Thank you. Thank you for sharing your treasure with our parish! Page 3 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God." What have we left behind? What have we traded in to become faithful followers of Christ? The answer is different for all of us. Some of us can tell the tale of a dramatic conversion story, leaving behind a life of blatantly selfish indulgence or obviously sinful behavior in order to embrace the call of Jesus. Others of us have been Christians since the day of our baptism as infants and have always walked the path of belief, but perhaps can trace certain moments when we embraced a deeper commitment and resolved to abandon particular behaviors, relationships, or worldly priorities that were in conflict with our faith. Whatever the case, Jesus instructs us today not to look to "what was left behind." Instead, we are called to keep our focus on what lies ahead, namely, life in Christ and the ultimate hope of union with him in heaven. Keeping this focus can be quite a challenge. So often, it's tempting to think that the grass is greener somewhere else. As Christians, we can fall into the trap of imagining that it might feel better to be ... something else. Perhaps, seeing others around us whose lives are not shaped by their faith, we might think they have it easier than we do. Or perhaps we get lost in reminiscence about the way things were in the good old days, and thus get distracted from the mission that stands in front of us today. But thoughts like these are not fit for our new life as a disciple of Christ. As St. Paul says in today's epistle, "For freedom Christ set us free." May we embrace the gift of this true freedom and follow Christ without looking back. c lease pray for the sick of our parish... Page 4 The Pastor’s Page DO NOT BECOME A SLAVE TO SIN For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. (Gal 5:1) People do all sorts of funny things in this life. Many of the things that they do ensnare them. We form all sorts of habits: some good, some bad. Our humanity has the propensity to form bad habits and lock us in to them. HIS FINAL WEEKEND On Fr. Ted Mauch’s final weekend at St. Thomas More, we take this opportunity to wish him well in his new assignment as Administrator of St. Joseph Church in Dyer. We thank him for his faithful service these past couple of years and assure him that he will remain in our hearts and in our prayers. God bless you on your new assignment, Fr. Ted. May God go with you and bring success to the work of your hands! Our bad habits lead us to further ruin. Jesus can help us break that cycle. He brings victory over sin. We, for our part, need to accept His help so that we can break away from the things that ensnare us. Do not be a slave to sin. Accept the victory won for us from Christ and live as His people! FAITH ACTION: Pray for those who have allowed themselves to become enslaved to sin so that they might have the grace and courage to return to the Lord. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ INFORMATION SESSIONS — YOU’RE INVITED There are many things happening in and planned for the Diocese of Gary and Bishop Hying wants to make himself available to explain some of those hopes and plans. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE The priest was shaking everyone’s hand while they were leaving the church. An elderly gentleman said “Father, that was the worst sermon I’ve ever listened to. It was terrible. I’ve never heard anything more boring.” The priest was speechless. The gentleman’s wife, wanting to be helpful, said, “Father, please don't listen to him. He doesn’t really know what he’s talking about. Actually, he only repeats what he hears other people saying.” Monday, July 11: St. Paul, Valparaiso Tuesday, July 12: Our Lady of Consolation, Merrillville Wednesday, July 13: Holy Angels Cathedral, Gary Thursday, July 14: Sacred Heart, LaPorte PLEASE REMEMBER THEM Please pray for the priests and deacons who have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully and whose anniversaries of death are this week: June 27: Rev. Wanda had her first child at 18 and dropped out of school. She thought selling drugs would help, but she was arrested. Suddenly she had no income, no diploma, and a felony on her record. She decided to set things right and contacted Catholic Charities, which has helped Wanda to secure a part-time job, work toward finishing her education and even get her felony expunged. Wanda believes God has her on a “new journey,” and she intends to stay on it. To learn more, visit www.CatholicCharitiesUSA.org.
