RESPOND. SUPPORT. PREVENT.
Stop! Enough. No more...
These words capture the sentiments of a coalition of
national organizations set to launch a campaign to halt
domestic violence and sexual assault in America. The
initiative will use all forms of media to push the issue of
domestic violence to the forefront of our country’s
conversation. Among its goals is to stop the stigma, shame
and silence that domestic violence victims often encounter.
Alternatives Inc. has a long history of working to eradicate
abuse, and we’ve never been alone in our efforts. As we
prepare to welcome this powerful new campaign, we thank
our local supporters who, in spite of a sluggish economy,
continue to find innovative ways to help us. In 2012 they
tapped their unique resources to assist us in meeting our
needs and serving our clients. As examples:
• Soma Intimates, an upscale boutique for women’s
apparel, invited customers to purchase bras for our
residents who often arrive at the shelter with no change
of clothing. The goal was 500 items; the result was more
than double that number.
• Sally Beauty Supply awarded us a $1,000 grant to
purchase hair care products and cosmetics to boost
clients’ self esteem as they rebuild their lives.
• Community and Saint John’s hospitals donated the scrubs
that clients enrolled in the certified nurse assistant
program must wear during their clinical training.
• Every Wednesday Prairie Farms delivered to our door a week’s
supply of milk and orange juice at no cost to the shelter.
• Quality Printing in Anderson filmed a video about our
agency, entered it in a statewide competition and won
$5,000 for us.
• Employees from Kleenco repaired our parking lot; Nestle
workers conducted a toy drive at Christmas; Hoosier Park
named us among the beneficiaries of its celebrity drivers
program; a grant from PNC Foundation enabled us to
purchase educational
materials for Robbie’s
Room, our preschool
program...and the list goes
on and on.
The outpouring of
support we feel from new
and old friends continues
to strengthen our belief in
the communities we serve
and the cause we share.

MADISON COUNTY
Two well-publicized deaths in Madison County, both related to domestic violence,
boosted awareness of abuse and contributed to a spike in the number of clients
seeking help from Alternatives. New and established partnerships have resulted in
companies and law enforcement agencies raising funds and hosting special events.
Projects have ranged from a block party in Elwood to a food drive in Anderson
to an all-day observance in Lapel. Several partners conducted in-house supply
drives with employees donating food, toys and clothing. All efforts helped defray
our escalating expenses.
Right: As part of monies received from Payless ShoeSource, Alternatives Inc. was able to
provide much-needed new shoes to children staying in the shelter.

HANCOCK COUNTY
Our full time victim’s advocate, based at
the Greenfield Police Department, has
successfully taught our dating-violence
curriculum in every school corporation in Hancock County. This year she
extended the “Safe Dates” program to
include the parents of seventh graders in
Greenfield. She also assisted students
at New Palestine High School in hosting
Debbie Norris, whose daughter was
murdered by an abusive boyfriend.
TIPTON COUNTY
Since adding Tipton County to our service
area two years ago we have been raising awareness about domestic violence and about the
services that we make available to victims. We
have a part-time advocate housed at the police
department, and we continue to offer training
to local law enforcement officers. These efforts
are having an impact. We have experienced an
increase in the number of families we serve.
A domestic abuse awareness candlelight vigil took place
in Tipton this past year.

HAMILTON COUNTY
Elected officials in Hamilton County are
researching the possibility of establishing a domestic violence shelter within
their jurisdiction and have approached
Alternatives about operating such a
facility. A study by IUPUI students has
documented the services presently available to victims in Hamilton County, and
our board has formed a subcommittee
to consider the feasibility of stepping up
assistance to those victims. We currently
have an advocate working part-time in
partnership with Trinity Free Clinic,
an outreach of Our Lady of Mount
Carmel Church. For several years
Hamilton County has ranked second,
behind Madison County, in the number
of victims that our agency serves.

New Palestine High School students embraced the “No More”
message through chalk drawings outside their high school.
Domestic violence victims in Henry County are served by
Safe at Home, a nonresidential program formed more than
10 years ago with our help. Depending on their location,
families needing shelter have the option of coming to
Alternatives or to a shelter in Delaware County.

MARION COUNTY
Alternatives Inc. serves as a resource
to domestic violence victims in Marion
County. We offer shelter services when
Marion County facilities are operating
at capacity.
awareness
prevention
HANCOCK COUNTY
Our full time victim’s advocate, based at
the Greenfield Police Department, has
successfully taught our dating-violence
curriculum in every school corporation in Hancock County. This year she
extended the “Safe Dates” program to
include the parents of seventh graders in
Greenfield. She also assisted students
at New Palestine High School in hosting
Debbie Norris, whose daughter was
murdered by an abusive boyfriend.
TIPTON COUNTY
Since adding Tipton County to our service
area two years ago we have been raising awareness about domestic violence and about the
services that we make available to victims. We
have a part-time advocate housed at the police
department, and we continue to offer training
to local law enforcement officers. These efforts
are having an impact. We have experienced an
increase in the number of families we serve.
A domestic abuse awareness candlelight vigil took place
in Tipton this past year.

were treated to a day at Conner

Board Members.
HAMILTON COUNTY
Elected officials in Hamilton County are
researching the possibility of establishing a domestic violence shelter within
their jurisdiction and have approached
Alternatives about operating such a
facility. A study by IUPUI students has
documented the services presently available to victims in Hamilton County, and
our board has formed a subcommittee
to consider the feasibility of stepping up
assistance to those victims. We currently
have an advocate working part-time in
partnership with Trinity Free Clinic,
an outreach of Our Lady of Mount
Carmel Church. For several years
Hamilton County has ranked second,
behind Madison County, in the number
of victims that our agency serves.
support
HENRY COUNTY
Students from New Palestine High School got involved
in building awareness for domestic abuse.
