EXILE TO WONDERLAND - A ROSEMARY
FALLON SOLO EXHIBITION
Rosemary is an Artist, teacher, doll maker, designer,
animator and lecturer. Her pop surrealist paintings
were featured in the 2012 release of “Goblin Market:
Irish New Contemporary Art”.
Her women are contemporary icons of modern
femininity, captured in moments of intense emotion
or revelation, sometimes in fantastic backdrops of
surreal dreamscapes or familiar locations where the
observer can recognise their own daily routine.
Working mainly in oils, her work is vibrant and bold,
and this exhibition of her paintings, miniature metal
sculptures, and custom dolls will show the fruits of
TÍReless dedication and persistence.

FIONA LENAGHAN ART EXHIBITION
GRAY MATTER
These are figurative oil paintings, featuring two series.
The first series theme is energy, as depicted both by
the paint and subject matter.
We are two recent graduates from Gray’s School of Art
in the north east of Scotland. Our work stems from
notions of migration, identity, places and non-places.
The second is a series of small paintings depicting the
play of light on Galway people as they shop/walk. The
paintings are lively and eye catching ranging from
very small to large in size. Fiona is a graduate
of G.M.I.T.
Using various imagery both found and photographed
we individually manipulate photographic
documentation of places at the edge both physical
and emotional. Using various tools within
printmaking and digital media we each are
constructing a vagueness and detachment within our
imagery which echoes the psychology of these places.
Though non collaborative in nature, our work exists on
the same road delving into the isolation and
restlessness of modernity. We now wish to showcase
our work in the context of returning home to Ireland.

HIP BATH
LOOM STUDIOS EXHIBITION
LOUISE SPOKES
HIP BATH by Valerie Joyce: ”Look at the time, and not
a child in the house washed yet!” HIP BATH, an
outdoor performance on Galway’s Mainguard Street,
recalls a sense of retro domesticity and a subtle
remembrance of how things used to be. The relic and
now almost redundant, obsolete, and totally
unfamiliar HIP BATH evokes the weekly ritual of
Saturday evening bath time we had grown up with.
This series of artworks is compiled by a group of artists
working from Loom studios in Dublin. All the artists
exhibiting work in various mediums such as, painting,
sculpture, ceramics, drawing, and mixed media.
I am an Artist and Jewellery maker with a BA Honours
Fine & Applied Art Degree from the University of Ulster
(2009), and HND Fine Art, NWIFHE, Derry (2007).
VALERIE JOYCE
LOUISE SPOKES
LOOM STUDIOS
The objective of the exhibition is to showcase the
diversity of work of each artist working from an
independent Dublin based studio.
HIP BATH ablutions were keenly administered as a
vigorously inflicted rite of passage in order to attain
godliness and sanctity. Joyce’s performance is a
slap-stick comedic aspiration for spiritually hygienic
absolution. HIP BATH asks; Is cleanliness next
to godliness?

The artists, working in a variety of media, are
concerned with the idea of questioning established
belief systems and ideas of perception. By
interrogating how our perception of ourselves and the
world around us is shaped by the environments we
inhabit, both physical, metaphysical and cultural,
they build a nuanced image of the individual as they
are constructed within contemporary society.

TANDI ART EXHIBITION
THE BIRDS
Mixed media artist. I love creating ‘happy art’ using
acrylics, ink, fabric, vintage findings and recycled
materials. I am passionate about fairies, hears, birds
and cute whimsical girls.
The Birds is a collection of images of birds, mostly in
flight. I aim to portray both a sense of beauty and
darkness where reality can be distorted creating a
surreal, dreamlike mood.
SYLWIA GRYCZUK
THE LAST TEN MINUTES OF BRAVEHEART
VANESSA JORDAN
I am concerned with the perception of reality and the
distortion /embellishment of the truth. I am also
concerned with the shapes and forms the birds take as
they fly and the capturing releasing of these moments
that the eye can miss or see all too briefly.

