & Prospects for The New ASEAN Community.” The
discussion was cohosted by the Faculty of Social and Political Science, UGM. The event featured
three invited speakers: Dicky Sofjan, Ph.D., alumnus of Northeastern University, Boston, USA and
Core Doctoral Faculty of ICRS UGM; Dr. Phil. Al Makin, Editor in Chief - Al Jamiah; and Ahmad
Munjid, Ph.D. Cand. Temple University, USA.

2. Movie Screening GIRL RISING
AIFIS, along with the Jurnal Pendidikan Islam and DEMA Fakultas Tarbiyah UIN Sunan Kalijaga,
organized a movie screening featuring the film “Girl Rising” on Tuesday, 22 October 2013 at UIN
Sunan Kalijaga. This event was supported by Intel Indonesia. The event featured two speakers—Dr.
Ema Marhumah from the Center for Women’s Studies UIN Suka & Elivette Mendez Angulo from
Hartford Seminary, USA. The event was atteded by 120 people.

3. A Public Lecture “Ekonomi Kerakyatan”
AIFIS, along with the Sociology Laboratory and Student Organization at the Faculty of Social Science
and Humanities, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, organized a Public Lecture “Ekonomi Kerakyatan” on Friday, 6
December 2013. The event featured Dr. Revrisond Baswir, MBA, (The Chair of Center for Economic
Democracy Studies, UGM and alumnus of Western Michigan University, USA). This event was part of
AIFIS’s ongoing public lecture series “A Discussion Series on Economic Democracy.”

AIFIS organized a Journal Management Workshop on Friday, the 20th of December at the Center for
Southeast Social Asia Studies, UGM. Participants included Journal Publishers at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, UNS
Surakarta, and Pesantren Aswaja Nusantara. The event facilitator was Dr. Phil. Al Makin, M.A., Editor in
Chief Journal Al Jamiah, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta.

AIFIS’s Communications and Networking officer has been developing several formal and informal links
between AIFIS and institutions beyond Jakarta. The following attachment details these activities and their
potential outcomes.
The following table provides an overview of the networking actities of AIFIS Jakarta’s Communications and
networking officer Chozin. Chozin has been working to develop a broad network on contacts and partners in
Indonesia. Establishing contact persons at diverse institutions serves multiple purposes including facilitating
research collaborations between US and Indonesian scholars, developing public awareness about AIFISsponsored events, building interest and participation in AIFIS-sponsored initiatives (such as journal
internationalization) and Luce Fellowships, etc.

Chozin’s role has primarily been to coach Faishol Adib
(jogya supervisor) in planning and preparing activities, in
expanding networks in Yogyakarta, and disseminating
press releases to media for AIFIS events.
So far Chozin has initiated contact with the alumni
associations for Ohio university, the University of Hawaii
at Manoa, and Nothern Illinois University.

Chozin has expanded AIFIS’s network of government
offices such as: RI’s Ombudsman, LIPI, and the Provincial
Government of DKI Jakarta. The network has also been
expanded to several NGOs, such as: Kemitraan
(Partnership for Governance Reform), Indonesia
Mengajar, Suluh Nusantara, and Transparency
International Indonesia (TII).
Whenever AIFIS has an event, Chozin has created press
releases for the media. A list of these press releases are
attached.

them periodic emails to see whether there is someone
coming through town whowe could host for a lecture of

together with them, since they always have great
scholars coming through

Chozin has spearheaded AIFIS’s discussion series
focussing on Ekonomi Kerakyatan (Economic
Democracy). The discussions featured as part of this
series are recorded and transcribed; and will be
compiled into a manuscript.
Chozin has been active in adding content to AIFIS’s
website and social media. AIFIS media has seen a
significant increase in web hits since Chozin was hired.
Chozin has promoted AIFIS at various locations across
Indonesia. Through his work with Anies Baswedan,
Chozin has travelled extensively throughout Indonesia.
He has actively promoted AIFIS and established contacts
throughout his travels.
Chozin has been active in initiating and fine-tuning
institutional MoUs.

