Hello Spring!
Springtime in Colorado creates a sense of renewal and a fresh perspective
as we move into summer. Springtime also means it is time for the premier
design event of the year, the 2012 Crystal Awards. This issue of the magazine celebrates the 2012
Crystal Awards winners.
Each year, we gather as a design community to CELEBRATE DESIGN. Interior designers
proudly submitted projects for award consideration, months earlier. The award buzz begins and
colleagues, industry partners and sponsors are equally proud of the projects they supported.
After all, it takes a team! May 1st arrives and by the end of the evening, we have inspired others,
reconnected with friends, shared stories, met new people, and made future plans with each
other. The celebration represents the richness of relationships, community, and collaboration.
A huge THANK YOU goes out to the dedicated Crystal Awards Committee, their fearless leader,
Kelly Petty, Chairperson, and Melissa Buffington, Director at Large. They created an exciting
new Crystal Awards experience at the History Colorado Center. I am grateful, on many levels,
for the leadership of our keynote speaker, Lisa Henry, FASID, ASID National President. Her
devotion to the interior design profession has positively impacted all designers.

The 2012 Crystal Awards

The 2012 Crystal Awards played to a sold out venue at History
Colorado Center May 1st. The Crystal Awards is ASID Colorado’s
largest event of the year to celebrate and recognize the best design from
Colorado interior designers. This year’s theme was: Past…Forward.
Honoring the rich, iconic design of the past while applauding the
inspired interiors of today.
The evening began with cocktails in the Mountain Terrace area, overlooking the beautiful skyline and Rocky Mountains. Folks were also
able to peruse the Museum’s exhibits. We then moved to the spectacular Atrium. History Colorado Center opened April 28th, so ours was
the first event in the Atrium, where over 325 people enjoyed a
wonderful dinner and conversation.
Guest speakers were Lisa Henry, FASID, LEED AP, ASID National
President, Cindy Senger, ASID, LEED AP, ASID Colorado Chapter
President, and David Tryba, FAIA, architect of History Colorado
Center.
Interior designers and architects submitted their entries in December,
and judging occurred electronically. We were fortunate to have 18
judges, 3 each from 6 different chapters, resulting in a diverse group
evaluating the entries. Thereafter, 120 entrants in nineteen categories
were highlighted during a video production of their photos, with
winners being awarded the Crystal in Commercial, Residential and
Student categories, with the culmination of two Judges’ Merit Awards
in Commercial and Residential.
The huge undertaking of an event with this scope could not be done
alone. The volunteer hours from a terrific committee this year made the
evening a great success. Committee members were: Melissa
Buffington, ASID, LEED AP; Lynn Williamson, ASID, LEED AP; April
Kemerling, ASID; Bridget Loney, Allied ASID; Kristen Terjesen, ASID;
Caitlyn Smith, Industry Partner ASID; Joanne Smith, Media Sponsor;
Paul Tate, Industry Partner, ASID; Kelly Mather, Student ASID and
Robin DeRuyter, Student ASID. In addition, the many sponsors,
vendors and the ASID Colorado Board contributed to make this
evening a celebration of interior design at its finest.

Is Pinterest in your best interest?