CHILDREN OF THE BLACK SKIRT
WHAT’S THE STORY...?
An evocative play, both moving and humorous,
exploring history, childhood innocence and the power
of storytelling. Three lost children discover an
abandoned orphanage. They become trapped in a
timeless world haunted by spirits of the past, ruled by
the Black Skirt, a cruel governess who floats through
the orphanage corridors with her enormous scissors!
The spirits will not rest until their stories are told. From
stories of pock-picketing crimes to the tragedies of
Stolen Generations…
A children’s show full of fun, loud with laughter, silly
with surprises and maybe a song or two too! A fun
theatre experience for children of all ages (and mums
and dads too!) - come along and join in the story that
takes our heroes down a road of adventure.
This play deal with issues of the rights of the child, the
use, and abuse of power and the effects of migration
on a generation.
Written by Paul McCarrick and directed by Claudia
O’Sullivan and Kori Kilduff

MARTIN SHARRY TELLS IT LIKE IT IS
STEVE CUTS HIS OWN FRINGE
THE SKY BABIES
Writer and performer Martin Sharry is exploring the
form of stand-up comedy. This is the start of his
difficult second show, after making his name with his
one man show, ‘I Am Martin Sharry’ which he
successfully performed at the Dublin Fringe
Festival 2012.
Steve Bennett invites you into his barber shop to see
comedians, musicians and a few surprises too.
He now explores the potential for truth saying and
story-telling in the medium of stand-up. And looks at
the necessity of honesty and identifying the
boundaries in this time, through entertainment.
Bennett will bring you the absolute best of Ireland’s
up and coming performers from the Fringe Festival.
An eclectic mix of short cuts and longer sets, this show
is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
Join The Sky Babies and special guests for a freefalling
and spontaneous night of comedy improv! Based on
audience suggestions this dynamic new Galway
comedy group will create fresh comedy scenes and
games on the spot and have you laughing to
touchdown! A great and unique night of
entertainment!

the triple lenses of sexuality, religion and em…facial
hair. Follow Breda as she journeys from ‘getting the
shift’ with the local lads for ‘cream buns n’ snickers’ to
breaking the hearts of her imaginary lesbian camogie
team and cartoon reporter April O’Neill by falling in
love with a beautiful real live girl and becoming a
fully-fledged dickie-bow aficionado.
Written and performed by Breda Larkin with help
from Nicola Depuis.

DANCES OF EGYPT
IN/SIDE THE BOX
ONE LAST DROP
The women’s dances of Egypt are beautiful, rich and
diverse art forms that have evolved over millennia in
an unbroken lineage.
Conformity. Our need to fit in. The desire for freedom.
Sinéad Cormack constructs and dances within a 3D
web in this visually striking and energetic multimedia
dance piece. With lateral leaps of comedy, beautiful
choreography, and a mesmerising soundtrack, In/side
the Box is a true first.
Is it possible to shake off your demons and begin
again? Could you walk away from the most important
thing in your life? Follow the stories of man and
woman as they struggle with an addiction we are all
familiar with, the addiction to alcohol. Watch as their
stories unfold through dance and music and see how
quickly life can fall from happiness and belonging to
destruction and numbness.
AMBER ELDERFIELD
SINEAD CORMACK
Amber and her Egyptian Dance Group present a
showcase of traditional Egyptian Dances from earthy,
hypnotic folkloric dances of Egypt and Nubia to
sensual and passionate urban Baladi; from fiery
Ghawazee (Gypsy) dancing with finger cymbals to the
lyricism of golden era classical dance and some
contemporary interpretations of ancient themes.
Performed by Amber Elderfield and her Egyptian
Dance group.

and read the landscape in different ways. You will be

in the same way you see its contours, rivers
and streets.
The Atlas, as well as other works by its contributors
will be available on site and it will feature a rolling

BLACKHEART NIGHT CLUB
DEAR SALTHILL
FRIENDS ON FACEBOOK - A DIGITAL STORY
Developed by visual artist/designer Stephen Morton,
music producer/engineer Peter Lawlor and influenced
by Italian Giallo Horror, New French Extremity, Detroit
Techno and Drum N’ Bass. An immersive concoction of
all these elements and much more, infusing abrasive
live dance music with a live visual accompaniment to
tell the story of a young girl’s intoxicating experience
at The Blackheart Night Club.
The Dear Salthill Project explores the collective
community memory of the location, past and present.
The process has been documented through the use of
social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram. The exhibition of the work is displayed as a
user generated archive of shared photographs,
comments and memories associated with Salthill.
Friends on Facebook is a digital installation that
explores new ways to tell a story.

