K Rend Silicone TC 15 is a ready to use organic resin render which is applied to provide a low maintenance textured finish. It is designed for use on external wall insulating render systems. So what is the BBA and why is it important? The BBA is the UK’s major authority offering approval and certification services to building control, government manufacturers and installers supplying the construction industry. It is recognised by departments, architects, local authorities, specifiers, and industry insurers like the National House Building Control NHBC. BBA Certificates have been providing authoritative and independent information on the performance of building products for over 35 years. Every BBA Certificate contains important data on durability, installation and compliance with Building Regulations throughout the UK. A BBA Certificate is only awarded to a construction product or system after it has successfully passed a comprehensive assessment involving; laboratory testing, on-site evaluations and inspections of production. The manufacturer will also be audited ensuring that a suitable quality management system is in place. To view our BBA Certificate for K Rend Silicone TC 15 click here. Due to the increased demand for our TC product range we have invested in a second mixing system for the colouring process. The second mixer is now installed and commissioned. This machine adds more capacity and will reduce colouring and mixing time resulting in improved customer service. The Thin Coat wet plant where the new mixer has been installed to meet demand 5 K Products K Rend... on TV! K Rend have recently made another appearance on Sarah Beeny’s popular channel 4 series ‘Double Your House for Half the Money’. This episode was based in Cheshire, where Becky and Mark Ridley wanted to add a large extension to their 200-year-old cottage and give the property a modern makeover while retaining much of its original charm. The property was extended on both side elevations, with a full refurbishment, not to mention a well being discovered under the property! The render finish of choice was K Rend Silicone FT White, a self-coloured render, which was hand applied. The property known as the ‘white house’ was completed 20 weeks early. “We have achieved what we set out to do in record time, just six months,” says Mark. “Our dream home is almost double its original size and we have achieved this for half the money it would have cost us to purchase it finished and complete – something we couldn’t have afforded.” Below are images taken during & after filming of Ch4’s hit tv show. 6 K Products K Rend Support DIY SOS: ‘The Million Pound Build’ for BBC Children in Need The DIY SOS team & some of the contractors who volunteered for the Little Miracles charity, Peterborough K Rend were proud to lend their support for the recent ‘Million Pound Build’ with DIY SOS & BBC Children in Need. When the BBC contacted us to supply free of charge material to the recent ‘BBC Children in Need Million Pound Build’ with DIY SOS we had no hesitation. The build was for the Little Miracles charity, Peterborough & was estimated to cost £1 million to complete in nine months took just nine days. With a tiny budget of a few thousand pounds, the team knocked down the concrete shed that previously had no facilities or disabled access and recreated a brand new, 250 square metre state of the art new facility, with two acres of fully landscaped, wheelchair accessible woodland complete with adventure trails and play areas. K Rend FT white was supplied through one of our merchants: Minster, Didcot. So why Little Miracles? Three and a half years ago, a lady called Michelle was refused access to the last bus home with her disabled children because one was on oxygen and the canister was considered too dangerous to be on board. After sitting on the bus in tears, refusing to get off, a woman next to her said “it will be alright.” That one moment of kindness from a stranger made Michelle determined that other parents should have some support, so she decided to set up a support group for parents of children with disabilities and life limiting illnesses, offering advice, counseling and respite. Three and a half years on, she now looks after over 800 families who simply have nowhere else to go. The volunteers in the construction industry knew this, as did the army of gardeners, landscapers, technicians and Army personnel, who made it happen. The Million Pound Build site in progress 7 K Products K Rend... on the big screen! Testimonials Kyle Watt, Rendering Solutions, South East England “Accelerator is a great product to use, the render dries much quicker, so I find it ideal for the colder weather.” “I have been involved in site trails for K1 Spray and found it very light and easy to spray, rule and level off. It’s a good product all round, great to work with and scraping down was also easy. After the trails I have continued using K1 Spray, in fact I’m due to start a new job with it on a block of flats next week.” 8 K Products Bedding Lime Season Is Here! As every farmer knows, the longer periods of wetter weather are here to stay. Regular use of bedding lime is therefore an important part of winter routine. When added daily to the cubicle beds; bedding lime, provides comfort for the livestock, absorbs moisture and reduces the potential for bacteria build up in the process. Our Range MasterCAL bedding lime is a unique product specifically designed for use as bedding material in livestock stalls. A ready made blend of hydrated and high purity calcium lime; it optimises the benefits of both minerals. The end result is comfort for livestock in a blend that provides high levels of bacteria control, whilst minimising the risk of inflammation or burns that may be a problem with other treatments. CubiCAL, another bedding lime product within our range, is comprised of 100% high purity limestone granules. As stall waste can be spread on croplands, CubiCAL has additional value as a source of aglime. 