The Maryland Jockey Club has graciously donated A Day at the Races certificate to the Delaware Equine Council
Foundation to be auctioned off during its
fundraiser for the scholarship program for
the past several years. This year DEC
members, Dusty Chaps Farm and Second
Chance Ranch of Delaware, Inc., partnered
up to purchase the certificate and enjoyed
a Day At The Races. The group chose
Pimlico as the track of preference and attended the races on the last day of the
meet, June 26.
The Day at the Races began with an excited group traveling to Pimlico, the home
of the Preakness Stakes, in Baltimore,
Maryland. Along the way, it was discovered that the majority of the group had
never attended a live horse race. Excitement was in the air!
Upon arrival, valet parking was convenient and complimentary with the certificate.
Eric Weber from group sales greeted the
group with a friendly smile, handed out programs, and escorted the group to its reserved seating in the clubhouse. As part of
the package, the certificate holder could
name a race and have it printed in the program. Race #4 was named “Gus the Wonder Pony Memorial” after a beloved lesson
pony recently lost by Dusty Chaps Farm.
After a scrumptious brunch buffet (not
part of the certificate purchase), Gus the
Wonder Pony group, was escorted to a
viewing area of the paddock to watch the
horses prepare for race #4. A few folks, including the Gus The Wonder Pony’s owners, bet on horse #4 (Hideaway) to win,
place, or show. After the horses left the
paddock, the group was led out to the winner’s circle to watch the race. Dressed in a
red hood and horse boots that looked like
athletic socks from the 1970’s, Hideaway
crossed the finish line well ahead of the
pack!
Hideaway and was led into the winner’s
circle for his win photo with his trainer, owners, and entourage. Once he was led out,
the Gus The Wonder Pony group stepped

jockey, Jorge M. Perez, for a professional photo which was provided as part of the certificate. Mr. Perez was gracious enough to stay and sign autographs
as requested by members of the group.
A stroll back through the paddock area was fun as the group was permitted to meet and greet one of the outrider
horses that was taking a break. The horse enjoyed many pets and went so far as to rub his eye on one of his guests
backs.
Overall, the group’s visit was outstanding and everyone had a great time. For those who had never attended a race
prior to the event, it certainly was a treat. Thank you very much to The Maryland Jockey Club, Pimlico Race Course, and
Eric Weber for such a wonderful Day at the Races!

Event raises $20,000 for
Southern Delaware
Therapeutic Riding
By Maddy Lauria
Reprinted courtesy of the Cape Gazette
(August 1, 2016)
Southern Delaware Therapeutic Riding in Milton recently received a $20,000 donation that will help fund
the facility's capital campaign.
The proceeds were raised during a March 9 event
hosted by Key Advisors Group LLC at Touch of Italy,
and will help fund the facility's new center on Route 5,
the addition of a closed-in, handicap-accessible viewing and staging area, new horse stalls, a new entry
and other enhancements to the building.
At Southern Delaware Therapeutic Riding, horses
and certified instructors work with about 60 riders to
help make life a little easier for clients living with
autism, depression, learning disabilities and other
physical or emotional challenges. The facility also
hosts separate camps and group activities revolving
around equine therapy and activities.
A capital campaign continues following the purchase of the nearly 10-acre property just outside of
Milton in March. Donations and volunteers are always
welcome.

Bill (HB-289) was signed by Governor Markell on July
20. The Fish and Wildlife Commission is meeting on August 30 at the Robbins & Richardson Building to discuss
where Sunday hunting will be allowed. The fees and conservation passes go into effect July 1, 2017.

Cases of Potomac Horse Fever
Confirmed in Maryland
The Maryland State Vet’s Office (Maryland Department of
Agriculture) has announced that Potomac Horse Fever has
been confirmed in two Maryland horses, one of which has
died from the disease.
The two horses confirmed were in Frederick County, and
both horses had been vaccinated. The second horse is
being treated by a private veterinarian and is expected to
recover.
MDA is urging horse owners – especially those with
horses that graze near rivers, streams and creeks – to
watch their horses closely for signs of the disease. Clinical
signs include mild to severe fever, diarrhea, loss of appetite, laminitis, and mild colic. Potomac Horse Fever is
most commonly contracted by horses that ingest infected
aquatic insects such as caddisflies and mayflies.
“Potomac Horse Fever surfaces here every few years,”
said State Veterinarian Michael Radebaugh. “Because it
can be fatal, we urge horse owners to pay special attention
to how their horses feel. The vaccine for Potomac Horse
Fever is not always effective, so we encourage owners to
contact their veterinarian sooner rather than later if they
suspect anything, even if the horse has been vaccinated.”
The vaccine for Potomac Horse fever is not always effective but may lessen the severity of the disease. Horse
owners are advised to follow the recommendations of their
private practitioner concerning vaccination protocols. The
department encourages owners to contact their veterinarian as soon as possible if they suspect anything, even if the
horse has been vaccinated.
Potomac Horse Fever cannot be transmitted from horse
to horse, and people are not at risk; however, veterinarians
who diagnose it must report it to the State Veterinarian.

