FJORDLAND TE ANAU AND DOUBTFUL SOUND EXPERIENCE 5 DAY / 4 NIGHT TOUR Te Anau Located in the Fjordland National Park, Te Anau is the gateway to the breathtaking Doubtful and Milford Sounds - two of New Zealand's most phenomenal sights. The township is magically set on the shores of the massive glacier-formed Lake Te Anau with the Murchison Mountains and Mount Luxmore creating a beautiful flora adorned backdrop. From Te Anau you can venture out into the wilderness on a guided walking tour, take a tranquil boat ride to the glow worm caves or indulge in a scenic flight across the whole area. Doubtful Sound Sometimes called the 'Sound of Silence' Doubtful Sound is the deepest (421 metres) and second longest (40 kilometres) of the South Island's fiords. It is a powerful place - serene, mysterious and untouched by the modern world. The Fjord was originally named Doubtful Harbour by Captain James Cook, who didn't sail into the inlet because it looked a bit tight for safe maneuvering. It was later named Doubtful Sound by whalers and sealers. The top few meters is fresh water, fed by runoff from the surrounding mountains. Below this is a layer of salt water from the sea. The difference in refractive index between these two layers makes it difficult for light to penetrate. As a result, many deep-sea species - such as black coral - grow in the comparatively shallow depths. Doubtful Sound has some splendid waterfalls, particularly during the wetter seasons. In the Hall Arm, the Browne Falls cascades 619 metres; Helena Falls at Deep Cove tumbles 220 metres. Wildlife is another reason to visit this fiord - keep an eye out for bottlenose dolphins, fur seals and penguins. Then coach across Wilmot Pass on a sub-alpine road through dense rainforest to Deep Cove where your crew and the Fiordland Navigator await. Designed along the lines of a traditional scow, the Fiordland Navigator blends old world charm with modern comforts that include spacious viewing decks, a dining saloon/fully licensed bar and an observation lounge. As you cruise through some of the fiord’s most stunning scenery, our knowledgeable nature guides will provide commentary ensuring you miss nothing, be it the pod of resident dolphins, fur seals or rare penguins you might encounter. After dropping anchor in a sheltered cove, you can choose to explore the shoreline by kayak or tender boat or to simply relax onboard. For the more adventurous (or very brave), there’s even a chance to go swimming! In the evening, enjoy a delicious three course buffet dinner prepared by our onboard chef and served in the dining saloon.
