JAGUAR NEWS April 2012 The e-newsletter about Jaguar People. For you. JAGUAR ANNOUNCES NEW SPORTS CAR: THE F-TYPE A Message From Nigel Clarke Moving with the times The rumour mill has been abuzz in recent times concerning JLR’s plans in the world’s biggest car market – China. At last, the cat is out of the bag, if you’ll excuse the link to our feline brand, with the confirmation of a joint venture with Chery, the sixth largest car maker in China. Although all details of the venture are not yet to hand, it is apparent that a new R&D facility will be established alongside an engine manufacturing plant and of course, vehicle assembly lines. This is exciting news in more ways than one, but for future customers, it is especially relevant as the joint venture represents the first significant move towards global expansion. Historically, JLR has not been in a position to capitalise on economies of scale that have been enjoyed by rivals in the premium sector who have been in a position to share platforms and spread development and parts procurement costs. All that will change as the joint venture gathers steam and that means we can look forward to an expanded product line-up along with the benefits of lower unit production costs. Exciting times certainly lie ahead but for now, we’re fortunate to enjoy a product line-up which continues to be showered with numerous international awards and which is delighting more and more customers across the globe. A sporting celebration of Jaguar, the F-TYPE…and a graffitied XKR Following Jaguar’s announcement at the New York auto show that it will soon be building the F-TYPE, an all-new sports car, a special celebration of the marque’s sporting past and future was held at the exclusive STK restaurant in the New York’s meat packing district. A key attraction for the many celebrities in attendance was the unveiling of an XKR coupe with a unique paint scheme courtesy of renowned local graffiti artist, Mr Kaves. Ian Callum, Jaguar’s Director of Design, who had earlier visited Mr Kave’s studio to add his own finishing touch to the XKR said: “I love it. It’s a fascinating contrast of beauty and drama. There’s a real edginess to it that we can enjoy at Jaguar.” In addition to his painting the XKR, Mr Kaves, a graffiti artist since the age of ten, used his talents to produce a series of works for Jaguar celebrating its sporting bloodline of C-, D- and E-type, each being represented on a canvas displayed on the walls of STK. During the evening, Mr Kaves then finished a fourth canvas based around the F-TYPE name to complete the series. Asked about his work with Jaguar, Mr Kaves said: “I was enlisted to come up with something exciting and spontaneous. I went back to my roots and picked up the spray cans. Seeing the car itself and its great lines, it just inspired me.” N. Speaking at the New York auto show Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director, Jaguar Cars, confirmed: “We showed the C-X16 concept in September 2011, and the reaction to it has been so positive that we’ve accelerated our development of an all-new Jaguar sports car. Adrian Hallmark also added that, “That car will be called the F-TYPE, and it will be unveiled in production form later this year. The core appeal of Jaguar’s cars is their sporting heart, and that heart will beat stronger than ever before in the F-TYPE. Its development is a vivid representation of the confidence and ambition of the Jaguar brand, and the desire amongst our engineers and design team to produce a worldleader in a market segment that we have been absent from for too long. But no longer – the F-TYPE is coming.” Utilising Jaguar’s industry-leading knowledge of all-aluminium construction, the F-TYPE will launch as a convertible, and a strict two-seater with the focus uncompromisingly on delivering driver reward. A range of petrol engines will be available – including a new powerplant family – and all will deliver stunning sports car performance. The announcement also marked the point that the F-TYPE’s rigorous development schedule moved to final on-road testing, with engineering prototypes now leaving Jaguar’s Castle Bromwich plant – the same plant at which the production cars will be built. Ian Hoban, Jaguar’s Vehicle Line Director said: “The engineering development of the F-TYPE has focused on delivering a heightened level of dynamic driving reward. We are excited about our progress to date and are looking forward to soon being able to demonstrate what we have achieved.” Ian Callum, Director of Design, said: “A true sports car needs to be pure in both its purpose and its form; to have the opportunity to produce such a car for Jaguar has been a privilege both for myself and for my team. The C-type, D-type and E-type Jaguars were all sports cars that held true to this principle in their era, and the F-TYPE will hold true to that same principle in its time, a time that is soon to arrive.” The F-TYPE will join Jaguar’s existing range of cars – the XF saloon and Sportbrake, XJ saloon and XK coupe/convertible. Full F-TYPE technical and range details will be announced later in 2012. It will go on sale in mid-2013. JAGUAR NEWS [03] JAGUAR HERITAGE RACING ROARS INTO LIFE! The first event at which Jaguar Heritage Racing will be present is the 2012 Mille Miglia retrospective in May. This year’s running of the Mille Miglia has particular significance for Jaguar as it marks 60 years since Sir Stirling Moss and Norman Dewis (then Jaguar’s chief development driver) took the start in the first disc-brake equipped C-type. Later that same year Sir Stirling Moss recorded the first win for a disc-braked car when he drove another C-type to victory at Rheims, paving the way for the wide-scale use of the technology that we all take for granted today. In August, the Jaguar Heritage Racing team will then be in competitive action at the AVD Nürburgring Oldtimer Grand Prix. Often referred to as the ‘green hell’, the