NUIG DIGITAL TREE GUIDE
THE MAY 30TH
The video art project was produced by the production
company Lug Media. This is a company that primarily
makes experimental film and video art pieces.
Mairead Manifold, a student of Digital Media at NUIG
has created a digital tree guide to 75 trees around the
Quad in NUIG. QR codes are placed on the trees. Users
simply scan a QR code to access tree details.
The May 30, 2013 is a looped video archive made of
individual photographs of everything my husband
and I own. One object, one frame, 24 frames
per second.
Mairead has been photographing the trees over the
winter, so users can view a timeline of photos taken
through the seasons. The Quad area is home to over
50 different varieties of trees, some of which are
redwoods. So go for a tree walk with a difference.
The photographs were taken over the course of one
day; the light cycle charts the day passing. It makes
the private public and the tangible digital. The process
is obsessive, meditative and physically demanding.

BRENDAN NAUGHTON ON TOUR
CITÓG PRESENTS... RELATIVES
CITÓG PRESENTS... URCHIN COLLECTIVE
Brendan Naughton is native of the shticks of Easht
Galway. He is a singer-songwriter based in Brighton
with a background in theatre and stand-up comedy,
doing a show based on numbers from his forth
coming album, as well as older numbers from comedy
days and random covers.
In their music, Relatives blend the dissonant tonalities
of 20th century music with the unadorned folk songs
of Appalachia. The group was created in New York City
in the fall of 2007 by Ian Davis, Katie Vogel and
Gabriel Gall.
Fia Rua, Pearse McGloughlin, Enda Reilly and Justin
Grounds. Urchin Collective is a movement of
independent musicians based in Ireland operating in
the genres of avant garde electronic, folk, Irish
language, trad, alternative and indie.
Together they self-released two EPs, They Love You
Well (2009) and Tardy Mark (2011) as well as a
full-length album entitled The Relatives (2011),
released on the Museum People label. In the fall of
2011, Gall left the group but Relatives has continued
to write and perform as a duo. Their forthcoming
albums include a self-released, full-band EP as well as
a stripped down, duo EP to be released in Ireland on
the MDR label.
The collective was formed following an impromptu
gig at Electric Picnic 2012 and officially launched in
March 2013 with gigs in Dublin and Cork. They now
bring the show west with a special Citog/Galway
Fringe Festival event in The Cellar Bar.

An accomplished guitarist, Naughton weaves his way
through an assortment of musical styles ranging from
finger-picking country blues to hard rock with a dash
of classical and punk thrown in for good measure. Best
described as a melange of eclecticism all mixed up in
a big cornucopia, go and see him before he goes
electric. (WARNING: MAY BE EXPLICIT)

FROM REELS TO RAGAS
I’LL LIVE TILL I DIE
JULIE HAWK
A new innovative collaboration between highly
respected Irish percussionist Tommy Hayes and
Australian born mongrel Mattu Noone. An exploration
of the harmonious connections and frissons of
difference between Irish traditional compositions and
Indian Classical theory. Expect the unexpected!
Delight in the songs of the iconic balladeer, Delia
Murphy with singer Mairin O’Donovan and musician
Gerry Anderson.
Julie grew up in an eclectic musical household in the
rain-choked West of Ireland, listening to everything
from Bob Dylan to Arvo Pärt.
Delia Murphy was a household name as a radio,
concert and recording star in Ireland and abroad in the
1930’s to 60’s. See the pictures and hear the story of
Delia’s life, told by her niece Carmen Cullen and enjoy
Carmen’s surprise comic character and a dramatised
reading from her novel Two Sisters Singing, loosely
based on Delia’s life.
Following one cloistered winter in 2011, Julie
emerged with a sound and lyrical style wholly her
own, and since then has been captivating audiences
across the UK with her dynamic vocal style and
ethereal lyrics.