It’s the fastest growing social media site since Facebook. It has more
members than LinkedIn, more face-time than Twitter and it probably
targets your client base perfectly. But despite all the glowing endorsements and stats, is Pinterest in your best interest?
If you are a creative – and we know ASID Colorado members ARE – the
answer is not necessarily clear-cut. But, before I answer the question,
let’s review what is known about Pinterest.
If you haven’t been initiated, Pinterest is an invitation-only web-based
pinboard site. Users create their own categories of interest and start
‘pinning’ images found from other sites, from their own photos or from
other Pinterest user boards. Here is some useful terminology for you if
you haven’t scoped this site out before:
• Pin: An image added to Pinterest.
• Repin: An image copied from one Board and
re-pinned to another Board.
• Board: A named collection of pins. Named
by the owner it represents a category of
interest.
• Following: Other Pinterest members whose
boards you are subscribing to.
• Followed: Person who is following you
• Like: Just like Facebook, you can ‘like’ a pin
without re-pinning it.
• Comment: Just like Facebook, you can
comment on a pin, without repinning.
You can see on the pin to the left, that
‘Victoria / vmac&cheese’ pinned an image
This is a Pin
onto a board called ‘Kitchens’, and that this
image has 2 Likes, 1 Comment and 20 people have re-pinned it. You can
also see that the system has provided a space for my comment if desired.
The next level of Pinterest is a Board. A Board is a collection of photos
pertaining to a single subject. The image below is a board called ’50
Projects under $50’ from Lowe’s.
What this shows you is how Pinterest organizes the images, and you can
see a good example of how to caption a pin so that it can be found in their
search function. In the upper right hand, you can follow this board, if
following, you can always unfollow, it tells you how many people are
following this board, and how many pins the board contains. The
imagery is high-quality, compellingly cropped, and visually appealing.
You can arrange the board to select your cover photo and the order of the
images pinned. Best practices say that each board should have a
minimum of 10 pins.
I have to assume at this point you are starting to see how this might be an
interesting tool for an interior designer to promote their vision, style,
aesthetic, interests and even their own work. You would be right about
that, but let’s take a look at a creative endeavor, Rent the Runway, which
is commercially engaged in selling their services to the public and see
how they have successfully managed to use Pinterest.
This is Rent the Runway’s Site page. Note the multiple boards and the
imagery formatting.
On Rent the Runway’s main page you see that they’ve included a banner
at the top establishing their brand and a brief statement of purpose. You
can easily see who they have been re-pinning from and in the ribbon
below the banner are the stats for the whole site: 33 boards, 1861 Pins, 8
Likes, 3043 Followers, and they are Following 49 other boards. Their
boards have interesting descriptions and a selection of the pins that make
you want to look further, and the option to follow only that board, or to
Follow All boards.
What makes RTR successful is that they do not ONLY pin the products
they are trying to sell. You see, this is selling in the age of Social Media,
where you share yourself first, present an interesting viewpoint or talent,
and create a following. From there, perhaps your following will be interested enough to follow a link to your Facebook page, your website or
your blog.
That is not to say that no one tries to sell directly from their Pinterest
boards, just that 1) those boards are not very interesting, and 2) that isn’t
really what Pinterest is about.

Pinterest is available in many flavors; you can access it from your
computer and an internet browser, on your iPhone or iPad, but it is
currently unavailable from Pinterest on the Android mobile platform. There are some Pinterest clones out there, but none have the
reach of the original.
Demographics for the site are approximately 90% females, mostly
between the ages of 24-54. While the company is based in Silicon
Valley, it first took hold in the Midwest and has been spreading
quickly since then. As more and more people use Pinterest to
catalog their aspirations, desires and interests, those demographics
will expand.
So, now that you know what Pinterest can do, we should discuss the
dark side – you know there is ALWAYS a dark side, right?
Much was made earlier this year when a photographer who was
pinning her own work to her boards and allowing her pins to be
shared, discovered that under the company’s Terms of Service that
anything pinned to a Pinterest board became Pinterest’s to sell.
Pretty scary stuff for an artist who makes her living from selling
images! She took down all her boards and posted an entry on her
blog that made the cyber-world light up. She explained why she,
reluctantly, took down her boards and challenged the company to
do the right thing and even told the CEO to call her. You can read

Well, guess what? The CEO did call her! And, as of April 6 2012,
Pinterest has new Terms of Service that expressly states that
imagery copyrights are retained by the owner of the image (usually
the photographer or publisher). They’ve made it more apparent
who is the originator of the pin, and made it very easy for the
owners of images to report copyright & trademark violations –
which will make others think twice about pinning an image for
which they do not own the copyright.
Just like everything else, Pinterest is a story of ‘buyer beware’.
There are lots and lots of good reasons to embrace the trend - just
be certain that you know what you are getting into.

