Notice is hereby given to the qualified electors of the School District of Markesan that on the 28th day of July,
2014 in the Markesan Middle School Multi-Purpose Room, the annual district budget hearing and the annual district
meeting will be held as follows:
1. 8:00 p.m. – budget hearing will be held in accordance with §65.90, Wisconsin Statutes.
2. Immediately following, the annual school district meeting will be held in accordance with §120.08, Wisconsin

SCOPE would like to send out a giant THANK YOU to Shel
Zacharias, Owner of Leahy’s in Fairwater, for donating gift
certificates, chips, plates, napkins, cups, and so much more to
SCOPE for use at our events. Without donations like this,
SCOPE would not be able to do all that we do. Thanks Shel!
Also, SCOPE is looking for new members for the coming
school year! If you have been thinking about volunteering for
something but you just aren’t sure what to do or where to look,
come to the next meeting for SCOPE! We look forward to
your ideas and input! Our next meeting will be at 6:00 p.m. on
Wednesday, August 6, 2014 in the high school cafeteria.

BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING AGENDA
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Education of the Markesan District Schools is scheduled
for Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the middle school multi-purpose room.
Agenda items will include the following: handbooks, parent contract for transportation to nonpublic schools,
2013-2014 budget, 2014-2015 budget, referendum update and spring extra-curricular activity reports.
SUMMER READING ALERT!
“Children who do not read over the summer will lose more than two months of reading
Did you know? achievement. By the end of 6th grade, children who lose reading skills over the summer
will be two years behind their classmates.” --RIF (Reading is Fundamental)
Parents and students, PLEASE don’t let your reading slide this summer. Pick up any reading
material: magazines, newspapers, novels, picture books, cereal boxes, comics…..ANYTHING!
The key is to establish a routine that includes daily reading.
Did you know that there are amazing free resources available providing interesting reading
materials? YouTube and iTunes give you access to some great free audio books. Sit down with
a copy of the book before you, follow along, and listen as someone reads it aloud. Have a Kindle, iPad, or
personal computer? You can access free Ebooks through the Winnefox Library System if you have a library
card for one of the local libraries.
Some great websites exist that help you find new titles that will engage readers of all ages. Goodreads.com
is a free site that allows you to rate the books you’ve already read, make a list of books you want to read, and
get recommendations based on your previous reading habits. Barnesandnoble.com has a great opportunity.
Read eight books and record on a journal, and you will receive a free book. The website of your local library
will also provide great information on books and summer reading activities.
Students, keep those “reading muscles” limbered up! Going back to school in
September will be a better experience because you will be in better shape. Parents,
help them do so by making reading a priority this summer.

KURT TERBEEST MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Thomas Lawson and Dustin Baggett were each awarded $500.00 scholarships, thanks to the TerBeest family
and the Markesan Lions Club. The Markesan Lions Club recently sponsored the Kurt TerBeest Memorial
Golf Tournament, with the funds raised solely for scholarships in Kurt’s name. The two recipients will be
furthering their education in the auto/truck/mechanics field this fall. The Markesan Lions apologizes to the
TerBeest family for inadvertently leaving the awards off the list during the recent Kiwanis Awards Program.
HIGH SCHOOL ART AND FOCUS ON THE FARM
Mrs. Jayne Dillie’s high school art students painted six
double-sided billboards for the “Green Lake County Focus on
the Farm.” It took a lot of time and effort from the diligent art
students and they succeeded in completing the signs before
school ended for summer. The signs will be displayed in
various locations throughout the county.
2014 MARKESAN COMMUNITY BAND
Over one hundred participants marched with the Markesan Community Band on Saturday,
June 14 in the June Dairy Days Parade. The marching band included members of the high
school band, members of the middle school band, alumni, faculty, friends and community
members. Thank you to each one of you for participating in the parade.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
During the month of May, Markesan Elementary participated in the Jump Rope for Heart
program. Jump Rope for Heart is a program from the American Heart Association to help raise
money for research and to bring awareness about cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Heart
disease and stroke are the #1 and #4 killers in America today. They account for almost as many
deaths as all other causes combined.
The students were able to ask for donations during a two-week span. In this time, Markesan
Elementary was able to raise $20,866.50. This amount was simply incredible and blew away our goal of
$3,600. With this amount we were the top fundraising school in our area and fourth in the entire state of
Wisconsin. The money raised will be used to help all people whom are affected by cardiovascular diseases.
In addition to raising money, the students participated in various jumping rope activities during physical
education class such as long rope, short rope, trick jumps, etc. They also learned about staying tobacco free,
eating right, and exercising as a lifestyle. It was a great event for all people involved. We should be proud of
what our students and community were able to accomplish. Thanks for all your support!!!
FOOTBALL PLAYERS
Any high school students interested in playing football:

