Page 30-31 YWCA Peterborough, Victoria & Haliburton exists to support the right of all women and their families to live free from violence, poverty and oppression. -3- A message from Lynn Zimmer, YWCA Peterborough, Victoria & Haliburton Executive Director, and Christine Vogel, Board President 2011-2012 was a year of completion and planning for the future! We celebrated YWCA Peterborough, Victoria & Haliburton’s 120th anniversary, our 25th year in Haliburton County, and the 20th anniversary of our Centennial Crescent Housing Community in Peterborough! This was our first year of service delivery in our new Crossroads Shelter in Peterborough, and the year we expanded HERS in Haliburton County to shelter two families at once. Both services provide a safe, comforting, and healing space where women and children can escape abuse and harassment, focus on re-building their strength, get help from our counsellors and many other local agencies, and take the first steps toward their new life. We were pleased with the level of board and staff participation at the YWCA AMM in Yellowknife -- important connections were made regarding issues facing women and children in our Northern rural communities and those we are confronting here at home. We also initiated a new Court Support Project in Peterborough to help women as they navigate Family and Criminal Court. At the same time, we launched a collaborative research project to identify how the justice system and agency partners can improve our services to women abuse survivors and remove barriers they struggle with. Court support strengthens our Crossroads Shelter and our Outreach and Transition Counselling programs, and enables the YWCA to connect with more women who need our help. -4- Throughout 2011-2012, we worked with many partners toward developing a Community Food Centre in Peterborough and in the townships of Peterborough County. We also reached out to community members to help us expand the impact of the JustFood program by sustaining the subsidy that makes fresh, nutritious food affordable to low income families through this high impact self-help program. We conducted an extensive planning consultation with our donors, our clients and participants, our staff and volunteers and other agencies and services in the community. Our board participated in two dynamic participatory retreats focused on strategic directions both in governance and planning. Our final plan will take shape in 2012, focused on the wellbeing of women and children, helping them do more than survive or cope – helping them to thrive. -5- Staff Organizational Chart Board of Directors 2011-2012 Executive Christine Vogel, President Jennifer Cureton, Vice President Sheila Hamilton, Vice President Heather Stelzer, Vice President Gabriele Zeh-Abramsky, Treasurer Mandy Hamu, Secretary Sandy Lawrence, Past President Directors Annie Gelfand Trish Graham Jennifer Harrington Olivia James Eileen Madder Lauren McGee Maryam Monsef Kathy Rochon Suzi Wills Total: 81 Staff (55.45 FTE) 12 Management: (11.76 FTE) 11 Administrative: (8.33 FTE) 58 Union: (35.35 FTE) Board of Directors 1 Executive Director 1 Director of Finance Management Team 2011-2012 Directors Executive Director, Lynn Zimmer Director of Finance, Ron Batt Director of Resource Development, Lyn Giles Director of Shelter & Outreach, Barbara McEwen Supervisors Community Development Coordinator & Compass Training Supervisor, Joëlle Favreau Court Support Project Manager, Karine Rogers Crossroads Shelter Supervisor, Kathryn Waugh Executive Assistant, Kerri Boyd Housing Manager, Catharine Lamoureux Outreach Services Coordinator, Darlene Smith-Harrison Property Manager, Carol Oldfield Y’s Buys Manager, Valerie West -6- Membership 1 Executive Assistant 1 Director of Shelter & Outreach 1 Director of Resource Development 2 Administrative Assistants/ Receptionists 1 Outreach Services Coordinator 1 Y’s Buys Manager 1 Payroll & Network Administrator 1 Housing Manager 1 Crossroads Shelter Supervisor 1 Community Development Coordinator 1 Court Support Project Manager 1 Finance/Payroll Assistant 1 Maintenance 12 Crossroads Shelter Counsellors 1 Community Development Intern 2 Court Support Workers 1 Property Manager 1 Family Support Counsellor 1 Community Development Worker 1 Clinical Therapist (Hal) 1 Resource Development Coordinator (Hal) 1 Housekeeper 8-10 Relief Shelter Counsellors 1 Food Action Worker 6-8 Crisis Intervention Workers (Hal) 1 Special Events Coordinator 3 Wellbeing Counsellors 1-3 JustFood Relief Staff 1 Office Assistant (Hal) 1 Volunteer Coordinator 1 Housekeeper 1 Pre-Employment Training Manager 1 2 Youth Health Communications & Fitness Coordinator Program Leaders 3 Outreach & Transition Counsellors (Ptbo) 3 Outreach & Transition Counsellors (Hal) -7- 1 Campaign Associate 1 Y’s Buys