Welcome to all of you from the Senior Staff. We hope you find many things to interest you in this newsletter and
that you find a home away from home here at the Center.
Troopons is a “Support Our Troops” program which provides Manufacturer coupons for food, non-food, baby, and
pet items to military families. Manufacturer coupons for individual products (not particular stores or restaurants) can
be sent to support our troops and their families. Please cut them into individual coupons before turning them in and
separate into these three categories: food, non-food, and baby/pet items. We have a box in the Senior Center and
Anne Hollek mails them to the troops. Military personnel can use the coupons on the bases even if they are up to two
months past their expiration dates. Thank you for your dedication to this project.
Those who traveled with us on The Indiana Covered Bridge Tour enjoyed the beautiful bridges, perfect weather, and dinner at the historic Turkey Run Restaurant.

The Holiday parties will be over by the time you receive this. The entire Township staff work very hard
to make sure each person who attended had a wonderful experience. We hope you enjoyed the day you were our
guest and that your entire holiday season was special. We look forward to getting back to our normal schedules
in January and hope that you start your year by joining one of the many programs and events in this newsletter.
Many of you have asked when the newsletter will be ready. Our target for having the newsletter ready to mail or
hand out is always the 15th of the month before you will need it.
PARKING: Please r emember that ALL par king spots in the cir cle now need a handicapped placard or plates in order for you to park there. If you don’t have one, and cannot walk from the parking lot, leave
your car in front of our doors and ask one of the staff to park it for you. We will get it for you when you are
ready to leave the Center. Thank you for your cooperation.
Lost & Found: Our lost and found is over flowing with coats, sweater s, gloves, glasses, jewelr y, and
even shoes. If you misplaced something (even a long time ago), please stop by and take a look. We keep smaller items in the office so ask to see them. Anything still left in March, we will put on the free table or throw out.
Note to Bingo players: We would appr eciate if mor e of you could please br ing small bills (ones and
fives). We don’t and are not able to keep enough change to accommodate all the tens and twenties we have been
receiving. Thank you for your help with this.
I wish all of you a very happy and healthy New Year and look forward to seeing more and more of you
here at the Senior Center.

If you went with us to the Civil War Museum this spring, you were lucky to experience the fabulous one woman
performance by the “wife of the Governor of Wisconsin”. She did a fantastic, authentic, and moving presentation.
We were so impressed, we invited another actor from the museum here to the Senior Center to give another performance. Join us on Monday, January 25th from 1:00 to 2:30 PM to hear from Abraham Lincoln’s law partner
from Springfield, IL. William Herndon will tell how the two friends worked side by side. After Lincoln’s death,
Herndon wrote Lincoln’s biography, interviewing many people from Lincoln’s childhood and collecting their stories. You will feel the joy as he tells us about his friend’s first attempt at public speaking and the pain as he discusses his death. There will be a question and answer session with the professional actor in character and with the
actor as his modern day self. This one-person performance will make the 19th century come alive here at the Senior Center. Registration begins Tuesday, January 5th. The cost is only $5.00. We will serve snacks after the performance. You will be transported to another century. What a great way to spend a dreary January afternoon.
Join us on Wednesday, February 3rd for our first ever Mardi Gras party. We will supply the beads and the masks,
you bring your party spirit. The menu includes: Marinated charbroiled chicken breast, New Orleans red beans

will perform a Rat Pack/Vegas & Bourbon Street theme to celebrate Mardi Gras! Singing songs by Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Harry Connick, Jr., Paul Anka, Elvis, and Tom Jones. We have been delighted by John at
other luncheons. He is a world class entertainer. You will love his vocals. The cost for the entire afternoon is
$10.00. Lunch will be served at Noon. Registration begins Tuesday, January 19th and ends on Jan. 29th.

This article is a reminder that scam artists are everywhere and constantly working on new ways to prey on
innocent people. In a time where sensitive personal information can be transferred with the click of a button, it is
imperative that everyone is aware of the dangers and scams that exist. Being aware is the first step in ensuring your
safety. Some of the popular scams right now include:

Someone claiming to be a police or government agent saying they are coming to arrest you for overdue
taxes or skipping out on jury duty but you can avoid this by sending them money.

You get a call or a pop up on your computer claiming to be from Microsoft or Apple about a problem
with your computer which can be fixed by allowing “tech support” access to your hard drive. Instead
they install malware and are able to steal your personal information.

You get a call from a company claiming a concerned family member ordered you a medical alert device
in case you have an emergency. They ask for your credit card or banking information.