CRAIC IN GALWAY
PASSING MOMENTS
SEDUCED BY LIGHT
CRAIC in Galway is an exhibition by Darius Ivan a well
known Slovakian Journalist, who is renowned for his
night life photography around the city.
The debut exhibition by artist/jeweller Elise Dana
Brown as a photographer.
The camera never lies. But it can distort the truth and
present us with a different view of the world around
us. We see the world around us through our eyes; a
photographer sees the world through his camera. This
instrument can be used to manipulate what we see by
applying various techniques, including long shutter
speeds, intentional camera movement, defocusing
and many more.
DARIUS IVAN
ELISE DANA BROWN
His exhibition will show different views of life in
Galway through his lens. Come and see the beauty of
people in Galway having fun, celebrating, or just
living, as Darius sees it.
“When I came to Galway and saw it for the first time
from the hill on Circular Road, I said, now I’m going to
photograph you all. I think I’m nearly there.”

born in the lovely seaside village of Schull in West
Cork. However, it was while travelling in India that she
found her eye for photography. Since then her work
has featured in a number of solo and group
exhibitions in Ireland and abroad.
“Having travelled extensively over the past several
years, I discovered photography as a way of giving
further insight into my experiences and encounters of
different cultures from around the world. My work
portrays people, buildings and scenes from places like
West Africa, India and the Caribbean depicting a
simplicity and realness in their natural everyday
environment.”

CHRIS NICHOLS & NÓIRÍN LYDON
Chris Nichols, who is based in Dublin, and Nóirín
Lydon, from Carna originally but now residing in An
Spidéal, are both photographers.
Nóirín runs an adult Art group during the year in An
Spidéal where they have exhibited most recently at
Galway city library.
Tell Me Your Real Name presents a series of
photographic portraits. The work explores questions
of identity and the idea of self, confronted with social
expectations and standardised archetypical roles
attributed to us by others.
Each image maintains a strict visual code with side,
minimalist lighting and a black background. You are
invited to participate in this project and have your
portrait taken on site.
So bring a costume, a mask or just yourself and your
portrait will too become a part of this exhibition.

BEYOND THERAPY
FROM FREDDY TO LOUIS
LEARNING TO LET GO
Orion’s Belt return after their successful run in last
year’s Galway and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals with
another Durang play.
A one-man show exploring the life of Belfast-born
literary figure Louis MacNeice who is portrayed
mulling over his life in 1963, the year of his untimely
death aged only 55. Known mainly for his poetry and
the radio plays he wrote in London for the BBC, he is
shown here during his last few months in a conjectural
piece drawing on his writings and memories of
friends. MacNeice left his childhood behind to go to
England, working for the BBC in London. His parents
hailed from Connemara while he regarded Dublin as
‘home from home’, so why did he pen the line ‘This
was never my town...’? Known to all as ‘Freddy’, why
did he announce just before leaving school that he
wanted to be called Louis (his middle name) from then
on? Howard Linnane considers possible answers.
Set in the west of Ireland, this story deals with the
difficulty of communication and how a family copes
with unconfronted issues, past and present. John
returns home from abroad on a surprise visit, only to
discover some surprises awaiting him: a troubled
sister, ageing parents and different ways of dealing
with reality.
ORION’S BELT THEATRE
HOWARD LINNANE
An insane, fast-paced, quirky comedy set in 80’s
America about a bizarre dinner date between a lonely
woman, Prudence, and an eccentric striaght-talkin’
man, Bruce, who has a jealous lover, Bob.
All the characters are in therapy with therapists who
are even more mentally messed.
Directed by Paula Dempsey.