Assistant Manager 2 Y’s Buys Clerks 3 Y’s Buys Relief Staff YWCA GirlSpace received funding through the Lloyd Carr-Harris Foundation and the Province of Ontario. YWCA GirlSpace is a national YWCA initiative that encourages the empowerment and leadership of grade 7 and 8 girls to shape their own curriculum, focusing on social and emotional wellbeing, fitness, nutrition, and healthy relationships. In 2011-2012, more than 70 girls participated in weekly programs offered at Prince of Wales, Kenner Collegiate and Centennial Crescent (located in Peterborough), Archie Stouffer Elementary School (located in Minden), and JD Hodgson Elementary School (located in Haliburton). Girls shared with our staff that the program felt safe and welcoming and that what they enjoyed most was making new friends and having input into the activities and discussion topics. -8- Each year during the third week of October, YWCAs from more than 90 countries around the world work in partnership to host a week-long series of activities designed to raise awareness, promote attitude change, and enable individuals and organizations to begin positive actions towards ending violence in their communities. This year, the Peterborough City and County Week Without Violence™ Steering Committee coordinated a variety of community events, including a presentation on ‘Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault’ at The Junction for Night Club Staff and Cab Drivers; a workshop for parents, entitled ‘Fighting and Aggression: Help your child get along with others’; and the second annual Week Without Violence™ PEACE EXPO held at Lansdowne Place. The Week Without Violence PEACE EXPO, a free all-day event, offered members of the community an introduction to local programs and services that promote healthy, peaceful relationships, while presenting creative ways of incorporating peace-building in everyday situations. The 2011 Power of Being A Girl conference was held at Kenner Collegiate in the City of Peterborough and focused on Healthy Social Networking. This year, a team of 5 grade 7 and 8 girls planned and guided this half-day violence prevention event with support from YWCA staff. This year’s conference reached an audience of more than 135 girls. -9- Accessibility and Inclusion In 2011-2012 the YWCA’s Anti-Oppression/Anti-Racism Committee, composed of YWCA staff and volunteers, focused its energy on accessibility of our services. The group initiated the redesign of our website, provided Accessibility Standards training for our staff teams and volunteers, and continues to review our policies and procedures in order to ensure that the YWCA is equipped to fully support the needs of women with disabilities. In spring of 2012, the YWCA worked with Community Living Peterborough to develop a series of workshops on “good relationships” for young women with intellectual disabilities. This series will be offered at the beginning of the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Women’s Life Skills The YWCA’s Women’s Life Skills Workshop Series was offered from April to June of 2011 and provided 22 women with valuable peer support in an informal learning environment. Eight weekly workshop sessions included discussion and opportunities for learning on topics related to self-care, boundaries, coping skills and coping with change, effective communication skills, goal setting and self respect, conflict transformation, handling criticism and healthy relationships. - 10 - Compass training Centre Compass Training Centre builds on the YWCA’s deep understanding of how to facilitate learning and change, and provides high quality training and facilitation services to assist other organizations and businesses striving for change. In 2011-2012, Compass Training Centre delivered 18 workshops, attended by 271 participants. The focus of the workshops ranged from housing, violence against women, and conflict transformation, to rethinking disability. - 11 - Counselling and Support Groups Outreach counselling at the YWCA helps women plan for their safety, talk about abuse with someone who understands, and gain practical assistance and support to reach a safe place. In 2011-2012, YWCA Outreach Staff in Peterborough and Haliburton County provided one-to-one counselling and support to 625 women and 81 children. The YWCA offered a total of 15 Support Groups in Haliburton County, which were attended by 153 women and continued to support the work of the Peterborough Domestic Abuse Network Survivor’s Group in Peterborough by providing meeting space and a YWCA staff member to act as liaison and provide support as needed. Crisis and Support Calls The majority of our clients have their first connection with the YWCA by telephone. Women can reach us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling