Your Committee
At last, a nice hot sunny day to
enjoy the Alpine. And what am I
doing? Working on the windscreen
wipers. I went to the Hants meet on
Sunday and it was one of those rare
occasions when I’ve needed to use
the Alpine in the rain. Not that I’m
precious about it, I hasten to add,
just that it’s no fun with the roof up.
Anyway, I became frustrated with
the lack of an intermittent wiper, so
I decided to see if I could modify it
and spent a day borrowing the electrical skills of a good friend to see what we
could achieve. The results are mixed; I now have an intermittent stage, but on
a separate switch. I’ll probably do a full write up in due course, but I’m slightly
nervous that someone will write in telling me a much simpler way of doing it.
Anyway, I’m hoping that now I’ve gone to all this trouble, it won’t rain all summer.
We have planned our itinerary for the weekend of the National, stopping off
with friends in Exeter on the Thursday night, moving onto somewhere near
Dartmouth on Friday and then Cornwall on the Saturday. I had no idea it was so
difficult to get a room in Dartmouth for just one night. The only thing I need to
do now is actually get my tickets for the National, and hope that I won’t need to
use my wipers, intermittent or otherwise.
I was really tempted by the SROC event at Blenheim Palace (Letters, page 11) at
the end of July, but I have a previous commitment. It sounds like it’ll be a good
weekend though.
There’s plenty to enjoy in this edition, especially Russell Hadfield’s article
“Modern is not always best”. We enjoy a great level of spares availabilty for our
cars which I for one sometimes take for granted.
Deadline for the next issue is July 20th. Sorry this one’s a bit late, my computer
broke down then I went on holiday!
Enjoy the summer, I look forward to meeting many of you at the National.

Modern is not always best
On closer inspection, whilst the body was in excellent condition, the suspension needed a
complete makeover, and over the next few months I worked on that and the underside of
the car in general. Following this it passed it’s MOT with flying colours.
When driving the car in traffic, it turned out to be a pig, because it had a massive missing
point between 2-3000 revs where it spluttered a bit, then shot off like the wind. The only
trouble was, by this time the car in front was braking again.
I decided to bite the bullet and found the guy who had carried out the initial conversion.
He suggested that it was changed to fuel injection using all the bits he had taken off a
Mondeo when he got the original engine.
This went ahead and with the exchange of
some cash plus the Weber carbs, I came
away with a very neat fuel injection job.
My story starts about 2 years ago. Having been made redundant after 28 years in the job
and finding another job reasonably quickly, my wife gave me the opportunity to buy a
classic car.
It was soon after this that the car started
to have poor idling from time to time, and
started to spew out black smoke. I then
started a very painfully slow investigation
of why this was happening, manfully
aided by an excellent mechanic (my next
door neighbour Rick). We spent many
hours checking and rechecking every
single wire linked to the ECU and all its
sensors dotted around the engine bay.
This was only possible because Rick
could get his hands on some really
specialised gizmos that would help us
trace the fault. The initial diagnosis was
the ECU. Mmmm this sounds expensive,
let’s test it again. The second diagnosis
pointed also to the ECU.
Having been an avid reader of Practical Classics for several years, my choice was down
to 2, a Volvo P1800 (The Saint car) or a Sunbeam Alpine. I was taking this route because
I wanted something different, and every man and his dog had an MG.
My wife again provided the main lead that ended up in me being the proud owner of a
classic. Her hairdresser’s husband had a Sunbeam Alpine with a new engine for sale. That
was all I knew. When going to view the car, imagine my surprise when the bonnet was
opened and there sat a Zetec 1.8 engine, kitted out with racing cams and twin 40 DCOE
Webers. It went like stink!!
Gulp!! The ECU it is then. We struggled
to source another ECU from a scrappie,
so it was at this point that I was inspired,
probably by the thought of emptying my
wallet and purchasing a new ECU.
I thought to myself “now that is different” and bought it
Now I know some of you staunch Classic car owners will be cringing at this point, that a
car such as the Sunbeam Alpine could have its heart ripped out and a modern lump put in
as a replacement, but I think you will be smiling later.
The car is a Series V, and an American import, backed up by the fact that a cent coin was
found in one of the vents and what I presume is an American equivalent of a Green Shield
stamp (do you remember those?) in the cockpit.

