ABOUT ACTIVATE LEARNING
1
WELCOME TO YOUR ACTIVATE
LEARNING COLLEGE
Welcome to City of Oxford College and to discovering the
opportunities that lie ahead of you when you join an Activate
Learning college.
Activate Learning is a progressive education
group made up of schools, colleges, a training
company and commercial learning companies.
What we all have in common is a clear mission
to transform lives through learning. So if you are
ambitious for a successful future and ready to
work hard, then we would love to talk to you.
By joining an Activate Learning college you
will benefit from a unique approach to learning
that is rooted in a deep understanding of how
you learn best. We adapt to suit our learners’
individual preferences and create the right
environment to motivate them and help them
overcome traditional barriers to learning. This
means that they become confident learners
who can then take charge of their lives and
futures.
That is the transformational power of learning
which drives us and which attracts so many
people to learn with us every year.
We have strong connections to our local
business communities and we work with them
to co-create learning programmes that focus
on the skills and attributes that are in demand.
Our teams combine expertise in teaching and
learning with real industry experience. This
combination creates relevant and engaging
learning experiences which give our learners
the edge when it comes to taking the next step
into higher education or employment.
Over the last year we have developed a new
career pathways concept, which provides every
learner with a personalised route to achieving
their ambitions and learning goals. At the start
of your learning journey, we will work with you
to understand what you want to achieve and
together create a programme to get you there.
We have also been working with like-minded
colleges across the country to develop an
innovative learning company model, which
immerses learners in real-life business
environments. This approach develops the
industry-specific technical skills alongside the
softer skills that employers are looking for.
As you read this guide I hope that you will
discover more about our approach to delivering
an experience that goes ‘further than education’
and feel inspired to begin your learning journey
with us.

We’re pleased that you’re starting to plan
your route to a successful future, and we’re
delighted that you’re considering taking one of
our career pathways to help get you there.
For every learner who joins City of Oxford
College, our goal is to prepare you for your
next step, whether that’s employment, in-work
training or higher education.
Everything we do is career-focused and we’ve
made some major changes to reflect this.
We’ve redesigned the curriculum model for our
vocational programmes so that commercial
enterprise activities, client projects and
opportunities for work are integrated into the
teaching and learning experience.
We are working with an increasing number of
employers and industry partners to co-create
our curriculum. This means that we can be
sure our programmes deliver the skills that
employers want, making our learners highly

Why choose an Activate Learning college?

WHY CHOOSE AN ACTIVATE
LEARNING COLLEGE?
TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN
At Activate Learning our aim is to go ‘further than education’. That
means pushing the boundaries of traditional education to give our
students new opportunities and experiences that will equip them to
succeed.
SO, WHY CHOOSE US?
LEARNING COMPANIES
We launch real businesses – we call them
learning companies – in our colleges where
students gain professional experience, skills
and qualifications.
Learning companies demonstrate the impact
and relevance of what you learn because you
put new skills into practise straight away and
learn from the experience.
Learning companies at City of Oxford College
include:
»»
»»
»»
»»
Oxford Lifestyle Centre – a spectacular
new multi-million pound commercial facility
combining a fitness suite, hair and beauty
salons and café spaces
TeamworX – teambuilding and
communication activities for businesses
and schools
StudioX1 – a professional media production
company working with clients in the
charitable, sport, business and education
sectors
RycotewoodMADE – bespoke furniture
designed, made and sold by students
ENTERPRISE
The skills of enterprise are highly valued
in today’s global marketplace. Employers
want people who can think creatively, build
relationships through teamwork and adapt
quickly to change. Few people have a career
for life these days. More typically people
have three or four careers in a lifetime and
an increasing number create their own
employment by turning entrepreneur.
At Activate Learning we also value enterprise
and have shaped our curriculum so that it
sits at the heart of what we do. This includes
providing students with commercial, clientfocused (enterprise) activities that stretch their
skills and expose them to new situations. We
are one of the members of the Gazelle Colleges
Group, a network of colleges which promote
and develop enterprising and entrepreneurial
mindsets and behaviours in their students.
CAREER PATHWAYS
Don’t just join a course, join a career pathway –
your career pathway. We want to provide every
student with a clear line of sight to employment.
That means understanding what you want to
achieve and setting out a plan to get there. We
develop pathways tailored around your learning
goals and career aspirations and we create
them in partnership with you so that you feel
empowered to achieve them.
EMPLOYABILITY BUILT-IN
We work with employers to make sure that
our learning programmes meet their needs.
This helps to reduce the skills gap between
education and employment and means that our
students are in demand. During your studies
you will take part in work experience, hear from
visiting speakers and work on live projects set
by employers that reflect issues found in the
real world. Our partnerships with employers
mean that you start to build important contacts
before you finish your studies – and it means
some of our students are offered their first step
on the career ladder as soon as they complete
their qualification.
Our students are ‘born digital’ and we want
them to take leading-edge digital skills into
the workplace. That’s why we have invested in
learning zones fully-equipped with digital and
mobile technology like ipads and internet TV.
It’s also why we embed digital technologies
like Google Apps and social media into the
way that we deliver our learning. Our approach
has been recognised by Ofsted and is seen as
good practice by leading national bodies such
as City and Guilds.
INDUSTRY STANDARD FACILITIES
Don’t just learn the theory – get hands on and
develop your practical skills in our industry
standard workshops and facilities. Whether it’s
fashion, catering, sport and fitness, hair, beauty,
engineering or childcare, we have got oncampus facilities that mirror those found in the
workplace. We are investing in new facilities all
the time, to make sure we keep pace with the
changing requirements of industry.
THE WHOLE JOURNEY
By joining an Activate Learning college, you
are not just joining one organisation but a
powerful network of schools, colleges and
training providers. We work in partnership
with leading local universities to offer higher
education courses, meaning you can
progress from school leaver to undergraduate
within the same learning environment. Our
relationship with Activate Enterprise, the largest
apprenticeship provider in the Thames Valley,
provides students with excellent routes into
apprenticeship training and employment. And
with organisations specialising in key growth
areas – such as science, engineering and the
creative industries – you can find the expertise
you need within the group.