our toll-free crisis line: 1-800-461-7656. When women call the crisis line, they can be assured that their call is anonymous and completely confidential. Our number will not appear on their telephone bill or on their call display and we will not know where they are calling from unless they choose to tell us. In 2011-2012, YWCA Peterborough, Victoria & Haliburton’s Outreach and Crossroads Counsellors provided support through 3,492 crisis and support calls. YWCA staff also implemented ‘Women In Shelters & Housing’ (WISH) software in 2011-2012 to manage program data. - 12 - - 13 - Crossroads Shelter Haliburton Emergency Rural SafeSpace (HERS) To women and children escaping violence and abuse in Peterborough City and County, Crossroads Shelter offers more than physical security; our staff foster hope for the future through a variety of supports designed to help women and their families navigate the difficult process of starting over. Crossroads Shelter counsellors are available 24 hours a day to provide safety planning, counselling, referral and advocacy, and assistance with creating action plans toward goal achievement - all within the security of the shelter walls. Shelter staff provide groups and one-on-one assistance to women and families in areas of Nutritional Wellbeing, Women’s Wellbeing, Family Wellbeing and Family Support. Groups offered in 20112012 included topics such as Parenting, Communal Living, Personal Wellbeing, Healthy Relationships, and Arts and Crafts Activities for the whole family. In 2011-2012, 187 women and 56 children received shelter and support at Crossroads. Our shelter staff successfully implemented the new ‘WISH’ service data software and devised new procedures to aid in the transition to their new workspace. February 14th marked Crossroads Shelter’s first anniversary at our new location. YWCA volunteers also organized a Crossroads Shelter Donations Room where women leaving the shelter to begin their new life can find a wide selection of new items generously donated to Crossroads Shelter. At Crossroads, we aim to provide a safe and nurturing environment so that women and their families may envision all possibilities and realize their best hopes. - 14 - HERS is YWCA Peterborough, Victoria & Haliburton’s innovative approach to offering shelter services in a rural setting. By operating on an as-needed basis, HERS helps rural women overcome barriers such as isolation, distance and lack of transportation which can dramatically affect their ability to leave an abusive situation. Women and children who turn to HERS for support receive private crisis accommodation and counselling, free of charge. Often, the opportunity to stay in the SafeSpace is enough to give women the time and space to decide where they want to go next and to be able to process their thoughts about the relationship they have been in. With funding from the Ministry of Community and Social Services, HERS received extensive renovations in 2011-2012 including a newly shingled roof and alterations to the large interior space. What was once our single family unit now includes two units designed to accommodate two families simultaneously, one of which is fully-accessible. Three women and 3 children were provided accommodation at HERS in 2011-2012. YWCA also proudly celebrated 25 years in Haliburton County in 2011 and would like to extend a warm “thank you” to everyone who joined in the festivities at McKecks in Haliburton on November 18th. - 15 - Centennial Crescent Court Support Project Centennial Crescent provides rent-geared-to-income housing for women and children who have left violence in a relationship. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we are continually inspired by the women and children past and present who have made Centennial Crescent their home. More and more of our residents have made education a priority in their lives by entering college and/or university or attaining their Secondary school diploma. 2011/2012 saw residents (including children) either entering or graduating from Fleming College or Trent University in a variety of programs and degrees, including Registered Nursing, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Law, International Studies, Paralegal, Law Clerk, Police Foundations, Business Administration, Photography, Computer Programme Analyst, Personal Support Worker, Disability Support Worker, Registered Practical Nursing. We thank City of Peterborough, Housing - Renewable Energy Initiative for funds for our solar generating system and Ministry of Community and Social Services for funds to increase the insulation in our attics. Also, thank you to Recreation and Social Services students from Fleming College for the amazing holiday events; Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Sergeant Blewett