My work colleagues Dad worked at a main Ford Dealer, and I asked him to price up a new
ECU, but also check the part code of the one installed. A day or so later my colleague said
“Do you want the good news or the bad”
“The bad news is that a new one is £450 + VAT, the good news is that you have got the
wrong one” Apparently, the part codes on the ECU only differ by the last two letters. If it

starts with an “A” it’s for a 1600cc and a “B” for an 1800cc. Mine had the letters “AC”
therefore was for a 1600cc. Eureka!! We had found the problem. Then we found the right
ECU in a scrappie for £10, life was now becoming bearable.
All was OK for a few months albeit the car was not used a great deal. I decided to go to
work in it for a few days some weeks back, and on the second day, approaching home,
it started to splutter and was reluctant to pick up. My initial thoughts were fuel, was it
running out of petrol and the gauge reading incorrectly or a fuel pump problem?
I managed to get it to limp home and put it in the garage rather disgustedly. The following
evening I plucked up the courage and decided to give it a quick “look-see”.
It wasn’t long before I realised that the cam belt was loose. On investigation the timing
has slipped by one tooth on one of the cams. To this day I am not sure what caused this.
It is assumed that the cam belt tensioner may have partially seized when hot and slipped.
Anyway, I was lucky, and a new cam belt along with tensioner and pulleys sorted it out.
About a week later my wife decided she wanted to go out in the Sunbeam and we called in
a local garage for petrol. All was going swimmingly until I tried to start the car up again.
It just didn’t want to know - knackered battery. Fortunately a guy with a Merc gave us a
jump start and we got home. A new battery was promptly fitted, and we were on the road
again.
You would think that, by now, we would be turning the corner, and reliability would start
to kick in.
We then found ourselves in a situation where my wife’s car needed to go in for some body
work, so one Saturday morning I dumped the car off for her and took my day car (an Audi
80) for it’s MOT. It failed on
a suspension bush. The garage
could do it on the Tuesday, so it
was booked in.
No problem, we’ve still got
the Alpine, so I would take the
Alpine to work, and my wife
would have the Audi, and get
picked up by a colleague on the
Tuesday having dumped it off at
the garage. How wrong could I
be!!. The brakes seized on the
Alpine going to work, and was
subsequently attached to a tow
truck and taken home.

June 2005
Tuesday came and we were now without every single car we own. Anyway we got through
that week, the Alpine brakes were rebuilt using new caliper pistons and rubber seal kits,
and is back on the road again.
My outstanding jobs are 1) to get the windscreen reset so that the chrome quarterlight on
the passenger door does not clout the actual windscreen frame when closing, and I have
had several snippets of information from the members of the “Horn” family on how to do
this, and 2) to stop oil leaking from the gearbox, via the speedo cable into the car cockpit.
This latter point brings me back to the title “Modern is not always best”. The problem
with the speedo cable is that the worm/gearing mechanism, which the speedo cable clicks
into, is leaking oil through the central shaft and not via the outer oil seal. This oil is then
running up the speedo cable and dripping into the car
Now I can buy parts for a 1967 Series V Alpine from at least 5 places that I know of, but
most of the parts I need for this job are obsolete via Ford, and we are talking of a late
1980’s early1990’s type 9 gearbox. So my latest challenge is to source the parts
It is fun though when visiting these Ford Parts companies because when they ask for the
Year/Model of the car you can reply a 1967 Series V Sunbeam Alpine. Their faces are a
picture.
I’m still trying to build up my confidence levels with the car, but it puts a smile on my
face every time I get into it. My daughter is getting married next year, and the Alpine is
to be the Wedding car, so my target is to get mechanicals sorted, and most of the general
upgrading of the car done by then.

