In October and November, 2015 we added 35 new members. They are: Betty Barrett, Dee & Norb Bora, Gloria & John Brda, Urbanita & Winston Casis, Lillian Damron, Kathleen Dicello, Raymond & Sandy Forster, Diane Friel, Herbert & Peggy Garner, Bonnie Goggin, Barbara Harris, Judy Henderson, John & Linda Holden, Glen & Karen Ludwig, Howard McCann, Cris Pascual, George Pavlos, Angelina & Avelino Reyes, Ned Ricks, Irving & Nancy Sheldon, Dennis & Nancy Sowka, Anita & Edward Tenison, and Becky Wolf. Welcome to all of you from the Senior Staff. We hope you find many things to interest you in this newsletter and that you find a home away from home here at the Center. Troopons is a “Support Our Troops” program which provides Manufacturer coupons for food, non-food, baby, and pet items to military families. Manufacturer coupons for individual products (not particular stores or restaurants) can be sent to support our troops and their families. Please cut them into individual coupons before turning them in and separate into these three categories: food, non-food, and baby/pet items. We have a box in the Senior Center and Anne Hollek mails them to the troops. Military personnel can use the coupons on the bases even if they are up to two months past their expiration dates. Thank you for your dedication to this project. Those who traveled with us on The Indiana Covered Bridge Tour enjoyed the beautiful bridges, perfect weather, and dinner at the historic Turkey Run Restaurant. We hope you enjoyed the day you were our guest and that your entire holiday season was special. We look forward to getting back to our normal schedules in January and hope that you start your year by joining one of the many programs and events in this newsletter. Many of you have asked when the newsletter will be ready. Our target for having the newsletter ready to mail or hand out is always the 15th of the month before you will need it. PARKING: Please r emember that ALL par king spots in the cir cle now need a handicapped placard or plates in order for you to park there. If you don’t have one, and cannot walk from the parking lot, leave your car in front of our doors and ask one of the staff to park it for you. We will get it for you when you are ready to leave the Center. Thank you for your cooperation. Lost & Found: Our lost and found is over flowing with coats, sweater s, gloves, glasses, jewelr y, and even shoes. If you misplaced something (even a long time ago), please stop by and take a look. We keep smaller items in the office so ask to see them. Anything still left in March, we will put on the free table or throw out. Note to Bingo players: We would appr eciate if mor e of you could please br ing small bills (ones and fives). We don’t and are not able to keep enough change to accommodate all the tens and twenties we have been receiving. Thank you for your help with this. I wish all of you a very happy and healthy New Year and look forward to seeing more and more of you here at the Senior Center. Joanne Adams If you went with us to the Civil War Museum this spring, you were lucky to experience the fabulous one woman performance by the “wife of the Governor of Wisconsin”. In a time where sensitive personal information can be transferred with the click of a button, it is imperative that everyone is aware of the dangers and scams that exist. Being aware is the first step in ensuring your safety. Some of the popular scams right now include: Someone claiming to be a police or government agent saying they are coming to arrest you for overdue taxes or skipping out on jury duty but you can avoid this by sending them money. You get a call or a pop up on your computer claiming to be from Microsoft or Apple about a problem with your computer which can be fixed by allowing “tech support” access to your hard drive. Instead they install malware and are able to steal your personal information. You get a call from a company claiming a concerned family member ordered you a medical alert device in case you have an emergency. They ask for your credit card or banking information. You get a call from someone who claims to be your grandchild or other relative who was injured, robbed, or arrested while traveling overseas and needs money immediately. Letters from an Awards Notification Commission asking for you to send a small amount of money to receive a huge amount are scams. Someone supposedly calling from Medicare saying you qualify for free equipment from Medicare but they need your Medicare number. Medicare already has your number. Don’t give it out over the phone. Always be alert when a stranger asks for your private information. Many scams promise a large reward for what seems to be minimal work or investment on your part. It is illegal for anyone to require an upfront payment to claim a lottery or sweepstakes prize. Many scammers may say that in order to receive a given benefit from them, you must wire money to them. NEVER WIRE MONEY TO STRANGERS. Regardless of where someone says they are calling from, NEVER SHARE SENSITIVE PERSONAL INFORMATION WITH STRANGERS. Remember , if you ar e ever feeling uncomfor table while speaking on the phone, YOU CAN ALWAYS HANG UP. Protect your money, property and personal safety by following a few tips: Don’t let anyone come into your home unless you have a prescheduled appointment. You have the right to refuse to open your own door. Don’t pay cash to anyone who comes to your home claiming to be with a utility company or other provider. Confirm any special offers with your service provider — using the number on your bill or their website. Be suspicious of a promotional flyer offering service from multiple providers. Competitors don’t advertise together. Pitch it properly. When disposing of personal information, it should be destroyed in a manner that prevents recreation or reconstruction (shredding/pulverizing/burning). This includes destroying/erasing data that may be located on electronics before disposal. Watch your newsletters for free shredding events we offer here at the Township. To report any telephone scams, contact the Illinois Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Hotline at 1-800-386-5438. Our best advice: If you have caller ID and don’t recognize the name of the person calling, don’t answer. If you do answer and don’t know the person, HANG UP. If you have any questions about anything, please feel free to call the Senior Center. 6 Fun With Spanish - Notice: This class is on hiatus until Thursday, April 7th. We recently had a situation where someone was dropped off in Ingleside but when she called to be picked up, she was told that was outside their service area and they would not go back for her. Also, call and check before your trip if you are going to the Milwaukee airport. All of the companies can take you to Mitchell Field but not all of them are licensed to pick up there.
