However, no matter how difficult this past season may have seemed, it was nothing compared to the obstacles that had to be overcome by the NHS guest speaker, Angela Lariviere, Youth Empowerment Program Director and mother of Ready alums (Kassandra ’11 and William ’13). Ms Lariviere spoke eloquently about her life as a homeless person and the necessity to see beyond difficulties and always work toward a better life. Her journey may have been perilous indeed but the outcome has been an unquestioned benefit for all of those with whom she interacts. Present at the induction ceremony were the 2013-14 NHS officers: seniors Lauren Rivera, president; Marina Sweet, vice-president; Julia Hall, secretary; Jordan Bair, treasurer; and MacKenzie Atchison, historian. Julia Hall delivered the prayer and pledge and assistant principal Jeri Rod gave the opening remarks, followed by senior Margaret Berkemeyer, who gave the welcoming address, and Lauren 8 Future Business Leaders of America News… Spirit Store! They make great gifts and are a terrific way to show your school spirit at our various sporting events. FBLA plans to be more involved with the Spirit Store in the coming year, helping with inventory, helping to staff the store, and coming up with new and interesting items for sale. Participation will be akin to an internship in retail! More information will be available in our fall issue and on our website/app, but plans are in hand to have another Breakfast of Champions at Bishop Ready. Last year’s event was very successful and moderator Ms Maria Illig is planning another with even more chefs participating. A fund-raiser sponsored by the Ready chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) was held at Chipotle Mexican Grill on April 15. Between 4 and 7 P.M., if a patron mentioned Bishop Ready High School, 50% of that patron’s tab was donated to the school. In those three hours, Bishop Ready managed to fund-raise over $700! Thanks to all who participated and to Chipotle for sponsoring the event! Among the new items in Ready’s Spirit Store this fall with be a rally towel, featuring the Ready knight on a blue background. Towels will be $5 and will go quickly so be sure to be first in line at the M Seniors Start New Tradition embers of the senior class began what they hope will be a new senior tradition— they buried a rock from their Kairos retreat, to symbolize both the importance of their faith here at Ready and that our faith is our cornerstone, showing that they will always be a part of the foundation at Ready. The idea came about through a prayer service that business faculty member Maria Illig led at Kairos. Each student was given their own rock, and the buried rocks at Ready were taken from the two retreats so that all seniors were represented. The rocks are now part of the Wehinger Peace Garden. Members of the Class of 2014 celebrate after starting a new tradition… 9 Beta Club Inductees: High Standards, For Academics and Service A t a ceremony held on May 6, fifteen new members were inducted into the Ready chapter of the National Beta Club, which is similar in nature to the National Honor Society and has high standards for induction, including a 3.5 grade point average as well as good character, leadership, and a commitment to service. The Club’s motto is “Let us lead by serving others.” In addition to honoring the new members, the ceremony also included the Officer Installation for the 2014-15 year, led by club moderator and math faculty member Denise Vitullo. A special thanks goes to the event sponsors, David’s Bridal, MW Tux, and Majic Hair & Nail Salon, and to all of the parents who have helped to make this annual event a success. From those who solicited donations to those who decorated the venue and to all others… whether mentioned in the program or as attendees and donors…Bishop Ready appreciates the time and effort expended in order to pull this event together successfully! he weather outside was frightful and so the Mothers’ Club Spring Prom Fashion Show had to be rescheduled. Thankfully, the delay of one week resulted in only three schedule conflicts for our models (Jennifer Hicks, Michael Osborn, and Joey Smith) and, as they say, the show did, indeed, go on…flawlessly! Fashion show coordinators were Teri Baum (mother of sophomore Zachary), Sherri Holt (mother of senior Alec), and Maria Pozz (mother of senior Steven). Emcee for the event was Rob Wahl (father of junior Rylie) and music was provided by Brian Minnehan (father of junior Brook). The models, all of whom showed incredible poise, were juniors Colby Albanese, Courtney Bair, Hailey Bryan, Taylor Foresta, Josephine Halko, Andrew Hunter, Connor Lancia, 11 Grandparents’ Day 2014 G randparents’ Day is always a special day at Ready. From breakfast, through classes, to the special liturgy, it’s a fun time when students and their grandparents can enjoy some special time together. Whether it’s a first visit to Grandparents’ Day or a fourth (or more!) visit, the grandparents seem to enjoy being with their grandchildren and seeing the changes in the classroom…even