LET ME BE
LIKE A MARBLE ROLLED
MADE TO SHIVER
‘Let Me Be’ by Maria Tivnan. Performed by Kate
Murray and Maria Tivnan. Directed by Tracy Bruen.
A contemporary epic poem that tells the story of a
journey two friends make across a fictional city.
Laura and Molly are two sisters who according to those
in the town ‘have had it hard’. Two very different
personalities, their deep bond and ability for
imaginative play see them through harsh memories
and a dark past.
Created and performed by Phoebe Dick, the
production incorporates hand made acetate slides
which illustrate and support the story, while allowing
the beautifully crafted writing that forms the
backbone of the piece take centre stage.
1 play, 2 stories. Lippy and Mini are waiting to take us
on a blaze through real Irish culture. The stories are
rooted in the context of last summer with the events
that unfolded at the Swedish House Mafia Concert and
Katie Taylor’s Olympic exploits.
A tender and sincere exploration of childhood and
sisterhood, employing Fregoli’s trademark character
changing style with energy, humour, and colour. After
a very successful tour this February Fregoli are
delighted to bring back Let Me Be to their native
Galway for this year’s Fringe Festival.
Phoebe’s delivery, in a style that’s sits comfortably
between spoken-word and good old fashioned
storytelling, combined with the projected visuals and
the strength of the writing, makes “Like A Marble
Rolled” a unique, captivating and thoroughly
enjoyable show.

MAKING LEMONADE
MARTIN SHARRY TELLS IT LIKE IT IS
ME AND STABBY MCGEE
In recent years, Dublin has been labelled the murder
and gun-crime capital of Europe. More and more of
the capital’s young men have been led to the gun to
settle disputes. This is a white-knuckle ride into the
underworld of gangland and gun-crime culture,
dealing with the damage, destruction and despair of a
day in the life.
Writer and performer Martin Sharry is exploring the
form of stand-up comedy. This is the start of his
difficult second show, after making his name with his
one man show, ‘I Am Martin Sharry’ which he
successfully performed at the Dublin Fringe
Festival 2012.
A dark, surreal comedy centred around a serial killer
(‘Stabby’) and his long suffering housemate (‘Me’).

It’s a rare moment of innocence in a play that is just as
funny as it is gritty” **** - The Herald.

MEAT
MOTH AND BUTTERFLY
MY FIRST GUN
The commodification of bodies is a universallyaccepted form of commerce. Be it animals
slaughtered, prostitutes offering themselves or
performers entertaining, something more than
money is transferred when the product is flesh and
blood, when seller and product are the same. How
does buying the dead body of a being compare to
buying the live body of another? Set in a brothel run
by Demo, a gifted hawker and collector of beauty, the
exquisite specimens in his menagerie are Anezka,
glamorous, esoteric courtesan, Shóna, hard-bitten
veteran of the street, and Miriam, whose speciality is
everything. Enter Free, a young mother desperate to
make money for the sake of her son. Written by Robin
Oree and directed by Robin Oree & Claudia O’Sullivan.
Moth & Butterfly is an innovative night, combining
the art forms of Storytelling and Improvisation Each
night has a unique theme, and tellers share and create
stories to fit this theme. For our Fringe Festival Show
in July, the theme is ‘Bread and Butter’. There will be
three types of Storytelling on the night: Moth style
stories must be short, true, thematic, and feature the
teller themselves as a character. Improvised stories
will be created fresh on the spot – no two are the
same! Freefall stories are all other stories that still fit
the theme – from fiction to fairytales, from tall tales to
a story in a song. Audience members may sign up on
the night to tell a story. The night is for both tellers
and listeners, for without good listeners; there would
be no good stories!

deal, but things aren’t all straight forward when
you’re a girl.”

