Solid Gold June 2009 June 2009 Solid Gold in the driver’s seat with Frank Hodges, President Can you believe it is June already! This year has flown by or should I say raced by. With June comes the greatest endurance race of all races “The 24 Heures Du Mans” This year is the 77th season for Le Mans. The race will be held over the 13th and 14th of June. So far the ACO has received 82 applications for the 55 grid positions. The Flying Lizard Motorsports team campaigning a 2009 997 GT3 RSR was among the fifteen teams to receive an automatic invitation to this prestigious event. Good luck to the Flying Lizard Motorsports team in LM GT2 and all the other teams contesting Porsches at the circuit de Sarthe. Closer to home, stateside, club members Denny Long, Matt Shaw and Jade Buford continue to perform well in their racing programmes this year. For the 2009 racing season Denny acquired a 2003 996 GT3 Cup car and placed 1st in class in his campaign at Road Atlanta during the HSR Walter Mitty. Denny races in the Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Rolex GrandAm series as well as PCA club racing. Matt Shaw recently acquired Denny Long’s 1993 993 RS America and also campaigns in HSR Rolex Grand-Am. Jade Buford has signed on with RSR Motorsports Team driving a Mini Cooper S in the Rolex Grand-Am KONI Challenge series. Congratulations guys on your acquisitions and accomplishments. We hope the checkered flag becomes your close friend this season. The club continues to accelerate forward. We just completed our first Drivers Education event at Talladega Gran Prix raceway in Munford Alabama. All who participated had a wonderful time and were very complimentary in their critique and comments back to us. Drivers and instructors came from all over the Southeast to participate with us. Thank you all for helping make our first DE a memorable and successful event. The month of May also saw us host a new member mixer at Sambuca Restaurant in the gulch area of downtown Nashville. Once again we had a high turnout on a beautiful evening. Porsche of Nashville gave away a Porsche golf bag – congratulations Lynn Gratkowski. Club members new and old made new friends as well as reaffirmed old acquaintances. The TN tubs once again held a premier concours and BBQ at Cal Turner’s Brush Pines farm. For all who braved the threat and realisation of weather the collection of cars was awesome. The 356 carrel held some prime examples of coupes, cabriolets, and roadsters. Other Marques were well represented as well – Ruf, Aston Martin, Ferrari, and BMW. How often does one get to see a BMW M1, a Ferrari 512, a Porsche Carrera GT, and an Aston Martin DBS all sitting together? The club leaders are working to publish the summer and fall drives. If these drives are half as fun as the spring drive to Lynchburg and Jack Daniels you won’t want to miss these. Please check our website often for the latest and most complete list of activities. This month the club meeting will return to the Porsche of Nashville showroom. James Corlew and Anita Leonard have a wonderful evening planned for us. I hope to see you at our events during the second half of the season. The leadership team has been working hard to assemble a diverse collection of activities to ensure we provide something for all. As always, we want your feedback on activities, meeting venues, speakers, and more. From his first weekend at Porsche Sport Driving School in March of 2006, to his first overall win at a National PCA Club Race at Virginia International Raceway in August of '08, Jade Buford has impressed coaches and competitors alike. At the conclusion of that winning weekend at VIR Buford was awarded the Novice Award for best young driver as well as the Worker's Choice Award for outstanding driver of the weekend. "He did a good job," said Porsche Sport Driving School Instructor and RSR Motorsports hot shoe Owen Trinkler. "That was a good race for him to understand, it's different being a leader rather than chasing somebody. To lead it and run consistent laps - it was a good way for him to finish the year," Trinkler added. Buford got his first taste of the Mini Cooper S recently at the Daytona test days: "The Mini is a great car," he said. "It's braking and handling is out of this world. " There will be many new tracks to learn and it all begins for Buford at the "Fresh From Florida 200" at Daytona Interanational Speedway on January 22, 23 when the twelve-race championship series begins. As a rookie, Buford is keeping his priorities in order. "My goal, first of all, is to bring the car