666 YMK RIDES AGAIN (soon)
taken apart. It will be repaired soon.
In February 1984 issue of the Horn I wrote about the Surfacing of 666 YMK.
In late 1999 I found a new enthusiasm for my old girl. I tracked down a local bodyshop,
whose owner is an old car enthusiast, and who was really interested in restoring her
to her former glory, and was also prepared to keep the cost down if I was in no hurry,
and did a lot of the preparation work . By May 2000 the car had been stripped of just
about everything that was removable. He sent a transporter to collect the shell and she
trundled off into he distance. During the following months I visited her many times, and
gradually a transformation took place. Ten months later, in March 2001 the body shell
came back from the bodyshop all sparkling new paint and with lots of new metalwork
In May 2005 I’m writing about 666 RIDES AGAIN.
After the first restoration, I had several years fantastic motoring. I rallied with it all over
England, and even into Wales, attended a few Nationals, and actually won a prize at one
of them.
All was going well with only a few intermittent strange noises emanating from under the
bonnet until, when the returning from a rally, I was about two miles from home when
BANG!! She coasted to a standstill and stopped. As we were so close to home it was
simply a matter of returning with the everyday car and towing her home. The engine was
removed, and further investigation revealed that a shim had moved on the big end and
caused it to blow. That was in 1987. The engine is still sitting on the bench where it was

the previous thirteen years.
Letters
Dear John,
plans!!
Her homecoming was a day of celebration.
The transporter returned with my pride and
joy sitting proudly on board. The garage
had been cleared out ready for its newly
decorated occupant. She was jacked up on
high axle stands and I had every intention of
getting her on the road by the end of the year
or at the very latest the beginning of 2002.
Oh how we dream!! Family life doesn’t like
So there she sat. I bought her a couple of soft sheets to shield her from the dust and dirt
blown into the garage through its numerous “ventilation” holes. I did spend several nights
with at first lying on my back under the car cleaning off old muck and preparing her for
new underseal, but family matters took priority, and what with lack of time due to a new
job, the old girl was put on hold again. The second half of 2002 passed, 2003 came and
went, as did 2004.
Now we’re in 2005. Work has started again. The underseal has been completed, the
wiring loom is in, and other bits and pieces are gradually being added to the engine bay.
I can’t see it being finished for this year’s National, but who knows, hopefully it will make
re-appearance at Bristol in 2006. Watch this space.

Rapier 50th Birthday Rally, Blenheim
Palace, 30-31 July. I’m writing to invite
all your club members to join us at our
Sunbeam Rapier OC National Rally
this year. We are celebrating the 50th
birthday of the Rapier and the whole
family of Rootes models associated
with it - Minx, Gazelle, Alpine, Husky
and Commer Cob. The Rally is at
Blenheim Palace, venue for some of
the best Rootes gatherings we’ve ever
seen; dates are Saturday / Sunday July
30/31st.
We hope to have a really good turnout from all the Rootes clubs to join
us; with the ever-increasing cost of
staging events at prestige venues
like this, it may well be the last such
gathering the SROC organises, so
make the most of it!
Blenheim is a World Heritage site, the
birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. In
Woodstock, Oxfordshire, it’s about
as central England as stately homes
get. The grounds are stunningly
beautiful, the Palace itself is a
treasure house and our Rally site is
right alongside the main drive into
the Palace. If you want a preview see
www.blenheimpalace.com.
Camping/caravanning will be arranged
in the Blenheim estate although it
won’t be directly adjacent to the Rally
site. There are plenty of places to stay
locally, from humble B & B to smart
hotels: the local Tourist Information

can provide details (01993 813276,
[email protected] or, if
you prefer on-line booking,
www.oxfordshirecotswolds.org).
Special attractions? You bet! On
Saturday evening, our entertainment is
taken care of in style, with a spectacular
fireworks concert, organised by Battle
Proms. Refreshments for the evening
will be available from the Blenheim
Palace catering outlets. Sunday will
follow our customary pattern of arena
displays and informal concours, but
with added attractions; along with
displays from other clubs with special
anniversaries this year, we are hoping
to have a flying display. This and other
details of the programme are still being
finalised.
And the cost? Some hard bargaining
with the Blenheim Palace Events
team means we benefit from a heavily
discounted admission charge. We
have been able to keep other expenses
down, so it’s entry to Blenheim that
makes up the main part of the cost.
The costs are (per person, not per
car):
One day only:
£6 adults / £5 OAPs / £3 children;
Two days:
£10 adults / £5 OAPs / £5 children.
We will collect money on the gate
as usual; no advance booking is
required.

