Installing Espion V5
I
nstalling Espion V5
Introduction
The Espion V5 comes with a lot of new features and enhancements including a new underlying
database. The new database is not directly compatible with the old style Espion database but the
Espion V5 software will enable you to update you to the new format.
New installation
If you have don't have a previous installation of the Espion software on your computer you can just
run the Espion V5 Setup.exe file which will install the Firebird database server and client and the
Espion V5 software.
Upgrade existing Espion
If you already have an installation of the Espion software there are a few things that you must do first
to remove the old installation of the Interbase client and server from your computer. The current
software version is shown on the front menu of your existing Espion software along with the release
date and the Espion serial number which should be the same as the console serial number found on
the back of the console.
NOTE: This is also true if you have other software applications installed that uses an Interbase
database.
Windows Vista
For installation on Windows Vista see separate application note.
Installing on a new Computer
You can install the Espion V5 software both on a computer with or without hardware connected (You
may have another machine for report writing). If you computer never have had an installation of the
Espion software follow the guidelines below (for Windows Vista installation see separate application
note):
l Run the Espion V5 Setup.exe and install the included software (Firebird Server & Client and
Database Manager) in the default directories (unless you want to install the software on a
Client/Server network where the Server may not reside on the same machine as the client. Note
that the Espion database file has to be physically located on the Server machine).
If you have hardware connected (Console and one or more stimulators) you must install the
hardware drivers.
l Plug the Espion console into the computer and point to the Espion USB drivers in the Espion
directory
l If applicable plug the ColorDome camera USB cable into the computer and point to the Camera
drivers (you may have to run the camera installation program first)
l Copy the calibration files from the CD into the Espion directory (COLDxxx.CAL (ColorDome),
COLBxxx.CAL (ColorBurst) or PSGxxx.CAL (pattern stimulator) where xxx=serial number of the
stimulator)

Configure the Espion system
C
onfigure the Espion system
System Configuration defines all the features which appear when configuring and running tests with
the Espion. This covers basic information such as the hospital name and the current date & time, but
also includes the ability to alter both the defaults and the actual values which appear as options in
many of the menus throughout the system.
A full list of all system configuration parameters is to be found at the back of this manual.
Fig 1 Espion start up menu
The "Configure System" menu is reached from the front page button.
Pre-configured parameter values
Throughout the Espion program, there are many menus of values and options which may need to be
configured. Some are accessible only in protocol configuration, and some can be accessed during
the test depending on your authorization level.
Most parameters can be set by touching the parameter entry box and selecting from a 2D grid of
possible values which will appear on the screen. The Espion is factory programmed with a list of
pre-configured parameter values for each of these boxes and a default value already selected from
the list. However, to make the system extremely flexible, both the defaults and the lists themselves
can normally be changed by using this System Configuration menu. You may want to add values to
the current list, or you may want to limit the list of values displayed in order to maintain compatibility
between tests, and avoid unsuitable values being selected (especially if many different people use
the system).
Default value
The Espion program is built around the concept of modules. Not only do all module parameters come
with a list of pre-configured values they also come with one value in the list being set as the default
option. This is the value that will be used when creating new protocols or tests, new subjects, new
normals etc.
Example
Consider the setting for result post trigger duration in the acquisition menu of the VEP-ERG protocol.
You can normally select any value from the list: 100ms, 200ms, 250ms, 300ms, 400ms, etc. But you
may decide that you wish to run a test with a trial duration of 150ms, or some other value which does
not appear. Provided that this value is within certain limits, you can add it to the list. You can also
change the default to be 150ms such that all new steps will by default have this parameter set to
150ms, and remove all the unwanted values from the list.

Restricting access to configure system
It is possible to restrict the access to the "Configure System" menu by requesting the user to enter a
password.
If you set the Configure System\Global\operator mode parameter is to INVESTIGATOR a
password will be required to enter the configure system menu. The Configure System entry
password is set in the Configure System\Global\operator password parameter.
Default password
If operator mode is left at ADMINISTRATOR the password is set in the Operator password
parameter and the default is "masterkey". (Other Operator modes are only provides for backwards
compatibility) You have to be in ADMINISTRATOR mode to view the full list of all System Configure
parameters. The full list is not available for the INVESTIGATOR.
Fig 2 Configure System\Global\Operator mode parameter
NOTE: If password was requested in the Password option parameter you will still have to set up
the Operator Mode to INVESTIGATOR if you want to password protect the Configure System menu.
Parameter storage
The Espion program is built around the concept of modules where each module has a unique set of
parameters and parameter values which control its behavior. These lists of parameters and their
values are stored depending on how the system is configured.
Priority in loading
The system configuration parameters can be stored in different locations and the order of priority
when loading the parameter value lists is highest Local followed by Global and lastly Defaults.

