practice (asakeiko) at the famous
Sadogatake-beya. Watching asakeiko is
surreal, and you will feel like you have
stepped back into Japanese history. Many
of the training methods have remained
unchanged since modern sumo took its present form over 400 years ago.
These training methods are not open to the public and are steeped in
tradition. Practice is intense, and you will get a real feel for just how hard these
wrestlers train every day getting ready for the next tournament.
After practice, you will get to eat chanko-nabe while the wrestlers serve you!
Chanko-nabe is a traditional sumo “soup” made of broth and vegetables, with
healthy helpings of chicken, beef or pork. Stablemaster Oyakata (formerly
Koto-no-waka) will sit and talk to you about sumo, his stable, and answer any

Inspired by the beautiful four seasons in
Japan, this year’s quilt features a Japanese
garden in each season. Sunlight is
reflecting on the surface of the summer
pond where three koi swim and water lily
flowers blossom. Colorful leaves add a
touch of autumn to the landscape. There
are toro (stone lantern) and jizo
(guardians of children and travel) covered
by snow in the winter backdrop, together
with pine trees which symbolize bliss or
perpetual youth and longevity. Further
back in the picture, we see sakura (cherry
blossom) in full bloom, which is the typical
spring scenery of Japan. Using antique
kimono and obi silk fabric, this quilt has
cut out a picturesque Japanese four
seasons and framed them perfectly.

Sadanoshin, a character of the play “Koi

artwork, portraits showing the upper half
of the body is called “Okubi-e”.

Ukiyoe - One Hundred Famous Views of Edo
“One Hundred Famous Views of Edo” is a
series of ukiyo-e printed created over the
period from 1856 to 1858 by Ukiyo-e
Painter, Utagawa Hiroshige. This is his
latest years’ artwork and HIroshige
dedicated his rest of life for the creation.
Nihombashi is a starting point of Edo Five
Routes known as “Gokaido”. Boats loaded
a lot for the fish head for the river port
crossing the Nihombashi River. The row of
stalls in the foreground is a fish market
and the peddlers may sell tunas. This
artwork shows an early morning scene at
the energetic port in Nihombashi , the
center of Edo.

Western Tibetan Mandala
The blue central figure at the left side is
Vajradhara. The red central figure on the
right side is Vira Vajradharma. Slightly
above the two central figures is a Tibetan
lama, who is likely to be Ngorchen
Kunga Zangpo, the founder of the Ngor
sub-school of the Sakya Tradition.
The original mandala of this replica is
from Ngari in West Tibet (late17c-early
18c). Ngari district, the most western part
of Tibet, was where an ancient kingdom of
Guge that focused on reconstruction of
Buddhism had once enjoyed prosperity. In
this former center of western Tibet,
colorful murals from about a thousand
years are preserved in the temples that
became cultural heritages. This mandala is strongly influenced by the Guge
tradition and also receive an influence of Persian arabesque patterns, and the
gods are also decorated with turquoise colored arabesque.

Most Tibetan art was created in
connection with the complex rituals and
meditational practices of Vajrayana
Buddhism (the Diamond Path), in which
mandalas (cosmic diagrams) are
employed as visual representations of the
sacred realms inhabited by a host of
deities. The extraordinary mandala is
from a series of paintings that illustrate
mandalas from the Vajravali (Diamond
Garland) text. They were commissioned
by the monk of the Ngor monastery. Then
the series of mandalas had been very
popular in wide area of Tibet. The original
mandala of this replica is made in Lhasa in
early 20c. In this highly complex and
elaborate work, four individual mandalas
have been incorporated into an all-encompassing mandala of the Five
Pancharaksha Goddesses. The upper-left mandala depicts these goddesses,
popular deities for protection against sickness, misfortune, and calamity. The
upper-right mandala depicts the golden goddess of wealth, Vasudhara,
accompanied by eighteen deities,

Complete triptych set “Matsu, Take, Ume”
from “ Friendly Garden Series” by Toshi
Yoshida, limited-edition, dated 1980 and
had signed in pencil.
The title translates as “ Pine, Bamboo,
Plum”, the trees depicted in the landscape
print. Matsu, Take, Ume appear
throughout Japanese art, literature and
folklore and as the symbols of resistance
to hardship. Both pine and bamboo remain evergreen in winter, while the
plum is among the first trees to blossom, even with snow on the ground,
signifying a bright future.
Artist: Toshi Yoshida,1911-1995 was the eldest son of woodblock artist Hiroshi
Yoshida, patriarch of the famed Yoshida woodblock print-making family. Like
his father he undertook extensive world travels to such destinations as
America, Canada, India, Africa, Australia and even Antarctica, chronicling his
tours in art. Most of his print subjects are focused on landscapes and scenes of
fading “ Old Japan”. Toshi reached the same level of fame as his father , his
work in the collection of famous museums.

Toyohara Kunichika is a Japanese
woodblock print artist who worked
successfully from the end of the Edo
period to the Meiji period. This print
shows the four Kabuki actors in the play
Ume Kyôdai Naniwa Senki, performed at
the Nakamura Theater in the first month
of 1872. This scene is known as “Keppan-dori (Blood oath requirement)” from
the famous story “Nanba Senki (Tales from the siege of Osaka).” The character
depicted on the left panel is Kimura Nagato no Kami (Kimura Shigenari). This
young samurai is giving back the blood oath without flinching to the old crafty
samurai on the center panel, Tojo Ujiie-ko (Tokugawa Ieyasu) who is on the
enemy’s side.

Print depicts nori seaweed harvesting off
the coast of Shinagawa near Samezu, now
the location of Tokyo’s drivers’ license
testing facility. Nori from Tokyo Bay was
prize as the best in Japan during that era
and harvested at low tide. The name
Samezu, or “Shark Sandbar” in Japanese,
comes from an ancient legend that a
shark washed ashore here in 1251 and
fishermen found a statue of the Buddhist
Kannon, the deity of mercy, in its belly. Today this stretch of coast is mostly
filled in.
Artist: Utagawa (Ando) Hiroshige, 1797-1858, was considered the last great
master of Japan’s ukiyo-e woodblock art. Hiroshige is best known for his
landscapesHis last great series Meisho Edo Hyakkei, One Hundred Famous
Views of Edo, is considered as one of his greatest masterpieces.