But as you decide whether or not you
can make it to Blenheim this summer,
do bear in mind that this really may be
your last chance to experience this sort
of large - scale event run by a single
club. So let’s have a bumper turn - out;
come along and make it a 50th Rapier
birthday Rally to remember!
Yours sincerely,
Hello John,
Tim Sutton
Chairman, SROC
You are doing an excellent job of editing
the Alpine Horn, you have an excellent
and witty style (thank you, fiver in post
as agreed - Ed).
In answer to Russell Hadfield’s letter, if
I remember correctly you do not shim
the windscreen but adjust the door
quarter lights and the window winder
mechanism to fit the windscreen.
In answer to John de st Croix letter,
my Alpine runs quite happily on
super unleaded but I also supplement
Alfie’s diet with one of the lead
replacement additives, but then my
engine is far from standard with 10.6:
1 compression ratio, etc, so this may
not be applicable.…
A member by the name of Matthew
Wollman wrote to the letters page
a while back asking to set up an
Oxforshire meeting. I wrote to the email address given, but the message
was returned as undelivered. Just to
say that I am keen to expand on this
idea and to see if such an event would
be viable. If Matthew reads this, or
No.158
anyone else interested in setting up an
Oxfordshire meeting for that mattter,
then please call me on 01865 873997.
Dear John,
I fully support the Webmaster’s
suggestion that the club launches it’s
own Forum. (Horn 157).
Such a communication format for
modern day Alpine owners is long
overdue. It’s instant and most of us
these days would rather dash off a
quick e-mail, a contribution or reply to
a Forum site than sit down and write a
letter or article. In fact does anybody
write letters these days? Microsoft
and Nokia are today’s Basildon Bond
and fountain pen. And yes there is the
danger of nerds, weirdos and other
low life spouting rubbish, but that is
mainly because too many sites have
a category that invites discussion on
‘non-related’ topics.
Almost every Horn these days includes
an embarrassing plea for content. The
world has moved on and despite a
cosy characterful chatty little magazine
that reflects our love of things past,
creating it is beginning to look
increasingly impractical and dare I say
irrelevant. To those who take offence
at this suggestion and want to save
the Horn then make the effort and get
writing and photographing.
For the last few years I have regularly
used and contributed to three Forum
sites, two related to car clubs, & they
have been invaluable as a discussion
and learning medium. The downside is
that one of the car club sites is so good
-12-
June 2005
it has to some extent rendered the
club’s magazine superfluous and rather
old fashioned. Said magazine although
bigger than ours is very glossy with lots
of pretty pictures and advertisements,
primarily contains endless boring lists
of regional groups, where they meet
and the drives they do.
Anybody wanting instant help, advice
or wishes to promote an activity on
their area, or even start a local group,
don’t bother to wait for a magazine, but
log onto the club’s Forum.
Dragging the club into the 21st century
does not diminish a love and respect for
all that was made in the last century.

Dear John,
...Are the valves set the same as the

Bill Davis Jr.

Question:
May I ask as a new member to the
club, still considering which car to
purchase, is it possible to fit an earlier
shape hard top to a 1964 GT?
I’m considering buying a GT that
currently has no hardtop. Would it be a
straightforward fit please and if so are
reproduction hard tops still available
for the earlier type tops?
Many thanks
Bill Cody
( joined at Bristol classic car show this
year).
June 2005
Answer:
I believe Series III, IV and V hard tops
will fit a IV. The windscreen and frame
are the same for all three, but Series I
and II screens and frames are different.
No one is producing replica hard tops
as far as I am aware, but they seem
to be readily available second hand,
an ad in the Horn or a chat to one of
the folks who import from USA should
produce a result. Most people seem
to ignore the hard top, preferring to
convert a GT to soft top by buying the
frame and bins. My Series IV has done
35000 miles in the last 6 years, but the
hard top has probably only done 500
of those miles, despite my completely
refurbishing it.
Hope this helps.