Fitness Test Outs from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

EIGHTH GRADE PROMOTION
On Friday, June 6, 2014, the Markesan Middle School held an end of the year awards program in
conjunction with the eighth grade promotion. The following awards were presented to middle school 8th grade
students at the ceremony with friends and family sharing in the experience.
Excellence Awards were presented to eighth grade students in recognition of outstanding achievement in
both academic and non-academic disciplines.

deserving of leadership and citizenship recognition during their years at Markesan Middle School. It is
presented in recognition of Mrs. Adelaide Adams, who served many years in the Markesan School District.)
The following 8th grade student at Markesan Middle School has been awarded a certificate for Perfect
Attendance for the 2013-2014 school year: Weston Bergemann.

SIXTH GRADE CAMP
The 2014 sixth grade class and their
teachers would like to thank everyone who
helped make camp an amazing success. The
weather this year was perfect, and we
thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the three
days. Many volunteers from the community
and staff from Markesan District Schools
contributed time and effort to make it a
memorable experience for us. We cannot
express how much we depend on and
appreciate your help.

DIRECTORY INFORMATION RELEASE
ASBESTOS LAW COMPLIANCE NOTIFICATION
According to Board of Education policy, the following
items involving students are considered directory
information and will be made available to the public
upon request: a student’s name; photograph; participation
in officially recognized activities and sports; height and
weight, if a member of an athletic team; dates of attendance;
date of graduation; awards received; the school most
recently previously attended; honor rolls; and scholarships.
As a result of federal legislation (Asbestos Hazard
Emergency Response Act - AHERA), each primary
and secondary school in the nation is required to
complete a stringent inspection for asbestos and to
develop a plan of management for all asbestos
containing building materials. Markesan District
Schools has a goal to be in full compliance with the law
and is following the spirit, as well as the letter of the
law. As a matter of policy, the district shall continue to
maintain a safe and healthful environment for our
community’s youth and employees.
If any parent/guardian objects to or refuses to permit
the district to designate the above listed information as
directory information, they should advise the school
district in writing via a letter addressed to the district
administrator’s office within two weeks after publication of
this newsletter. If you have any questions concerning
directory information, please call the district office at (920)
398-4201.
In keeping with this legislation, all buildings
(including portables and support buildings) owned or
leased by Markesan District Schools were inspected by
EPA accredited inspectors and samples were
analyzed by an independent laboratory. Based on the
inspection, the school prepared, and the state approved,
a comprehensive management plan for the safe and
responsible handling of asbestos within it’s buildings.
NONDISCRIMINATION NOTICE
It is the policy of the Markesan District Schools that no
person may be denied admission to any public school in
this district, or be denied participation in, be denied the
benefits of, or be discriminated against in any curricular,
extra-curricular, pupil service, recreational, or other
program (employment or instructional), or activity
because of the person’s sex, race, national origin,
ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital or parental status,
sexual orientation, or physical, mental, emotional, or
learning disability. Participation in some extra-curricular
programs may be based upon performance criteria and/or
the skill development of a participant.
This policy also prohibits discrimination as defined by
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (sex),
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (race and national
origin), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of
1973. It is the intent of the Markesan District Schools to
comply with both the letter and the spirit of the law in
making certain discrimination does not exist in its
policies, regulations, and operations.
Grievance procedures for Title IX and Section 504 have
been established for students, their parents, and
employees who feel discrimination has been shown by the
Markesan District Schools. Specific complaints of alleged
discrimination under Title IX (sex) and Section 504
(handicap) should be referred to: Mark Nagle, High