DE Equine Industry
Directory 2017
By Ken Horeis
Once again, the Delaware Equine Council will
be producing our “Delaware Equine Industry
Directory”. We know that the Directory has
been well received in the past, with many
people keeping a copy in their barn, truck and
house so that they have a quick reference
available whenever they might have a need.
DEC has elected to once again offer the single line listings for FREE, however, we will still
need the categories under which you would
like to be listed, along with your location, a
contact person and phone number. The color
and black/white ad costs will remain the same
as in 2016, as will the cost for format and
printing. Ads must be camera ready, or we
can develop an ad for you at an additional
cost.
Beginning immediately, we are accept ads
and listings for the Directory. If you would like
to appear in the 2017 Directory, please contact Ken Horeis at 302-270-2648 or at [email protected] with any questions. The
deadline for this year is October 20. Provide
your information to us quickly so you don’t
miss out on a great opportunity. We hope that
you have enjoyed the previous Directories
and we look forward to providing you with another quality Directory for 2017.

Directory Cover Photo Contest
The Delaware Equine Council’s Equine Industry Directory is due for release in January of 2017. In 2016, we honored Joan Coble’s horse, Barney,
by placing his photo on the front cover. Barney was a
wonderful gelding who had won the hearts of many.
Wouldn’t it be cool for your horse to be on the front
cover next year! We are looking for a new photo for the
2016 edition. Send in your favorite photo of your horse
to: [email protected].
Contest Rules:
1. Horse/Equine must belong to a member of the
DelawareEquine Council.
2. Name of horse/equine owner and horse must accompany photograph. Feel free to include any
details about the animal. We want to read your
horse’s story.
3. No people, advertising, or signage may be in the photograph.
4. Amateur and professional photographs are permitted. Any professional photographs must be accompanied with permission from the
photographer for the use of the photograph. Photographer’s name,
phone number and email are required.

Delaware Equine Council to use the photograph or art for the purpose
of the Equine Industry Directory or any other publication produced by
the Delaware Equine Council including posting it on the website,
Facebook, newsletters, flyers, etc.
6. Recognition will be given to the winner within the directory.
7. The winning photograph will be selected by the DEC 2017 Directory
Committee based on qualifications, attractiveness, and quality of
image. The image must be of high enough size and resolution for the

Second Chance Ranch of Delaware wants you to
meet Dante – 21 year old registered pure bred dark
bay Arabian gelding. He stands 15 hands tall and
weighs approximately 1000 pounds. Dante is full of
character and loves people. If you like horse hugs and
kisses, you will like Dante. Trained in dressage in his
early years, he remembers almost everything so a refresher would easily bring him back into the dressage
groove. After his dressage years, Dante spent much
time as a hunter horse. He was then asked to perform
as a western horse and adapted as requested. He
cross ties, bathes, loads in the trailer, good for vet and
farrier.
Dante can get a little “hot” when excited such as
coming in for dinner. It’s recommended that someone
that will not be afraid of him adopts him. He honestly
does not want to hurt his human
and tries his best to behave.
Advanced beginner or intermediate rider appropriate.

No Shortcut for Diagnosing Equine Gastric Ulcers
By Kentucky Equine Research-KER
Gastric ulcers occur more frequently in certain groups of
horses: race and endurance horses in training, foals at the
time of weaning, or any horse during times of stress. How
do you know if your horse has one or more ulcers? Usually,
a clear diagnosis can only be achieved if the horse undergoes endoscopic examination, which involves having the
veterinarian pass a long flexible tube with a camera in the
tip into the stomach to directly visualize and assess the defects.
As an alternative, some owners assume their horses
have one or more ulcers if they display classic signs associated with the condition.
“Despite being effective, endoscopy is expensive, invasive, and time-consuming, unfortunately,” explained Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D., a Kentucky Equine Research (KER)
nutritionist, adding “The number of veterinarians that have
the necessary equipment is limited.”
As an alternative, some owners assume their horses
have one or more ulcers if they display classic signs associated with the condition: colic, diarrhea, poor appetite, dull
coat, decreased performance, and possibly behavior
changes.
Recognizing the need for a quick, economical, and effective screening test to help identify horses with ulcers, a
group of researchers recently evaluated whether sucrose, a
simple sugar similar to glucose, could identify ulcers. The
hypothesis was that sucrose passes through ulcerated
stomach tissue and can be measured in blood, indicating
the both the presence and severity of ulceration.
To test the usefulness of sucrose to diagnose ulcers,
Heweston and coworkers* administered sucrose via nasogastric tube to 101 horses either with or without gastric ulcers. Blood sucrose levels were subsequently assessed 45
and 90 minutes after administration.
The researchers found that the test wasn’t as sweet as
they had hoped, concluding that blood sucrose was “neither
a sensitive or specific test for detecting gastric ulcers in
adult horses with naturally occurring ulcers.”
“In addition to dietary and management changes to help
ulcer-prone horses, consider using KER’s research-proven
digestive aid RiteTrac, which supports the health of the
stomach. Horse owners in Australia should look for other
proven digestive aids,” advised Crandell.