OUR APPROACH TO YOUR LEARNING
There are no limits to your learning. Every one of us can learn
something new – as long we feel motivated and have the right
environment and support.
Our learning philosophy believes in the limitless
capacity of the brain. It’s just like any other
muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it
gets.
However, few of us will make the effort to
learn something if we don’t see the point.
Motivation is essential, which is why our
learning experiences focus on putting theory
into practice.
Practicing a new skill in a realistic business
or industry setting immediately helps you to
understand its impact and relevance. And it
means you can tweak your approach the next
time you do it, based on what did or didn’t
work.
Motivation aside, our emotions are the biggest
factor in enabling or preventing us from
learning. If we have had negative experiences
of education, we can immediately put up
barriers when faced with what seems like a
similar situation. It can end up feeling like we
can’t learn, when in reality our emotions just
won’t let us.
Our teaching teams understand how the
brain and emotions work together so that
our experience and understanding can help
everyone to fulfil their potential.
Find out more by visiting us and speaking to
our existing students at one of our open events.

OUR CAMPUSES
City of Oxford College has two campuses – one in the city centre, and one
in Blackbird Leys. Each campus has industry standard facilities, industryexperienced teachers and digitally-equipped learning zones.
CITY CENTRE CAMPUS
Located in the very centre of Oxford, this campus
offers training for a vast range of career pathways
and options.
TOTAL TRANSFORMATION
Our Blackbird Leys campus is undergoing a major transformation, as we invest £8m to create a centre of
excellence for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and an option to join construction from Year 9
from September 2015
The project will create new buildings and refurbish existing facilities to provide an innovative centre complete with
learning zones, engineering workshops and modern design and fabrication spaces. The investment responds to
calls from employers to train more people in science and engineering to meet local skills needs.
What do you want to do? Who do you want to be?
We’ll get you there. Choose pathways which could

When retail assistant Miranda Labaurn decided
in her mid-twenties that she needed a change
of direction, a career in beauty therapy
appealed. After just two years Miranda is now
a full-time beauty therapist at the brand new
Oxford Lifestyle Centre.
The 23-year-old, who completed the Extended
Diploma in Fashion at City of Oxford College
before gaining a first class honours in fashion
and costume at Birmingham City University,
now runs her own clothing line.
Miranda completed a Level 3 apprenticeship
with Activate Enterprise and City of Oxford
College, developing skills in facial, electrical
and massage therapies, before taking the
opportunity to join the team at the new centre.
Among her career highlights to-date has been
providing a dress for Helena to wear for a
spread in Vanity Fair, shot by leading fashion
photographer Mario Testino.