and Constable Karen O’Brien for providing guidance to our community and Constables Kim, Landriault and Kenny for the youth BBQ; and Trinity College student volunteers and instructors. YWCA Peterborough, Victoria & Haliburton launched the Court Support Program in November of 2011 in response to an idenified need for additional supports for female survivors of abuse who are going through the Family Court process in Peterborough. This 2 year initiative is being funded by Status of Women Canada and the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General until March of 2013. In 2011-2012, Court Support Workers offered information, safety planning and emotional support to 46 women in abusive situations who were going through family court. The feedback received to date has confirmed that this support has significantly improved women’s experience of the family court process. The YWCA’s Court Support Project Manager has been working collaboratively with the YWCA and other interested agencies in planning for the development of a service delivery hub to provide access to multiple domestic abuse services all under one roof, making these services easier and safer for women to access. The Court Support Project also received valuable support from Trent student Rachelia Giardino who completed a communitybased research project through the Trent Centre for Community-Based Education. Rachelia’s literature review examined barriers to the legal system for women in domestic abuse situations, supporting her research paper which reviewed challenges and best practices for collaboration in domestic violence service delivery hub settings. - 16 - - 17 - Hazel Fund Guardian Angel Awards Since 1998, the YWCA Hazel Fund has provided financial assistance to women who have experienced violence and abuse, and are working toward furthering their formal or informal education. Each year, the Hazel Fund Committee receives applications from incredible women from Peterborough, City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County who have already taken courageous steps toward a brighter future; women like Kyla (bottom left) who received one of two awards granted in May of 2011. In recognition of the December 6th National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, YWCA Peterborough, Victoria & Haliburton honours local women who have had a positive influence in their community and are dedicated to women’s issues throughout Haliburton County. In 2011, the YWCA recognized Marilynne Lesperance (left), Carla Watson (centre) and Jane van Nood (right) for their outstanding efforts. Thank you to the Highlands Male Chorus, OutLoud Womyn’s Voices, Canadian Federation of University Women, Sir Sandford Fleming College - Haliburton Campus, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 636 Minden, Foodland Haliburton, Dollo’s Foodland, TeddyTime, CFUW Haliburton Highlands and the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their continued support of this heart-warming annual community event. In 2011-2012, the YWCA Hazel Fund distributed four $1,000 Education Awards made possible as a result of the continued support of several generous donors. We are truly grateful to be able to continue to offer this type of support to assist survivors of violence in achieving their dreams. Many thanks to all those who have given in an effort to help keep Hazel’s legacy alive. - 18 - - 19 - Community Gardens YWCA Peterborough, Victoria & Haliburton supports 4 gardens in the city of Peterborough and one in Peterborough County and has been actively involved in the Peterborough Community Garden Network, working towards creating vibrant and resilient community gardens that are open to anyone interested in growing their own vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers. In September of 2011, the YWCA welcomed support from Home Depot Foundation and RONA to complete the construction of a fence surrounding its Armour Road garden. With supplies in hand, a team of 6 volunteers were able to complete the 220 foot enclosure in less than 2 days with hands on support from RONA handyman Ron Brooks. Gardeners can now begin preparing their 2012 plots knowing that their produce will be well-protected from local critters who share the space. Kawartha Community Food Hub For the past two years, the YWCA has be a member of the Kawartha Community Food Hub. In October of 2010, the group of partners involved in the project nominated the YWCA to be the lead in applying for funding designed to support the development of the Hub. The YWCA has since received funding from the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough as well as Carrot Cache to create the architectural concepts for the urban site of the Hub, and also received a two-year grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to