9 K Products K Rend jobs... Listed below are some recent K Rend jobs. We achieved Quintile One status in the Business in the Community’s ARENA Environmental Benchmarking Survey. The ARENA Survey is Northern Ireland’s only benchmark for environmental management, performance and reporting. This year almost 300 organisations from 15 different sectors were invited to take part, including the top 200 companies and leading public sector organisations. Now in its 15th year, the Survey is a key driver for corporate environmental improvement and is seen as a positive influencer to help organisations achieve a more sustainable way of doing business. Benchmarking enables organisations to compare their performance and learn from what others are doing. As this period of economic uncertainty continues, organisations can look to making environmental efficiencies as a way to improve the environment, contribute to a sustainable future and make tangible cost savings. The ARENA Network Chair, David Gavaghan commented: “The Survey is a key driver to ensure environmental issues are on the agenda of organisations across Northern Ireland and beyond. Year-onyear, the results give us tangible evidence that environmental measurement is amongst the top issues that corporates are managing.” The Northern Ireland 15th Environmental Benchmarking Survey results are now available to download at, www.bitc.org.uk 14 Exhibitions Borderway Agri-Expo, Carlisle 1st Nov Borderway Agri-Expo, held at Carlisle, attracts livestock from across the UK, this year the show with around 12500 spectators had more trade stands than ever. If you know anyone in the photos or have any more information on them please get in touch with us: [email protected] 19 K News History at Kilwaughter Lime We regularly invite archaeologists onsite for monitoring purposes. Aside from the odd bits of flint, from time to time they find something of interest for excavation. Recently a large circle feature was excavated, the surface of which contained burnt bone, larger pieces of charcoal and sherds of prehistoric pottery commonly associated with a cremation burial. Often during our educational school visits the pupils are astounded by the history surrounding our limestone quarry. Learning about the local site and how some fossils date as far as 65 million – 135 million years ago. When believe it or not, our site was a tropical sea bed with an estimated temperature of 40 degrees, certainly not the Northern Irish climate we are used to nowadays! Southeast quadrant of the capping material removed, revealing the layer of burning below. If you require further information on archaeological findings please don’t hesitate to contact us. Cremation burial pre-excavation Community NFU Mutual tap into Kilwaughter’s experience 20 Kilwaughter’s Managing Director Simon McDowell was recently invited to a local farming meeting, hosted by NFU Mutual, to present on Kilwaughter products and how they assist the agricultural industry. Opportunities to talk directly to our customers are invaluable and it is excellent to be recognised as a valuable source of knowledge for the industry. K Features A Titanic Face! 25 tonnes of limestone, 2,000 tonnes of soil, 2,000 tonnes of sand, 11 acres and 1 huge team effort combine to create ‘Wish’, the largest land-art portrait in the UK and Ireland. ‘Wish’, Rodriguez-Gerada’s portrait of an anonymous local child gazing towards the future, represents a new face for Belfast on the old face of the city. The face at Titanic Quarter used Kilwaughter lime for the eyes Situated in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter, the portrait spans 11 acres and is comprised of materials sourced solely from the land. Many local firms did their bit to provide, tools, machinery, material & labour. Kilwaughter contributed over 25 tonne of limestone for the child’s eyes. This is one of the many unusual requests Kilwaughter have encountered over the years. Artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada has produced similar pieces all over the world but is especially connected to his latest and largest project in Belfast, “I have created work in the States and all over Europe but this piece in Belfast has been a different experience for me. The people have been overwhelming in their support and belief in the concept. When I first started on this work it was only five acres but it grew both emotionally and physically. Now, at 11 acres, it is my largest piece.” Extraordinary artist set to work with K Rend London based artist Alex Chinneck has been known to create much of a media storm in the past. Presenting twists on everyday objects and situations with his highly inventive use of materials and processes, Alex Chinneck’s work progresses on an ever-increasing scale, both in the gallery and in public space. For his next project Alex has chosen K Rends Silicone Thin Coat, Pearl and HP14. The impressive nature of Alex’s past projects leaves us eagerly anticipating news on the final piece. Recent projects are pictured below including a project in Margate where the facade of a house appears to be slipping so severely that the bricks are bowing in unison, and an arching 6.5 foot chimney that cyclically pumps smoke. More of Alex’s artwork can be viewed at www.alexchinneck.com K People Kilwaughter Engage For Success...
