toxic, poison, combustible, corrosive, flammable or irritant. The Agency’s Household Hazardous Waste program for Sonoma
County residents and qualified businesses provides proper disposal for hazardous products when they are no longer wanted.

SONOMA COUNTY RECYCLING GUIDE
What is CRV?
Beverage containers labeled
CRV (California Redemption
Value) can be redeemed at
designated centers for
5¢ per container under
24 oz. and 10¢ per container
24 oz. and larger.
CRV only—it’s
the law
State law requires recycling
centers to pay California
Redemption Value (CRV)
refunds for loads that contain
ONLY eligible CRV beverage
containers.
Non-CRV materials must be
removed from the load, or at
the discretion of the recycling
center, the load may be
rejected or receive only scrap
value.
Customers may still request
to be paid by count for up to
50 CRV beverage containers of
each material type: 50 glass,
50 aluminum, 50 plastic in
one day.

Composting, nature's own way of recycling, is the controlled decomposition of organic material such as
leaves, twigs, grass clippings and vegetable food waste. Compost is the soil amendment product that
results from proper composting. You can make your own compost at home—pile

No compostable plastics or plastics in your curbside yard debris cart.
Compostable plastics include compostable garbage bags, clear cups, utensils and plastic garden pots.
Problems with compostable plastics are:
• They degrade too slowly for the municipal composting program.
• They are not allowed for use in products for organic agriculture.
Compost made from curbside yard debris and veggie scraps
by Sonoma Compost Company is listed by the OMRI (Organic

SONOMA COUNTY RECYCLING GUIDE
To make it more convenient for residents and businesses to dispose of their waste properly, the Sonoma County Waste Management
Agency is partnering with Goodwill Industries of the Redwood Empire to conduct free electronics collection events. For a schedule of
monthly electronic recycling events, see the back cover of this publication or visit www.recyclenow.org or call the Eco-Desk 565-3375.

FLUORESCENT LAMPS & BALLASTS
Why do fluorescent lamps need
special disposal? Fluorescent lamps contain mercury
www.recyclenow.org
Eco-Desk 565-DESK(3375)
vapor. Although the amount of mercury
vapor in each lamp is small, care should
still be taken in handling and disposing
of fluorescent lamps.
All kinds of fluorescent lamps
are accepted at the Household
Toxics Facility; see pg. 2.
What if a lamp breaks?
Lowe's www.lowes.com
• Open a window and leave the room
for 15 minutes or more.
• Turn off central heat/air conditioning.
• Collect the pieces using a stiff piece of
paper, such as an index card.
• Pat the area with the sticky side of
packing tape to remove glass shards.
• Put all material into a sealed
container.
• Broken bulbs are accepted at the
Household Toxics Facility; see pg. 2.
About ballasts: Polychlorinated
biphenyls (PCBs) were discontinued for use in
fluorescent ballasts manufactured after 1979. Typically, ballasts
that do not contain PCBs are labeled with a sticker. Ballasts without labels
must be disposed of as hazardous waste. While non-PCB ballasts can be
disposed of as garbage, it is environmentally preferable to recycle them as
scrap metal; see listing below. Do not put ballasts in the curbside recycling
cart.

The following
restaurants accept
10 gallons or less of
clean strained vegetable oil.
Oil becomes biodiesel for use in
cars and trucks.
Congealed animal fats, such as
bacon grease, can be disposed of
in the garbage.
How to drop off vegetable
cooking oil:
• Visit restaurants during
daylight and business hours.
• Ask for assistance in locating
the cooking oil/grease
collection barrel.
• Always replace the lid
on the barrel. Rainwater
contaminates the oil!
• Clean up any spills.
• Take home your container for
reuse or recycling. Do not
