The Festival
The idea of organizing an international music festival
came to be during a meeting with French producer, Loic
Ysnel from Groove Production and Chico Bueno, the
owner of the Farm Porto Velho in Buzios. Both of them
are passionate about music. During such unexpected
meeting, from a interpersonal and also musical stand a
fundamental question with an ecological background
inevitably surfaces for this artistic project: ”If destiny
brought together man and music at the Porto Velho farm
does that mean that nature has any role to play in such a
delightful coincidence?”
Porto Velho farm is located in the largest redwood
plantation area in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Due to such
proximity the area is filled with magic, whereby the creation of a new natural space where the
reforesting of this type of tree is rendered feasible. Porto Velho Farm will be able to take
responsibility for the preservation and reforesting of redwood in the Buzios region.
In a few words: redwood is considered to be Brazil’s mythic tree and it was also on of the first types
of trees in large quantities discovered by the Portuguese when they arrived in Brazil. Its name is
what gave origin to this country’s name. Redwood was the first type of wood to be commercialized
since the early stages of the colonization. Due to years of over exploitation, that is, during a period
called ‘the Redwood cycle’ the species nearly disappeared.
What is the concept? The organization of the first international music festival ever which is a
defender of an ecological cause that is so fundamental for Buzios. The inspiration comes from
French festivals known for divulging an ecletic programme which is aimed at a mixed crowd and
for developing actions with an ecological background.
Loic Ysnel is experienced in music production and a great observer of the current festivals in
France. He notices similarities between the party culture in Brazil and France, which is what led
him into getting engaged in this project for a festival inspired in the French manifestations. The
festival ‘Les Vieilles Charrues’ is an example worthy of mentioning. It is considered the greatest
French music festival which hosts nearly 350.000 in Carhaix (Britanny) and it takes place every
summer. This gathering encompasses all types of audience and its popularity is owed to an ecletic
programme open to regional, national and international artists. The festival ‘du Bout du monde’ in
another example to be mentioned since it was a huge success in the French style. The organization
was flawless and (the festival) took place in an unusual place with difficult access, hence the name
‘festival at the far end of the world’.
Loic Ysnel drafted and produced shows with internationally renowned artists during the first twelve
years of the famous festival ‘Les Voix du Gaou’. He contributed for the development of this festival
which was once one of the most important French festivals. Located in the Gaou Peninsula
(southeast France), the area is certainly one of the most beautiful places on the mediterranean coast.
He has great experience in the production of shows in France and other European and African
countries of such artists like – James Brown, Ray Charles, Barbara Hendricks, Joe Cocker, Kool &
the Gang, Earth Wind & Fire, Roy Ayers, Jimmy Cliff, Alpha Blondy, Ziggy Marley, Groundation,
Steel Pulse, Donna Summer, The Blues Brothers band, George Clinton, Isaac Hayes, Sly & Family
Stone, America and many others more from the new generation. Therefore, who else other than
Groove Production, which will be 20 years in 2012?

The preservation of the redwood: the festival’s ecologic soul.
This ecological pondering with come to be the festival’s soul and the goal will be to link art and
eco-citizenship through concerts, animation and activities aimed at preserving the redwood in the
Buzios region, prioritizing the reforesting of this tree in the Porto Velho Farm. The main focus of
the festival is to raise awareness of this topic amongst the population and also to turn itself into a
showcase and space for communication and sensitization of such an important ecological cause,
which is the preservation of the redwood in Buzios.
The mobilization of the festival in favour of this cause will have as main goals:
•
sensitize the artists and the audience
•
Drum up funds for an NGO from the festival’s proceedings, which would coordinate the
redwood reforesting programme in the farm land
•
Inform the youngsters and make them aware that they are part of the decisions and get them
into engaging in the long run in preserving the redwood for the future
•
Contribute for the future and the preservation of the region’s ecosystem and the
improvement of life quality in the region. That can be achieved when we can strike an
ecological balance, which will ultimately take place through the reforesting of redwood
•
Enable a long-lasting manifestation aimed at giving origin to an event which is essential to a
sustainable environment and the preservation of nature
•
Insure the promotion of ecology through artists who are engaged in the protection of the
environment during the concerts, support direct action projects like garbage collection and
various interventions in schools
Bearing in mind all ecological goals in this festival project Loic Ysnel, producer of concerts and
artists internationally renowed, will try and recreate the format of the French festivals in this
unusual place which is the Porto Velho Farm.

Professional aspects of the festival
The first edition of the festival is envisaged for a weekend in November 2012, which will take place
on the bank holiday of November 15. The bank holiday will be on a Thursday, which means the
festival could take place on November 15, 16 and 17 of 2012 (2 or 3 days according to the
estimates) whereby one of the goals is to host 20.000 people per day, local capacity.
The aim is to respect the rules and involve the Brazilian professionals in the production, both in PR
and in the raising of private funds through the Rouanet Law. The other goals is to engage local
partners.
In this event, exceptionally (something which did not happen with other events in the Porto Velho
Farm), the magnificent house with an area of 300 m2 will host all artists and VIPs. The exterior area
will also host the VIP guests as well as all the partners and there is a possibility of organising the
presence of the artists on different stages (see picture)
The main stage will be located right in front of a row of palm trees (picture below) whereby on the
background a magnificent sunset can be seen…
Another goal for this event will be to offer an eclectic programme with all sorts of music:
funk, pop-rock, world music, jazz and a vast repertoire of English and US music. This festival
will bring together all kinds of audience, generations and festive themes.

Redwood
The tree had its name due to its reddish colour, like fire, where an
ink was extracted to use in the colouring of tissues. The redwood
tree is native of the states of Bahia, Espirito Santo, Pernambuco
and Rio de Janeiro and this wood is hard with an elevated density
level, which makes it very resistant. Still today it is used in the
manufacturing of violin arches.
The reforesting of redwood
Thanks to a degree of awareness amongst the population, during the last years the reforesting of
redwood has been carried out, especially because of a relevant work done by organisations dealing
with ecology, lectures in schools and campaigns. The species no longer risks becoming extinct.
Reforesting redwood is a challenge and a fundamental ecological question and it must be taken into
consideration during the creation of this festival in Buzios since the region is host to the vastest
reserve of such tree in the state of Rio de Janeiro. There, projects designed for the preservation have
been taking place, just like APA.
Redwood APA in Buzios
It spreads out in an area of 9.940 hectares and encompasses the
continental, insular and maritime parts. It is located in the Regiao
dos Lagos area in the state of Rio de Janeiro in a territory located
between Tucuns Beach in Buzios and Itajuru Canal in Cabo Frio.
This area must be protected against constant aggression from men,
such as real estate speculation, predatory tourism, the spread of
slums and small kiosks around that area. The protection of the Serra das Emerencias, the Pero
Dunes and the islands is fundamental for the preservation of the Atlantic Rain Forest.
Inside the APA area there is an area of 12.000 sq metres which the Jardim Botanico team in Rio de
Janeiro carry out researches. The protected area is one of the 14 areas in Brazil considered rich in
endemic vegetation and a hub for plants diversity. Two out of the fourteen areas are located in the
state of Rio de Janeiro: the Mata Atlantica (rain forest) and the coast of Cabo Frio and Buzios, all
under APA’s protection. The presence of redwood, archaeological sites and the low rain index make
the region special in ecological terms, something which turns the Serra das Emerencias into one of
the best places for eco tourism in Buzios.