This past year Markesan District Schools
conducted the following with respect to its asbestos
containing building materials: continued an operations
and maintenance program. Federal law requires a
periodic walk-through (called “surveillance”) every
six months of each area containing asbestos. In
addition, the law requires all buildings to be reinspected three years after a management plan is in
effect. MacNeil Environmental, Inc. will accomplish
this under contract. Areas where management issues
are noted during inspections and surveillances have
been, and will continue to be, dealt with promptly.
Short-term workers (outside contractors-i.e.,
telephone repair workers, electricians and exterminators)
must be provided information regarding the location of
asbestos in which they may come into contact. All shortterm workers shall contact the lead maintenance person
before commencing work to be given this information.
Markesan District Schools has a list of the location(s)
and type(s) of asbestos containing materials found in
the school building and a description and timetable
for their proper management. A copy of the Asbestos
Management Plan is available for review in the district
office. Questions related to the plan should be directed

WISCONSIN PUBLIC ACT 96 NOTIFICATION
The Markesan School District would like to inform staff, students, parents and the public of the district’s Indoor
Environmental Quality (IEQ) management plan. The plan was initially developed in 2012 and is reviewed as
necessary. The plan was developed as deemed appropriate for the district. This annual publication is part of the
Markesan School District’s communication plan within the IEQ Management plan. Questions and concerns should
be directed to the IEQ coordinator at 920-398-2373. The district office is located at 100 East Vista Boulevard,
Markesan, WI 53946. Copies of the plan are available at the district office for a fee.

Four Yr. Old Kindergarten: 1 box of Kleenex, 1 container of Clorox wipes, 1 refill pack of baby wipes,
4 Elmer’s glue sticks, 1 box of 24 Crayola crayons, 1 set Crayola washable markers (classic colors – 8 or 10
count), 2 – beginner’s pencils, 2 – dry erase markers (blue or black), pocket folder with brads (any color),
Backpack without wheels (2 straps/big enough for a folder), extra set of clothes in a Ziploc bag with child’s name,
snack to share with class (ex: box of crackers, cereal, etc. – please send enough for 18 students), Girls – box of
Ziploc bags, any size, Boys – paper plates, any size.
Kindergarten: Box of 24 crayons, 6– large glue sticks, large box of Kleenex, 2 sets washable markers (8 or 12
basic colors), 4 thick low odor dry erase markers (no yellow), watercolor paint set, 5-inch blunt tip scissors, plastic
pencil box (no pencil cases), back pack (large enough to fit folder in), 2 rectangular container of wet wipes, 1 bottle
hand sanitizer, 2 large pencil erasers, 2 – 4 oz. bottle of white Elmer’s glue, Girls - 1 box Ziploc Bags (snack),
Boys – 1 box Ziploc Bags, (sandwich), 1 container of Clorox wipes, gym shoes to be kept at school, Headphones
(available for purchase from the office for $3.00 or students may bring their own).
Grade 1: 2– spiral notebooks, 3 - large glue sticks, crayons (24), back pack, pencil box, 1 Fiskars scissors, 20 –
pencils (sharpened), large box of Kleenex, 2 – large erasers, 1 empty clean Pringle can, 8 oz. white glue, 2 – yellow
highlighters, 8 or 10 box washable markers, 4 – thick dry erase markers (no yellow), colored pencils, 1 pkg. 3X3
Post It Notes, 1 box of crackers, Clorox Wipes, Girls – Box of pint or quart size Ziploc bags, Boys – Box of gallon
size Ziploc bags, 2 plastic folders with bottom pockets – one should be red, gym shoes to be kept at school – (No white