• You will need to work on it on your own to become proficient. Your
best guidebook when working with Revit is – you guessed it – Google.
• The fastest way to learn it is to use it! Don’t be afraid to play around
with all the different options and settings to see how they affect things.
That’s what the “undo” button is for!
It may sound like a time-consuming challenge, but for commercial
designers, knowing Revit and knowing it well is quickly becoming a
necessity. Learn it sooner rather than later. Your resume will thank you!

Wine and Design

A visit to the Denver Design Center for the
ASID’s Wine and Design event on February 23,
2012 proved to be more than just wine drinking
and showroom browsing, although these were
indeed the highlights of the event. The evening
presented an opportunity to mingle with a
roomful of designers and enthusiasts of décor,
everyone from non-member guests, to new
student members, to ASID board members.
The night’s centerpiece, however, was surely
the wine drinking experience presented in
each showroom- a sort of, vino-showroom
crawl. The wine was provided by Tiffany
Steakley from WineShop at Home, a winery in
Napa Valley, California that specializes in
Artisan limited production wines. You can
purchase any of the wines presented at the
Wine and Design event for extremely reasonable pricing. The wines tasted were a semiseco sparkling, a sauvignon blanc, a
chardonnay, a dolcetto, a merlot, a cabernet
sauvignon, and a dessert wine. Each was
exclusive to this event.
In addition, each showroom provided food
pairing, everything from fresh fruit and cheese
to cucumber sandwiches. The sponsors and
showrooms visited were as follows; Edelman
Leather, Lexington Home Brands, Hoff Miller
Ltd., Columbine Showroom, Design Materials,
Chuck Wells and Associates, Materials
Marketing, and DSKB. Each showroom
impressed and delighted the attendees on this
night with examples of gorgeous and unique
designs. Hopefully, the ASID Wine and
Design will become an annual event!

Design Center.
Colorado Garden and Home Show 2012

With gardens starting to bloom a little earlier this year, and perhaps a
glimmer of hope on the economic front, people were out in droves to
attend the Spring Colorado Garden and Home show this past February.
Our local chapter was approached by the CGHS to take part in the Fall
Show last September and again in February at the Spring show. By sponsoring our booths, we formed an alliance with the Home Show Director,
Jim Fricke to bring a new element to both shows. We were given the
opportunity to present different topics to a wide audience and to educate
the public in what we do.

Allied members that
volunteered put together
some beautiful vignettes
to attract passersby with a
welcome relief from the
typical “Sham Wow”
products. We were spreading the message of “Why hire a Designer” and
“What exactly does a designer do”.
The Colorado Garden and Home Show is a non-profit organization and
gives scholarships away to deserving students who are interested in
Landscape Design and agricultural studies. We had a chance to meet a
couple of students who were enlisted to help us with the audio/visual
component of our presentations and they were appreciative of what the
CGHS has done for them. Many would not be going to college without the
scholarship they had received.
The shows were well attended and the designers involved had a lot of fun
putting it all together. It was a lot of work, but for the effort put in, I think
we all agreed it was a successful venture and one that we would like to
continue.
We are already making plans for the Fall show, meetings will start in May.
We have already been offered even more space than the past two sessions.

Emerging Designers Debut at ASID Mixer

Denver has had its debutant events for decades; now ASID has had its
own introduction of new and emerging interior designers to the professional community. On March 8, 2012, the ASID Membership Committee
and Bobbie Jo Kinsey, ASID 2012 Chair of the Emerging Professionals
committee, invited recent ID graduates and new designers to meet their
seasoned professional colleagues and build strong networks in the
community.
If you have ideas for future emerging designers’ events, please contact
Bobbie Jo at [email protected] … and remember, always bring
plenty of business cards and meet 3 people you have never met at each
event you attend.
More than 37 members attended the event which was hosted at the
Ethan Allen Design Center in Centennial in one of their dining area
showrooms. With a gorgeous view of the sunset over the Rockies,
members enjoyed delicious appetizers and Menage a Tois wine while
making new and renewed professional connections in the design
community.
ASID Colorado President Cindy Senger, ASID, Membership Director Bob
Hobson and Communications Director Mike Sutton welcomed the new
ID graduates and promised that there will be future events ensuring that
the chapter provides interaction and value for all ASID emerging professionals.
Kinsey said that she intends to grow this group, “ASID wants to continue
to support and develop new ID professionals as they explore new
connections, continue to learn, and expand our knowledge of the field.”
Bobbie Jo is eager to hear from new ASID members so that she can build
on this first emerging designers’ gathering and continue to enhance
opportunities for ID professionals in Colorado.
March Educational Program
Google SketchUp