SIDESHOW PRODUCTIONS
DHÁ LAIMH THEATRE
THIS HAPPENED IN THE CITY JAIL
THIS IS THE DAY
The live show will a new incarnation of this stupidity. It
will feel like three friends got together over the
weekend and devised a show to entertain their
other friends.
‘This Happened in the City Jail (The Story of Hansel
and Gretel)’ is a contemporised version of the original
fairytale which upends itself with a massive twist in
it’s tail.
Reasonably tight dances and movements tell wordless
stories. Recurring characters such as the incorrigible
“Murphy” make an appearance, as do the distinctive
comedy voices of the three individual friends, Tom,
Dick and Martin. Think Tim and Eric plus one other
one, minus the brains.
It is very post-modern in construction and has been
part inspired by the author working with the prisoners
in Mountjoy Jail.
The best day of your life. Everyone said it. The day
when you were eight and you wore that white dress.
When you got the cards and the money and the smiles
and the neighbours saying you were perfect. And you
were. Or is it just that nothing has been perfect since? VENUE 32

A snapshot of present day rural Ireland; in a
community where everyone knows everyone and
everything is as it’s always been and always will be. With razor sharp dialogue and a wallop of black
comedy, Cristin Kehoe delivers an explosive new
drama ready to set tongues wagging.

TÍR NA NÓG
TOMORROW’S DAWN
TOWERBLOCK ANGEL
Oisín falls head over heels in love with Niamh and
follows her to a distant land. We all know the story,
but this play doesn’t take place fadó fadó, rather
Dublin, December 2012.
Lively, funny, sparkling, sensitive, delirious, this
musical is about love and friendship. It also explores
intergenerational relationships: between young
people and parents, young people and teachers,
young people between themselves. A kind of
immersion into the heart of the youth nowadays, in all
its complexity.
Sukitheatre presents Towerblock Angel by Ciarán
Coogan. Gabriel was the right hand man, translated
the word, appeared to the people. The word of the
boss, the big man, up in the sky, top of the tower
block. Ruled with an iron hand, the Lord.
EMBELLIES THÉATRE - LA PETITE FAMILLE
JUST FRIENDS
It’s been three months since Oisín fell for Niamh and
followed her over to London. Now he’s home for
Christmas and things aren’t quite how he left them…
A play about love, friendship, life and the desire not to
be left behind.
Written and directed by Aisling Smith with Michael
O’Toole, Colm Kenny-Vaughan, David Copland and
Rachel Roche.

A multifaceted sweep through Joyce’s novel. As Joyce
drew on a panoply of literary tradition, this physical
theatre piece draws from buffoonery, clown, music
hall, corporeal mime etc. to enliven the text.
Kenneth is passionate about two things: food & sex.
He has left his wife of 19 years, Hilary, for Laura. Hilary
was great in the kitchen but their sex life was
non-existant.
The show is an intensely black comedy, a tour de force
of trash and zany fun. A riotous evening guaranteed.
Written by Debbie Isitt.

PER VERSE MEDIA
Now the tower block is being knocked, God’s going
out of business and has disappeared. The people have
stopped believing. Angels are falling to earth, Gabriel
has dirty hands and dirty feet. The people have been
lied to. The people want their piece of flesh and they
are pointing at Gabriel. He prays for the second
coming...

An evocative play, both moving and humorous,
exploring history, childhood innocence and the power
of storytelling. Three lost children discover an
abandoned orphanage. They become trapped in a
timeless world haunted by spirits of the past, ruled by
the Black Skirt, a cruel governess who floats through
the orphanage corridors with her enormous scissors!
The spirits will not rest until their stories are told. From
stories of pock-picketing crimes to the tragedies of
Stolen Generations…
This play deal with issues of the rights of the child, the
use, and abuse of power and the effects of migration
on a generation.

THEATRE OF THE OPPRESSED
The inner journey is the ultimate adventure. Art
illuminates this journey. Expanding your life is central
to the adventure.
The best way to understand Theatre of the Oppressed
is to experience it!
SINEAD HACKETT
Dr. Wasserman will provide experiences that
illuminate and encourage positive life expansion.
This is a two day workshop which introduces the
techniques of Augosto Boals’ “Theatre of the
Oppressed” where the outcome will be creating a
piece of image theatre on the streets of Galway.
Theatre of the Oppressed engages people in
discovery, critical reflection and dialogue and the
process of liberation. Through Theatre of the
Oppressed we can better understand ourselves, our
communities and our world.
