Dear Friends and Shockey Cousins
By: Lesley Shockey
Another year has come and gone and there has been so many changes that I am not sure where to
start. The major change in my life has been the death of Naomi which many of you already know about.
She waged a major battle with her lung cancer for 37 months but the end seemed to have come to
suddenly for me. Later in this newsletter I will include the letter that I wrote that was read at her funeral.
David F. Shockey, who served as the second President of the Shockey Family Fellowship Inc. following the
term of John C. Shockey, made the decision to step down from the office in 2014. I was elected as President
to replace him.
Donna K. Shockey also made the decision to step down as Secretary after during a great job for so many
years. Donna J. Porter also made the decision to step down as Treasurer after so many years of keeping the
books in order. The decision to combine the two jobs was made and Edward Paul Browne II was selected to
fill the dual positions.
Marie, who has written at least the opening pages for the Newsletter for the past 41 years, is not able to
contribute her usual articles this year. One of the two major problems is that here computer is down and she
cannot send or receive email. Second she has lost the use of her right hand since her medical problems this
past December.
Last year’s Newsletter announced that the next two reunions would be held in Shockeysville or Winchester.
The decision was made at the 2015 reunion to move the 2016 reunion to Arkansas with John L. Shockey and
David L. Shockey co-hosting the reunion.
The 2016 Shockey Family Reunion will be held at the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Benton, Arkansas June 30th
through July 4th. Our group rate is $91.00 plus tax. Amenities include free high speed Internet, free hot
breakfast, fitness center and pool.
To make your reservations call 1-501-722-6330 and be sure to mention the Shockey family reunion to
receive the discount rate.
Fairfield Inn & Suites in Benton is along I-30 Frontage Road near Exit 118.
Plans include visits to several cemeteries in which Shockey relatives are buried, a trip to Garvan Gardens and
Crater of Diamonds State Park, possibly a tour of Hot Springs and Lake Hamilton on a Duck and also a tour of the
President Clinton Library if there is enough interest. If you prefer flying, the nearest airport is Little Rock
Airport. Hope to see you at the Shockey reunion.
Last year we had 41 guests that registered. Ten states were represented. Those from West Virginia were:
Les and Naomi Shockey of Sandyville, WV, David Shockey of Fayetteville, WV, Neal and Edna Shockey and
Debbie Riggleman of Mabie, WV. The ones from Kentucky were: Marie Shockey of Elizabethtown, KY, David

NEWSLETTER REPORT: Marie reported assisting Les with newsletter. Les reported that the Newsletter was
posted on-line. He reported, however, that there had been fewer than 200 visitors to the download site.
David F Shockey stated that many people do not use the Internet and that he knew of many that had been
users that were moving away from Internet use. He stated that the lack of knowledge on computer use;
difficulty using software; and difficulty navigating web site were often reasons. He opinionated that it is likely
we will se a decrease in use (at least amongst older members) and that the board should consider revisiting
the possibility of mailing copies.
Les mentioned that he had only one phone request for a printed copy and that the URL and E-Mail address for
web use was on his new business card.
Sharon Wetzel-Shockey opinionated that the use of on-line and social media was a good thing and would be
good for expanding membership.
David H Shockey recommended that there be two portions of the newsletter: The small section and the larger
Obituaries section, that way members could download or we could print and mail the smaller part more
cheaply for those that don’t want the obituaries.
GENEOLOGY REPORT: Les Shockey gave the geology report - there are currently 7721 families; 28,333 events;
21,454 citations; and 843 photos in the system today. Les also discussed the DNA program and also solicited

for a drain field. Investigate the possibility of getting a Port-a-Potty for free as a temporary measure.
The minister brought up the possibility of having two tanks. The “solid” tank would have to be emptied. The
“liquid” could be taken for sterilization and use.

believed that the lots were to be used as hunting lodges or “city get aways” but not residences.