Secretary SAOC
Dear John,
I thought it was high time for me to
finally admit to an affair I have been
conducting over the last 5 years. It all
started when my wife was on holiday
with my children and I was left at home
on my own. What is a man to do when
his wife goes off on safari in Kenya
and leaves him at home to decorate
and DIY?
All was well for the first week but then
my eyes began to wander. The girl I
set my heart on was a beautiful lady, a
product of the swinging 60’s with eyes
to die for and body that just oozed
appeal. Although some 36 years old
at the time she was in good shape
-13-
No.158
with the curves in the right places and
not too many laughter lines. It wasn’t
a long courtship and after the first
2 hours I knew she would be mine,
we spent time looking at each other
(I was rather bold because I started
touching her up almost as soon as I
saw her). She really was part of the
swinging 60’s because she was happy
for me to tickle her accelerator and
we went through all the gears and into
overdrive, all this and more on our first
date, I knew I was on to a good thing.
I shall call her Sally. I was smitten, a
case of love at first sight, she was on
her own feeling neglected and here I
was looking for fun, a match made in
heaven. After that first afternoon I just
knew I had to have her.
As the day of my wife’s return
approached my nerves were shot to
pieces as I hadn’t done anything like
this before, how do I conceal her, what
do I tell my wife when I disappear for
hours on end? Could I lead a double
life? All this doubt but I just knew it
was right.
All was well and I managed to keep
Sally and my wife apart and in
ignorance of each other for the first 6
months, although burning the candle
at both ends was doing me in. But
then disaster struck: Sally was to be
evicted and needed a new home.
Major dilemma, she turned to me,
what was I to do? So I did what a
gentleman ought to do at a time like
this, (went down the pub) put my hand
in my pocket and found us a little place
to go where we could be on our own.
This satisfactory state of affairs has
No.158
continued now for nearly 5 years but
Sally is desperate to spend her holidays
with me. I have reluctantly agreed and
I intend to take her to my little place in
the Charente Maritime France (Ronce
les Bains) in the summer.
Now this is where I need help. My
wife intends to come as well but she
doesn’t know the other lady in my life
will be there at the same time.
Needless to say I am rather concerned,
my wife is easy. Sun, sand and…
shopping will keep her content. But
Sally, what am I to do to ensure she
has a good time?
Most people are only at Spares Day for a couple of hours. We stock up on
goodies, see old friends and then go home, so why don’t we make it so that the
‘Day’ starts at 12 noon and ends at say 3.30pm.
Essex always have at least one drive out a year and these are well attended, I
am sure that other Regions would find the same. So it seems to me to be logical
that we could encourage the regional meets to arrange drive outs on the date of
Spares Day and the Drive outs would all meet up at the Park at Spares Day in
Coventry. This would make Spares Day much more of an event, lots of Alpines
would be there and it would be better for those of us who don’t like getting up
too early! We could amble there through the morning rather than race to get there
early.
I can’t make this year’s National so I can’t raise this as a proposal at the AGM but
I would be grateful if it could be considered.
With a little effort ‘Spares Day’ could become a smaller version of the National.
Best Wishes,
Tim ‘still tired’ Raymond
I am sure Sally will be more demanding
e.g. what do I do about feeding her
(fuel) should I give her a special diet
(fuel additive), what clothes should
I take for her (spares), what about
health care (European Recovery) and
what if it all goes wrong (insurance)? I
am sure there are 101 things I need to
think about so all assistance gratefully
received.
Jeff Gutteridge
e-mail: [email protected]
Dear Mowf,
I always go to Spares Day and look
forward to the event. It occurs to me
however that with a little effort it could
be much better than it currently is.
Currently ‘Spares Day’ is actually
‘Spares Morning’. People like us who
drive for several hours to get there
have to get up at the crack of dawn to
get there and by 12.30pm people are
already packing up to go home!

