Erciyes was just breathtaking. There was snow up on the mountains. We were all determined to go and play with it, but only 3 of us got there along with Tea c h e r I s a , Tea c h e r I s a ' s brother Mete and cousin Mehmet Can. The weather was freezing cold right in the middle of summer. When we get down into the city it was again hot. After Erciyes adventure, we left for Urgup-Goreme area where we saw those fascinating geographical features shaped by wind, Fairy Chimneys. The weather there was just the opposite of that of Erciyes. Then we headed towards Denizli where Teacher Isa's uncle was going to meet us. He did so at 02.00 am. We slept at his family house during three days. He was such a nice man. He did everything for our convenience. “In Denizli, there are many exciting activities waiting for us,” said Teacher Isa. F o u r t h d a y, f i r s t i n D e n i z l i though; we woke up to a big breakfast. After the breakfast, we went to a big shopping mall where we played bowling and other fun games, did some shopping and check mobile phone prizes. Well, Turkey seemed a kind of expensive country with very high standards... It was!!! After lunch at a private school, we headed to Pamukkale, The Cotton Castle, another miracle in Turkey. We observed many ancient relics of Roman Empire around Pamukkale. We rode some camels there, had some homem a d e t r a d i t i o n a l Tu r k i s h pancakes, GOZLEME. Then it was time to buy some souvenirs for our parents. That night, we castle, the other trying to conquer... An expensive sport, though. We were all out of energy, so we looked forward to eating our lunch. It wasn't easy because we had to ride the horses in the horse raising farm while Teacher Isa's brother was preparing the barbeque for us. We were all laughing to death when the horse kidnapped Rosa!!! Just like in movies, you should have seen that scene. Fortunately, it wasn't serious. Close to that farm was a place where we could eat real snow with cherry flavour. We were planning to go to one of those huge Aqua Parks in Denizli, but we had to leave that evening, therefore we drove to the airport after getting all our luggages from Teacher Isa's uncle's house and saying 'a million thanks' for all they did for us. On the way to the airport we visited an underground cave, KAKLIK MAGARASI, which looked exactly like Pamukkale. The water was springing from the ground... Well, you can't imagine the smell! Just like spoilt egg, but thousands of the at one place... Anyways, when we got to the airport, Teacher Isa uncle who is an Turkish Airlines personnel was waiting for us. We took some pictures around the aeroplane thanks to Mr. Operator, his nickname we found for him! asked permission to play PSII games. Teacher Isa asked: “Who is the best player among you?” ROSA! Teacher Isa's friend made us a special kind of Turkish food, Maklube. It is mainly rice with beef and potatoes, but the thing is how it was made and how you eat it. The name of the food itself means “turned upside down”. As you can guess from the name, the rice, potatoes and beef are put one layer from each. Then it is cooked and turned upside down on a large tray. It stays exact shape of the pot. Around it, you put some salad and yoghurt. Everyone enjoys the joy of sharing the food from the same tray. We all loved it!!! We wanted to do some more shopping although we were all tired. We went out and bought some fruits and other stuff for our parents. We had that great sweet, the unforgettable Turkish delight, BAKLAVA, too. We went to bed late again! Continued from page 2 Teacher Isa's friend met us with a luxurious van, like all the other vans we travelled throughout the trip. We went to our accommodation which was a very deluxe and comfortable student dormitory. Teacher Isa told us it was one of the best dorms there... You must just see it! It was 11.00 pm. We were all hungry. We couldn't cook in the dorm, so what could we do? Order KEBAPs, of course! We did so! hot and spicy Adana Kebaps, Lahmacuns, Ayrans and so on... We had a deep sleep that night. Next morning, we were invited to Teacher Isa's aunt's house for breakfast. It took us about 2 hours to get there in Istanbul because it is such a big city. But it was really worth as we had a great opportunity to see the Bosphorus from the hills of Beykoz and Anadolu Kavagi. We saw where Marmara Sea and The Black Sea joins. The beautiful scenery with the blue sea, green hills and the seagulls was just indescribable. Later, we visited STV, the most watched T V C h a n n e l i n Tu r k e y. We observed some live studios, we met some presenters and directors of the TV channel. One of the directors was Teacher Isa's friend. He took us to his favourite restaurant on top of the highest hill of Istanbul where you can enjoy the extraordinary view of the city Then we went to MiniaTurk to see the small models of all landscapes around the country. Amazed there, we were even more amazed to see Koc Museum. We saw every kind of transportation, including helicopters, submarines, planes, ships and all types of classic model cars. The owner of the Eighth and ninth days; there were too many things to do in Istanbul. We had to pick only the most important ones. Like Topkapi museum, where we learnt much about Ottoman State, their