executives attending the Berlin
Film Festival for the first time
in many years The Business of Film
has complied a synopsis of the history and background of Berlin together
with selected places of interest, recommended
restaurants,
and
Alternative Lifestyle clubs. Getting
around Berlin is made easier by
understanding the geography of
Berlin’s distinct areas. Berlin is a city
that never sleeps, (the Agenda for
your appointments at the back of the
Pocket Guide is on a 24hr clock) with
a population nearing 3.5 million and
an area eight times greater than Paris,
it’s Germany’s largest city. Virtually
destroyed during WWII; post-war it
was divided by the Allied Powers.
America, Britain, and France occupied West Berlin, and Russia controlled the East. The Berlin Wall
(1961-89), was grim witness to the
city’s division. In 1990 followings the
dismantling of the Wall Germany was
reunited. Its history has left Berlin
with Two city centers: On the east,
the Alexanderplatz television tower at
the city’s historical center, BerlinMitte, symbolizes ‘the capital of the
German Democratic Republic’. On
the west, the Mercedes Star atop the
Europa Center marks the busy
Kurfstendamm center. The Arkaden
shopping, entertainment, residential,
and office complex, has made chic
Potsdamer Platz the center of Berlin.
Alongside German retailers and
restaurants, international companies
include Eddie Bauer, Starbucks,
McDonalds, Benetton, Swatch, Tony
Roma’s, and Haagen Daz. Reflecting
it’s strong musical and deep cultural

roots Berlin boasts three professional
opera houses, four semi-professional
opera companies, eight symphony
orchestras, ten chamber orchestras,
hundreds of choruses, and copious
amateur bands playing punk to jazz in
the city’s 150 theaters. The annual
February Filmfestspielen is testament
to Berliners love of the cinema, the
city is home to 265 movie theaters,
the most in Germany. Berlin also offers
accessible with one admission price
access to 174 museums, including 17
state museums .Zoologischer Garten
(Zoological Gardens) is one of the
world’s largest zoos, nearly destroyed
during WWII. It now houses 14,000 animals representing 1500 species,
Olympiastadion stadium constructed for
the 1936 Olympic games, was intended to
showcase Hitler’s ‘master race’ athletes.
African-American Jesse Owens made history by winning four gold medals and
today, Berlin has a street named after him
Olympiastadion is one of the few Nazibuilt structures still intact and in use. The
memorial to victims of the Nazi regime
Gedenkstatte Plötzensee occupies the
old execution chamber in Plötzensee
prison where between 1933-45 over
2500 political prisoners were killed.
PRENZLAUER BERG
On Bernauer Strasse, separating Mitte
(East) and Wedding (West) Berlin,
one can view Berlin Wall remnants,
complete with border defenses and
‘death strip’. In the former West, the
Berlin Wall Documentation Center
has extensive displays and information about the Wall’s history. At the
Berlin Wall Memorial in the former
East, a stretch of Wall forms part of a
Kohlhoff and Kohlhoff artwork.

KANTSTRASSE SQUARE
Kantstrasse square has remained the
hub of West Berlin culture even after the
Wall came Down. The square dates
from 1862 when city planner James
Hobrecht placed plazas at regular intervals throughout the city to ensure
healthy airflow. In 1926-27, gardening
director Erwin Barth added greenery,
benches, and a playground. The square
and its beautiful perennial borders were
fully restored in 1987.
A second similar center developed
around the Hackescher Market, The
best example is the famed architecture
gallery AEDES, still standing in its
original S-Bahn archway.
SAVIGNYPASSAGE
Savignypassage Berlin’s longest shopping row is in the inner city area. The
tramway running east-west through the
city, numerous viaduct arches (there are
757 on the 12 km route) have been converted from warehouses and craft ateliers to shops, restaurants, and cafes,
making Many restaurateurs and antique

at
Nollendorfplatz station’s flea market
have moved to ritzy Bahnhof
Friedrichstrasse.
KREUZBERG
ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLES
PLACES OF INTEREST
Germany is one of the few countries in
Europe which has a very liberal open
approach to alternative lifestyles,
Kreuzberg is where free thinkers settled
before the Wall fell. An island of unconventional attitudes ironically isolated in
East Germany, pacifists came to avoid
mandatory military service; punks
squatted in abandoned houses; gays and

lesbians appreciated the repression-free
environment which is worth a visit.
Mehringdam 61 houses three gay and
lesbian venues. Melitta Sundström café
offers a cornucopia of refreshments as
well used gay books for sale (including
a large English section). The Gay
Museum and Schwuz nightclub are
located behind Sundström.
The Gay Museum has varying
Exhibitions weekly. The Englishspeaking staff is helpful, and the museum and archive are good resources for
gay cultural history and current happenings.With an archive and library
upstairs, the large English fiction collection is free to read, but can’t be
checked out. For those seeking night
time entertainment Schwuz, Berlin’s
oldest gay club, plays mainstream
music more than techno. Nightly
themes change from House to Oldies
to Latin. Early evenings the crowd is
mixed; by 2 AM, the clientele is predominantly male. On nearby
Oranienstrasse, the landmark nightclub SO36 is very lively. Nightly
themes range from Techno to
Oriental, plus the Wednesday gay and
lesbian Hungry Hearts singles party.
Bingo night’s drag queen show is
reported to be a blast.