Apprenticeships offer a direct route into
employment, with the advantage of developing
essential skills and qualifications as you earn.
If you are serious about making a start on your
career and getting industry-specific skills and
qualifications, this is the route for you,
Our apprenticeships are run by Activate
Enterprise, a specialist apprenticeship provider
that partners with colleges to deliver nationallyrecognised learning programmes.
As with any other career path there is clear
progression from intermediate (Level 2) and
advanced (Level 3) apprenticeships to higher
apprenticeships, which are degree-level
equivalent qualifications.
Apprentices are employed and paid by their
company and spend one or two days a week
at the college learning extra skills, including
English, maths and IT. Some apprenticeships
are delivered entirely in the workplace.

HOW TO APPLY
Information, advice and guidance

offer impartial advice and guidance. Please call
and ask to speak to a member of our team.
Online
You can apply online at www.cityofoxford.ac.uk

Your interview
We interview all of our full-time applicants, as
we want to get to know you and about your
chosen career pathway. It also gives you the
chance to ask any further questions and make
sure it is the right pathway for you.
Extract from a Learner Journey
The interviewer wanted to know what I enjoyed
and took me through the personality inventory
I had been sent and had completed earlier.
During the interview I really felt listened to and,
by the end of it, I was clear about my career
path.
There was no pre-determined programme, but
a series of steps which I could take to obtain a
Level 3 qualification. The course was designed
around me.
Employers were involved in setting our
assessments and we were increasingly learning
theory at home and applying the knowledge in
the classroom – flip learning. Enterprise weeks
were completed with a variety of curriculum
areas, not just my own, to improve multidisciplinary team working.
Look good and feel great at the Oxford Lifestyle Centre – our brand
new multi-million pound addition to the city centre campus!
It’s open to the public, it’s open to staff and students at
the college, and it offers first-class services in styling,
fitness, food and drink.
WHY HAVE WE BUILT THE OXFORD
LIFESTYLE CENTRE?
We’ve made this huge investment for one reason only:
HAIR AND BEAUTY
Our sleek new salons look great – and so do the
people who use them, thanks to the hair, make-up
and massage treatments provided by our stylists and
therapists.
HEALTH AND FITNESS
During the summer break I continued to work for
my learning company and helped the college
to recruit new students. I never anticipated that I
would develop so much self-belief.
Want to get in shape? Do it in style with our all-new
fitness centre, equipped with the very latest in gym
technology. Membership discount for students!
I’m still following my learning journey … who
knows where it will ultimately lead. What I do
know is that there is no limit to what I can
achieve, provided I make the effort.
NUTRITION AND REFRESHMENT
Relax, refuel and refresh with snacks and drinks at
The Café, next to the fitness centre.
to provide our students with professional
training, and first-hand experience in a
commercial environment.
Students who enrol on hair, beauty and sports
programmes will train and work in the lifestyle centre,
gaining invaluable professional experience which
improves career prospects.

A CAREER IN FURNITURE
YOUR PATHWAY – YOUR FUTURE
If you want to design or make or do both, follow a
pathway into furniture.
Simon Pengelly, designer of the Radius range for
Habitat, is a former Rycotewood student.
The UK furniture industry employs more than 70,000
people and contributes more than £7 billion to GDP.
Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire are regarded as
the heart and soul of this country’s furniture industry.
Companies range from larger-scale manufacturers such
as Ercol and Hands of Wycombe, through to smaller
bespoke designer-makers.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
You learn by doing practical activities, skill-based
projects and watching tutor demonstrations on campus
in our Rycotewood Furniture Centre workshops.
The course includes lectures on timber technology
designing and health and safety too. This is a very
highly-regarded training centre for furniture making. It
works in partnership with Bucks New University to form
the National School of Furniture.
Apprenticeships are an alternative to full-time study,
and we offer these too.

programme is for you.
WHY STUDY HERE?
This college is one of the few places where you can do

As you’d expect from a further education college,
this is an adult learning environment. You will be well
supported by your tutor who will communicate with your
parents to make sure you achieve the highest possible
grades.
We can talk about your hopes and ambitions, and our
teachers will convert your potential into good grades.