wealth and power, we watched their military orchestra music before they go to war, etc. We visited the Blue Mosque, such an amazing piece of art and architecture. Later, we had a lot of fun eating BALIK-EKMEK (fish and bread) on the coasts of Bosphorus and watching the seagulls soaring above us. We took a boat tour around the Bosphorus. The feeling of inhaling the air there was just impossible to describe. The next day was our last day in this dream city. We went shopping, played some snooker… Then it was time to return to our dormitory already. Time to pack up! We were all happy and sad! Because we loved it so much and because we just loved it too much! We didn't want to leave. We said to Teacher Isa: “Why don't you lose our passports, so we don't have to go back!” Finally, we were at the airport. We met with all other groups there with Mr. Murat Tutumlu in charge of chaperoning us all the way back to Cambodia. Everyone looked so happy, in high spirit. When I visited the shop, I could understand the reason that people consider Fenerbahce team is a republic. After mentioning about Istanbul, Bursa has come into my mind. We had to travel by ferry in order to reach Bursa. On the ferry, it was very beautiful scenery surrounding us. Bursa was like a very developed province in Turkey. There were a lot of buildings surrounded by many green trees. Continued from page 3 WE LOVE YOU ALL!!! All our teachers were tired and stressed because they did really their best to take good care of us during the holiday. And after all it was all voluntary work; yet they were all successful because we all LOVE Turkey and Turkish people now! Just one example for why we love them: we went to stay in their houses, they even bought gifts to say “thanks for visiting and staying with us”. Well, what else can we say??? A million thanks to Teacher Isa, our administration, our teachers, the voluntary hosts and everyone who participated in this great event. 8/A Students Diamond Mol Heng Sakda Hem Sambath Huot Rosa Mara Reaksmey Kheang *** On the 2nd, July, 2008 I and some other students come from either the same or different classes were getting ready to fly t o Tu r k e y f o r o u r s u m m e r vacation. This was the longest and most memorable vacation I have ever had. This summer vacation was a 10-days trip. When I first arrived in Istanbul, I was very shocked to see high buildings and smooth highways. I used to imagine that Istanbul is a beautiful city and in the jiffy, Istanbul was much more exquisite. I liked Istanbul because there were a lot of friendly people and it was a very cultural place. The first day of our trip, I had some problems with some Turkish dishes. However, I started to get used to it and to love it more and more as I have tasted many types of food. In Istanbul, I visited many shopping places and bought some souvenirs. The place that I like the most is The Fenerbahce Shop and restaurants were everywhere. I visited some amusement parks and experienced cable cars. The food in Bursa was palatable. I not only like the food but also like many kinds of fruits in Turkey. The fruits that I like the most were cherries and berries. They were sweet and tasty. I also had a chance to climb and find the cherries to eat by my own. At night, there were gusts of cold wind blowing all the tiredness from my body. This was the reason that I liked the weather in Turkey a lot. Sometimes I had a chance to go and have meals on a mountain or a hill. With a beautiful weather and well-cooked food, the time was unforgettable. After spending a few days in Bursa, we had to continue our journey to Ankara. Ankara, which is a capital city of Turkey, was very jam-packed. Our bus was stuck in the traffic a few times but it was not a matter because on the bus, I had a lot of fun with friends and teachers. Continued on page 5 1 October 2008 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL NEWSPAPER 5 ABROAD TRIP Continued from page 4 In Ankara, I visited some historical places and I also went to some game shops. Historical places in Ankara were welldesigned. I could not imagine how people could decorate such things. Overall, this summer vacation gave me a lot of fun and experience. With the journey I have completed, I think that Turkey is a very glorious country with wellknown culture. From one place to another, there are different types of food, living styles and traditions. Sereyboth Savoan *** After we arrived at Istanbul, we took a direct flight to Trabzon, another city in Turkey. We spent about 2 hours flying from Istanbul to Trabzon. We were very scared as the plane was landing at Trabzon airport. Looking through the plane windows we could see the water, which is very close to the runway. The planes almost overshot the runway and ran into the sea. hostel. In the evening, we went out again for shopping. After we did our shopping we went to a high hill in the center of the city, to drink Turkish traditional tea, and took a look at the view over the We were very exhausted upon whole city. getting to airport. The guide came. We were very happy when Third day… We caught a bus we saw him. He took us to one again to a lake, which is not very hostel. It was time for dinner. We far from the city. Dinner finished! It was time for sleep. We all slept very well that