Spares Report
SUNBEAM ALPINE OWNERS CLUB
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AT
KUGGAR, RUAN MINOR, CORNWALL
SUNDAY 17th JULY 2005
We were blessed with sunny weather for Spares Day at Coventry and I think we can
say that it was a great success. I had recently purchased some good secondhand
spares from a club member and by the end of the day I had recovered almost
50% of the original outlay cost. One or two upgrades for some of the remaining
items such as rechroming, which I did not have time to do beforehand, and the
total outlay will be adequately covered.
AGENDA
1. Apologies for absence
2. Minutes of the last meeting
3. Matters arising
I am currently working on another batch of spares with reportedly some new
boxed items, Lucas distributors and alternators to mention a few just to whet
your appetite. Negotiation is still at the early stage but if successful I will be taking
some to the National and will add another list in the Horn.
4. Reports from Officials
Chairman
Vice- chairman
Treasurer
Secretary
Membership Secretary
Editor
Regalia Officer
Events Advisor/Press Officer
Registrar/Website Editor
ARCC Representative
Information Officer
Archivist
Spares Officer
Now, long awaited good news for the two members who have been patiently
waiting for boot racks. I placed an order for four units on May 23rd with a
fabricating firm at Horsham. These will be made to the same specification but in
stainless steel and tig welded.
I managed to get a cheap secondhand boot lid at Spares Day and have drilled the
four holes and mounted the pattern rack that Dave Holicombe has kindly loaned
to me. I am still looking for one to keep in the Club as a pattern, so if anybody
comes across one please contact me.
There has been a price increase but the first ones will be offered at cost of
£160.00. They should be £175.00. Would the two members who made enquiries
for boot racks kindly contact me. I know one is Mr. Ken Barber but I have mislaid
the name and phone number of the second one.
5. Election of committee members:
Membership Secretary
Events Advisor
Press Officer
ARCC representatives -4 posts vacant
Information Officer
Competition Secretary
Archivist
They should be ready by the end of June and I hope to have two with me at the
National.
That’s all for now,
Peter Pescud.
6. Committee Resolution: Proposal to increase all subscriptions by £2 per
annum

Sunbeam
Alpine
PreProduction Prototype Series I.
(XRW 302) Seacrest Green.
Chassis Number 9000003. This Alpine
was used as a test car and the sculpture
car. It was No. 3 off the line and is
therefore believed to be the earliest
Sunbeam Alpine in existence. Sadly
for sale - but an excellent opportunity
for someone to own a really unique
car. It has been fully restored by me
and I have loads of receipts. The car
is in super condition, and in its original
colours. It has wire wheels, overdrive
and a hard and soft top. It has a very
interesting history and is featured in
Chris McGovern’s book - Sunbeam,
the Classic Alpine.
This car was also raced by Bernard
Unett. It was featured in Practical
Classics - September: Issue 10, 2000.

It was good to see so many of you at the Spares Day.
At the beginning of the week I was expecting it to be a
wash out but the weather was kind to us. Overall the
regalia sales went well which meant there was space for
my purchases on the return trip.
You will notice below that no price is shown for the
SAOC mug, I am in the process of negotiating with a
new supplier for these and they should be back in stock
before The National.
Please enquire what stock I have prior to sending your
cheque as stock of some items is quite low.
Regalia will be at The National but to avoid disappointment pre-order. I won’t
have space to bring everything.

coming soon
June 2005
Welcome to a new membership year (OK, for the spotters this is the third Horn
of the year).
We presently have nearly 600 members and renewals are still coming through.
Membership levels are down on last year so please can you all encourage people
to join the Club when you are out and about, particularly at shows and then
hopefully we can maintain the previous years membership levels. Area reps, I will
be sending you details of those members in your area that have failed to renew
so you know whom at your meetings are no longer members, ie those discreetly
trying to lift/read your copy of the latest Horn.
To the Members - Thank you to all of you for continuing your membership and
support of our Club.
It has been a while since I have contributed to the Horn. My ‘Alpine time’ has
been reduced due to two main reasons. Firstly work commitments mean that
time is precious and secondly the arrival of my daughter, Emily, back in Oct.
2003. Hopefully she will grow up a Sunbeam admirer.
Apologies to anyone who has had difficulties in contacting me.

Hi everyone, it was great to see you yesterday at the White Hart and also a
welcome to Roger & Sally, Lyn & John and Ken, thanks for coming, it is good
to meet new people. Another tremendous turn out, 9 cars! Plus the weather
was very kind to us yet again. I hope you all got as much out of it as we did. It is
always worth organising something when there is so much support.
I will get the photo’s developed and
send them off as soon as I can. Steve
and Nick, apologies, I have amended
email addresses and hopefully
everything is sorted now.
The 3rd July meet will be at the
Wheatsheaf Hotel (Pemier Travel Lodge)
on the A33 Basingstoke Road (Please
contact us for directions). The Landlady
seemed very keen to see a lot of Alpines
and I think will make us welcome. Menu
looks good too.
Please let us have any ideas for alternative venues for September.
Regards
Tony and Lynda

