Greater Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce Business Buzz SUMMER 2016 Volume 2 Issue 4 www.waynesboro.org ● 118 Walnut St., Suite 111, Waynesboro, PA 17268 Inside: 3 Chamber Update 4 A Closer Look At Trident Enterprises 7 Welcome Our Newest Chamber members Capital campaign to fund expansion of the Antietam Humane Society Taking in cats, dogs, and other small pets, the Antietam Humane Society never has a shortage of Build Your Business animals that need care Better and placement. An average working day at the shelter involves caring for 150 animals and placing three pets in homes. To give you an idea of how many animals come through this facility, in 2015, 640 animals were adopted and 120 stray pets were returned to their owners. That’s more than 750 animals. No wonder there’s a need for a larger and more efficient facility! The Antietam Humane Society was formed in 1973 by the Estate of Florence Lyon. The current shelter was built a few years later and has continued to expand incrementally over the years. Feeling the limitations of the building’s size and infrastructure, they have been doing due diligence as to how best to design a building to better meet their current and future needs. Proposed site and floor plans for the Antietam Humane Society Animal Care & Adoption Shelter. 8 As a result of the Society’s exhaustive studies and research, a Capital Campaign was launched last month to construct a new building to house healthy adoptable animals. The existing building will then be used for animals not available for adoption. The additional space will allow the Society to offer boarding, grooming and low-cost spay and neuter services, among other services. If you have questions about Antietam Humane Society or are interested in making a pledge, please contact Andrea Haugh at 717-762-9091. American Legion Post #15 strengthens it ties with Burns Hill Cemetery Ties with Burns Hill go far back, as the Cemetery serves as the resting place for over 300 veterans. Not only that, but General James Bourns, a veteran of the war of 1812, sold his old cabinet shop located on East Main Street to the American Legion in 1947, and the former site of that building is now the home of Post #15. The local Joseph Stickell Post #15 has led the way for Burns Hill to see 2016 as a banner year in its capital campaign with a generous donation of $2,000. For our 2016 capital campaign, the Burns Hill Cemetery Board is seeking funds which will augment operational funds. If you are interested in making a charitable contribution, please call 717-762-5443 for more information. SPRING 2016 9 Capitol News -Congressman Bill Shuster Everyone is touched by the opioid crisis -Congressman Bill Shuster I usually take the opportunity in this newsletter to tell you about some of the latest legislation I am working on in Congress that is important for small businesses and the local chamber. I recently wrote about my service on a joint task force that has put forth new ideas and measures aimed at halting job- killing regulations and growing the economy. These issues are critically important and will always be a top priority, but there is another issue that I wanted to highlight for this edition. It is impacting our businesses, our families, and our community. Since 2000, opioid-related overdose deaths have increased 200 percent nationwide, and Pennsylvania ranks among the highest in the nation of where these deaths are occurring. We all know the victims in this crisis, as families are experiencing tragic losses and our communities are being torn apart. There is no immediate fix to stopping this crisis, and it is not an easy battle. However, I’m working with Republicans and Democrats on combatting this epidemic. It is not going to be a problem completely solved in Washington, DC. It’s going to take our community leaders, our schools, and the local, state, and federal government working together. This effort will save lives and will ultimately lead to a stronger community – something, I know every single member of the Greater Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce cares deeply about. In order to combat overdose-related deaths, I helped pass a major legislative package containing more than a dozen measures. The package increases funding for treatment, reauthorizes substance abuse programs, and provides better access to naloxone -- an opioid overdose reversal drug. The House action also increases federal support for programs benefitting pregnancy and postpartum women, and will help prevent the over prescription of opioids to our veterans in the VA system. While this is a nontraditional topic for a chamber newsletter, everyone is touched by the opioid crisis as we all know victims of it. We must come together – friends, neighbors, local leaders, and elected officials – to shed light on this epidemic and find ways to solve it. This effort will save lives, and our community will be better for it.