night, with the low temperature of 15 degrees. We like the temperature at night time very much. Good morning… Second day in Turkey, in Trabzon city. We left the hostel and caught a bus to the mountain. It is the biggest mountain in Trabzon. On the bus we enjoyed the beauty of the view all along the road to the mountain very much, while singing Turkish traditional songs. It took us about 40 minutes to climb to the top of the mountain. There is a very imposing ancient house on the top of the mountain. After we enjoyed the impressive scenery of the tops of the mountains, we came back to the We ate lunch on the bus, along the way back to the city. We had bread with potato and some beef for our lunch. Honestly, we did not enjoy the lunch at that time. When we arrived at the city, we immediately we caught the bus to another city, without having any chance to rest!!!... Bye Bye Trabzon….. After having trip on the bus for one night! we really slept well .Around 7am in the morning we arrived Kayseri .We stopped at the bus station in Kayseri then there was a guy that lives in Kayseri he came to take us for a visit to Kayseri city then he took us to have a breakfast at one of his friend’s house it was a very nice breakfast and relaxing at his house. We prepared to go up through to the snowy mountain! The weather in Kayseri was not too cold and not too hot. We had ridden 2 cars to go to the mountain while we were on the way suddenly one car had a problem cause there was a lot of smoke from the hood so we stopped and checked the problem we found the car was too small and didn’t have enough power to take many people in it, on the way hill! Continued on page 6 1 October 2008 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL NEWSPAPER 6 ABROAD TRIP Continued from page 5 But luckily we could continue during this way there was a lot of pretty place on the street it was so fresh we liked Kayseri so much. At last we arrived the mountain but not on top of the mountain we had to go up by cable car and walking for 1:30 hours while we were on cable car it was very cold maybe 5 or 10 degrees we had to wear a big jacket to keep warm! The hard thing one was we had to walk maybe 4km to touch the snow our classmates were very tired but this thing could not stop us and our feelings we just wanted to touch the snow. Finally we saw the snow and stayed and played snowball there for 1 hour. In the afternoon we did not eat anything so we were so hungry after we finished having a wonderful time on this mountain we came back to city and he took us to the dormitory to eat dinner there. Turkish food was so hard to eat but we also tried to taste some were really nice and wonderful but for some our friend they could not eat. For Kayseri city it was an awesome city it was a quite city and small if we compare to Istanbul and Ankara. We all wanted to say thanks to our home room teacher Mr. Kemal … and say thanks to the guy that took us to visit Kayseri. The day in Kayseri we had finished unlucky we did not sleep well in Kayseri but we hoped to come back and wished to be one more time in Turkey. At 8:00pm we got back to Kayseri bus station to continue to Bolo city… about this amazing city, may I apologize for unknown place name. We went to BOLU after a very happy trip in KAYSERI for a whole day. After spending a night on the bus, we arrived at BOLU in the early morning. The temperature in the bus and outside was completely different. So, there was a surprise for us because there was smoke coming from our mouth when we spoke. We waited for the host to pick us up. After a moment, he came and took us to a place to stay, the hostel. We rested there for 2 hours before the departure to It's time to talk about the 3rd city some resorts. We were very tired now, BOLU. But, before I tell you because as you all know that we couldn't sleep well while on the bus. After the some resting, all of us felt strong again to cruise to resorts. Firstly, we went to a pond that covering by a beautiful atmosphere of trees. We had breakfast there in a cold weather. Cheese, bread, sausages, yoghurt, olives, honey and chocolate were all included in our breakfast. After we finished our breakfast we walked around to get fresh air in the morning and took many photos of course. After we left we went to another resort but this time with manmade pond. We had lunch there w i t h b a r b e q u e . We p l a y e d football with small Turkish kids and we even rode horse too. We had a very good time there. We left there early evening to a school. We visited a school that for young kids. We met the director and teachers, we drank tea together. Then, we played football and volleyball with our friends from the host. By Lymei Sun (9-E) 1 October 2008 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL NEWSPAPER 10 HISTORY THE PCHUM BEN DAY The fifteenth day, of the tenth month, of the Khmer calendar marks the Pchum Ben festival. This is a time when the spirits of the dead ancestors walk the Earth. And the living can ease their suffering by offering them food to eat. At four in the morning, nearly all of the residents of Phnom Penh gather at the temple with offerings of special rice, which they toss on the ground, feeding the dead ancestors. Many of the people throw sticky rice, which, apparently