Selecting a parameter module
All parameters are grouped into logical modules (groups). In order to change a parameter, you must
first select the module which contains it. It should be quite easy to find the appropriate module, as
each one relates to a different section of the program. The list of modules which appears will vary
depending on which hardware and software modules you have chosen to purchase.
When a module is chosen, the parameters for that module will be shown. The number of parameters
shown will vary depending on the current operator mode selected. If you are using Administrator
operator mode then all parameters will be available. If you are using Investigator mode then only the
most useful parameters will be displayed, removing the clutter of unnecessary parameters spoiling
the view.

Module options
Module Enabled
This parameter at the top of each Testmethod and Stimulus parameter list enables/disables the
particular module. This is useful if a e.g.piece of hardware is no longer available e.g. a stimulator or
you wish to deny access to certain tests or stimuli. Only external modules can be disabled and when
disabled will not appear and will not be available for use by the program.
For example if you disable the Color Burst stimulus module, then no protocols will appear that use
this module, no new protocol can be created using this module and no tests already performed using
this module will be available for review.
Information
Displays information about the selected software module. This information normally includes a
version number and other relevant facts about the module or hardware it supports. This information
may be required by the manufacturer in order to provide technical support. The information displayed
is constantly being updated, such that changes in hardware will be automatically reflected e.g.
pressing the ColorBurst buttons, will change the button status.
Configure the colors
This may appear when certain modules are selected, although not all modules have this option. If
this button si displayed, then the module has a custom method of changing some or all of its
parameters in a more helpful manner than simply typing in a number or string. This facility makes
setting certain types of parameters much easier particularly color parameters where it is very helpful
to be able to see the color you are entering. The text on this button may vary depending on the
module. Two modules that do use this button are the ColorBurst and pattern stimulator modules.
These allow you to add/delete/modify colors using a color picker system. For more information on
how to use this system see stimulator Colors on page 16.
Changing parameter values
All the parameters names for the selected module appear on the left hand side of the screen, and on
the right hand side the default value for this parameter is displayed (press the box to display the full
list of values). A parameter can also show a disabled/enabled tick box or a Configure colors button.

Stimulator Colors
Certain stimulus generators can have programmable colors which are set using the Color button in
the parameter list. Colors are stored separately for each stimulator, but the way you choose them is
similar.
Working with color
The Espion’s color facilities are designed to further research into the exciting field of color visual
electrophysiology, and to allow the emerging clinical protocols to be performed reproducibly and
easily.
However, any visual electro-physiologist who has not previously studied color should be aware that
color vision and the technology for representing color are complex subjects, raising many issues
which will not be apparent without a reasonable working knowledge of these fields.
Color lists
Stimulus modules that produce color stimuli, choose the color(s) from a predefined list saved in the
module’s parameters. This list can be modified in a intuitive manner by selecting from a color
diagram rather than typing the color in directly. These lists are normally configured with a few
common default colors. Colors are internally stored in CIE coordinates but may be created using
other color spaces. The luminance of the color presented by the stimulus is controlled by protocol
parameters and is not defined at this point.
Default colors
Red, green, blue
The Espion is initially set up with red, green and blue corresponding to the three LEDs or phosphors
of the ColorBurst, ColorDome or Pattern Stimulator. These colors can be edited or deleted if
desired.
Peak
Peak is the brightest color (white) which can be produced (i.e. maximum red, blue and green
together). This color is a special case which is created if you enter 0,0 as the CIE coordinates. Again,
you can delete this color if you wish, and you may want to create your own white with a different color
balance, by creating a new color with real CIE coordinates.
Modifying color lists
To modify the color list for a particular stimulus module, select the module and press the Color
button.
This will produce a menu showing the current colors and allow further colors to be defined or current
entries to be deleted.
Selecting a color
To select a color for modification, touch the entry in the color list. This will not only select the color
but if the stimulator is connected and enabled, will be displayed by the stimulator.

max intensity
Each stimulator has its own color gamut (range of achievable colors and luminances), which
depends on the characteristics of its three phosphors or LEDs. This area will display the maximum
luminance for the current color if it lies in the stimulator color gamut otherwise it will display zero.
If the color can be created, a non-zero value will be displayed. This is the maximum luminance (in
cd.s.m-2) at which the color can be displayed. Check that this is bright enough for your purposes.
Save color
When the color is as required, touch this button to save it. It will then appear as an option in the
relevant menus for the stimulator.
Color Picker
The color picker is designed to make creating colors as obvious as possible. The color space is
selected at the bottom and the limits of the color space are displayed in the main area. The colors
displayed on the screen are the computer’s best attempt at showing the colors available but
remember that the computer displays color space and that of the stimulator may be different and
therefore these colors can only be used as a guide. You can move the color position around the
space either by touching the screen and dragging the cross or using the red arrow keys. You can
also drag the arrow in the X or Y axes to restrict motion to one axis only.

