Who We Are: The National Nurses Health Institute is an
empowering initiative launched by nurses, dedicated to improving the health of
the nation addressing a range of critically important issues and themes relating
to Health, Wellness and Community. To achieve a healthy nation… we are
starting with those providing the care.
Who Should Attend: Nurses, Physicians, Fitness Coaches,
Clinicians, Social Workers and anyone advocating for a healthier tomorrow!
Educational Format
The conference format includes lectures with Q & A, panel discussions, and a variety of
concurrent sessions.
Statement of Need: Your patients and community members increasingly call on your
advice for diet, nutrition and exercise strategies. Proper diet and exercise are fundamental
building blocks to good health, yet many practitioners lack the basic expertise in nutrition
and exercise to guide their patients.
To meet this growing need, our goal is to provide health practitioners an overview and
practical summary of the latest information on nutrition and health presented by leaders
and experts.
Poster Abstracts
Consider submitting a poster related to health, fitness wellness or evidence based clinical study with implications for nursing
practice on the theme of health fitness wellness of staff or your community. For questions, please email [email protected]

Helene Neville
Helene Neville, Founder of the National Nurses Half Marathon, 5K and National Nurses Health Institute.
A nurse and fitness coach for more than thirty years. In 2010, she wrote and self-published her first book,
Nurses In Shape: The Right Dose! With book in hand, on May 1, 2010, Helene started running from the Pacific
to the Atlantic Ocean. En route, she stopped at hospitals to talk to nurses about how exercise can improve one’s daily
life. On June 15, 2013, she completed her 1,500 mile 45 day run from Vancouver, British Columbia to Tijuana, Mexico.
Helene’s newest book One On The Run, 93 Days Across America shows Helene’s indomitable spirit as a solo female
runner who accomplished a record making – and record breaking – feat of athletic skill as she journeyed across
the southern United States. One on the Run gives people an honest glimpse into her character, leadership skills
and social conscience.
“The National Nurses 5K, Half Marathon and Health Institute Speakers Series is a weekend event by nurses for
everyone. Each day, nurses celebrate their profession for helping others. We recognize our reach is far and wide
which keeps our passion alive. For us, this is more than an investment in a healthy nation — it is an opportunity
to inspire and to be a catalyst for change in all the people we touch. This is a great reason to run or walk an
event founded by nurses.”

Our keynote speaker
is Edna Adan, world-renowned founder
of the Edna Adan University Hospital in Hargeisa, Somaliland. An activist and
pioneer, she was Somalia’s first qualified nurse-midwife and first woman to drive
there; the former First Lady of Somalia; and the former Foreign Minister of
Somaliland. After her husband, the elected prime minister of Somalia, was
overthrown in a coup, she went to work for the World Health Organization. Upon
retirement she used her entire life savings to build the hospital on a site formerly
used as a garbage dump and, during the civil war, a killing field. Somaliland is an
area with one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Over the past
decade, she was able to train several hundred nurses, midwives, and other health
workers so they can provide women with essential basic and comprehensive
obstetric care. Since opening in 2002 more than 14,000 babies have been
born in this non-profit facility. In 2010, she was awarded the French
“Teaching is one of the most empowering things that one

can do for women. If God gives me time, I want to train one
thousand midwives to go to rural areas where the women