is easier for the spirits to consume. According to Buddhist beliefs, the lives that we live, after death, are predicated by the actions that we took when we were living. Minor infractions would be punished with small punishments, such as being an unattractive ghost or having a small mouth. With a small mouth, it is hard to eat. Other, more severe, punishments could include being crippled or having no mouth at all. At 8:00 AM, people return to the temple, with offerings for the monks. We don't just give food; we bring money and other things as well. As a monk we looked forward to this period all year long, because we could get new clothing and good food. At 10:00 the people return with more food, which will be shared between monks and poor people. Os many of the Buddhist traditions seem to relate to f e e d i n g t h e p o o r. He designed and commissioned the Olympic flag to mark the 20th anniversary of the IOC's founding, on 23rd June 1914 in Paris. Coubertin never said nor wrote that he saw a link between the colors of the rings and the continents. For him, the five rings represented the union of the five continents, but the colors were merely those that appeared in all the different national flags at the time. The security officers who escorted Phelps to his seat were helpless to turn back the cresting wave. In the front row, Phelps's mother, Debbie, switched seats to get out of the way.Phelps, as unflappable as he was while winning eight gold medals, laughed at the commotion. The photographers, reacting to Phelps's expressiveness, pressed even closer. The first days of the rest of Phelps's life as a sports icon have been a trip. It is not unlike a trans-Atlantic flight: tiring, thrilling and a little turbulent. The question-and-answer session included journalists from The Harvard Lampoon, The Hollywood Reporter and a cheeky. Phelps was asked to describe love and weigh in on whether light is a particle or a wave. His answer to both was, “I have no idea.” Phelps, who won six gold medals and two bronzes at the 2004 Athens Olympics, had some idea how big Michael mania is in the United States. Spain continued to look the more threatening side, but there was still the lingering prospect of Germany's refusal to accept defeat yielding an unlikely equaliser. The more air I take in, the easier your brain works and the better you'll understand what I'm telling you. Irrelevant? Not at all Peter! Every organ in your body has relevance to everything, to the entire cosmos. Your brain needs sugar to work, and you need oxygen in order to burn this sugar and provide your neurons with energy. As I happen to be the organ that takes oxygen from the air and helps it to be transferred into your blood, I will tell you about myself. As a matter of fact, talking about oneself is usually a sign of being selfconceited, but my case is rather different; I actually wish to make you reflect on how perfectly I've been created. I am placed inside your chest cavity as two air sacks—or bellow—surrounded by your muscles. I took my first breath right after birth and I still keep working non-stop. Even while you are sleeping, I fulfill my function with the automatic command I receive from the respiratory center at the back of your brain. My close friend Heart started working even before me while you were in the womb. I was resting then; actually I hadn't even formed fully. As all your needs like food and oxygen were met in the body of your mother—whose heart you occasionally break—I didn't have to make extra effort to get air, being filled and emptied. Even if I had attempted to do so, I would have had no chance of succeeding; since you were contained in the amniotic fluid, an attempt to breathe could have caused you to drown. The first breath I take after birth is critical and rather difficult, since the windpipe is still much narrower than normal. On the other hand, the number of my alveoli where oxygen exchange with the capillaries is realized is so high in relation to body size that it balances the situation. When I make my first move and fill with air, I put pressure on the arteries and veins. Then the vessel directly connecting my artery to my mother's aorta is dismissed, the curtain between the valves is closed and the blood circulations are separated. If this curtain is not properly closed and a gap remains in between, the oxygen-rich blood and the used-up blood mix and result in the disease known as cyanosis—or “blue baby” syndrome. As these two kinds of blood mix, the tissues are not supplied with sufficient oxygen and the white parts of the skin and eyes assume a bluish appearance. are asleep, the vibrating cilia of this sweeper work throughout the night and in the morning you get rid of the outcome of their propulsion by clearing your throat. However, every draw of a smoker kills 800–1,000 of our ciliated epithelial cells. After some time, they become unable to sweep the toxins (carbon, sulfur, lead, etc) inhaled with the air. I can't stand it anymore! The increased air pollution is already putting enough strain on us… this habit is just too much for a lung to handle! It is just… an open invitation for cancer! Sorry, Turning blue-purple due to lack of oxygen in the tissues is the s a m e f o r s m o k e r s . C i g arettes—my archenemy—contain