home, and then to bring home a win or some podium finishes," he says. "It's going to be a good year for RSR all the way around," says team veteran Trinkler. "As Jade Buford keeps developing you may see two Minis battling for a win." *** Solid Gold June 2009 Porsches in the Movies D - H I Am Sam 911 In Car 956 Joy Kid, The King of the Mountain Kiss the Girls K2 Lady Bugs Last Chase, The 956 356 996 Cab, 356 Speedster 356 911 356 911 917 Last Dance (1996) 911 Targa Le Mans Legally Blonde 917, 911 Boxster Leonard Part 6 928 Life is a House 911 Lifeguard Local Hero 1983 Looker 914’s, 911’s Love Potion #9 Marque of a Legend Martial Art II Mask Matador, The 930 Matrix, The 944 Matrix III 911 Middle Age Crazy 928 Mission Impossible 2 Monkey Shines 911 Cabriolet 928 964 Speedster Michelle Pfeiffer drives this newer 911 entire video starring Bruce Willis racing up and down Mulholland Drive Morgan Freeman drives a black 911 1-2 scenes stars Lee Majors. Neiland Pennington, Musik-Stadt Member June 2009 June 2009 Solid Gold Solid Gold June 2009 Porsche board still favors merger with Volkswagen 1947 to 1950 Porsche number 1, Coupe and cabriolet Porsche’s board of management said Monday that it still favors a merger with Volkswagen and doesn’t want to limit the potential deal to a specific time frame. The Porsche board released a statement that said: “We are convinced that the targeted integrated car-manufacturing group is the best industrial solution for all stakeholders involved. That is the case for the companies as well as for the respective workforce. Thus we do not want to put anybody under time pressure.” Shortly before the end of the 2nd World War, the Porsche company emigrated to Austria. It was in Gmünd in the state of Kärnten that Ferry Porsche began to realise the idea of a sporty Volkswagen. His father had long had similar plans, but was a prisoner of war in France at this time. In 1947 a cabriolet was produced with a tubular frame chassis, aluminium body and a centrally located tuned-up VW Beetle engine. The Swiss car magazine Automobil Revue tested this Porsche number 1 and was full of praise, remarking “this is the sort of performance we envisage for a modern car.” By GREG MIGLIORE, autoweek.com Porsche also said its workers are still supporting the potential deal with VW. Porsche issued the statement in response to concerns by the VW works council over the financial state of Porsche. Niche sports-car maker Porsche owns 51 percent of voting stock in the much larger VW, which is the biggest car company in Europe. Porsche has been forced to dial back its takeover attempts, and its finances have been have been a point of contention. Porsche’s statement said it maintains a double-digit operating margin. www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/classic/world/models/ The positive response to the roadster spurred Ferry Porsche on. A small series of sports cars was produced, but in a design which made more practical use of the available space. The engine was relocated to the rear, as on the Beetle, and the tubular structure was abandoned in favour of a sheet-metal frame. There was a coupé and a cabriolet variant, and the bodies were hand-crafted in aluminium. The original version of the 356 was born, its sporty performance and speed immediately causing a stir. With only 40 bhp of power under its bonnet, it reached a top speed of around 140 km/h. The production run for this series began at the end of 1948 and finished two years later. In all, around 50 cars were delivered. The lightweight and torsionally rigid Gmünd cars proved excellent for the race track. I would like to sell them to someone who appreciates the “brand”. There are 2 framed and signed pen and ink drawings by H. Shoemaker of Porsche race cars. These were done in 1969-70 and are print #111. There are 6 matted and framed prints of pictures which came with “Christophorus” calendars in the early 1970’s. In 1975 I selected my favorite images and framed them to match. They were prominently displayed in my house for several years. There are 43 unframed prints - the remainder of the calendar prints for a 4 year period in the early 70’s. Most of these are in good to excellent shape. There are a few posters from Sebring races in ‘67-’75 featuring Porsches. I am in Nashville and prefer to deliver rather than ship articles like this. If you think your members would be interested in any of the prints I have described please give them this e-mail address to contact me. All of the framed prints are in excellent shape and tastefully presented. “Nancy B.