grow our partnerships in the County, develop a governance model and promote the work of the Hub throughout the region. - 20 - The YWCA’s JustFood Program is an innovative self-help initiative that strives to meet our community’s need for nutritious, affordable food all year round. By partnering with local farmers, grocers and wholesalers to purchase food in bulk and in season, the YWCA can offer high-quality produce and staples items at prices the average family can’t find in stores. The YWCA also offers a subsidy price option for those who could use a little more help making ends meet. By reducing the cost of the JustFood boxes by one half, this option helps to ensure that everyone can afford to purchase wholesome and nutritious ingredients, month after month. In 2011-2012, the YWCA distributed 5,434 JustFood boxes (2,136 rural and 3,298 urban), resulting in the ability of 9,306 adults (4,036 rural and 5,270 urban) and 4,604 children (2,429 rural and 2,175 urban) to afford to purchase fresh, locally-grown food. The YWCA continues to explore ways to create more drop-off sites in the City and County and continue providing the subsidy option to those who need it. - 21 - Holiday Gift Program Y’s Archie Gently Used Boutique With help from local businesses and generous members of our community, YWCA ‘elves’ worked diligently throughout November and December of 2011 to coordinate and assemble gift packages containing new toys, clothing, household items and grocery gift cards for women and children who have received support through the YWCA. YWCA Women’s Centre of Haliburton County continued its partnership with Archie Stouffer Elementary School in 2011-2012 to offer volunteer staffing at Y’s Archie Gently Used Boutique. The partnership which first arose from the YWCA’s ability to staff the school’s store with volunteers has since ensured that hundreds of local residents have access to quality clothing at a prices they can afford to pay. Proceeds from store sales are shared between the YWCA and the Archie Stouffer Elementary school. While small, these gestures of kindness go a long way toward ensuring that women and their children have the opportunity to share in the tradition of the holiday season and can mean a great deal to families who have left many of their belongings and traditions behind to build a more peaceful life. Due to the overwhelming generosity displayed by members of our local community in 2011, 89 women and 133 children received gifts, groceries and a very special reminder that they are not alone. Y’s Archie is located inside the school (12 Vintage Crescent, Minden) and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. - 22 - For nearly four decades, Y’s Buys sold gently-used clothing, household items, shoes and accessories at affordable prices to shoppers in Peterborough’s downtown core. Donations to Y’s Buys provided both financial support for YWCA programs and also ensured that YWCA shelter and counselling clients had ongoing access to a wide selection of clothing that could be purchased as needed using gift certificates. Sadly, in Spring of 2012, the YWCA announced that Y’s Buys would be closing due to steadily decreasing sales revenues. YWCA Peterborough, Victoria & Haliburton is extremely proud of the success that Y’s Buys achieved since 1973 and would like to thank all of the dedicated Y’s Buys staff, volunteers and supporters who have become part of the YWCA family over the years! - 23 - Volunteer Program No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the burden of another. Thank you. ~Author Unknown Our volunteers generously offer their unique perspectives, creativity, skills and energy in support of the YWCA. We are very grateful to our incredible team of 356 dedicated women, men and youth for their shared contribution of more than 9,800 hours in 2011-2012. Your efforts have helped make Peterborough and Haliburton Counties more vibrant and peaceful communities for all to enjoy! This past year, the donations we received from individuals, corporations, government, events, foundations, and grants provided diversified funding and ensured we could reliably deliver our core programs. Each year, donors to YWCA assist people whose lives are touched by violence, abuse, poverty and oppression and we appreciate this in a way that cannot be adequately described in words. Although fundraising will always be a necessary part of the work we do to meet the needs of our community, the continued support of our donors means we can ensure that our programs will continue for generations to come. YWCA is incredibly fortunate that the residents of Peterborough City and County continue to value and support our efforts to help women and children move beyond survival and coping to healing and thriving.