hundreds of toxic substances, such as carbon monoxide, which combine with the hemoglobin in blood and prevent oxygen transfer. Therefore, the lips of smokers turn slightly purple. You need to be careful with the air you inhale. The windpipe which brings air into me is covered with a ciliated epithelial tissue which catches the dust brought along and sweeps it outside. While you Peter, I didn't mean to be rude. I appreciate that you don't smoke, but I wish those who do would realize how splendid a mechanism they are destroying. Now let me tell you about what a work of art I am. As you also know, art in a structure becomes more meaningful with functionality. As is the case with my other friends with which I work in your body, I am perfectly made to fulfill my duty. In other words, never mind forming an organ like me as a consequence of molecules and cells accidentally coming together, even a single protein molecule in my structure does not come to existence through unconscious causes. With every breath you take, the pressure of the oxygen within the air inhaled rises, so it passes through my membranes by diffusion and into the adjacent capillaries; there it combines with hemoglobin molecules. At the same time, the carbon dioxide passes through the same membranes into me, and I dispose of it. Both of these are easier said than done! You breathe 13–14 times a minute and the whole thing is repeated o v e r a n d o v e r. A s I k e e p expanding and contracting during breathing, which you are unaware of most of the time; first of all I need to be very flexible. Together with this flexibility, my most important quality is having the largest possible surface area within the smallest volume. My surface area of around 100m2 (as large as a tennis court) is made to fit into your chest cavity in the form of thin membranes so that my large surface allows gas diffusion. Continued on page 16 1 October 2008 ZAMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL NEWSPAPER 16 HEALTH Continued from page 15 These membranes need to be kept wet; a special fluid is secreted as a precaution and respiration is realized smoothly. Without this fluid, my membranes would just stick together, unable to carry out their duty. You can compare the course of the air inhaled to that of a car passing from a highway onto increasingly smaller roads and in the end reaching a dead end in the small sacks named alveoli. The air coming in through the mouth and nose unites at the expressway named the trachea, or the windpipe, which is 15cm long and 2–3cm in diameter. Incidentally, I have a couple of things to tell you about the way you breathe. As a matter of fact, inhaling is the duty of the nose. I'm sure it also has a lot to say as well, but let me just mention a simple fact about it. Now, you should inhale through your nose, so that the air you take in gets warm, wet, and is cleaned from dust. If you try to breathe this way, you do not trouble me much, and reduce the risk of catching a cold or an infection of upper respiratory system. Inhaling through the mouth helps dust and germs get into me and you might contract various illnesses from bronchitis to pneumonia. Now you know why kids who have adenoids who sleep with their mouth open get ill so easily. Sorry, I couldn't help speaking on behalf on the nose. Well, what were we talking about before that? Oh yes! The ways through which the inhaled air passes. As the name suggests, the windpipe which makes the air reach me is a cylindrical tube surrounded by 16–20 cartilaginous rings. As it is placed beside the esophagus, one side of the rings is made of soft cartilaginous tissue instead of hard, so that they don't hinder swallowing. The muscular tissue near these rings helps them widen and narrow during respiration or coughing. I sometimes warn you by making you cough. Maybe it seems to be a disturbance, but if I don't push out air by coughing through the contracted windpipe, contaminants can clog me up and cause you to suffocate. Therefore, the burst of air—what you call a cough—is a great blessing to you. The sound system at the tip of the windpipe is another wonder. The used air I send out vibrates the cords in that voice-box and produces such melodies, gives voice to such speech! The air divides into the two lungs. My two sides are not symmetrical; the one on the right is divided into three, and the one on the left into two. I think this was meant to make room for the neighbor on the left, the heart. In addition, if there's any cancer growth in me, the diseased part can be taken out by an operation and I can keep on functioning. God knows the wisdom behind this form. After that, these main bronchi separate into 8–10 thinner branches, like highways connecting to narrower roads. This branching resembles a tree turned upside down. At the tips of these thin branches are the respiratory bronchioles resembling clusters of grapes. The small spheres which make up the cluster are the end of the road and are the most vital parts. These spheres named alveoli are made of very thin membrane and they are surrounded by a net GROUP A of capillaries. 1st Match Scores: These are the functional spots where gas exchange is realized. 12-B (2-1) 11-A I hang in the thorax with veins 11-B (2-6) 12-A and arteries all around.