Activity Report: July 2013
Introduction
In July 2013, I traveled to several cities in Sulawesi and Sumatera to introduce AIFIS and expand its network.
In Sumatera, I traveled with AIFIS’ fellow Diego Fossati who is on his field work of conducting research on
health policy issue in Indonesia. Hence, my travel was not only expanding the networks but also helping
Diego Fossati in conducting interview and data collection.
Travel to Central Sulawesi Province
On 12-13 July 2013, I visited Palu, the capital city of Central Sulawesi province. I met with Mr. Amin Abdullah,
a local prominent artist who popularized Kakula music globally. He also works as a lecturer at Tadulako
University of Palu and staf at the Culture and Tourism Agency of Central Sulawesi Province. He earned his
master’s degree in Asian studies at the University of Hawaii in Manoa, USA. Further information about what

To Mr. Abdullah I introduced AIFIS and discussed the potential collaboration between AIFIS and UNTAD or
other institutions in Palu. As he is now in the process of initiating an Institute of Art and Culture in Palu, so
there is possibility to establish collaboration in art and culture events. Mr. Abdullah told me that the
Institute of Art and Culture only available in Java so far, therefore, there is a need to establish the art and
culture institutions in other islands outside Java.
Travel to Jambi Province
On 20-21 July, I visited Jambi Province, the capital city of Jambi Province. First, I met with Dr. Bambang
Hariyadi who teaches at University of Jambi (UNJA). Dr. Hariyadi is a scientist who focuses on preserving
indigenous knowledge of conservation. He wrote a book titled “The Entwined Tree: Traditional Natural
Resource Management of Serampas, Jambi, Indonesia”. To Mr. Hariyadi, I introduced AIFIS and discuss any
possibility for initiating a partnership between AIFIS and UNJA. Since he concerns on conservation and
indigenous issues, he gave an idea of initiating collaboration research between Indonesian and American
scientists to work on preserving indigenous knowledge of conservation. According to him, America and
Indonesia have similar experience in preserving the indigenous people. America has experience in preserving
the Native American and Indonesia has experience in preserving indigenous people such as Kubu tribe in
Jambi. Therefore, scientists from both countries may share knowledge and ideas to work on this issue.

Secondly, I met with Mrs. Nelly who works as program officer at WARSI. WARSI is an organizational network
established in January 1992, with membership made up of twelve NGOs from four provinces in Sumatra
(South Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bengkulu and Jambi), whose focus is biodiversity conservation and
community development (for further information: www.warsi.or.id). Currently, WARSI’s program has a lot of
focus on Kubu tribe in Jambi Province. Besides introducing AIFIS, I also discussed any possibility to build
activity collaboration with WARSI. According to Nelly, collaboration in the student exchange between
America and Indonesia is a possibility. Because, so far, WARSI already has collaboration with Volunteer of
America that sending American students regularly to do internship in WARSI. To do internship, Volunteer of
America pays their travel cost and WARSI pays their living expenses in Jambi. However, as now WARSI’s
financial capacity is getting weaken, so they need fund support from other institution to cover the cost of
the internship.
Lastly, besides meeting with scientist and activities, we also had a chance to meet with Governor of Jambi,
Mr. Hasan Basri at his house. Diego Fossati used this opportunity to interview him regarding his research on
health policy in Jambi.

Travel to Bengkulu Province
On 24 July 2013, I visited Bengkulu Province. I met with faculty
members in Social and Political Science Department at University
of Bengkulu (UNIB). We discussed the possibility of establishing
networking between AIFIS and UNIB. The Dean said that they will
welcome to any initiative from AIFIS to make partnership. There
are several possibilities of sending researchers exchange between
UNIB and AIFIS or even establishing a small office for AIFIS at
UNIB. According to the Dean, there are very few foreign