Color space
The color can be represented in different color spaces by selected from the tab at the bottom of the

The Espion software is written around an industry standard SQL server/client indexed relational
database which stores all the patient information, test details, test results, protocols and normals in
one database file.
Client/Server
All systems from Diagnosys are supplied with a local server, client interface, database manager and
the Espion program pre-installed.
The server program handles the simultaneous logons from the clients, prioritizes data access,
locks/unlocks data records and verifies all user passwords and the client interface software which
allows a client program access to the server program. The server program can also be installed onto
a remote computer connected via a TCP/IP network. The client interface must always be installed
onto the same computer as the Espion program (client program). The database file must reside on
the physical machine hosting the server, not on a mapped drive.
Database Security
There are two security modes to run the Espion program. Restrictions to the database are turned on
and off from the Configure System\PROGRAM\DATABASE\Password options parameter

If you have selected password protection the username and password is prompted at log on and the
user role is read from the database. One username can only have one role. Adding users and
passwords and assigning them database roles is done from the database manager see page 22.
The server keeps a list of users which is applicable for all database controlled by this server. Users
are assigned database privileges (roles) to a particular database. The system administrator need to
assign users to roles for each database. The authenticated user can be given one of five roles with
restriction of viewing, modifying and deleting of records.
Role
Access
Viewer
View records only. No adding, modifying or deleting subjects or
protocols and no running of new tests.
Reviewer
The same as a viewer + ability to review (add review comments and
actions) and modify old tests (move markers) and save them.
Technician
Add new subjects, run and save tests, Limited run-time
environment. no modify or delete subjects, protocols and old tests.
No ability to review test.
Investigator
Add, modify or delete all records. Run new tests, review old tests.
No ability to setup users, passwords or roles
System administrator
The same as the investigator + ability to add/modify/delete users,
passwords and roles. Can set password protection on the configure
system menu and has access to extra configure system
parameters. Access to the database audit trail
When the user logs on with username and password their username and role are displayed at the
top of most windows. If the user hasn't been allocated a role for the current database the Espion
program will log on the user as a viewer with the default role PUBLIC.
NOTE: The software has a built in audit trail that logs every insert, modification or deletion of data. If
you want to have the full benefit of the built in system security you will need to implement the
password protection option.

Database backup
D
atabase backup
Although the Espion program has many built in features to prevent you from loss of data due to e.g.
power cut it can never be stressed enough that you always should backup your data and store a
copy of the data somewhere else.
Backing up is performed from the Database Center and requires making a copy of the database
file(s). This can be done either through Windows copy/paste or using the Espion Backup function.
Backing up the database file regular is essential for record recovery in the case of serious system
failure. The program can be configured to prompt the user to perform regular backups. The next
required backup date is displayed in the Database Control center window. The program will keep
reminding the user every time the program is started until the backup has been done. The frequency,
destination path and next date for the backups are set from Configure
System\Program\database.
Fig 7 Configuring backups
Backup frequency
Backup frequency can be set to one of the following options:
The "Every Session" option will prompt for a backup if any changes have been made to the
database.

Backup destination
Database backup
The program (WindowsXP only) will run the CD burning wizard automatically if the backup
destination is configured as the path to the CD RW (For DVD's you have to use the supplied DVD
burning software for the backup). To set up the backup destination as the CD RW use Windows
Explorer to identify the drive letter of the CD RW e.g. D:\ . The D drive is the default CD RW on the
Espion Panel PC. Point the backup destination to this path. The CD wizard can also be automatically
started by entering the destination path can as:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD
Burning
where username is to be replaced with a valid username with the required permissions on the
system to access the CD RW.
Other backup destination options include:
l USB memory Key
l Removable hard drive
l Accross the network
l Copy the database ".fdb" file using Windows copy
NOTE: Save any changes to the configuration when prompted.
Backup next date
The next required backup date can be set from configure system. If the backup isn't performed the
system will keep nagging the user until they have performed a backup.
Autobackup
During the test, data is automatically saved to a temporary file after every result but not written
permanently to the database until you have pressed the "Exit" button and saved the test. The system
keeps the last 20 autobackup files. The temporary files are used to recover data if the system goes
down (e.g. a power cut or a software problem) in the middle of a test. When the system comes back
up you have the option of being returned back into the last test after the last recorded result.
You can restore unsaved data from any of the 20 autobackup files see separate Application Note.

Customizing the subject fields
Enable and disable subject fields
The system can be configured to require certain patient fields be filled in, ignored, or disabled
whenever a new patient is added. Every patient field available has one of four code numbers
assigned to it which denotes one of the following:
l The field is disabled and greyed out (0)
l The field does not need to be entered (1)
l The field must be entered (2)
l The field is disabled and hidden (3)
This configuration is setup in the Configure System\database\Subject Field Codes. The
parameter consists of a series of numbers or codes which specify the option for each field. e.g.
01112111011112. The subject field code, the subject field name and the subject field print parameter
all relate to the same subject field and this way determines the name of the field, if it is displayed and
if it is displayed on printouts and when exporting using drag and drop.