Nürburgring Nordschleife is regarded as one of the toughest tracks in the world, which is why Jaguar has a dedicated test facility located there running a rigorous durability and performance programme for its modern range. Jaguar Land Rover Global Head of Communications, Frank Klaas commented: “The Nürburgring Nordschleife presents a unique automotive challenge that Jaguar’s development team continually subject our current and future models to in order to perfect their attributes of quality, durability and dynamic precision. To also see historic works Jaguars in competitive action at the Nürburgring this year will be fascinating.” From Germany, the team will then head back to British shores for the Goodwood Revival in September. The undisputed jewel in the crown of the historic motor racing calendar, the Revival provides a dazzling backdrop of nostalgia for an equally dazzling array of competitive action in which the Jaguar Heritage Racing C- and D-type will play their part. Mid-March marked the launch of the Jaguar Heritage Racing, a programme which will see Jaguar return to the competitive arena through the vibrant world of historic motorsport. For the first time since 1956, works-supported C- and D-types will race again at venues including Goodwood and the Nürburgring, while the season-long programme will also see Jaguar Heritage Racing support numerous additional events on the historic motoring calendar. These include the Mille Miglia, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and each round of the E-type challenge in the UK – a series which in 2011 demonstrated the depth of global interest in historic motorsport, and in Jaguar’s participation specifically. As Jaguar embarks on the most extensive new product development cycle in its history, it is the perfect time to invest in and celebrate its heritage. Said Jaguar Global Brand Director, Adrian Hallmark: “Jaguar is proud of its heritage, and it is a heritage that is both alive and ever evolving. “Advanced engineering is part of our heritage – 2012 sees the 60th anniversary of Jaguar’s development of the disc brake for automotive use, and ten years since the marque introduced aerospace-inspired aluminium monocoque technology to its modern range, technology today used on both the XJ and XK. Forward looking design is part of our heritage – the poised intent of the C-X16 concept pushes the boundaries today just as much as the SS Jaguar 100 did in 1935. And racing is very much part of our heritage also – which is why we have launched the Jaguar Heritage Racing programme that this year will see Jaguar C- and D-types in competitive action.” The Jaguar Heritage Racing programme is operated and managed by JD Classics, based in Maldon, Essex. An established player in the historic motorsport world, JD Classics will prepare both the C- and D-type Jaguars which will take to the track, and have responsibility for all race-day activities. Derek Hood, Managing Director, JD Classics, said: “Jaguars have been at the heart of our business for many years, and the opportunity to work with Jaguar Heritage Racing and ensure that the company is as well represented in historic motorsport today as it was when those same models competed in period is one we were only too happy to accept.” The Jaguar Heritage Racing programme will supplement the activities of Jaguar Heritage – a charitable trust and custodians of an extensive collection of priceless models from Jaguar’s past, including the unique XJ13 prototype. Its cars are not campaigned competitively on-track, but will continue to be exhibited – and demonstrated – at a huge number of events during 2012. JAGUAR NEWS [04] JAGUAR LAND ROVER ACHIEVES PLATINUM CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY RATING Jaguar Land Rover has been recognised by Business in the Community in the UK for its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, achieving the Platinum rating in the Corporate Responsibility (CR) Index. The prestigious Platinum accolade reflects JLR’s continuing commitment to CR throughout its business operations. JLR is the only UK based global automotive company to achieve the Platinum level. This is the fourth consecutive year the company has achieved an improved rating since first participating in the CR Index in 2009, which resulted in a Bronze rating. Commenting on the award Mike Wright, Executive Director, JLR said: “Corporate Social Responsibility is a core value for JLR and covers every aspect of our business from the environmental impact of our products and operations to engagement with our employees, community groups and nationwide education programmes. It is therefore very pleasing to see the efforts of our entire team recognised by Business in the Community.” The CR Index is the UK’s leading voluntary benchmark of Corporate Responsibility. It is a framework to help companies to integrate and improve CR throughout their operations by providing a systematic approach to managing, measuring and reporting on business impact in society and on the environment. The Platinum award complements JLR’s existing community and environmental achievements. JLR became the first car manufacturer in the UK to achieve the highly regarded CommunityMark, the UK’s national standard that publicly recognises excellence in community investment. Awarded by Business in the Community, the CommunityMark is widely recognised as the national standard of excellence for community investment and was given in recognition of JLR’s considerable investment in community programmes, including its Education Business Partnership Centres and national educational initiatives. Stephen Howard, Chief Executive, Business in the Community said: “I congratulate JLR on achieving Platinum in the 2012 BITC Corporate Responsibility Index. The CR Index has helped to highlight clearly those best practice examples that bring to life in a powerful way what integrated responsible practice really looks like. As