Stondon Transport Museum
TO: ALL ROOTES GROUP DEALERS
SUBJECT: DISC BRAKES SUNBEAM ALPINE SERIES I & II
Where complaints are received in respect of “squeal” on the disc brakes
fitted to the front wheels of the above model, this can be overcome by
fitting special anti-squeal shims.
The shims, of which four per car are required, can be obtained through
the normal Parts channels against Part Number 1206222.
For several years now I have enjoyed a little Spring fever by entering the Hants &
Berks Motor Club Early Bird Classic Tour. Starting from Woodley on the outskirts
of Reading the route is always a pleasant one and always finishes at an interesting
venue. This year it was the Stondon Transport Museum in Bedfordshire.
A full entry of 50 vehicles departed Woodley flagged off by no lesser person than
the Mayor herself. Entries varied from a 1951 one family owned Ford Pilot to a
very nicely restored ‘Woody’ Morris Minor Estate. Sports cars included several
Stags, a TR3a, Fiat 124 Abarth Rally, the ubiquitous MGB in its several forms and
of course the Alpine.
2. Remove the retaining pins and clips used to secure the brake pads in the calipers.
The 100 mile route headed eastwards and then north to Bedfordshire. We crossed
the River Thames at Cookham near Maidenhead then via Great Missenden in
Buckinghamshire and northwards passing Whipsnade Zoo by late morning. We
arrived at the museum in time for a picnic lunch. Although sunny, it was quite
cold. We get it wrong each year anticipating a relaxing picnic with friends in the
Spring sunshine but invariably end up snatching a sandwich in the car during a
cloudburst.
3. Clean off any road dirt or grit found on the pad backing plate. Insert the shims
supplied between the front of each piston and the rear of each brake pad.
When fitted, the semicircular cut-out on the shim should be facing downwards,
away from the bleed screw, and the tongues should be facing outwards. (See
illustration).
I like the smaller and unpretentious museums such as Stondon. There are over
400 exhibits in varying conditions of repair/disrepair and restoration, all jammedin together in four ‘halls’. Exhibits include a few commercials, such as a 1978
Bedford furniture van, some military vehicles and lots of 50’s and 60’s motorbikes
too. Where did they locate that Russian missile transporter I wonder?
To fit, proceed as follows:
1. Jack up the front of the car and remove the road wheels.
4. Refit the retaining pins and clips. Refit the road wheels and lower the jack.
These shims have been fitted in Production from Chassis Number B.9103936.
Kindly bring the foregoing to the attention of all Service personnel at
your location.

I like so called ‘bread and butter’ cars of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s and to some
extent the presentation of some of them being, well less than perfect, does
nothing to take away the viewing enjoyment. They remind me of how I recall
these vehicles in their heyday when they were probably someone’s pride and
joy not to mention their only mode of transport. What a pleasant contrast to the
often over restored examples seen at the NEC each year. Here there is a veritable
bevy of vin ordinaire at its very best: a Morris Marina, Reliant van, Viva HA (with
missing trim), a very down at heel Daf estate (with worn seat covers), a Nash
Metropolitan and even a 1973 Ford Escort camper van! Rootes offerings include
a 1966 Alpine, and a couple of Rapiers. But be warned, this is definitely not a
place to turn up wearing your designer gear – an anorak is definitely de rigueur.
What topped it for me was a 1966 invalid carriage; I haven’t seen one for years.
So what about a bit of glamour I hear you say. Well, there’s a Mark X Jag with
rather faded paintwork and a couple of old Rolls’s enjoying a comfortable
retirement in the corner of one of the display areas. And for the more upwardly
mobile amongst you a Jensen Interceptor too.

“That’s the colour I want for the wallpaper in the dining room...:
If you are in the general direction of Hitchin and Bedford this museum is definitely
worth a visit. The welcome is warm from the enthusiastic staff, the exhibits are
extensive and quite varied although in general a little indifferent in quality. There
is a café and gift shop too. I would certainly recommend you take an hour or so
out for a viewing. The museum is just off the A600. www.transportmuseum.co.uk