from one year to the next! All of the students, as well as the faculty and staff, enjoy having this generation at Bishop Ready. They add a certain je ne sais quoi to the school day! Senior Haylee Patel spoke about her grandparents and the role that all grandparents play in our lives. Excerpts from Ms Patel’s speech: “My grandfather Niju Patel came over to America in 1960 on a boat from India. My father was very poor growing up with eight brothers and sisters in a three bedroom house, but his parents Marlene Keyes, Kaitlyn Keyes ’14, Luz and Cris Reyes still found a way to place all eight children in Catholic school. My father’s mother grew up in poverty as well, and was raised by her grandparents. She went to a public high school and, in her senior year, the school’s principal, who was Catholic, asked my grandmother to move in with her, which she did. After my grandmother graduated, she attended a Catholic nursing college and converted to Catholicism. Because of this principal’s influence, my grandma raised her children Catholic and then, in 1994, my Dad led my Mom to the Catholic faith and now all three Patel girls are in Catholic education!” Her father’s parents died when Haylee was young, but she still holds special memories of them. Her Gram, Norma-Jean Slough, with whom Haylee believes she shares many similarities, is a generous supporter of her grandchildren and of Bishop Ready. At this year’s Mothers’ Club Prom Fashion Show, Mrs. Slough bid on purses which were part of the silent auction. Her thought, in bidding on more than one, was to help drive the Haylee Patel ’14 and Norma Slough 12 Eleanor Jackson, Jordan Bair ’14, Courtney Bair ’15, and Bernard Jackson admonished, “make sure we shower them back with a hug, with a phone call, with a prayer. We must never forget to thank God for the blessing of grandparents, who spoil us, care for us, feed us, and support us. It takes one simple minute out of our day to call or visit with our grandparents and it makes their whole day.” Haylee ended her reminiscences with: “Thank you to all of the grandparents who were able to be here with us today, and I know the ones up in heaven are looking down upon us with a smile on their faces. I hope you all love Bishop Ready, as much as Bishop Ready loves you!” Jo Ann Cantrell and Hunter Clifton ‘15 bidding up. Mrs. Slough ended up with seven out of ten purses and Haylee and her Mother were the recipients of new purses, thanks to her Gram’s generosity! Of her Gram, Haylee says, “She has taught us all how to cook and bake, except for her famous chocolate fudge. That recipe remains a mystery worldwide, except to Gram.” “I think we seem to forget what a huge impact our grandparents have in our everyday lives. In reality, without our grandparents, we would not exist and it is because of them that we do what we do and they shape us into the people we are and we are becoming. They shower us with infinite love from near, from afar, and from above. This year’s Knight at the Races III was held on Friday, May 9, at Our Lady of Victory Parish Center and Ready students were the beneficiaries of the generosity of the participants who supported the school by attending, bidding on auction items, and sponsoring horses. Oh, my!” Roxie Larger as Toto and Maggie Mills ’15 as Dorothy (Photo credit: Matt Goodman) Maggie Mills ’15 as Dorothy, Korey Kelley ’14 as Tin Woodsman, and Mark Gnatowski ’15 as the Scarecrow (Photo credit: Barb Stoll) F rom Kansas to Oz wasn’t such a long trip in Ready’s Little Theatre. For one weekend in May, if you followed the yellow brick road, you entered a magical space, complete with Munchkins, Winkie Guards, and Flying Monkeys, a scarecrow, a tin man, a cowardly lion, a wicked witch and a good witch, Dorothy and her red shoes…and Toto, too! Under the direction of Jill Larger, a cast of over 40, plus an orchestra of 10, brought Kansas and Oz to life under the lights and enchanted an audience that included the cast from the 1981 production of The Wizard of Oz! Seventeen seniors were in the cast, in their “swan song” as Ready thespians. Seniors in name roles were Trianna Connolly as Aunt Em, Korey Kelly as the Tin Woodsman, Michael Osborn as the Cowardly Lion, Payne VanTilburg as the Wizard, Ava Willford as Glinda the Good Witch, and Christopher Wiser as Uncle Henry and the Winkie General. Nine juniors were among the cast and crew, including Maggie Mills as Dorothy, Mark Gnatowski as Scarecrow, and Rylie Wahl as the Wicked Witch of the West. Sophomores Michael Creagh was the Munchkin Mayor and an Oz Guard and Molly Sullivan was the Munchkin Coroner. 