You get a call from someone who claims to be your grandchild or other relative who was injured,
robbed, or arrested while traveling overseas and needs money immediately.

Letters from an Awards Notification Commission asking for you to send a small amount of money to receive a huge amount are scams.

Someone supposedly calling from Medicare saying you qualify for free equipment from Medicare but
they need your Medicare number. Medicare already has your number. Don’t give it out over the phone.
Always be alert when a stranger asks for your private information. Many scams promise a large reward for
what seems to be minimal work or investment on your part. It is illegal for anyone to require an upfront payment to
claim a lottery or sweepstakes prize. Many scammers may say that in order to receive a given benefit from them,
you must wire money to them. NEVER WIRE MONEY TO STRANGERS.
Regardless of where someone says they are calling from, NEVER SHARE SENSITIVE PERSONAL INFORMATION WITH STRANGERS. Remember , if you ar e ever feeling uncomfor table while speaking on
the phone, YOU CAN ALWAYS HANG UP.
Protect your money, property and personal safety by following a few tips:
 Don’t let anyone come into your home unless you have a prescheduled appointment. You have the right to refuse to open your own door.

Don’t pay cash to anyone who comes to your home claiming to be with a utility company or other provider.
 Confirm any special offers with your service provider — using the number on your bill or their website. Be suspicious of a promotional flyer offering service from multiple providers. Competitors don’t advertise together.
 Pitch it properly. When disposing of personal information, it should be destroyed in a manner that prevents recreation or reconstruction (shredding/pulverizing/burning). This includes destroying/erasing data that may be located on electronics before disposal. Watch your newsletters for free shredding events we offer here at the Township.
To report any telephone scams, contact the Illinois Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Hotline at 1-800-386-5438.
Our best advice: If you have caller ID and don’t recognize the name of the person calling, don’t answer. If
you do answer and don’t know the person, HANG UP. If you have any questions about anything, please feel
free to call the Senior Center.

secret. But a chance encounter with charismatic philanthropist Ellis Jones reignites her passion for

January 22nd: “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” Dr ama. Rated PG-13 for thematic elements, sexual content, drug material, and language. Gr eg is a high school senior tr ying to

January 29th: “Ricki and the Flash” Comedy/Dr ama. Rated PG-13 for thematic material,

morning, Margo is gone, disappeared without leaving word with anyone. Or has she? Q starts to

friend, is unable to remain in service. Shipped stateside, the only human he seems willing to connect with is Kyle's teenage brother, Justin, who has issues of his own and isn't interested in taking
care of his brother's troubled dog. 1 hour 51 minutes.
February 26th: “Trainwreck” Comedy/Romance. Rated R for strong sexual content, nudity,
language and some drug use. Amy Schumer star s as a magazine wr ite whose father dr illed
into her the idea that monogamy isn’t realistic. She lives her life by that credo and remains free
from romantic commitment. When she finds her self falling for the subject of the new article
she’s writing, a charming and successful sports doctor played by Bill Hader, she resists at first.
2 hrs 5 min
Gurnee AARP meets the second Thursday of each month. On Thursday, January 14th at Noon they will have their
Holiday Party Potluck. Everyone is welcome. You must bring a dish to share with the group. The main entrée is
provided. After lunch they play a fun game. Note the change of time.
The speaker for the February 11th meeting will be the Lake County Recorder of Deeds, Mary Ellen Vanderventer.
Her presentation will be on “Property Check”. This free service alerts you if a document is opened in your name or
on your property. This program helps prevent property and mortgage fraud which is a fast growing problem.
This meeting will begin at it’s regular time of 1:00 PM. Refreshments are served. Everyone is welcome. No need
to sign up.
Note: When you ar e scheduling a r ide with one of the companies, please make sur e , if you need a r ide back
home, that the cab company is planning to pick you back up at that location. We recently had a situation where
someone was dropped off in Ingleside but when she called to be picked up, she was told that was outside their service area and they would not go back for her. Also, call and check before your trip if you are going to the Milwaukee airport. All of the companies can take you to Mitchell Field but not all of them are licensed to pick up there.
Please use the numbers on the back of the tickets to arrange rides. If you call taxi drivers directly, make sure they
will still honor the tickets. Sometimes a driver changes companies and that company does not honor the tickets.
If you have ANY problems with any of the cab companies, please call Joanne Adams at 847-244-1101 ext. *503.
It is most helpful to have the cab number and date of travel when reporting a problem with a particular cab driver
or dispatcher.