we celebrate 10 years of our CR Index it has given me great pleasure to witness each company’s responsible business journey and the transformations they are making both within their businesses and the impact they have in our communities.” JLR’s Environmental Innovation programme was awarded a Big Tick for Environmental Leadership in 2011. The award recognised JLR’s commitment to sustainable products and manufacturing processes, CO2 reductions and improved fuel efficiency through its comprehensive employee engagement initiative. Mr. Yin Tongyao JAGUAR NEWS [06] JAGUAR TAKES ON THE GOODWOOD HILL AS 2012 FESTIVAL OF SPEED IS LAUNCHED This issue of Jaguar News has taken on a decidedly racy look with news of Jaguar’s involvement at the famous Goodwood Festival of Speed. An XFR recently took to “The Hill” to mark the launch of the 2012 Festival. The demonstration runs provided a suitably dramatic start to the preview event for the 2012 running of the Festival of Speed – set to take place between June 28 and July 1. The theme for the 2012 Festival is ‘Young Guns – Born to Win’ celebrating young drivers, riders, designers and engineers in every aspect of the automotive world. This theme is echoed by the recent steps taken by Jaguar Land Rover to recruit hundreds of new graduates in every part of the business, encouraging them to contribute to, and play a key part in, JLR’s ambitious plans for the future. JAGUAR WINS ‘MOST SPIRITED GETAWAY’ AWARD FOR SECOND TIME AT GOODWOOD A Jaguar has won the ‘Most Spirited Getaway’ Award for the second consecutive year at the launch of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The honour, won last year by Touring Car driver Anthony Reid in an XFR, was won at the 2012 event by Alex Buncombe at the wheel of an XJS TWR owned by JD Classics. The light-hearted Award is given to the driver judged to have made the most enthusiastic, crowd-pleasing departure up the notorious Goodwood Hill. The car, a 1984 Jaguar XJS TWR and chassis 005 of just seven produced was previously driven by Win Percy. It made a suitably dramatic start as the combination of slick tyres and a 485bhp, race-specification V12 and side-exit exhaust system ensured a visual and aural spectacle. It was joined on the Goodwood Hill by the iconic Silk Cut Jaguar XJR-8/9 run by Don and Justin Law – the latter aiming to once again set the pace at the 2012 running of the event having completed the run in just over 44 seconds in previous years. In 2011, the Festival celebrated 50 years of the E-type in spectacular style with a 28-metre sculpture of the iconic sports car forming the centrepiece of the event that saw significant Jaguars including the XJ13, C-, D- and, of course, E-type being driven in anger in front of crowds numbering in excess of 175,000 people. Once again, Jaguar is proud to play a role in the Festival of Speed with vehicles from the past and a little way into the future promising to take part in the notorious run up to Goodwood Hill. JAGUAR NEWS [07] JAGUAR PROMOTES ENGINEERING CAREERS JLR Executive Director Mike Wright said: “The success of our global business – and the UK economy –lies in engineering and innovation. JLR has ambitious plans for growth and this can only be supported by innovation in new products, engines and environmental technologies. We are the UK’s leading investor in automotive research and development and we are successfully delivering breakthroughs in engineers, performance and sustainability. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has called for more young people to consider careers in engineering and technology, as a new survey revealed that engineering remains a minority interest among UK teenagers. Having engaged with thousands of young people at ‘The Big Bang’ science and engineering fair at the NEC in Birmingham in March, JLR published results of a new survey of one thousand 13-16 year olds which revealed that less than 20% had considered a career in engineering. “However, it’s critical that we attract talented young people to become the next generation of engineers and technologists. We have a wide range of educational initiatives underway with the aim of getting young people excited about engineering and crucially, to encourage them to make the right subject choices at GCSE-level and beyond.” JLR has a well-established programme of educational initiatives to promote STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) within schools and colleges to help create the next generation of engineers and technologists. In 2011, JLR reached out to more than 233,000 children. Mike Wright This year, JLR was a lead sponsor of The Big Bang – the UK’s largest celebration of science and technology for young people. The company’s stand was packed full of stimulating exhibits aimed at highlighting the excitement of engineering. This included a fully immersive future technology simulator, a demonstration on how driver/car conxnectivity in the future will make the driving experience simpler and safer, a virtual car airflow analysis and Jaguar C-X75 concept car virtual race which demonstrated vehicle dynamics. The stunning Jaguar C-X75 and Land Rover DC100 concept vehicles were also showcased on the stand. A group of 110 Jaguar Land Rover graduates lead school groups around the event whilst engineers and apprentices were on-hand on the stand to talk about the exhibits and their career experiences. JLR Engineering Director, Bob Joyce said: “As our survey reveals, the UK needs to do more to make science and technology the number one career choice for our young people. We now employ more than 6,000 engineers, designers and technologists in the UK, and the search is on for more talented young people to join that team. It’s a really exciting time to be an engineer, and it’s vital for the UK that today’s school students consider engineering as a desirable career to follow.” The Big Bang Science and Engineering Fair 2012 JAGUAR NEWS [08]