32 Ava Willford ’14 as Glinda the Good Witch and Maggie Mills ’15 as Dorothy (Photo credit: Barb Stoll) Rounding out the cast were seniors Zachary Bair, Olivia DePassio, Alayna Schmitz, and Madison Whitehead; sophomores Nathan Koch, Andrés Walliser-Wejebe, and Elizabeth Wolf; and freshman Eric Willford as Winkie Guards; seniors Kaitlyn Keyes and Lauren Rivera and sophomore Elina Aceveda as Three Crows/Trees; senior Shane Lee and freshman Harrison VanTilburg as Flying Monkeys; and seniors Melanie Francis, Emily Schofield, and Maria Walliser-Wejebe; juniors Justine Ferko, Taylor Foresta, Kaitlyn Montgomery, Lee Richter, and Katherine Rondot; sophomores Gabrielle Canare, Kathleen Colvin, and Andrea Duarte; and freshman Olivia Rowe, all members of the ensemble. Munchkin Kids were played by Grace, Gabrielle, and Gwendolyn Larger (who know the director!), Breilynn Beckford, Annemarie Schofield (sister of Emily ’14), and Lia Wahl (sister of Rylie ’15). Rylie Wahl ’15 as The Wicked Witch of the West (Photo credit: Matt Goodman) “Just try and stay out of my way. Just try! I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too!” 33 “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.” Michael Osborn ’14, Mark Gnatowski ’15, Maggie Mills ’15, and Korey Kelly ’14 (Photo credit: Matt Goodman) The cast and crew (Photo credit: Barb Stoll) The sine qua non of any theatre production: stage crew and ancillary positions and, in a musical, the music director and orchestra. Junior Spencer Coleman handled both stage manager and lighting and senior Marina Sweet and sophomores Abigail Lowry and Anne Mesewicz handled stage crew duties. Special thanks go to Jeff Neff for set design, Tina Castorano for costumes, Karen and Melanie ’14 Francis for props, Julie and Amanda ’16 Poe for makeup, and Rob Wahl for the artwork that was used on the program and the Ready website. Finally, a celebratory beat of the drum for musical director Shane Trace and his terrific orchestra: Barbara Benson (oboe), David Fletcher (trombone), Mark Haller (bass), Alec Juarez (reed 2), Zach Koors (percussion), Thomas Lauer (horn), Craig Lewis (trumpet), Alec Nelson (reed), Luke Schultz (flute), and Jennifer Sper (piano). The trip to Oz and back was one that will be remembered for quite some time! 34 Joey Smith Places in Junior Elite Division of Junior Olympics J oey Smith, a member of the Class of 2015, competed during this past year, his junior year at Ready, at the 2014 Men’s Junior Olympic National Championships, Junior Elite Division, in Long Beach, California. His future plans include a place on a college gymnastics team, following graduation from Bishop Ready. 35 Students Travel to Europe Over Spring Break home.” As always, a trip abroad can be an eyeopener: how “old” everything is by comparison with home, the cultural differences, the pace of life…even in today’s global village, when peoples and cities are “closer” than they have ever been, it still can be a case of “that’s different….” And, of T his year’s spring break saw 35 Ready students and seven chaperones visit the countries of Spain and France, with stops in Madrid, half-day excursions to Toledo and Segovia in Spain, and a stay in Paris, with a side trip to Versailles, in France. For most, it was a first trip to the Continent. The grand palaces, the narrow streets, the food, and hearing languages other than English everywhere, were just some of the differences noted between home and “away from The group going to Europe… 36 course, experiencing a lost form of travel: by train between cities/countries. Travelling abroad were seniors Margaret Berkemeyer, Madeline Bowen, Maria Ciotola, Anna Collignon, Trianna Connolly, Gina DiStefano, Maria Frericks, Kaitlyn Keyes, Michael Osborn, Caroline Riewe, Lauren Rivera, Jacob Rogers, Alexandra Schroeder, Dalton Scott, Marina Sweet, Maria Walliser-Wejebe, and Jarrod Young; juniors Meg Beattie, Taylor Brewster, Elizabeth Cline, Lillian Dye, Kate Ferguson, Andrew Hunter, Lorissa LaForge, Stephanie McCool, Jonathan Mullen, Meredith Rivers, Lauren Ruth, Alanta Slone, McKenna Dining al fresco…. Along as chaperones were Heather Evans (World Languages faculty/French) and her husband, Andy; Jane Kaiser (science faculty/chemistry) and her husband, Kim; Elizabeth Miller (World Languages/Spanish), Tim Nunn (Technology Director), and April Wilburn (art faculty). Of course, they took in all of the famous sights: The Prado, Iglesias del Carmen for Mass, the Royal Palace in Madrid, the cathedral, aqueduct, and Alcazar in Segovia, and the cathedral, Santo Tomé church, and Santa Maria la Blanca Sinagogue in Toledo; the Latin Quarter, the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame, the Louvre, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris (with a side trip to Louis XIV’s Palace of Versailles). 37 Some of the participants, with the help of Tim Nunn, set up a blog that the folks back home could follow throughout the trip. The photos on the site told the story: smiling faces, photos of unfamiliar food, narrow streets, old buildings, and a sense of adventure! Lauren Ruth ’15, science teacher Jane Kaiser, and Meredith Rivers ‘15 Plaza de Toros 38 Juniors’ Improvement Plan Project Aids Columbus Zoo J uniors Courtney Bair and Rylie Wahl went “above and beyond” in their project and enlisted the help of the Ready community to help the manatees at the Columbus zoo. The young ladies explain their project and related the story of the manatees at the zoo…. “Each year at Ready, students choose a topic and complete a component of the School Improvement Plan project. For junior year, we had to create a presentation board that included information about our topic as well as steps that we could take to solve this issue. Going through with these steps,” they explained, “was not required for the assignment, but we decided to take the initiative and work towards helping our cause.’ In typical Ready fashion, these young women chose to continue and extend a project, doing more than was required but what they felt was necessary. “The topic that we chose was Managing the Florida Manatees. There are currently two female manatees at the Columbus Zoo, Stubby and Rae. Stubby is 17 years old and is a permanent resident at the zoo. She is missing a large part of her tail and has scrapes on her back because of a boating accident. Rae joined Stubby this past winter when Pixie and Wheezy, manatees who were former ‘residents’ at the zoo, were released back into the waters of Florida. Courtney Bair ’15 and Rylie Wahl ’15 in the manatee building at the Columbus Zoo. (Stubby in the background…) Rae was found alone in Key Largo and suffered from hunger and dehydration. She is being rehabilitated at the zoo with the hopes of reintroduction in the near future.” Ms Bair and Ms Wahl created their presentation board, which was displayed at the zoo in the Education Building, and then they did more. “To support the manatee conservation movement, we held a bake sale before and after school to raise money to ‘adopt’ a manatee. We made and decorated manatee cupcakes and raised over $100 in just two days through the generous support of our classmates and teachers. The money,” they explained, “was donated to the Columbus Zoo to feed and care for the manatees.” A simple project, a yearly assignment, turned into so much more—as often happens, when Ready students get involved! Rylie Wahl ’15 and Courtney Bair ’15 with their display board in the Education Building at the zoo. 39 Ready Students Join Eagle Scout Ranks T wo members of the Ready Class of 2014 completed projects and earned Eagle Scout rank during their senior year. Jack Downs, who has been involved in scouting for over 12 years, chose to work with Saint Mary Magdalene parish for his project. At Fr. Stan Benecki’s suggestion, Jack worked to create a Stations of the Cross Patio on the East side of the church. As Jack describes the project: “The finished product is a 1300 square foot, brick paved Stations of the Cross and Memorial Terrace. It is comprised of a 35-foot circle with six-foot wide approach walks on the north and south sides. In addition to 14 black granite Stations of the Cross, there are eight black granite Memorial stones inlaid radially around the water feature in the center and two 23-foot limestone benches placed radially from the center.” Jack added, “This terrace will help beautify the East side of St. Mary Eagle Scouts Jack Downs ’14 (left) and Josh Yokum ’14 (right) with principal Celene A. At Ready, he was a member of the Track and Field teams for one year and played football for two years. He has volunteered for St. Mary Magdalene and St. Aloysius churches, the West Side Free Store, the Westgate Recreation Center, and Parkview United Methodist Church. He was offered scholarships and/or grants from Michigan Technological University, the University of Cincinnati, the University of Dayton, the University of Kentucky, the University of Toledo, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Jack plans to attend OSU. At the Senior Knight Awards ceremony, Jack received the United States Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award. He was an Honor Roll Student and received an award for Exceptional Effort and Attitude in English. Josh Yokum chose to put his skills to work by creating additional space for the London H.E.L.P. house, which serves as a food pantry, soup kitchen, and free store. He made the industrial- size shelves, which were used to expand the storage at H.E.L.P. house three-fold. Josh has been involved in scouting “since I was a baby. My father was the Scout Master of Troop 104 for 19 years”—the troop to which Josh belongs. The project itself was proposed by one of the volunteers at H.E.L.P. House who was aware of the need for additional storage space. With the help of family and friends, Josh collected the necessary materials, did the prep work, and worked on the installation of the final product on site. At Ready, Josh was a charter member of both the Tech Club and the Ready chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), for which he also served as treasurer. He was also a member and treasurer of the National Beta Club, and the Ready Academic Team, and was an Honor Roll student. He received a Knight of the Round Table Award and received scholarships and/or grants from the University of Dayton and Wright State University. He plans to attend the University of Cincinnati. Akili had contemplated being a Catholic for a while and “felt that it was my time to join. I feel that I was chosen to do this. I’ve always been faithful and had a strong relationship with God through my prayer.