researchers come to Bengkulu for conducting research, therefore, they are eager to invite more foreign
researcher to conduct research collaboration in Bengkulu. []
Activity Report: August 2013
August in the month of Ramadhan and Lebaran holidays. So, we did not have many event for AIFIS during the
month, but I tried keep expand the AIFIS communication and networking to stake holders.
1. Disseminated information on scholarships AIFIS Henry Luce Foundation Grants for 2014 through
personal networking and community mailing groups such as: Beasiswa mailing list
community,alumni of International Fellowship Program of Ford Foundation, national coverage
student organizations (HMI, IMM, PMKRI, and GMNI), university alumni associations (KAGAMA UGM, Ohio Alumni, UI Alumni, etc.). I wrote a Press Release about the opportunities AIFIS Henry
Luce Foundation Grants for 2014 to be published by several media.
2. Helped the AIFIS office in Yogyakarta in preparing programs and activities. As the AIFIS office in
Yogyakarta have just started, so the officer Faishol Adib regularly consulted with me on how to set
up the networking with institutions and creating activities in Yogyakarta. The consultation mosty
during the night, by phone, email, and tex message.
3. In collaboration with USINDO, AIFIS hosted a a Special Historical Lecture and Open Forum “The
Origins of the Indonesian Nation: The Indonesian Revolution, 1945-1949” with Professor Eric
Tagliacozzo, Professor of HistoryCornell University. The Lecture is which held on August 15, 2013 was
toning up the celebration of Indonesian Independence Day of 17 August 1945. The topic focused on
the Indonesian Revolution of 1945-49 when the actual negotiations for independence amonst Japan,
the Dutch, the Indonesian nationalists, and the United Nations. It also examined what was the key
role of the United States during the time. I especially halped the preparation process for the event as
well as made a report after the event to be spred to several media in Jakarta, as well as putting them
into our facebook.
4. Preparing the Discussion on Crisis in Egypt and its implications for Indonesia. The discussion which in
cooperation with KAHMI to be held Paramadina University, on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at 10:00
am. As the speaker is Dr. Haidar Bagir (Owner of the second biggest national publisher of Mizan
Publishing, alumni of Harvard University) and Prof. Bakhtiar Ali (Former Ambassador to Egypt and
Lecturer at Fisip UI).
“Egypt and Indonesia have a very close relationship both in history and education. Egypt (with the
Palestinians) is the first country to recognize the independence and sovereignty of the Republic of
Indonesia. On March 22, 1946, at the urging Egyptian Shaykh Hasan Albanna (head of the Muslim
Brotherhood), recognized the independence of Indonesia. Since Egypt and Palestine recognized
Indonesian independence, countries in the Middle East flocked recognized Indonesian independence.
Not only that, India and surrounding countries, then, followed these steps. Other than that, Indonesia
also sends thausand of students to study in Egypt, especially to Al-Azhar University whis is the oldest
university in the world. In fact, when the tsunami hit Aceh in 2004, the Muslim Brotherhood has sent
Dr. Mohammad Mursi to directly to Aceh to conduct humanitarian activities. Therefore, the
humanitarian crisis in Egypt influences to Indonesian people and results to some demonstration and
debates in Indonesia.”
5. As I get a special invitation, I will attend the Political Local Staff Networking Political Counselor of the
Embassy of the United States of America in Jakarta, on Thursday, 29 August 2013. According to
invitation, the event is for Fostering Greater Cooperation and Friendship with the Local Staff
Colleagues in Government and Other Foreign Missions. In the event, I will introduce AIFIS to people
I meet there.

6. 24 Agustus 2013, Met with Tri Lindawati, bagian kerja sama Lembaga Ombudsman RI, we discussed
about availability from AIFIS to give capacity building training on Ombudsman Library management.

7. Preparing the discussion on economy at Sampoerna School of Business which planned to be held on
12 October 2013. Particularly, I helped the Organizing Committee to invite high profile speaker, Mr.
Rizal Ramli, Ph.D.
8. Meeting with Cameron, student from Chicago University who is preparing to conduct an
anthropological research on forestry and people in Sumatera. I helped him to gave some ideas and
connect with Indonesian scholars who focus on forestry.
9. Meeting with the representative of the International Office at the Universitas Negeri Surabaya
(UNESA) in Surabaya to introduce AIFIS programs and assessing the prospective cooperation.
10. preparing and sending the draft of MoU to International Office of the Universitas Negeri Surabaya
(UNESA) as a followup of the meeting with UNESA on 27 September 201 in Surabaya
11. Prearing the event of Talkshow on Children Education at Atmajaya University, in collaboration with
AIFIS. My role was to review the TOR and to invite speaker who will be speaking on the topic of
education. The event is scheduled to beld on 20 November 2013.
12. Preparing the event of Workshop on the "Role of Librarian in Supporting Knowledge Management".
My duty are to edit the TOR, making the whole concept of the event, and inviting speakers. The
event is scheduled on December 2013.

1. Preparing the cooperation between AIFIS and the International Office of the Universitas Negeri
Surabaya (UNESA), uncludes: making appointment to have a meeting the rector of UNESA and
sending brochure of AIFIS to UNESA. This as a follow up of the meeting with UNESA's international
office on 28 September 2013.
2. Seeking the prospective speakers for the event of Talkshow “Permainan Tradisional: Sarana
Pembelajaran yang Makin Tergusur” which was held at Atmajaya University on 26 November 2013.
3. "Seeking prospective speakers for Forum Diskusi Mahasiswa (FORKUSI), as an event for Teacher's
Day (Hari Guru Nasional) which held on 20 November 2013.
4. Following up the communication with UNESA Surabaya for meeting with the rector at UNESA.