My letter that was read during Naomi’s service:
My dearest Naomi I will be lost without you to share things with. You have been at the center of my world for
a very long time and we enjoyed doing so many things together.
You were a great wife, mother, care giver and so much more. You were a worrier though and I dreaded
hearing the scanner announce and ambulance call or a wreck. This meant that you had to make contact with
each of your children and their families to insure that each and every one of them was safe.
You were a caring and kind caregiver and become a part of so many families because of your loving ways and
the way they knew that their loved one was in great hands.
You will be missed by many at the national Shockey Family reunions. All of the extended Shockey family loved
you and the special way that you could always relate your various life experiences. One of your stories that
was always a favorite was the one where the young men from southeast Kentucky called us at supper time
one day wanting me to furnish them a burial permit so that they could have their father reburied after digging
him up at Independence, strapped the casket on to the top of their Jeep and drove away.
You loved to shop so I never had to worry about running out of many things.
I will miss your discovering new things and seeing new places in our travels.
Your loving husband, Lesley
Donna Porter, Volunteer of the Year Award
The following article is from the Foothills Genealogical Society March-April 2015 Newsletter.
Donna Porter received the Birdie Monk Holsclaw Volunteer of the Year Award at the February meeting of Foothills
Genealogical Society. The award was presented to Donna by Pat Roberts, a Colorado Genealogical Society member and
national speaker, who read the nomination letter submitted to the awards committee by Foothills Genealogical Society.
Donna, a Colorado native, grew up in Canon City. She married Paul and they
lived in many states before settling in Longmont, Colorado in 1980. She took her
first genealogy class in Billings, Montana in 1957 before they moved to West
Palm Beach, Florida in 1964. Disappointed in the lack of genealogical resources
in the West Palm Beach Public Library, Donna started a genealogical society that
later honored her in 1984 as its founder.
The family moved to Denver in 1966 and she joined the Colorado
Genealogical Society (CGS) that held meetings in members’ living rooms. She
was president of CGS from 1968-1970. She received the first Genealogical
Certification (CG) awarded in
the State of Colorado and has been a member of the Colorado Genealogical
Society for over 50 years. She was a founding member of the Colorado Council
of Genealogical Societies and held the office of President. Donna has written
books on genealogy and been an active member of at least a dozen other
genealogical and historical societies in Colorado and other states. She has been
sought after as a lecturer, instructor, teacher, and mentor because of her
interest and understanding of genealogy.
Proud of my grandchildren
In the left photo Bailey Shockey is preparing to pitch in a softball game for the Gallia Academy Blue
Angels. She pitched her first winning game on April 12th. On the right is Warren Shockey, who plays for
the Dayton Dragons 11u Select team, delivering a pitch in the game against Waynesville Spartans which
the Dragons won 14-0. This is early in his season but he currently carries a .800 batting average and a
1.000 on base percentage. Both Bailey and Warren are the children of Charles W Shockey. Charles also
has 10 year old Michael whose baseball season has not started yet. Getting to watch my grandchildren
play helps me get over the loss of Naomi somewhat.
SHOCKEY Genealogy Updates
By:
Lesley Shockey
Naomi and I had to head home one day earlier from the 2015 reunion than planned because Naomi had
more fluid building up around her heart and lungs. Thankfully Paul Browne stepped up and led the Monday
tour To Pennsylvania and Maryland including Ringgold, PenMar Park, Shank’s Mill and a tour around the area
that comprised The Third Survey of Sarah’s Delight. We knew coming home that Naomi’s breathing was
becoming quite labored. I helped her to bed with plans to take her to Huntington the next morning. She
woke me up during the night and I check her oxygen level. It was at 67% so I called 9-1-1 and got dressed
while waiting for them. She spent the next 12 days at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington having fluid drained
from around her heart and lungs. Over the next seven and a half months she was hospitalized three more
times, each for eight days or more.
Once again I have not had as much time to spend on the Shockey Family database as what I would like.
(It seems like the days, weeks and months are all becoming shorter.) I do add to the data as time permits.
Remember to bring your family photographs that can be scanned and entered into the database. If you do not
have a database that can be exported by a GEDCOM, at least be sure to bring additions or corrections to the
reunion. Make notes of dates and places in order to insure that we enter the correct information. Too much
information is always better than not enough.
The database contains 21,879 people (with some duplicates not eliminated yet), 7,814 families, 28,916
events (births, deaths, marriages etc.), 4,429 places, 22,237 citations and 849 multimedia items (photos,
licenses etc.). The database continues to grow and hopefully someday soon all duplicates will be eliminated.