On Saturday, March 31st, ASID Colorado’s Programs Committee
hosted an educational event sponsored by Steelcase and held at
Industry Partner OfficeScapes’ beautiful showroom. Members and
non-members gathered at OfficeScapes for two 3-hour crash courses
in the popular 3D modeling software, SketchUp, by Google.
SketchUp allows designers to draw 3D rooms so that they may see in
advance how a room will look with their furniture, fixture, fabric and
finish selections. Both an introductory as well as an advanced course
were offered and both courses were taught by long-time SketchUp
user, Josh Brewinski of Stantec . Jo McWilliams of Steelcase and
Marci Auston of OfficeScapes volunteered to assist with the classes
and also provided a wonderful breakfast and lunch, catered by
Panera Bread.
The day began with the advanced course. Designers attending this
course were required to have a working knowledge of SketchUp and
were attending this class to gain a greater depth of knowledge into
the program. The time was spent showing the attendees additional
plug-ins to make their drawings look better and to make the program
functions work more easily. Attendees were also able to ask questions and had some one-on-one time with the instructor.
The afternoon session was for the beginning SketchUp user. The
instructor assumed that the attendees had no prior working knowledge of SketchUp and the class time was spent introducing the major
commands and receiving tips on pitfalls to avoid. Toward the end of
the class there was an introduction to importing floor plans into
SketchUp from AutoCAD and also on importing furnishings, fabrics
and finishes into SketchUp drawings.
While these courses were not intended to give attendees an in-depth
view into the software, the advanced students were able to download
and practice some new tools they had not previously had in their
SketchUp arsenal, while the beginning students gained enough
knowledge to start experimenting with the software.

LEED® Checklist

inputting the appropriate information for each segment of the checklist.

ASID Colorado
Student of the Quarter

Congratulations to Robin DeRuyter for being selected as our “Student of
the Quarter”.
Robin is very active in ASID Colorado as the Student Affairs Chair, while
also serving as the Programs Chair on Arapahoe Community College’s
(ACC) ASID Student Chapter Board. In addition, she is a member of the
ASID Colorado Program Committee and the 2012 Crystal Award
Committee. Robin is a strong believer in the power of networking. By
being involved in ASID, she has successfully obtained numerous speakers
for her student chapter’s “Lunch & Learns” and has acquired a large
network of industry partners and design professionals, many of whom
have become mentors to her.
Upon graduating this next school year, Robin will pursue her third
career. Previously, she was in the medical insurance field and a licensed
aesthetician. As an aesthetician, she obtained her Micro-Dermabrasion
certificate and has led educational seminars on skin care related topics.
Robin states, “Early on I was drawn to design, as I helped family and
friends decorate their homes. I also designed the product display shelves
for the salon and medical spa I worked at”.
After moving to Colorado three and a half
years ago, she decided to pursue her life
dream of being an interior designer. With
the encouragement of her husband who told
her “you have an opportunity to reinvent
yourself”, she enrolled in the Interior
Design Program at ACC. Robin loves a challenge and is enjoying herself as a student once again.
This fall Robin will be involved in another challenge… her Capstone
project. She plans to follow-up her Capstone with some additional
course work before she graduates from ACC with an Associate’s Degree
in Interior Design.
In working with Robin on several committees, I have learned that she is
an extremely conscientious and dependable worker. Her ability to “get
things done” and her attention to detail is outstanding. While she is
drawn to commercial design, she still enjoys residential and would
consider it a dream to be able to practice both.