Overall Program Achievements:
AIFIS Yogyakarta Office is established to help implementing AIFIS’ main goals to foster scholarly
exchange between Indonesian and U.S. scholars, to promote educational and research efforts by U.S.
scholars in Indonesia, and to facilitate visits by Indonesian scholars to the United States. The office is
established at the Center for Southeast Asia Social Studies (CESSAS), UGM, through a Memorandum of
Understanding between AIFIS and the Center.
In the first semester, July – December 2013, the office focuses in introducing AIFIS to any potential
institutions and partners, including American Corner at UGM and UMY. In addition, the office also
establishes and develops networks, especially with universities. AIFIS Yogyakarta Office visited the
International Office, Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), on Monday, August 19th 2013, to continue the MoU
process between UII and AIFIS. AIFIS met Wiryono Raharjo, Ph.D., the Vice Dean of the office, and Nihlah
Ilhami, the Manager of International Office. The MoU process run slowly because of bureaucracy issue.
Currently, the Rector of UII, Prof. Dr. Edy Suandi Hamid, M.Ec., canceled to visit AIFIS New York to make a
ceremonial signing of MoU. He has just signed the MoU and will send it to AIFIS New York for AIFIS signing.
AIFIS met the Vice Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Dr. H. Maksudin, M.Ag on Thursday, September 5th,
2013 to initiate establishing a cooperation between AIFIS and UIN Sunan Kalijaga. AIFIS followed the meeting
by sending a draft of MoU to the Vice Rector on Monday, September 2nd 2013. AIFIS meets a similar
bureaucracy issue in this campus. Up to know, the Vice Rector has not responded whether the campus agree
the MoU Draft. However, AIFIS has developed network and cooperation with some faculties of UIN Sunan
Kalijaga under the Scientific Journal Internationalization Program. AIFIS has also cooperated with some
faculties in organizing some discussions.
In the same month, September 2013, AIFIS also initiated a cooperation with UNS. AIFIS visited the
campus on Thursday, September 12th, 2013. AIFIS met Dr. Widodo Muktiyo, the Vice Rector, and Taufiq Al
Makmun, M.A., the Director of International Office. This is the second visit after the first visit on May 2013
when AIFIS met the Dean of Faculty of Economy and the Vice Dean of the Faculty. AIFIS did not met the
bureaucracy issue in this campus. AIFIS and UNS have signed the MoU in the end of October 2013 since the
two parties met and discussed the MoU on 12 September 2013. To implement this MoU, AIFIS has
cooperated with some faculties in the Scientific Journal Internationalization Program and wil organize a
discussion in the campus.
Key Accomplishments:
1. AIFIS Yogyakarta Office has organized some discussions to promote research efforts by U.S. and
Indonesians scholars. They are a) AIFIS – CESSAS Panel Discussion on “Religious and Political

Movements: Challenges & Prospects for The New ASEAN Community,” b) Movie Screening and
discussion GIRL RISING, and c) A Public Lecture on Ekonomi Kerakyatan.
2. The office has cooperated with some journals in UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta; UNS Solo; and
Pesantren in AIFIS’ Indonesian Scientific Journal Internationalization Program.
3. The office has introduced and communicated its activities to local media. Tribun Jogja is the main
media partner that helps AIFIS in promoting its activities. Currently, Tribun Jogja has published seven
times of AIFIS activities. Please see attachment.
Upcoming Activities:
Yogyakarta is one of the best places for AIFIS to implement its main goals where it is recognized as the city of
education. AIFIS Yogyakarta Office can establish and develop cooperation with universities and research
institutions. In addition, the office is also able to establish and develop cooperation with Pesantren and Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). In practice, AIFIS Yogyakarta Office will continue in implementing AIFIS’
Indonesian Scientific Journal Internationalization Program with these institutions.
While AIFIS has cooperated in this program with universities and pesantren, AIFIS will see the possibilities in
implementing this program with research institutions and NGOs. The office will also continue to organize
discussions to promote research efforts by U.S. and Indonesian scholars. Finally, the office will develop some
initiatives, such as capacity building for educational institutions. Journal Management Workshop and
Training on Research Proposal Writing are some examples of these capacity building initiatives.