SHOCKEY DNA Project
The SHOCKEY DNA Project is part of the Family Tree DNA. Descendants who carry the bloodlines from
John Christopher Shockey belong to Haplogroup Q (most likely Q1b1a subclade) which is quite rare in
comparison to other groups.
We now have fifty two members in the Shockey DNA Project. Of these, thirty three men have their DNA
tested and twenty are males with either the Shockey surname or persons who match the Shockey DNA.
There are twenty one in the group that have taken advantage of the Family Finder test, eleven men and ten
women. Two other men are awaiting the results of their Family Finder test. Dennis Teegardin/Shockey has
1290 people who show relationship of 5th cousin or closer. Charlotte Shockey has over 1140 people who are
related 5th cousin or closer. Of course she has had her father, mother and aunt all test. I have 1551 people
who Family Finder reports as 5th cousins or closer. The others who have taken part in the Family Finder test
also have many relatives listed. The one thing that I have against Family Finder is for persons who have two or
more ancestral lines in common, it calculates a much closer relationship than is actually the case. For
instance, if you have two ancestors in common and you have a 6 th cousin in with both lines, it combines the
markers in common and lists you as probable 3rd cousin.
Six men have now had the Y-DNA-111 marker test. On this test I show only one marker difference to one
other Shockey, two markers difference on another and three markers difference to the other two Shockey
descendants.
I have taken the Big-Y test which shows we descend from the Swiss Mennonites. Nine of the twenty nine men
that I match show no known SNP differences and with the best match showing 27,317 matching SNPs. I can
see no connections with the nine surnames. Comparing my SNPs to those of Christopher Baysinger, we have
24,970 matching SNPs and no SNP differences. However his Haplogroup is showing as Q-BZ4 and mine is now
showing as Q=BZ6. Stephen and Dennis, who have the next highest level of tests, show a Haplogroup of
Q-YP1095. The remainder of the Shockey males show either a Q-L245 or Q-M378 depending on tests
completed.
We are still hoping to find someone who descends from Samuel Christian Shockey, the last son of John
Christopher Shockey. There may be a few male descendants of Samuel and carrying the Shockey surname
living in California. I need to make contact with them.

born at the family home in Russia Canyon near Cloudcroft.
He was the oldest of six children that consisted of four brothers and one sister. He attended school in Russia Canyon

New Mexico State Championship in six-man football.
He began his life after school at an early age by working as a rancher and a dairy hand at Leon Green's dairy in Cox

built and make a fast run to the top of the mountain at Cloudcroft.

Carolyn Jane Richmond, 84, Manlius
Everyone who knew or met our mother Carolyn Jane Richmond could see that she was the sweetest and the most
caring, loving, understanding mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, wife, daughter, friend, teacher and
human being. Carolyn made everyone feel special and loved. When with her, you always felt that you mattered and

We will miss laughing and talking and being together. We had no greater champion in our lives than our mother. It's
no wonder to her family why it is so difficult to say goodbye. This is how saying goodbye to our mother went… Bye, love
you. Bye mom, love you too… love you. Love you, bye, love you. Love you, bye…until someone had to hang up. Bye
mom.

March 4, 1937 in East Liverpool, Ohio. Shockey, as known by many, was someone who could take anything broken and

Robert E. Shockey II "Bob", a.k.a "Wolfman," age 67, son of Robert and Mary Shockey, passed away peacefully in his
sleep from a heart condition on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at Reading Hospital.
Bob spent most of his life in Willow Grove and his last 14 years in Womelsdorf, PA.

American history, often taking his children on tours of historic sites, battlegrounds and museums and capturing these
special moments on film.

him, offering his council or making a call to someone that could get them out of a situation. And it's possible that his
heart ran on Dunkin' Donuts coffee.

Judson L. Bowers, 98, Payson
Judson L. Bowers, 98 years old, peacefully passed away Easter Sunday, 27 March, 2016, at his home in Payson, AZ. He
was born 6 December 1917 in Detroit, MI to Alva Newell Bowers and Nettie Mae Shockey. He is predeceased by; his
parents; siblings, Avonell Smith, Alberta Prewitt, Howard Bowers, and Alva Bowers; wife Agnes Blair Bowers; daughter,
Susan Bowers Austin. Judson is survived by his children, Judson Bowers, Jr. (Cathy) of Apache Junction, AZ, Roxey W.
Bowers (Judy) of Payson, AZ, Kay A. Houghton (Bill) of Payson, AZ, and Robert A. Bowers (Karen) of Surprise, AZ.
Dad was a man of many talents. Quitting school after 8th grade amidst the Great Depression, he "rode the rails" with
a friend for a while then returned home in Michigan to find work anywhere he could. The CCC program in northern
Michigan helped him to focus on the value of honest work. Meeting and marrying the love of his life, Agnes, was the
best thing that ever happened to Dad. Mother taught school while Dad worked in various auto plants in the Detroit area.
He met Henry Ford several times.
After our family settled in the small town of New Baltimore, MI, Dad found his niche by serving in various
government and civic capacities; taking his unloaded guns to school in an after-school program (which he created) and
taught the students the value of gun safety, creating an Education Fund for students who could not afford to attend
college on their own, serving as an auxiliary police officer, was town Planning Commission president, owning the town
newspaper, etc. Fishing and hunting were his second and third loves. He and Mother drove the Alaskan Hwy. 4 times,
fishing along the way. After retiring, they moved to Cherry, AZ for many years, then to Dewey, AZ, and finally to Payson,
AZ. Dad found a hobby in hot-air ballooning and became a balloon observer in Japan, Europe, England and the USA.
After Mother died in 2010, Dad was never the same again. He missed her dearly and lost much of his desire to build,
to hunt and fish. His "spiritual" side was found in nature, with all of its serene beauty and wild life. We children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren will miss this wonderful man. He was one-of-a-kind.
A graveside service will be held at 9:00 a.m. at the Heritage Memorial Park Cemetery, 12000 E. Heritage Memorial
Lane, Prescott Valley. A luncheon will follow at the Prescott Country Club, Dewey, AZ. In lieu of flowers, Father asked
that donations be made to the Agnes Bowers Fund, Julia Randall Elementary School (where Mother tutored), PO Box
919, Payson, AZ 85547.

Anita Lucille Van Steenberg Hardy, age 67
Anita Lucille Van Steenberg Hardy, age 67, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2016, after a brief illness.
The exceptional woman who was known as Anita to her friends, Mrs. Hardy to her students, Tish to her family, and
Mom to her daughter was born in West Palm Beach on April 5, 1948, and had lived in Boynton Beach since the mid1970s.
She was proud of being a sixth generation Floridian. She graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, GA, in 1970
with a B.A. in English. After a brief marriage, she completed her Masters in Education from Nova Southeastern in 1980,
and began her love affair with teaching. Mrs. Hardy lived for those moments when she could see the light of
understanding turn on in her students. During 35 years at Atlantic High School in Delray Beach, she instilled a love of
reading and education into more than 5,000 students, many of whom have gone on to do great things, but all of whom
left her classroom with more confidence in themselves.
Tish and her brother grew up in Palm Beach County when most of it was still scrub and sand. She and her daughter
Jennifer had many amazing adventures together, from every corner of Florida to 46 other states and even throughout
Europe. She was the best problem-solver, gave the best advice, and always supported her family and friends in whatever
they did. She loved photography, travel, raising monarch butterflies in her backyard, and spotting the bright pink
feathers of her beloved roseate spoonbills. She was the best friend, travel companion, confidante, role model and
mother a daughter could ever have.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Hardy of Boynton Beach; one brother John Van Steenberg and his wife Judy
